Just in time for Giving Tuesday, we're excited to share the latest episode of our Journey To Radiance podcast, in which we explore valuable insights to accompany us along the "Journey To Giving." In this episode co-hosts Dr. Phyllis Hubbard and WolfHawkJaguar interview Shaka Jamal, a culturally innovative artist and filmmaker from Oakland, California, about the importance of leveraging your time, talents, and treasures towards the greater good. Shaka is a film producer, director, cinematographer, editor, writer, performing artist, and music producer who is the first filmmaker from Oakland to receive the Game Changers Fellowship, leading him to premiere a series of micro-documentaries in New York at Harlem’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Shaka's work has premiered both nationally and internationally, on television and in numerous film festivals. He is a graduate of Tuskegee University where he earned a BA in History, and received a Master’s of Fine Arts in Cinema at San Francisco State University. With April being National Poetry Month, the Campaign for Black Male Achievement is excited to present the newest episode of our "Journey To Radiance" podcast series! In this installment, Dr. Phyllis Hubbard, Director of CBMA Health and Healing Strategies, and co-host WolfHawkJaguar go with Oakland's own Dr. Ayodele Nzinga, an award-winning producer, actress, director, poet, playwright, and activist, on a journey through the multi-dimensional Black experience through the eyes of the "WordSlanger." In addition to being an artist, Dr. Nzinga is the Founding Director of The Lower Bottom Playaz, Inc., which made history in 2016 by becoming the first theater troupe in the world to stage August Wilson's entire work "American Century Cycle" in chronological order. This podcast episode was produced in recognition of Black Mental Health Awareness month and features a conversation with panelists Dr. Daktari Shari, Anthony Scott, CBMA Health and Healing Strategies Director Dr. Phyllis "Dr. Phyl" Hubbard, Mikhael Ali and Larica Luckett, with CBMA Member and podcast host WolfHawkJaquar. Learn more about each panelist below and enjoy the show! “Daktari” Shari R. Hicks, Psy.D. is an Oakland-based dancer, psychologist, and sakhu djaerist (spirit illuminator). Since earning her doctorate in clinical psychology in 2015 from the California Institute of Integral Studies, Daktari is a licensed clinical and forensic psychologist, working mostly with parolees, probationers, sex offenders, severely physically ill, and geriatric clients. In 2016, Daktari founded the Daktari Dance Medicine Collective (DDMC), an unapologetically Black:Afrikan collective of divinely-inspired healers who tap into the mediums of drum, dance, ritual, rhythmic breathplay, meditation, mirroring, cleansing, and ubuntu to evoke spiritual liberation and illumination for Black:Afrikan folks all over the globe.Mikhael “Magik” Ali (Brother Olou) is a holistic practitioner, crystal healer, plant-based culinary chef, healing space facilitator, community activist, and peace keeper. Mikhael advocates for natural healing via ancient spiritual practices and living an alkaline plant based lifestyle.Larica Luckett recently started her private practice as a Reiki Therapist, and Energy and Crystal Healer. She has a BA in Psychology, Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy, and is currently obtaining her license as a Board Certified Behavior Analysis. Anthony Scott is a twenty-two year-old artist from Oakland California who came to share his health & healing journey as well as learn from the panelist. In honor of CBMA's 10th Anniversary and Juneteenth, this latest podcast episode in our Journey to Radiance multimedia series explores and celebrates African-American heritage, legacy and entrepreneurship through the story of Mama Shekina Shakur and the inception of the healing "Gorilla Life" drink. Combined these two create the perfect marriage to demonstrate CBMA's commitment to improving life outcomes for Black men and boys through an infusion of arts/culture and health and healing. For our latest installment of our "Journey To Radiance" podcast series, we feature Tyson Amir, a lyricist who is blessed with a poignant message, electrifying cadence, and enlightening lyrics, all combined to form music with enough heart and soul to move a generation. Tyson is not only a poet, emcee, educator, author, activist, but is also a self-described freedom fighter. In honor of Women's History Month, we are excited to launch Episode Four of CBMA's "Journey to Radiance" multimedia series, featuring artist, activist, musician, poet and Warrior Woman of Peace Charlotte O'Neal, also known as "Mama C." In the episode, we learn about Mama C's history with the Black Panther Party in Kansas, MO. In the 1970's, she was forced to flee the U.S. to Tanzania with her husband Pete O'Neal, where they settled and launched the United African Alliance Community Center (UAACC). Tune into the learn about her time as part of the Black Panthers, her journey of identity as a Black woman in Africa, and how she uses the arts to teach and heal.
