What happens when an ordinary person becomes the first responder during a life-threatening emergency? In this episode of the ACT ASAP Podcast, Daniel Kilburn sits down with father-daughter team Brad Newbury and Kiera Newbury to discuss CPR preparedness, emergency response, the bystander effect, and the extraordinary ripple effects that can occur when a life is saved.Drawing upon decades of experience in fire service, EMS, emergency medicine, and education, Brad and Kiera share the inspiration behind their upcoming book, The Saved Effect: How Ordinary People Create Extraordinary Outcomes.During this conversation, we discuss:• Why most cardiac arrests occur at home• The importance of CPR preparedness for families• Situational awareness during emergencies• The psychology of the bystander effect• Why confidence comes from training and practice• How ordinary people can make extraordinary differences when seconds matterOne of the most powerful lessons from this discussion is that preparedness is not reserved for first responders. The person who saves a life is often a spouse, parent, friend, neighbor, or bystander who chose to prepare before the emergency occurred. If you have ever wondered whether you could make a difference during a crisis, this episode is for you.Preparedness Is Leadership.Additional Resources

Power Up: **Acts 8:4–10 (KJV)**Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. And there was great joy in that city. But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.In this episode of Seeing Without Seeing, we come together in prayer and faith to seek the Lord concerning the pressing issues affecting our world today. A birthday cookout turned into one of the most powerful conversations I've had in a long time, and I had to bring it to you. I sat down with a new friend named Julissa, who founded LearningMind Diagnostics, and everything about her reminded me what it looks like when someone is truly on fire for their work. In this episode, I break down three raw lessons I pulled from that conversation that can immediately shift how you show up in your life, your work, and your community. Key Takeaways Genuine passion cannot be taught, coached, or replicated by AI. If you love what you do, you cannot be replaced. Authenticity always wins. You do not need the perfect words, you need the real ones that come from caring deeply. The power of one is real. Driving hours to help one child is not inefficient, it is exactly how you start a chain reaction of change. Stop trying to reach the masses. Focus on the one person in front of you, give them everything, and repeat that process daily. Your name is attached to your character, your integrity, and your legacy. Make people say it right and make sure it stands for something. Action Steps Ask yourself honestly: am I passionate about what I do, does it have purpose, and does it make someone's life better? If the answer is no, figure out what needs to change. Identify one person today, just one, that you can invest your full attention and effort into. Send the text, offer the help, make the call. Start the chain reaction. Take ownership of your name and your identity. Correct people when they get it wrong, because your name carries everything you have built and everything you are still building. Notable Quote In the end, authenticity always wins. If you're passionate about it, you'll have an audience because we as people need passion. We need people that love what they do.

This week on the Black. Girl. Iowa. podcast, Emili sits down with community leader, advocate, and changemaker Monique Scarlett for a powerful conversation about Black history, civic engagement, and building bridges in Northwest Iowa. Born and raised in Sioux City, Monique shares what it was like growing up as one of the few Black children in her school during the 1960s and 70s, navigating racism at a young age while learning the importance of resilience, faith, and community. She reflects on the rich but often overlooked history of Black Iowans in Sioux City and the importance of preserving those stories for future generations. The conversation also explores Monique's leadership journey — from serving on the Sioux City School Board to becoming president of the Sioux City NAACP and founding Unity in Community, an organization focused on strengthening relationships between citizens and law enforcement through accountability, education, and dialogue. Throughout the episode, Monique shares wisdom on:The importance of civic engagementBuilding community in spaces where you feel unseenWhy Black women must continue speaking up and taking actionThe role faith plays in leadership and perseveranceCreating accountability instead of simply complaining about systemsWhy preserving Black history in Iowa matters now more than everOne of the most impactful moments of the episode comes when Monique reminds listeners:“A vision without execution is just another hallucination.” This episode is honest, empowering, emotional, and deeply rooted in the belief that change happens when ordinary people decide to show up for their communities.Growing up Black in Sioux CityRacism, resilience, and finding communityBlack history in Northwest IowaLeadership and public serviceUnity in Community and rebuilding trustAccountability and civic actionFaith, perseverance, and purposeA lightning round with Monique ScarlettUnity in Community Sioux City (Facebook)Sioux City NAACPTEDx Talk: “”Be sure to also check out Monique's powerful TEDx Talk, Tap Into the Power of One, where she speaks about leadership, impact, and creating change in your community.Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Pandora, and YouTube.Website: Black. This message centers on the idea that real change begins with one person choosing love in action, using the life of Mother Teresa as a model. It highlights her journey from teacher to servant of the poor and emphasizes six key lessons: serve a higher purpose, choose love through action, begin with those closest to you, do small things with great love, nurture your inner spiritual life, and slow down to bring kindness into everyday moments. Ultimately, the message teaches that transforming the world doesn't require grand gestures—just consistent, compassionate actions, starting at home, where even the smallest act of love can create a ripple effect.1. What if the life you're longing for is on the other side of one simple yes? In this episode of The Journey to Becoming, Crystal shares how one invitation from a friend became the turning point that changed everything. After doing the inner healing work and walking through her past, she knew God had more for her, but she needed the right environment to grow into it. Inside the Joyful Fit Life community, Crystal found exactly that. Through daily accountability check-ins, she developed a new level of discipline that led to an incredible 75-pound weight loss. But even more powerful than the physical transformation was the mental and spiritual breakthrough…she dismantled the lie that she was “behind” in life and began fully stepping into the woman God created her to be. If you're a Christian woman feeling stuck, isolated, or unsure of your next step, this episode will remind you that you don't need to have everything figured out—you just need to take the next step in faith. Crystal's encouragement is simple but powerful: keep going, and do it afraid.

Antioch was a model church because of its model minister, Barnabas. Yesterday we started to investigate this "son of encouragement" who was such a blessing everywhere he went. When he went to Antioch, that church eventually became not just a model church, but a missionary church and a merciful church. Not to take anything away from Paul or other leaders, but as we read "Acts" we start to see Barnabas as the glue holding everything together. Who was the most successful Christian in the New Testament? Paul left a gigantic footprint on the Earth, as did Peter and John; some deacons, including Stephen and Phillip, changed the course of history; but Jim believes that the Christian leader who shines brightest in the book of Acts is... Barnabas. That wasn't what his parents had called him; he earned that nickname. We often see Barnabas in a supporting role, which suited him just fine. We're in Acts, chapter 11. When you want to scale your business, it's easy to default to “more”. More offers, more marketing, more customers… more audiences. But “more” often leads to distraction and ends up slowing growth instead. In this episode, Tara breaks down this common challenge scalable experts face after creating a signature offer: losing focus when it's time to grow. Instead of doubling down on the right audience, many experts start widening their message, experimenting with too many directions, and diluting their efforts.Tara shares why the Power of One matters so much in this phase of business growth: one customer, one problem, one result. She explains how distraction can creep in once you begin scaling, why trying to speak to too many audiences slows traction, and what to do instead if your growth feels scattered. If your offer is solid but momentum feels slower than you expected, this episode is your reminder to refocus, simplify, and return to the fastest path forward. In this episode, Tara covers:What “The Power of One” really meansWhy focus is the hardest part of building a scalable offerHow distraction shows up after you've created tractionThe danger of speaking to too many audiences at onceWhy diluted messaging slows growthHow to refocus on your ideal customer and core transformationChapters00:00 Introduction + the challenge Scalable Experts face00:54 The Power of One: one customer, one problem, one result01:54 Why finding your focus is the hardest part02:36 Phase two: package, test, and scale the experience03:44 What happens when distraction sets in04:41 How growth gets diluted by too many opportunities06:34 A client example: solid offer, slow traction07:21 Why scaling still requires patience and reps08:32 Warm audiences vs. cold audiences09:14 Putting the right hooks into the market11:10 The problem with marketing to six different avatars12:16 How diluted messaging slows growth14:32 The fix: double down on one ideal customer15:37 Strategic focus vs. shiny object distraction16:18 Refocus on the fastest path to transformation16:56 Final encouragement + next stepsIf this episode resonates, share it with another expert who may need to refocus before they scale. Episode Description "Healing happens in moments. And sometimes one moment changes everything." In this episode of Grieve That Shit, Sharon Brubaker, grief specialist and founder of The Grief School, sits down with Emily, founder of Moment Cares — a full-service recovery and mental health support organization helping individuals and families navigate substance use, trauma, and emotional crisis. After losing her nephew Austin, Sharon learned that grief is not just sadness. It lives in the body. It hides in addiction. It shows up as anxiety, avoidance, overworking, numbing, and survival mode. And in this powerful conversation, Sharon and Emily connect the dots between grief, trauma, addiction, and the nervous system. With 18 years of personal sobriety and 15 years of professional experience, Emily shares how her own recovery journey revealed something deeper: alcohol and drugs are often not the root problem — they are the symptom. Underneath is unprocessed pain. Unfelt grief. A nervous system stuck in fear. Together, they explore the head–heart connection, why so many people live disconnected from their bodies, and how learning to sit with emotion — even for one minute — can begin to change everything. This episode is not just about addiction. It is about grief, trauma, community, and connection. Because healing does not happen in isolation. It happens when someone says, "Me too." What You'll Learn in This Episode How addiction and numbing behaviors are often responses to unprocessed grief Why sitting with emotion feels terrifying — and why it actually sets you free The difference between intellectualizing pain and feeling it in the body How trauma disconnects us from our own nervous system Why community is one of the most powerful tools in recovery How mental health, grief, and substance use are deeply connected Questions to Sit With After Listening You do not need to answer these all at once. What have I been using to avoid feeling? Is my struggle really about the surface behavior — or something deeper? Where did I learn that my emotions were not safe? Who is safe enough for me to begin telling the truth? Homework for You The next time you feel overwhelmed, pause. Ask yourself: "What am I feeling in my body right now?" Not what you're thinking. Not the story. Just the feeling. Sit with it for one minute. Watch what happens. That minute might be your moment. Resources + Next Steps Learn more about Emily and Moment Cares at momentcares.com
