Book Club Discussion Book Club questions found on Victoriamag.com Do you think the traditional “little women” roles celebrated in Louisa May Alcott’s classic are outdated in today’s society? What ideals do you believe are timeless? Who is your favorite character in Little Women, and why? Which character do you most identify with, and why? In Chapter One, Marmee reads a letter from Mr. March in which he exhorts the girls to “fight their bosom enemies bravely.” For Jo, her enemy was her temper; for Amy, it was her vanity. What would you consider to be your own bosom enemy? Have you discovered a way to manage it? Although the narrator is able to offer insight from each of the main characters, Jo’s voice rings above the others throughout the pages. How do you think the novel would differ if a sister other than Jo was the central character? Were you disappointed that Jo did not marry Laurie? Or do you think Professor Bhaer was better suited for her? Why? The complexities of sibling relationships—a jumble of childhood games, petty squabbles, family traditions, deep frustrations, and fierce loyalty—play out on every page of the novel. What moments best or most precisely illustrate the bonds between sisters? What scenes from Little Women linger in your mind long after you have closed the book? Weekly Love Christine: Schitt’s Creek (Pregnancy Test Episode) Ew, David Doormat Lindsay: Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick (in Truffle) Weekly Hate Christine: The weather we’ve been having (Hot, Cold, Rainy, etc) Lindsay: The Nordstrom Sale posts starting early (as of June 17) and telling people to open the Nordstrom card (bad advice to suggest people get in debt to shop a sale early) Christine and Lindsay both shop the sale and use the credit card, but feel talking about it a month early is overkill. The Nordstrom sale begins on July 12th. Will you be shopping it? Christine: Harry’s Fig Body Wash (http://bit.ly/2FwjhEY) (Affiliate Link) Christine mentioned this as her weekly love for this episode. It’s under $10.00 and smells incredible! Available where they sell Harry’s (http://bit.ly/2ZKj2xC) and available in two other scents. Weekly Hate Lindsay: Lack of diversity in the blogging world. Ever pay attention to blogger events? Alicia Tenise said it best (https://twitter.com/AliciaTenise/status/1141694857372676096). Christine: Shopping for men, in particular, for Father’s Day. It’s often impossible to shop for certain people in your life. Right!?!? An update my FIL received an outfit for Tennis and dinner! I’m sure you were all on the edge of your seat waiting for that update, LOL! Discussing The Idea of You By Robinne Lee This episode opens up discussion for our first ever book club pick for the podcast. We chose The Idea of You (https://amzn.to/2Ry1T7A) as it is a book that really took us by surprise! It’s sexy, it’s thought provoking, and it’s a great Summer read! It brings up a lot of important topics such as ageism, feminism and sexism. However, I think that most importantly, it shows us that a woman can be desirable, even at an age where we’re told that we can’t be. This book will have you wanting to pack your bags and head on tour with Hayes. It will have you blushing as the scenes are VERY descriptive. It will leave you asking yourself a lot of questions even after you finish reading this book. Bottom line, it’s a must-read book!
