Father's Day Sermon from church planting resident, Matt Koehler, on James 1:21-25.Living out your faith requires more than hearing God's Word. It demands an honest look in the mirror and a willingness to act on what you see. Four key actions shape faithful living: admitting what is true, submitting to God's authority, committing wholeheartedly to Jesus, and transmitting that truth to others. Your identity in Christ is not based on your performance but on the finished work of Jesus on the cross. That identity should shape how you lead your home, raise your children, serve your church, and conduct yourself at work. Satan actively attacks your sense of who you are in Christ, but the shield of faith stands against every one of those lies. The question is not whether you have heard the truth. The question is what you will do with it today.

God's hand is woven throughout Scripture as a picture of His power, deliverance, guidance, and even righteous discipline. In John 10, Jesus makes a stunning promise that no one can snatch His people out of His hand, grounding our security entirely in His grip rather than our own. The early church in Antioch experienced this firsthand, as ordinary, unnamed believers proclaimed Jesus into a pagan city and saw a great number turn to the Lord. Barnabas arrived and called them to remain faithful with a resolute heart, holding fast to the One who was already holding fast to them. The church God blesses is one where every member ministers, grace is chosen over criticism, the Word is faithfully taught, and generosity flows freely. God's hand is not distant or passive. He is actively holding you, and the invitation is to hold fast to Him in return.

The disciples after Jesus' ascension demonstrate three essential elements: being in the right place through obedience to God's commands, surrounding ourselves with the right people who show resilience and stick-with-it-ness, and maintaining the right posture of prayerful dependence on God. Just as a coal removed from fire grows cold, believers separated from community lose their spiritual warmth. The enemy's strategy is isolation, but God calls us to wait together in fellowship. True waiting means actively obeying God's commands while maintaining radical dependence on Him through consistent prayer and community with other believers.

In Acts 1:4-11, Jesus commanded His disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit's power before beginning their mission. This wasn't optional—it was essential. The Holy Spirit provides dunamis power, the same explosive force from which we get the word dynamite. This supernatural power has one primary purpose: to make us witnesses for Jesus Christ. As believers, we don't just have the Spirit with us, but within us, empowering us for victory over sin, healing relationships, and accomplishing God's purposes when we surrender our own strength.

The Book of Acts serves as more than historical documentation—it represents a continuing story in which modern believers actively participate. We are living in Acts 29, where Jesus continues the work He began during His earthly ministry through His body, the church.Going deeper in our walk with Jesus requires intentional commitment rather than perfectionist performance. Three transformative practices can guide this journey: consistent church attendance with family, monthly Scripture memorization beginning with Acts 1:8, and daily Bible reading through the New Testament. These disciplines embed God's Word in our hearts and minds while strengthening our relationship with Christ.The Book of Acts reveals four foundational truths that remain relevant today. First, Jesus began something that continues through His people—His work didn't end at the ascension but continues through believers. Second, we have received clear commands, particularly the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations. Third, Jesus is alive and active today, not just a historical figure but a present reality who strengthens and guides us. Finally, God's kingdom exists now wherever Jesus reigns as Lord. Our response to these truths should be worship, surrender, and obedience to the King of Kings, recognizing that ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things when they make themselves available for God's use.
