"Long lay the world in sin and ever pining, ‘Til He appears and the soul felt its worthA thrill of hope; the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn."So goes the second verse of "O Holy Night," where it is hope that thrills us. Hope. Hope is a distinctly Christian word. But hope in modern nomenclature usually suggests that desired outcome has a possibility of failure: "I hope I get to my gate on-time ... I hope I get to see that movie ... I hope that pretty girl says yes to coffee ..." No, Biblical hope is different. It is based on a promise of God that is coming, but not yet. In this first message of Advent, hope is first seen as something that God promised long ago, and is beginning to emerge. There were at least two people who had thought of it all their lives - and soon they would see it with their own eyes. And if we're careful, we'll have the same experience!Listen-in on Sean's conversation with Barry, then catching up with Nate! ▶️ Nate's Message on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/ytp4e3df
“There are only three kinds of Christians when it comes to world missions: zealous goers, zealous senders, and disobedient.” That sentence was written by John Piper, a pastor in Minnesota. What do you think, when you read that? Is it negative, positive, sobering, judgemental? Regardless, Piper would say that he means for it to be provocative. To provocate literally means "to call forth" or "to call out." In the Great Commission, Jesus didn't mean to simply inspire, or reflect - he meant to call out his disciples to bear witness to the truth and disciple others to do the same. In this wonderful conversation with Jerry Acosta, Grace Community Church's own pastor of missions and evangelism, Jerry expresses his heart on what the world needs to know about missions, evangelism and Spain. Today's Topics: 1, 2, 3, 4) Gospel - Jn 20:1a and 2-8 - On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they put Him." So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered His Head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. Feast of Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist Saint John, pray for us! In this sermon, Pastor Ken challenges the traditional narrative of the Christmas story by exploring the true meaning of "no room in the inn." Delving into the original Greek text, he reveals that Mary and Joseph likely found shelter in a family home rather than being turned away by an innkeeper. This fresh perspective emphasizes the importance of hospitality and making room for Jesus in our lives. Pastor Ken encourages us to rediscover the wonder of Christmas by welcoming others, just as Jesus did, and to embody the compassion and radical hospitality that defined the early church. Today we are going to be talking about “Preparing our bodies, souls, and minds to whole-heartedly experience Christmas this year.” Christmas is a beautiful season that many of us anticipate. Spending time with our loved ones and celebrating the hope of Jesus can fill our hearts with joy, but it seems to happen every year, that while we intend to be present and focused on those things, other things begin to pull us in every direction. Whether it be parties, shopping for the perfect gifts, or decorating our homes, we're always trying to fit in all the things we want to do. Before you know it, the season is gone and we're left feeling like we missed something even though we tried to do everything! Our guest today, Jen Ludwig, author of the daily devotional, Embracing Advent: Rediscovering Christmas in the Chaos, is here to invite us to rediscover the gifts of hope, peace, and joy that God extends to every one so that we can experience more of Him this holiday season.
