Tonight, we'll read the 5th chapter to “Good Wives” written by Louisa May Alcott. This is also known as the second half of the “Little Women” novel. Originally, Alcott had it published as a second book but in later publishings the two were combined. Our last episode was the chapter titled “Literary Lessons” in which Jo, consumed by her writing fervor, neglects basic needs as she delves into her craft. She shifts focus from romances to thrillers inspired by a chance encounter. Entering a contest, she wins $100, enabling her to send Beth and Marmee for a seaside retreat. Her new genre proves lucrative, supporting her family. Though facing revisions and mixed reviews, she ultimately earns several hundred dollars from her published novel. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

The remarkable 2019 movie Little Women sent me back to my worn copy of the novel, especially the comforting words of Marmee, the wise and gentle mother. I’m drawn to the novel’s depiction of her steadfast faith, which underlies many of her words of encouragement to her daughters. One encouragement that stood out to me was this: “Troubles and temptations . . . may be many, but you can overcome and outlive them all if you learn to feel the strength and tenderness of your heavenly Father.” Marmee’s words echo the truth found in Proverbs that “the name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (18:10). Towers were built in ancient cities to be places of safety during danger, perhaps because of an enemy attack. In the same way, it is through running to God that believers can experience peace in the care of the One who is “our refuge and strength” (Psalm 46:1). Proverbs 18:10 tells us protection comes from God’s “name”—which refers to all of who God is. Scripture describes God as “the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6). God’s protection comes from His mighty strength, as well as His tenderness and love, which causes Him to long to provide refuge to the hurting. For all who are struggling, our heavenly Father offers a place of refuge in His strength and tenderness.

Today's interview with Carol McLeod is so powerful, encouraging and challenging for each of us. She loves God's Word with a fervency that is highly addictive! She talks about how God and His Word got her through multiple devastating pregnancy losses, depression and a cancer battle. Her joy was not dependent on her feelings or on her circumstances, but on God Himself. She talks about how important it is to stand up in faith and allow God to be our anchor. She has a new book coming out today called, Timeless: The Living and Enduring Word of God. I would encourage you to grab this and her other resources at the links below! Enjoy this episode and I pray it blesses you and others today! Bio: Carol McLeod is a sought-after speaker, best-selling author of 16 books and the host of two successful podcasts, including “Jolt of Joy”, a podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network which is ranked in the top 5% of podcasts internationally, and “Significant Women,” which is ranked in the top 10% of podcasts worldwide. Her weekly blog “Joy for the Journey” has been named to the Top 50 Faith Blogs for Women, and her YouVersion devotionals have been enjoyed by nearly 4 million people around the world.  In September, she is prepping to launch a weekly TV show, called “The Joy Life.”  Known for her great joy and enthusiasm, Carol encourages and empowers women with passionate and practical Bible-focused messages, interspersed with her own special brand of hope and humor. Her 16th book, “Timeless: The Living and Enduring Word of God,” which released June 27, 2023, dives into the book of 1 Peter. Even though it was written two millennia ago, it is as practical, hopeful, and up-to-date as anything written today. In this Bible study, Carol encourages us to find the timeless truths of Scripture found in Peter's words. It has an accompanying 9-week video teaching series, making it a great choice for small group study. Carol has been married to her college sweetheart, Craig, for 44 years and is the mother of 5 children in heaven and 5 children on earth.  Graduates of Oral Roberts University, Craig and Carol have spent the past 38 years pastoring churches across America. Currently, Craig is the North American Director for Global Partners and is training pastors and helping to plant churches in unreached areas of the globe. They are now enjoying being “Marmee” and “Pa” to their 10 delicious grandchildren ... whom Carol refers to as “The 10 Wonders of the World!” Anchor Verse: Psalm 16:11 Nehemiah 8:10b Acts 13:36 Connect with Carol: Website: https://www.carolmcleodministries.com  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/carolmcleodministries  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carolmcleod   Significant Women Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/significant-women-with-carol-mcleod-carol-mcleod/id1500029875  TV: https://www.carolmcleodministries.com/the-joy-life-tv App Through Apple:  https://apps.apple.com/us/app/carol-mcleod-ministries/id1614262418 ***This podcast is a proud member of the Spark Network! It's a minisode for episode 64 of a Story to Love podcast. This episode will cover my tips to write the first draft, in vibes. So, I finished the first draft of my first book in my forthcoming Harlequin series that's coming out in 2024. It was, as usual at times such a freeing exercise, and then crippling. There were moments in which I was in that zone of writing in which I don't feel the time pass, and then there were those times when I watched my Study Bunny timer click by in desperate molasses slow seconds. But, I made it through! I'm deep in first round revisions now, and over the pain of that first draft. I have received quite a few questions on how I draft, so I thought I'd share some tips on how to write that first draft, but in vibes. We're all so different in our process, in our writing and are surrounded by writers all in their different journeys, but I hope the vibe in my tips can help you out. Before we head on over though, I wanted to mention that my upcoming novel, When Jasmine Blooms, is up for preorder! For my readers out there, bring out the tissues. Also, know that this is a contemporary fiction novel, not contemporary romance! Now, there is still a marriage romance in this story, and the story ends in a hopeful tone, but it has threads of serious topics. I hope you love it. I hope you will be able to read my love for Marmee, Abigail Alcott, and mothers who have had to navigate grief in their lives. ***Preorder Tif's next book WHEN JASMINE BLOOMS, a contemporary fiction inspired by Marmee of Little Women, about a woman who suffers a great tragedy, wonders 'what if' and it comes true.Note: some links are affiliate linksContact Tif at tif@tifmarcelo.comPlease check out her website for podcast submissions

She even had mentioned it with Yellow Wife…that that story chose her, and it was the catalyst that nudged her off the contemporary fiction path to historical fiction. It felt like so many aspects and features of The House of Eve chose her too. To me, this episode was a reminder to keep my ears and eyes up. Maybe heed those nudges. Perhaps not self-reject quite as quickly. And as a storyteller, listen to what our characters are trying to say. At the moment, I'm editing my first book in my Harlequin series coming out spring of 2024, and re-listening to this conversation came at a perfect time. This is episode 60 of the Stories to Love podcast. Here with me today is Tracy BaduaTracy Badua is a Filipino American author of books about young people with sunny hearts in a sometimes stormy world. By day, she is an attorney who works in national housing policy and programs, and by night, she squeezes in writing, family time, and bites of her secret candy stash. She lives in San Diego, California, with her family. In this episode we talked about how this story had its own trajectory that required for her to dig a little deeper. We discussed hypercompetive schools, the concept of utang ng loob, the importance of diverse books, and what Perla, the protagonist in this novel, is doing now. As a note, This is Not a Personal Statement is a Harper Collins title, and currently there is a strike going on by the Harper Collins Union for fair wages, stronger diversity commitments, and union rights. As of the recording of this intro, the strike has been going on for 54 days. I support this union. Harper Collins has a responsibility to hire with fair contracts and as such, pay their employees fairly. To that, an additional disclaimer, I want mention that I was not paid for this episode, and it was me who sought this title to read in advance and to approach the author. Harper did not solicit in this instance. The Stories to Love is here to support authors and especially marginalized authors, and I am deliberate in making sure that I am showing support for both the collective good of the union as well as for the authors that need support for their books. Bronson Alcott was one of those who looked at the world in a new way.He looked for work as a teacher so that he could pass on his ideas to others. However, very few parents wanted Mr. Alcott to teach their children, and very few people were interested in hearing his speeches or reading his books. As a result, the Alcott family was very poor.Fortunately for Bronson, he married a very capable and energetic woman, Mrs. Abigail Alcott, helped to earn money to support the family and did most of the work involved in looking after the four Alcott girls. The oldest daughter, Anna, was quiet and serious. She rarely got into trouble and was a good helper at home. The second daughter was Louisa May Alcott, who became a writer. She was adventurous and cared very little for rules. She was always saying and doing things that got her into trouble. The third daughter, Elizabeth, was very kind and good natured. All the others loved her. As a young woman, Elizabeth had a severe case of scarlet fever and never fully recovered. She died at age 23.The youngest sister, may was talented, but she was rather spoiled.Because there was never enough money, the Alcott girls felt pressure to work at an early age.But this did not stop them from having fun.Louisa wrote little plays that she and her sisters performed at home. They all enjoyed the woods and ponds around Concord, Massachusetts, where they lived most of these years. When they moved back to Boston in 1848, Anna took a job looking after other people's children, and Louisa looked after the house.Meanwhile, their mother worked outside the home,.While working on laundry or sewing, Louisa was thinking up stories, at night she would write them down. When she was 18, she began selling poems and stories to magazines.Within ten years, Louisa was earning a substantial income from writing. One day, her publisher suggested that she write a story for girls. At first, Louisa didn't like the suggestion, but when she started to write, the ideas came rapidly. Her book was based on her own family and her own childhood.“Little Women” was published in 1868 and was an immediate success. The March family was very much like the Alcott.Mrs. Alcott resembles “Marmee”.“Meg” is like Anna and “Jo” is like Louisa herself.“Beth” is based on Elizabeth and “Amy” on May Alcott. Many of the situations in the book happened to the Alcott family.Nonetheless, many characters and incidents were invented little women. And its sequel opened up a new kind of writing for children. While these books did have a moral, they were more lively and interesting than earlier children's writing.“Little Women” inspired many writers later to write more realistic accounts of childhood.

Tonight, we'll read the next chapter of “Little Women” by American author Louisa May Alcott, published in 1868, titled “Letters”.You can listen to the whole series in order at snoozecast.com/series.The novel has been said to address three major themes: domesticity, work, and true love, all of them interdependent and each necessary to the achievement of its heroine's individual identity. According to many critics, Alcott created a whole new genre, one that took elements from romantic children's fiction and combined it with others from sentimental novels. Within the four different March sisters can be found the first vision of the "All-American girl.”In the last episode, a chapter called “A Telegram,” Marmee receives news that her husband has fallen ill in an army hospital. Her daughters, along with Laurie, Mr. Laurence and Mr. Brooks all rally to help in different ways. Jo cuts her long hair short at the barbers to earn some quick money, and Mr. Brooks plans to accompany Mrs. March to Washington DC.— read by 'V' — Listen Ad-Free on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Book Vs Movie: Little Women The Louisa May Alcott Classic Novel Vs. the 1994 Winona Ryder-Starring Film   The Margos take a trip back to mid-19th century America with the Louisa May Alcott novel Little Women which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 & 1869 and became a smash hit. To describe the life story of Alcott as fascinating does not do it justice. Hers was a life filled with riches and poverty, with humiliation and joy, with love and hate, with incredible access to the best writers in the world and the worst images of the Civil War and the damage it did to humanity.  Alcott’s father, Amos Bronson Alcott,  was a transcendentalist and educator who belonged with the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau in the Concord area of Massachusettes. She was raised to be an abolitionist and feminist and was raised to be independent. In her peripatetic life, she moved over 20 times in 30 years before becoming a successful writer and the highest-earning author in her generation.  Little Women is loosely based on her own family story of the protagonist, Jo, being a substitute to Alcott. In the novel we have Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March who are being raised by their mother “Marmee” and their father is serving as a chaplain during the civil war. The sisters are poor but smart and kind. They all have special talents and want to live life to the fullest.  Jo is the most modern with a lack of concern for marriage and society’s expectation of women. She is spunky and whip-smart. A hero to generations of girls, she had been played by Saoirse Ronan, Katharine Hepburn, Maya Hawke, and in the 1994 Gillian Armstrong-directed film Winona Ryder.   Released on Christmas Day 1994, it became an instant classic.  In this episode, the Margos talk about Alcott’s life, the original novels, and how they differ from the 1994 adaptation. So which did they like better? Have a listen and find out! In this ep the Margos discuss: The incredible life of Louisa May Alcott The success of Little Women and how it changed publishing Key differences in the most popular adaptations The cast: Winona Ryder (Jo March,) Trini Alvarado (Meg March,) Samantha Mathis (Older Amy March,) Kirsten Dunst (Younger Amy March,) Claire Danes (Beth March,) Christian Bale (Laurie,) Eric Stoltz (John Brooke,) Gabriel Byrne (Friedrich Bhaer,) Susan Sarandon, (Marmee,) and  Mary Wickes (Aunt March.)  Clips used: Little Women  trailer  Jo declines Laurie's proposal Amy declines Laurie's sorta proposal Beth gets a piano for Christmas Music by Thomas Newman Join our Patreon page to help support the show! https://www.patreon.com/bookversusmovie  Book Vs. Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat is the featured guest on this Score to Screen podcast. Desplat reflects on how he crafted the modern score for Little Women by drawing on personal memories with his sisters, utilizing two pianists and four hands to represent the women in the film, and recording in New York City with various esteemed musicians. Little Women is written and directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) and draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott. In Gerwig's take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms – is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March. Composer, orchestrator and conductor Alexandre Desplat is one of the most worthy heirs of the French film scoring masters. A true cinephile, his approach to film composition is not only based on his strong musicality, but also on his understanding of cinema, which allows him to intimately communicate with directors. Inspired by the works of Maurice Jarre, Bernard Herrmann, Nino Rota and Georges Delerue, he expressed his desire to compose for cinema early on but really made his decision after listening to John Williams' Star Wars score. After scoring fifty European films, with legendary French directors such as Philippe de Broca and Francis Girod, in 2003 he burst onto the Hollywood scene with his evocative score to Peter Webber's Girl with a Pearl Earring. In 2007 he received his first Academy Award nomination for Stephen Frears' The Queen which earned him his first European Film Award. The same year he won the Golden Globe, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award and the World Soundtrack Award for his score to John Curran's The Painted Veil. In 2010-2011 Desplat scored David Yates' films Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. In 2018, Desplat won an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water. He was nominated in 2019 for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs, and in 2020 for an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA for Little Women. She has an emotional roller coaster at the actual ball- pride, embarrassment and finally tipsy revelry. She hears more talk about her and her family that she doesn’t appreciate. Meg feels glad to be home, and gets heartwarming advice from her mother. Marmee tells her that it is more important to be a good person, and to be happy, than to be too focused on marrying into wealth lest one be miserable.— read by 'V' —

Marmee March is, without a doubt, my favorite literary character of all time. And not only that, but I kind of want to be her. She is full of kindness, goodness, wisdom, and grace. She is loving, just, and sweet. I doubt she ever had a #momfail. Well, actually she admitted to Jo that her temper needed some work back when she had four extremely little women running around the house (and who amongst us can say otherwise?) So add humility to her list of honorable traits. Like Mary Poppins, Marmee is, in my opinion, practically perfect in every way. I’m currently re-reading Little Women for, like, the 5th time and I just never get tired of it. I love the character development, the emphasis on the March family’s bond, and how the relatability of the book has stood the test of time. But most of all, I love Marmee. God bless her. Upon my current reading, I’m noticing yet again the sage wisdom Marmee offers, but also how she was wise beyond her years when it came to self care. If you will allow me to be just a bit liberal with Louisa May Alcott’s beloved text, I would like to share three self care lessons straight from the immortal Marmee March.

As a novel, "Little Women" had been published in two volumes, one in 1868 and the other in 1869, but the volumes are combined in the film, interwoven together in a rearranged timeline that jumps back and forth, spotlighting their hopes and dreams as teenagers, then tempering those ambitions with the grimmer realities of the real world in their adulthood. It spins the yarn of four young sisters with artistic and romantic ambitions - Jo, Amy, Meg, and Beth - living with their mother Marmee while their father is off fighting in the Civil War. Much of this film adaptation by writer-director Greta Gerwig concentrates on Jo's story regarding her ambition and struggle to become a published writer. Throughout the course of the film, we see her maturation by finding her voice, both as a woman and as a writer. Featuring Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Timothee Chalomet, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, and Meryl Streep.

What ideals do you believe are timeless? Who is your favorite character in Little Women, and why? Which character do you most identify with, and why? In Chapter One, Marmee reads a letter from Mr. March in which he exhorts the girls to “fight their bosom enemies bravely.” For Jo, her enemy was her temper; for Amy, it was her vanity. Or do you think Professor Bhaer was better suited for her? Why? The complexities of sibling relationships—a jumble of childhood games, petty squabbles, family traditions, deep frustrations, and fierce loyalty—play out on every page of the novel. What moments best or most precisely illustrate the bonds between sisters? What scenes from Little Women linger in your mind long after you have closed the book? Hello, darlings!  Sorry we've been a bit tardy with this month's ep.  We've been busy trying to turn our new house into a home!  And speaking of happy homes... Is there any home that seems more warm and full of familial bliss than the March family home in this month's film, Little Women?  Winona Ryder at her absolute charming best, Trini Alvarado as the consummate eldest sister, Claire Danes ugly crying in a non-annoying way, and Kirsten Dunst as the pain-in-the-ass lil' sis!  And don't forget the ultimate cool mom, Susan Sarandon, as Marmee!  Plus some young Christian Bale action, pre-batsuit! Chrysten loved watching this movie with her little sister when they were kids.  Dan...has never even heard of Little Women.  Can our wife-host convince our husband-host of the glories of this female-centric (as well as female directed AND female written!) film?  Join us and find out!  And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE!

A tangent episode in which Kaisha, Kelsey and Dylan engage in literary madness. Come along as we chat about the fictional character we always wished we could be. Find out our top literary heroes and who we would invite to dinner. We discuss our favorite reads, favorite villains, and the characters we wished were our friends. Kelsey demands never to be called Marmee. Dylan tells bad jokes. Kaisha overanalyzes the questions. We all fall into the Val Kilmer pit of movies and get derailed by melancholy books made into movies. Kaisha tells us who she wants to be her best evil friend. We debate the merits of the prologue.
