His bebop was underground music: subversive, intellectual, and a major departure from popular music of the day (think: Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters, Perry Como). He was an intellectual heavyweight, nearly untouchable in his technical ability and pushing music to places no one else was daring to go. Today, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on Toronto saxophonist Patrick Smith.Patrick has become a key player in the city's creative music scene. His new album, Words Underlined, came out in December on Lit Soc Records. It's the first release from the new label started by Sellers & Newell, a Toronto bookstore that moonlights as a music venue. Patrick recorded there with guitarist Dan Pitt and drummer Lowell Whitty. The trio plays without a bass, and the album alternates between composed pieces and full improvisations.A few episodes back, we featured a talk with Noah Franche-Nolan, who also collaborated with Dan Pitt. "Mothership Connection" von Parliament gilt als eines der bedeutendsten Funkalben aller Zeiten. Für das Musikerkollektiv Parliament Funkadelic, die hinter dem Konzeptalbum stecken, war es darüber hinaus das erste Album, das eine Platinauszeichnung bekommen hat. Bei "Chocolate City" war das zum Beispiel das Weiße Haus in Washington D.C. und bei "Mothership Connection" ist das eben der Weltraum. Auch nach "Mothership Connection" beschäftigen sich Parliament bei ihren nächsten beiden Alben mit der Weltraumthematik. Für Musikredakteur Stephan Fahrig ist dieses Album so großartig, weil es "ein Schmelztigel von so vielem ist, was darin vorkommt". Vor allem schaffen Parliament es aber auf diesem Album einen "ganz neuen rohen Funk" zu entwickeln, erklärt Stephan Fahrig, der im Kontrast zu der sehr glatten Musik zu der Zeit steht, wie sie zum Beispiel die Commodores rund um Lionel Ritchie machten. Darüber hinaus vermischen Parliament auf diesem Album viele Musikgenres wie zum Beispiel den kultigen James-Brown-Funk, Bebop, Gospel und auch Rhythm and Blues. Und so wie sie den Mix aus den Genres präsentieren, sind sie für Stephan Fahrig "eine Vorgänger-Version des Hip Hop". Today we present two piano instrumentals that explore the mysteries of Mist. Strictly speaking, a “mist” can be defined by some water vapor that obscures your vision, but how many more evocative instances can you think of where a mist appears in a story or film, usually preceding an arrival of some spiritual manifestation? There was a video game called “Myst” (spelled with a Y) which featured a series of puzzles saturated with a heady whiff of the arcane. Your sight is always obscured; your emotional restlessness is never assuaged. Erroll Garner and Bix Beiderbecke were two jazz titans writing compositions separated by 30 years that hint at this other-worldly quality inherent in the idea of the Mist. Their music excites the senses and tugs at the heart simultaneously; it's music that lifts off and keeps insinuating an urge to maintain altitude in an unresolved quest for landing, but never deciding on a perch.ERROLL GARNERMost of you probably know Johnny Mathis's version of Misty, with lyrics by Johnny Burke, that was a monster hit of 1959, but Erroll Garner wrote the song as an instrumental 5 years earlier, on a plane flight to Chicago's OHare airport, after seeing a rainbow through the airplane window. That's a fitting image for the complicated feelings invoked here: a glimpse of hope through tears. Influenced by Earl Hines, Garner played with spontaneous timing changes, liquidy octaval melodies, and improvised chordal voicings, and his contribution to jazz evolution was to reconcile the gap between BeBop spontaneity and Orchestral formalism. His style was so free that he was dubbed “the happy man” because this joy he exuded was so palpable. Misty was concocted from the eternal music of the spheres - maybe because his feet were not on the ground when he composed it.BIX BEIDERBECKEThe comet of Bix Beiderbecke's talent was a mystery in itself: dead from alcohol in 1931 at the age of 28, his cornet style and compositional originality continues to fascinate almost 100 years later. A self taught musician, Bix appeared from podunk Iowa and immediately became a ragtime sensation at the height of the Jazz era with The Wolverines, then with Paul Whiteman's orchestra (along with Bing Crosby). He was a white man playing a traditionally black form of music, which was a novelty, and that made him easier to market to middle America - but such genius is color blind.Although renowned for his horn playing, he composed In a Mist on piano in 1927 (he was 24), and it's here that you see the influence of the impressionist composer Claude Debussy, the creator of such sensuous works as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and La Mer. Is this Jazz? How did he do it? Clearly, Bix was in touch with mystical forces beyond human understanding, or maybe, like Robert Johnson, he just made a deal with the devil. Either way, the spiritual quest suggested by these chord changes transports us into a misty continent of emotional confusion.

EPISODE 339 - We take a look at the show that brought huge fame for the Turtle -- the original Saturday morning TV show. Although primarily made as a way to promote the new toy line, the creators of this TV show also wanted it to be good. So there was a lot of thought put into this show. They took a lot of visual designs from the comic, but simplified the story considerable. They added new characters (Rocksteady and BeBop), half-new characters (Krang the talking brain) and gave April a more specific consistent personality. We look at the first five episodes, which is the entire first season and which tell a single story. The story gets complicated, but it's fun and thoughtful and... pretty darn good. Hey, maybe these Turtles are gonna be around for a while. In Loose Screws, we talk about the new season of Stranger Things. Újabb évadához érkezett a jazzélet megkerülhetetlen alakjait felvonultató beszélgetéssorozatunk. Négyévesen minden zajérzékeny szomszéd rémálmával, a hegedűvel kezdte – a klasszikus, sőt: a népi „alapozás” tehát igen hamar megvolt. Jónéhány év komolyzenei szárnybontogatás után azonban egy határozott fordulattal a jazzéneklés felé vette az irányt, majd zeneszerzést is tanult. Igazán nem mondhatjuk, hogy ne járta volna körül többnézőpontból is a zenét, amely időközben a hivatásává vált. Pianist / composer Thelonius Sphere Monk (born October 10, 1917), often referred to as the 'High Priest of Bebop', was one of the founders of the musical movement, alongside Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie at Minton's Playhouse in Harlem. His idiosyncratic piano style and compositions are so distinctive as to be immediately identifiable as completely his own. His total originality is undeniable, there is only one Monk!

Listen to an hour of music celebrating the legacy of The Bebop Society of Indianapolis. Hear rare recordings from Avenue musicians, including Wes Montgomery, Carl Perkins, David Baker, Pookie Johnson and more. In the early 1940s, a new style of jazz music known as bebop began to emerge. Bebop marked a revolutionary shift in jazz, breaking away from the swing dance music of the 1930s. Bebop was born in after-hours jam sessions at venues like Minton's Playhouse in Harlem. Bebop developed as musicians sought greater artistic freedom and technical challenge. Artists like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk pushed the boundaries of harmony, rhythm and improvisation. They created a style that featured fast tempos with complex melodies and chord progressions. Bebop transformed jazz into a modernist art form that focused on creativity, over commercial appeal. Here in Naptown, the Avenue was the place to hear bebop music. In 1946, Dizzy Gillespie performed at the Avenue's Sunset Terrace nightclub, and in January of 1948 Charlie Parker played there too. 1948 was also the year that a collective of Naptown musicians and music fans, formed The Bebop Society of Indianapolis. At that time, bebop music had not yet gained, widespread acceptance among music fans. The Bebop Society held concerts and lectures to educate the public on the music's importance Their events were not held in nightclubs, the society hosted gatherings in community centers, including, The Senate Avenue YMCA, The Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, The Flanner House, and the Crispus Attucks High School auditorium. Guest speakers at the Bebop Soierty's events, included Crispus Attucks' music teacher Norman Merrifield and Jack Tracey, an editor for Down Beat magazine. The Bebop Society also fought against racial segregation at music events. In 1948, members of the Bebop Society desegregated a Stan Kenton concert, at Riverside Park. As headline, in the Indianapolis Recorder stated, “Youth Group Breaks Jim Crow and Attends Concert at Riverside”. The Society also provided scholarships for talented young musicians, including the future Avenue jazz star David Baker. But The Bebop Society's main focus was music, and their concerts featured the greatest jazz musicians in Naptown, including Pookie Johnson, Wes Montgomery, Carl Perkins, Buddy Montgomery, Monk Montgomery, Joe Mitchell, Maceo Hampton, Les “Bear” Taylor, Benny Barth, and Willis Kirk, who served as president of the Society in 1950.

He played with most of the greats in jazz music beginning in the Bebop era of the 1940s, including Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Charlie “Bird” Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Miles Davis is jazz's first and only rock star, with the rap sheet to prove it. He did enough cocaine to run down the entirety of 52nd street, and pimped out women when performing wasn't paying the bills. At one point, his heroin habit was so public that clubs who had once welcomed his brilliant bebop instead froze him out completely. When he wasn't vying to keep his rightful spot in jazz's upper echelon, he was doing time at Rikers Island or dodging racist cops on the prowl for any junkie they could find.
