Acknowledgement of Country// Hamid Khan and Matyos Kidane - Stop LAPD Spying CoalitionPriya caught up with Stop LAPD Spying Coalition's Hamid Khan and Matyos Kidane in July 2024 to talk about organising with unhoused community in downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row and beyond against militarised policing and surveillance by the Los Angeles Police Department. In this wide-ranging conversation about the group's work, broadcast in three parts across August 2024, Hamid and Matyos also discuss Stop LAPD Spying Coalition's abolitionist ethos, the importance of a structural analysis of police violence, and emphasise why it is crucial to resist liberal reformism and academic and non-profit complicity in state violence.// Tamar Hopkins and Ilo Diaz - Centre Against Racial ProfilingWe replay a conversation from October 2024 with Tamar Hopkins and Ilo Diaz of the Centre Against Racial Profiling, who joined us to speak about the launch of the Racial Profiling Data Monitoring Project. The project's website, racialprofilingresearch.org, hosts important data showing the extent of racial profiling in Victoria Police during street searches obtained via Freedom of Information requests covering four years worth of police search records. Tamar has been working in the area of police accountability and racism since 2005. She was the founding lawyer of the Police Accountability Project at Flemington & Kensington Community Legal Centre in Melbourne Australia in 2009. She has a PhD from UNSW on racial profiling, and has appeared as an expert witness at inquests and commissions investigating police accountability and racial profiling. Ilo has worked directly with communities experiencing human rights abuses in Melbourne, South America and Palestine. His background is in Human Rights observing in areas of conflict. Ilo also volunteers with Melbourne Activist Legal Support, providing his expertise to Legal Observer teams that observe police actions in protests.// Justice for Sonya Massey Oakland RallyThe Anti Police Terror Project joined organisations around the United States to coordinate a rally calling for Justice for Sonya Massey on the 29th of July 2024 in Oakland, California. Sonya Massey was a 36-year-old Black mother who was shot and killed by Deputy Sean Grayson of the Illinois Police Department on 6 July, 2024, after she called the police with concerns about an intruder entering her home. The rally was MC'd by APTP's Cat Brooks, and the recording we played in today's show (originally broadcast in August 2024) features poetry by Oakland's first Poet Laureate Dr Ayodele 'WordSlanger' Nzinga, as well as reflections from Uncle Bobby and Big Oscar, the uncle and father of Oscar Grant, who was killed on New Year's Day 2009 by Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland.//

Welcome to the season six finale! On today's episode, we go out with a bang and discuss Queen Nzinga, one of the most badass African warrior queens in history. Nzinga was trained to be a warrior and a diplomate from the time she was small, which came in handy when negotiating with the Portuguese at first for her wimp of an older brother and even more so when she became queen in her own right. Nzinga had a massive effect on her kingdom and the modern country of Angola, which still views her as a proud part of their history. Join me on this episode to hear her story. Marty Walsh has spent his life fighting for working people, as a labor leader, as a public official, and as a private citizen. Marty, the son of Irish immigrants, was born and raised in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood. In 1997, at the age of 29, Marty won election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he spent 16 years fighting for workers' rights and good jobs. In 2013, he was elected Mayor of Boston, an office he served for seven years. He led Boston through a period of historic success, growing the city's economy, reducing crime, investing in schools and libraries, and ending chronic homelessness among veterans in the city. In February 2023, Marty was appointed as the Executive Director of the National Hockey League Player's Association, returning to his roots as a labor leader where he can continue to champion the importance of workers' rights and the shared benefits of collective bargaining for all. Today's episode is called Alcoholics Anonymous 101 because Marty shares his deep respect for the program that saved his life. He and Nzinga discuss political legacy, the purpose that steers Marty's recovery, and what it means to give your recovery away. If you're curious about AA, struggling with isolation in your addiction, or have doubts about what your potential is as someone in recovery, listen to this episode. ___ Dr. Nzinga Harrison's book, "Un-Addiction: Six Mind-Changing Conversations That Could Save a Life" is out now! EP. 212ABOUT THE EPISODE:When Dr. Nzinga Harrison was recently approached by her son, a high school senior, about going to his first party, she consented. He was unsurprised by her followup question: “Do you think there will be drugs there?” As an addiction psychiatrist and M.D. specializing in addiction medicine, Dr. Harrison had been talking with him about substances since he was very young, so the question wasn't awkward. “Yeah, probably,” he replied. As her stomach twisted, she realized that the years of preparation for this stage of his life were about to be tested – if not at the party, then sometime soon afterward. In the two years since our favorite doctor was last on the show, Dr. Harrison has organized much of her extensive knowledge about the roots of substance use disorders into a new book: Un-addiction: 6 Mind-Changing Conversations That Could Save a Life. The framework is comprehensive and data-driven, but also plainly written and easy to understand. I tried using sticky notes to mark the best parts, but gave up when I realized I was marking almost every page.In this conversation, Dr. Harrison lays out these six conversations, sharing with us how the conversation with her son progressed, and covering a range of other topics, including:Conversational scripts for talking to kids about substancesThe importance of asking, “What do you know?” without judgmentThe nascent idea of “pre-addiction” and how understanding it can change the trajectory for someone strugglingHow your ZNA (zip code at birth) predicts health outcomes better than your current zip codeHow cultural traditions and rituals can create risk factorsEPISODE RESOURCES:Un-Addiction bookEleanor HealthDr. Nzinga Harrison's websiteThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Episode No. 12 of the Art Throb Podcast features Dr. Fari Nzinga who is the Curator of African and Native American Collections at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, KY. In addition to caring for and stewarding these collections, she coordinates special exhibitions as well.  Our conversation focuses on the current exhibition at The Speed Museum that Dr. Nzinga curated - Louisville's Black Avant-Garde: Robert L Douglas. Douglas, who died this past February at the age of 88, had been involved in the planning stages of his exhibition.  He was Professor Emeritus at the University of Louisville, a visual artist, community organizer, teacher and mentor to generations of artists and thinkers.  This exhibition of his work features more than 30 of his paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures and presents rarely seen work from across the span of his career demonstrating the breadth of his artistic practice and the depth of his impact both locally and regionally.Douglas was drawn to the work of the German Expressionists of the early twentieth century and their use of color to convey atmosphere and emotion.  He directly references these painting techniques in several of his works in this show with his use of bright and intense color, simple shapes, textured brushwork and the generous application of paint.  Douglas' work is at once rife with visual references drawn from art history and uniquely his own. He explores many themes in his work, including (but not limited to): Defining Black art and aesthetics; connections between Africa and African America; standards of beauty and femininity; art and everyday life; and improvisation and abstraction in the creative and artistic process.Louisville's Black Avant-Garde is intended as a four-part annual series spotlighting leading artists of the Louisville Art Workshop.  The first in this series with the work of Professor Robert L Douglas opened June 30 in the Chellgren Gallery on the second floor of the Speed Art Museum and will run until October 1, 2023.See examples of the art works mentioned at our website, https://www.artsconnectlex.org/art-throb-podcast.html

'Western Civilisation' is often thought of as a continuous thread through the centuries - from classical antiquity to the countries of the modern West - connecting Plato to NATO. But in her new book - The West: A New History of an Old Idea - archaeologist and historian Professor Naoìse Mac Sweeney charts the history of 'the West' as an invention used to justify imperialism and racism - a notion that can be disproved by the lives of 14 historical figures. In this episode of Not Just the Tudors, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb talks to Professor Mac Sweeney, about four of these fascinating figures - Tullia d'Aragona, Safiye Sultan, Francis Bacon and Nzinga of Ndongo & Matamba - whose remarkable lives correct our telling of Western history. This episode was edited and produced by Rob Weinberg. For more Not Just The Tudors content, subscribe to our Tudor Tuesday newsletter here.If you'd like to learn even more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe today!
