Today, science has uncovered many wonders about the cosmos and about life within it, but science has also "reduced" most everything in the universe to virtually nothing. In our attempt to understand the universe and ourselves down to a quantified, subatomic constituency we have not only emptied the universe, but also virtually emptied ourselves. C.S. Lewis well understood that scientific quantification of the physical universe and scientific empiricism in general, cannot be the foundational paradigm for how we understand the cosmos and our place within it. Lewis was not criticizing science per se, however. Rather, he was highly critical of the belief that the scientific quantification of reality was the only way to understand reality. In such a universe, the essential facets of what make us human, morality, virtue, truth, beauty, and goodness all become mere emotive sentiments. I expected to see a katana plunged into the heart of crypto. Instead I got a piece of wall art, where the two ideas were placed in near proximity, but without any contact. The Bushido of Bitcoin By: Aleksandar Svetski Published: 2024 529 Pages Briefly, what is this book about? Bitcoin will be the thing that saves the world from the fiat money created, debt fueled dystopia we're already descending into. As part of this salvation it will require people to adopt ancient (though also somewhat apocryphal) warrior virtues. Specifically: righteousness, courage, compassion, honor, honesty, responsibility, excellence, respect, duty, and restraint.  What's the author's angle? As you may have already gathered, Svetski is a Bitcoin hyper-maximalist. Bitcoin isn't just our financial salvation, it's our spiritual salvation as well.  Who should read this book? As a “return to virtue” tome it was pretty good, though long-winded, and a retread of books I'd already read. (Like Ryan Holiday's stoic stuff, if you're familiar with that.) On top of that it adds quite a bit of culture war stuff, which annoyed many of the reviewers on Goodreads and Amazon. It feels like a book without a natural audience. It's strident enough that you would already have to be convinced to enjoy it, but if you're already convinced then you probably know everything Svetski is going to say. What does the book have to say about the future? The book lays out two paths, we can double-down on the fiat-future which, at best, leads to dependence, and at worst disaster. Or we can adopt the more muscular, responsible, and sovereign path of Bitcoin. As usual with such books it skips over the messy middle.  Specific thoughts: We need a new civic religion, but I'm not sure this is it

This week we talk about Chivalry of a Failed Knight and talked about the vibe of the anime and not so much the plot. One of the main points that we touch on is that the main couple actually communicates. We also talk about the main character Ikki and how he makes his own style because no one would train him, and he has a skill that is basically a burst mode that hits hard and then floors him right after. We even argued about chivalry and finally landed on yes, Ikki also sets boundaries and is willing to help people with no strings attached. One thing though is that the pacing bugged us with what seemed like jumps between episodes or ground work laid out but it also felt like there were whole sections just left out. All in all it was an entertaining show and is worth the watch. Set in a modern world where a small number of humans possess the ability to manipulate their souls into powerful weapons, these individuals are known as "Blazers." and the main story follows Ikki, the so-called “Worst One” at Hagun Academy due to his low magic. His life gets upended when he encounters Stella Vermillion, an A-Ranked Blazer and a princess, in a compromising situation in their shared dorm room. After some shenanigans the two push each other to grow while training for the Seven Stars Sword Art Festival, a national tournament that crowns the strongest student knight. The show blends tournament arcs, romance, light comedy, school politics, clean fights and a straight-shooting main couple that actually communicates most of the time. As God-fearing men in the great country of America, we have allowed ourselves and our standards of how we should be operating to slip subpar. It is our responsibility to take the initiative needed to protect our family and teach them right from wrong, ESPECIALLY when society has a biased stance on particular subjects. We have to be the ones to no longer remain passive just because it's what all the other good little consumers and neighbors are doing. At what point is your family's safety more important than keeping up with the Joneses? At the point in which YOU say you will NOT allow it to happen with your house! At what point does your discomfort become so unbearable that you finally demand the respect you should have been receiving all along? Have you also been giving that same level of respect?We have to be the ones to teach our children the lessons we want them to learn and carry throughout their lives and pass on to people they encounter and eventually their families they build. We must set the examples of what character pillars of excellence means through our own actions as a role model for our children. As the head of our house, we as men are in control of how we need to guide our family through life and navigate situations with integrity that build quality experiences for our youth to rely on. If all they are ever taught is to do what everyone else is doing because we're too afraid to confront an issue directly or do the right thing even when nobody is watching, we will remain a country in fear and disrespect will only continue to grow. The actions we choose to take take today as parents to our young children will forever shape their character and form them into the human beings they will inevitably becoming in just 1 or 2 short decades at most. So many kids in sports need to be taught there is so much more to winning the game than having the best score: discipline, character, responsibility, teamwork. The lessons learned while playing the sport are far greater achievements than winning a game by whatever means necessary. There should be a sense of pride in what we represent and are capable of when we do the hard and difficult things. We have to take care of what is happening within our home before we worry about anything else happening outside of it. Be present and spend time with the people we love. Teach them to be good human beings by stepping up and reviving the traditions like integrity, honor, respect, and chivalry in everyday actions and situations.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss John Barbour's epic poem The Brus, or Bruce, which he wrote c1375. The Brus is the earliest surviving poem in Older Scots and the only source of many of the stories of King Robert I of Scotland (1274-1329), popularly known as Robert the Bruce, and his victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314. In almost 14,000 lines of rhyming couplets, Barbour distilled the aspects of the Bruce's history most relevant for his own time under Robert II (1316-1390), the Bruce's grandson and the first of the Stewart kings, when the mood was for a new war against England after decades of military disasters.
