This material and theoretical history of seriality shows it to be the dominant form of culture since its inception within 19th-century print culture, as both a media structure and a psychic one. The serial is everywhere. Commonly identified by the segmented release structure of an ongoing narrative—from installments of Victorian novels to TV episodes to comic books—seriality names the spread of installment-based storytelling across a range of media. However, Ryan Engley argues that seriality is not only a narrative structure but also a psychic structure. Seriality—in its dependence on gaps, delay, and constraint—names the fundamental trauma of contemporary life: that there exists an intrinsic relation between self and other, a relation that is often difficult to see and difficult to bear. Through formal readings of media texts alongside Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis, the dialectical method of G.W.F. Hegel, and Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialism, Seriality: Media and the Psychic Form of Everyday Life (Bloomsbury, 2026) shifts the focus of seriality studies. In so doing, Engley presents a rebuttal to the common refrain that our lives, like contemporary media, have become endlessly fragmented. Rather, Engley finds, we have become radically—serially—connected. Ryan Engley is Assistant Professor of Media Studies at Pomona College, USA, where he teaches and researches the intersection of psychoanalytic theory and media studies. Along with Todd McGowan, Engley co-hosts the podcast Why Theory, which brings Continental philosophy and psychoanalytic theory together to examine contemporary phenomena. Bön is among the oldest indigenous spiritual traditions in the world. It originated in Central Asia thousands of years ago in what is now Tibet and is still being practiced globally today. Rooted in ancient cosmology, visionary practices, and ritual technologies, the tradition of Tibetan Bön offers a distinctive and sophisticated understanding of mind, embodiment, and awareness that speaks directly to contemporary questions in psychology, comparative religion, and consciousness studies. * In this episode globally renowned master in the Bön Dzogchen tradition Geshe Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche discusses consciousness through the lens of the Tibetan Bön tradition. Tenzin Rinpoche is joined by CIIS Transformative Inquiry Department faculty Dr. Constance Jones and Dr. Fernando Ona, whose approaches create a fertile ground for inquiry into the nature of consciousness. * This episode was recorded during an in-person and live streamed event at California Institute of Integral Studies on April 23rd 2026. Things You'll Learn: Health care improvement starts with supporting the workforce caring for patients every day. Equity requires addressing the communities that continue to be left behind. Public health lessons from HIV remain highly relevant today. Person-centered care should be designed around what matters most to patients. Technology should strengthen trust, not simply automate processes. AI, cybersecurity, and digital transformation require strong leadership and governance. Patient advocacy remains essential for reducing disparities. Meaningful improvement begins by listening to patients, caregivers, and communities. Becca Tarnas, assistant professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, joins to discuss her doctoral research into the parallels between Carl Jung's Red Book and J.R.R. Tolkien's lesser-known visionary writings. The central claim: working independently, both men produced strikingly similar imagery, timing, and figures — Jung's Philemon and Tolkien's Gandalf, the Eye of the Evil One and the Eye of Sauron — while each insisted their material felt discovered rather than invented. From there the conversation moves through active imagination, the reality of archetypes, psyche versus mind, and the line between mystical insight and psychosis — a wide-ranging look at where imagination ends and reality begins. Paul Krauss, MA, LPC, and world-renowned EMDR pioneer Dr. Laurel Parnell discuss how all mental health treatments as well as trauma treatment can be both more effective and more accessible. Together they explore the power of EMDR therapy, the research and early skepticism surrounding it, and how EMDR interfaces with other healing modalities around the world to accelerate perspective shifts, open the heart, and support deep inner alignment. The discussion also highlights how EMDR therapy does not erase memories but helps the nervous system clear the emotional residue of triggers so that experiences move from psychological, self-defining memory into objective memory, allowing people to reclaim their natural gifts, energetic sovereignty, and a life not limited by past trauma In this episode, Dr. Parnell and Paul discuss how EMDR therapy can help people change more quickly by integrating fragmented traumatic material, creating new pathways for healing, and supporting clients to feel both safer and more free in their bodies and relationships. They delve into the nuances of psychological versus objective memory consolidation, the importance of inner resources and inner alignment, and how EMDR can be combined with transpersonal psychotherapy to invite experiences of connection, meaning, and spiritual opening. Drawing from Dr. Parnell's own journey, including the tragic loss of her son, they examine the limits of conventional trauma treatment and the emergence of Multidimensional Integrative Healing (MDIH) as a way to work across physical, emotional, psychological, somatic, and spiritual realms in service of post-traumatic growth rather than mere symptom reduction. The conversation further explores how clinicians can safely integrate transpersonal psychology, energetic traditions, and Eastern spiritual practices within a grounded therapeutic frame, including working with phenomena such as shamanic experiences and releasing unwanted energetic attachments. Also, they discuss how to work with people from all spiritual orientations, including multiple faiths, agnostics, and atheist clients. Dr. Parnell describes clinical steps for helping clients identify what energies are truly theirs, release what is not, and stand in their own power, guided by an innate healing intelligence that moves toward wholeness when properly supported. Ultimately, she emphasizes that the goal of EMDR and MDIH is not simply desensitizing trauma, but helping clients reclaim the radiant presence of their True Nature so they can live more authentically, creatively, and compassionately in the world. Dr. Laurel Parnell is an internationally recognized clinical psychologist, EMDR trainer, and leading expert on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, best known for developing Attachment-Focused EMDR and Resource Tapping. She has trained thousands of clinicians nationally and internationally, has taught transpersonal psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies and John F. Kennedy University, and continues to offer EMDR trainings and Multidimensional Integrative Healing programs through institutions such as Alliant International University, Omega Institute, Esalen Institute, and the Parnell Institute Dr. Parenell's Releasing What Isn't Yours, expands on her Multidimensional Integrative Healing framework and the clinical process of helping clients recognize and let go of energies and burdens that do not belong to them, reclaim their energetic sovereignty, and reconnect with their True Nature. Self-Sabotage: How We Try Not to Flourish (Polity Press, 2026) contends that an unconscious impulse to undermine our own interests plays a dominant role in our lives. The idea of a primary drive to self-destruction is at odds with the prevailing common sense in a world where almost everyone believes that we strive to flourish. Yet often we fail to flourish not because some people are wicked but because the drive to sabotage ourselves outweighs the pleasures of flourishing. Our tendency to self-sabotage distorts our politics, throws off our romantic relationships, and generally makes human existence difficult. It is why we become involved with partners who continually create unhappiness for us, and also why we elect leaders who derail the nation. Although the act of self-sabotage is clearly self-destructive, it appeals to us because it has a creative power. Through sacrificing ourselves, we create sublime value in the world. Our willingness to sacrifice our own interest elevates the value of the object we pursue and lifts it out of the realm of the ordinary. Self-sabotage leads to immense amounts of social harm. But at the same time, the tendency to self-destruction provides the basis for our ability to act ethically and surmount social pressure in the name of some higher value. He is the author of Embracing Alienation, The Racist Fantasy, Emancipation After Hegel, Capitalism and Desire, and Only a Joke Can Save Us, among other books. Being with the Body in Depth Psychology: Development, Trauma, and Transformation in the Unspoken Realm (Routledge, 2024), featuring a foreword by Donald Kalsched, examines the integration of the subjectively experienced body in the practice of depth psychology. Barbara Holifield draws from philosophical perspectives, neuroscientific and infant research, developmental theory, and trauma studies to offer a comprehensive overview of embodiment within a relationally based psychoanalytic approach. Clinical vignettes demonstrate the critical value of working with the bodily-felt dimension of implicit relational memory and emphasize how bodily-felt sense facilitates access to feelings. The primacy of bodily-based knowing revealed through infant research illuminates an interior world of sensorial apprehension that conceptually based knowing and psychoanalytic thought often overlook. Furthermore, it establishes the body as intrinsic to relational life. Freud's 1923 statement that “The ego is first and foremost a bodily ego,” is as cogent today as it was then (1961, p. 26). It has only been confirmed by infant research and affective neuroscience. Psychic life is born in the body and is sustained by the body. It is in and through the body that relationship begins. Disruptions in one's earliest relationship with the primary caregiver are synonymous with disruption of the integral unity of psyche and body. Further, the book highlights the organizing role that felt sensation, sensory perception, and affective experience have on facilitating the re-establishment of psyche indwelling the soma. Because disruptions of the felt sense of psyche integral to soma occur in infancy, work of this nature falls out of the purview of traditional psychoanalysis. “It requires instead a working-through focused on the present, on the heart of the analytic relationship, and on the activation of an awareness of one's own inner mode of functioning” (Lombardi, 2017, p. 23). Focus on direct sensorial and relational experience in the body is foundational in working with the analysand's unformulated experience. As this occurs, affects are able to be borne, reflected on, and lived as feelings-in-the-body while simultaneously making way for the establishment of new relational organizations. Throughout the book, clinical examples show how the mythopoetic imagination and soma entwine––at times, attention to the somatic dimension stirs the creative unconscious in the form of dreams, active imagination, artworks, and movement. Reciprocally, the imaginal world informs and stimulates somatic experience. In this way, the mythopoetic reality revealed in a depth analysis weaves somatic experience into a tapestry of personal meaning, facilitating deep psychophysical transformation. Here the body serves as a portal to the numinous––healing that goes far beyond the relief of symptoms to a renewed sense of aliveness. This book offers guiding principles for psychotherapists and clinicians of all levels to engage the bodily basis of experience in their clinical practice. It will appeal to general readers interested in integrating mind and body, including those in the healing arts, fine arts, dance, athletics, meditation, yoga, and martial arts. Barbara Holifield, MSW, LMFT, SEP is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. With over forty years of clinical practice in depth psychotherapy and somatic healing — and her certification as a Jungian Analyst since 2006 — her work lives at the intersection of Jung and the body, bringing together somatic experiencing, affective neuroscience, relational psychoanalysis, and the wisdom of the bodily-felt sense to offer a path of healing for those who have suffered developmental trauma and its long aftermath. A certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) trained directly by Dr. Peter Levine, Barbara taught Somatic Psychology for approximately twenty years at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) — one of the foremost graduate programs in somatic and depth psychology in the United States. She is also an internationally recognized teacher of Authentic Movement, a contemplative body practice rooted in Jungian active imagination that she has taught across the United States and abroad for approximately forty years. Her clinical writing explores the relationship of body, trauma, self, and our participation in the dream of the earth. Her articles have been published in Jung Journal: Culture & Psyche, Psychological Perspectives, and the Journal of Analytic Psychology. She has also contributed a chapter to The Body in Psychotherapy (North Atlantic Press) and a chapter to the anthology Authentic Movement: Moving the Body, Moving the Self, Being Moved (Jessica Kingsley Publishers). She maintains memberships in the International Association of Analytical Psychology (IAAP), the United States Association for Body Psychotherapy (USABP), the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (IARPP), and the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT). A creative, body-based guide to healing for queer, trans, and gender-expansive readers—somatic tools and expressive arts to feel safer in your body, rewrite your story, and sustain connection. Queer Expressions: Expressive Art and Somatic Therapy Practices for Healing Body Trauma (North Atlantic Books, 2026) is a practical, consent-centered guide to healing body trauma through embodiment and creativity. Drawing on somatic therapy—grounding, breath, orientation, gentle movement—and expressive arts—collage, drawing, clay, movement, music, voice—within a harm-reduction frame of pacing, choice, and safety plans, Wednesdae Reim Ifrach (REAT, ATR-BC, LPC) shares grounded practices, case vignettes, and simple rituals to help you move from shut down or on high alert into steadier, more connected living. Inside you'll find: Body check-ins (quick prompts to name sensations and needs), short breath & movement practices (1–10 minutes), and sensory prompts (sight/sound/touch/smell/taste) Art invitations (collage, drawing, movement, sound/voice) with step-by-step guidance and safety notes Consent & harm-reduction tools (opt-in/out menus, pacing, crisis planning) to keep the work manageable Community practices & rituals (altar-making, release-writing, witness circles) to anchor change in daily lif A queer-centered lens on healing, embodiment, and creativity Warm, inclusive, and usable on your own or with a therapist, Queer Expressions helps you build a more livable relationship with your body—and a story big enough to hold who you are becoming. A new paradigm that honors the wisdom and wholeness of neurodivergent clients. Focusing on autism and what is medically known as ADHD, neurodivergent author Nyck Walsh takes readers on an anti-oppressive, intersectional journey into a new standard of care for neurodivergent clients and their therapists. Whether new to or well-versed in the neurodiversity paradigm, readers will learn how to best support their neurodivergent clients in a way that prioritizes their well-being, honors their self-expertise, encourages their anti-ableist embodiment, and celebrates their joy. Bridging the theoretical with the practical, Walsh's model offers a tangible framework that can be applied on its own or in tandem with other modalities. Neurodivergent Somatics in Therapy (Norton, 2026) is an intimate and engaging guide to providing accessible, liberatory, whole-person care that will benefit clients and therapists of all neurotypes. Movement and Identity: Multiculturalism, Somatic Awareness and Embodied Code-Switching (Singing Dragon, 2025) is a trauma-informed approach to counselling and bodywork explores the ways in which varying facets of identity and culture manifest in the body, allowing a much more nuanced, person-centred approach to client care. Marcia Bonato Warren, MA, MA, LPC describes how our bodies interpret our identities, often informed by cultural norms, communication styles, trauma, and systems of power and oppression. Therapists and bodyworkers reading this book will have the opportunity to engage personally and professionally, learning to build on their own somatic awareness in order to engage with compassionate curiosity rather than resistance when confronted with identity-based differences. Each section uses the SIA Loop, a mechanism representing three entry-points we use to process information: Sensation, Interpretation, Action, which supports the deeper work offered by the Identity Expression Infinity Loop, where identities are invited to move with strength and skill. These pioneering tools allow readers to examine their own somatic experiences, beliefs, behaviours, and choices, all of which is supplemented with journal prompts and questions. In guiding readers in how to interpret the body's expression of identity, this unique guide maximises the potential of therapists to foster change, increase empathy, and nurture connection through trauma-informed, somatically aware bodywork. Marcia Bonato Warren, MA, MA, LPC is a Somatic Counselor/Body Psychotherapist and Interculturalist with over 10 years of experience in the fields of somatic counseling and education, as well as 15 years of experience in international educational exchange and Native American policy and advocacy. She works with individuals and groups in the areas of cultural awareness, social justice, and intercultural communication through a trauma-informed lens, and is passionate about developing the potential in human beings to embrace diversity through cultural embodiment and the sharing of stories and creativity. With rejection and intense commitment being such integral parts of any artist's life, many struggle to stay with the creative process. Author and CIIS Faculty in the Interdisciplinary Arts program, Cindy Shearer has spent decades helping artists stay with their craft. In her book, Stay with Writing, Cindy encourages writers to understand themselves as artists, and for artists across all mediums to learn about themselves from writing. She offers practices for artists across mediums to help sustain and live a creative life. * In this episode Cindy is joined by theater artist Emlyn Guiney. Together they dive into the nature of artistic practice, meaning-making, failure, and ways to reconnect with yourself, your art and your process. * This episode was recorded during an in-person and live streamed event at California Institute of Integral Studies on March 5th 2026. In this episode, Amy sits down with Deborah Santana—author, philanthropist, and lifelong spiritual practitioner—for a conversation that explores what it means to live from inner sovereignty. While many may recognize her through her 34-year marriage to Carlos Santana, this conversation clarifies something more essential: Deborah Santana has lived a deeply self-directed life shaped by spiritual inquiry, service, and the willingness to begin again. Her memoir, Loving the Fire, becomes the thread through which we explore transformation—not as an abstract idea, but as a lived experience of loss, identity shift, and conscious rebuilding.Key Themes Explored1. Early Life and the Roots of Inner StrengthDeborah reflects on her upbringing in San Francisco, shaped by a family that quietly modeled independence and devotion. Her father, Saunders King, was a respected musician who chose presence over fame—offering an early model of values rooted in family rather than recognition. Her childhood was also grounded in spiritual diversity, moving between Pentecostal, Lutheran, and contemplative spaces. This early exposure created a foundation of spiritual curiosity that would later evolve into a lifelong meditation practice.2. Identity, Culture, and AwarenessDeborah shares her experience growing up in a multicultural environment, where belonging felt natural—until moments of racism revealed deeper social realities. These experiences did not define her, but they did shape her awareness. Over time, they became part of the “fire” she would learn to walk through rather than avoid.3. The Fire: Loss, Transition, and ReinventionA central moment in Deborah's life—and in this conversation—is her decision to leave a long-term marriage and step into the unknown. She describes this period with clarity:A sudden shift from a full, externally defined life into silenceThe loss of roles, identity, and structureThe necessity of sitting with herself, without distractionRather than rushing to rebuild, she allowed a period of stillness:Studying the work of Wayne Dyer and Thich Nhat HanhEngaging in self-inquiry through Al-Anon principlesReturning to yoga and meditation as stabilizing practicesThis was not framed as breakdown, but as disassembly for the purpose of reorganization.4. Loving the Fire: A Different Relationship to ChallengeThe central teaching of Deborah's memoir is simple, but not easy:Life is not happening to us—it is happening for us.She describes fire not as destruction, but as a condition for renewal. Like a forest that regenerates after burning, human life can reorganize into something more aligned—if we stay present through the process. This reflects a core principle in yoga therapy:We do not eliminate discomfortWe change our relationship to itWe allow it to inform growth5. Spiritual Practice as a Stabilizing ForceDeborah has maintained a meditation practice since her early twenties. During times of transition, this inner relationship became her anchor. She describes moments of:Deep peace in solitudeHeightened perception in natureA sense of connection beyond identityThese are not framed as extraordinary experiences, but as natural outcomes when external roles fall away and attention returns inward.6. Rebuilding with IntentionFollowing this period of reflection, Deborah began to rebuild her life in alignment with her values:Founded the nonprofit Do A Little, inspired by Desmond TutuProduced documentary films to support global humanitarian effortsWorked with organizations connected to Nelson MandelaBecame a founding donor of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and CultureHer work consistently centers on women, girls, and collective well-being.7. Education and Lifelong LearningIn her 50s, Deborah pursued a master's degree in Women's Spirituality at the California Institute of Integral Studies. This experience reflected a pattern throughout her life:Learning as a form of self-developmentIntegrating intellect with lived experienceValuing wisdom traditions alongside modern inquiry8. Global Perspective and HumilityTravel—particularly to Africa—played a significant role in reshaping her worldview. She describes:A felt sense of humanity's originsA reorientation away from individual-centered thinkingA deep respect for cultural wisdom beyond the U.S. lensThis aligns with a therapeutic perspective: healing often expands when we move beyond our habitual frame of reference.9. Current Work: Courage and EmpathyDeborah is currently involved in developing the Courage Museum in San Francisco, a project focused on:Understanding violence as a learned behaviorTeaching empathy as a skillCreating immersive experiences like “Empathy Mirrors,” where individuals witness and feel others' lived experiencesThe intention is clear: violence can be unlearned, and empathy can be cultivated.Clinical and Philosophical ReflectionsThis conversation offers several points of integration for yoga therapists and healthcare providers:Transformation often begins with disruption of identityStillness and reflection are not passive—they are reorganizing forcesSpiritual practice provides continuity when external roles dissolveGrowth requires both self-inquiry and self-responsibilityMeaning emerges not by avoiding difficulty, but by engaging it with awarenessClosing ReflectionDeborah Santana's life illustrates a steady principle:We are not defined by our roles, relationships, or accomplishments. When those fall away, what remains is the foundation we build from. Her story is not about reinvention as performance. It is about returning to something more essential—and choosing, from that place, how to live.Learn MoreLoving the Fire by Deborah SantanaAvailable via her website and major booksellersUpcoming events and book tour information available online

Where do we get ideas about the lives we want? And, what do we do - and fail to do - about actually getting them? In The Life You Want Adam Phillips uses psychoanalytic and literary approaches to show that we are obsessed by the idea of our lives being ones we want and enjoy rather than merely endure, tolerate or make the most of. Through a series of interlinked essays, Phillips explores the difficulties we have around the whole idea of enjoying - and fashioning - our lives in cultures that insistently promote enjoyment while making it very difficult for so many people. Exploring the personal and political overlap in the issue of our lives, The Life You Want (FSG, 2026) is a profound examination of our ambivalence about enjoyment, and indeed, wanting. Adam Phillips, formerly a principal child psychotherapist at Charing Cross Hospital, London, is a practicing psychoanalyst and a visiting professor in the English department at the University of York. He is the author of numerous works of psychoanalysis and literary criticism, including Missing Out, Unforbidden Pleasures, In Writing, Attention Seeking, On Wanting to Change, On Getting Better, and On Giving Up. He is also the general editor of the Penguin Modern Classics Freud translations and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In today's conversation, we dive into the topic of intergenerational trauma with Mark Wolynn, the author of It Didn't Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle. Mark is a leading expert in inherited family trauma and the director of The Family Constellation Institute in San Francisco, where he trains clinicians and works with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, panic disorders, obsessive thoughts, self-injury, chronic pain, and illness. Mark regularly leads workshops and trainings at hospitals, clinics, conferences, and educational centers across the globe. He has presented at institutions including the University of Pittsburgh, Western Psychiatric Institute, Kripalu, Omega Institute, New York Open Center, and the California Institute of Integral Studies. This discussion outlines: What inherited family trauma really is. The connection between epigenetics and trauma transmission across generations. How trauma work can help identify and heal deeply rooted emotional patterns. What "unconscious loyalty" means, and why we often repeat painful family dynamics without realizing it. Practical ways to begin breaking generational cycles and creating emotional resilience. Even patterns that feel intensely personal may have roots that extend far beyond your own experiences. This conversation explores how inherited emotional wounds can quietly shape relationships, behaviors, fears, and identity — often without us realizing it… Learn more about Mark: Mark Wolynn Official Website Buy It Didn't Start with You on Amazon
An essential guide to healing from oppression-based trauma, for everyone left outside of mainstream conversations There are many books on trauma healing that can change people's lives. Yet when queer and trans people, people of color, and all of us living at the margins look for books that reflect our own experiences and that specifically name the oppression we experience as trauma, we're left empty-handed. There's little that speaks to the specific traumas we experience: homophobia, transphobia, institutional injustices, isolation, medical trauma, and discrimination at every turn. We deserve to have ourselves reflected and considered in the world of trauma recovery. In Healing the Oppressed Body: A Therapeutic Guide for Radical Self-Liberation (Penguin, 2026), somatic therapist Andrea Gutiérrez-Glik provides the best tools and approaches to healing trauma and filters them through an anti-oppression lens, making sure they're uniquely impactful for all of us at the margins. In these pages, you'll learn how trauma is stored and processed by our minds and bodies and how we can work with our amazingly flexible brains and nervous systems to create pathways to healing. You'll understand just how and why trauma that occurs in our earliest days can affect us throughout our lives. You'll learn to embrace your Internal Family, making yourself whole. In Healing the Oppressed Body, Andrea Gutiérrez-Glik lovingly offers us the best, most radical solutions to tap into our sources of healing. Along the way, you'll discover tools and techniques for emotional regulation and therapeutic modalities to heal from oppression-based trauma. Whether inside the therapy room or on your own, in the pages of Healing the Oppressed Body, you'll learn how to heal through growing compassion for all parts of yourself and others, finding community support and love, and celebrating the freedom to be your true self.Andrea Gutiérrez-Glik, LCSW, is a psychotherapist specializing in treating OCD, cPTSD, and PTSD, prioritizing women, survivors, and queer and trans folks. She utilizes EMDR, IFS, I-CBT, and ERP to help clients feel safe in the present and come home to themselves. Gutiérrez-Glik is also an EMDRIA-approved consultant for therapists getting certified in EMDR and a regular teacher at Alma, the Trauma of Money(tm), and other mental health organizations. This week Nicola and Di chat with the wise and insightful Dr. Shefali. Dr. Shefali is a world-renowned clinical psychologist, international parenting expert, and a New York Times bestselling author of 7 books including The Conscious Parent, The Parenting Map and A Radical Awakening among others. She’s also the host of the Parenting & You podcast, founder of the Conscious Parenting movement and has been a guest several times on Super Soul with Oprah. In this episode we talk to Dr. Shefali about what it means to be a conscious parent and how you can become aware of your patterns and belief systems by recognising that your child is a mirror to your unresolved issues. It’s not only our children, we talk about the powerful way that all relationships are like mirrors that show us where we still have places to heal and lessons to learn. Dr. Shefali shares some great examples from her own life as a parent, and how we can practically begin to break down our patterns and not project our expectations onto our children. She helps us understand that there’s no such thing as a perfect parent or a perfect human - we are all learning and evolving. Dr. Shefali shares about her childhood in India and how she always knew she wanted to leave because of the inequalities she witnessed there. At the age of 21 she moved to the United States, where she studied at the California Institute of Integral Studies and Columbia University and began integrating Western psychology and Eastern philosophy in all of her work. We also talk about her book A Radical Awakening, which helps women see how to break free from societal expectations and live authentic lives. Dr. Shefali talks about the choice we are sometimes faced with between being authentic to ourselves or authentic to the views of others, and that the greatest gift you can ultimately give others in your life is to choose to be authentically yourself. This is such a beautiful and powerful episode, whether you’re a parent or not, because all of Dr. Shefali’s wisdom can be applied to any relationship in your life. We’re so grateful we had this time with Dr. Shefali, who joined us all the way from New York, and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did. Seedkeeper, author, mentor, and founder of Sierra Seeds, Rowen White is a passionate activist for Indigenous seed and food sovereignty. With the increasing industrialization of our food and the erosion of biodiversity within cultural contexts, Rowen works to guide and mentor mindful eaters and food/seed sovereignty leaders in their capacity to lead, vision, and nourish a deep-rooted transformation. For Rowen and many others, cultivating a culture of belonging needs to be at the heart of food systems change—inviting a diversity of perspectives and voices, cosmologies and values. * In this episode, Rowen is joined by CIIS Associate Professor of Anthropology and Social Change Michelle Glowa for an inspiring conversation exploring Indigenous seedkeeping and food sovereignty. * This episode was recorded during an in-person and live streamed event at California Institute of Integral Studies on November, 19th 2025. When it comes to love why do we find things so difficult? Drawing on over forty years of candid and surprising conversations with his patients, Stephen Grosz asks, what gets in the way of our falling in love? And what must we do to stay there? In the intimate space of the consulting room, we meet the woman who can't post her wedding invitations but then, decades later, can't decide whether to get divorced; the friendship group that explodes when an adulterous affair begins; and the man whose partner's death is almost too much to bear.As an analyst, Grosz's unerring ability is to locate what ails the heartsick. As a writer, he elegantly shows how we can deploy the agonies of love as tools for understanding. The labour of love is the work of a lifetime but in finally learning to see ourselves and our world clearly, we find we are truly ready to love one another. Today I sit down with Sanjay Manchanda, who is an Adjunct Professor at California Institute of Human Science and also teaches at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Sanjay is an awakening facilitator, a practicing psychotherapist, and an inventor and technologist with a PhD in computer science. In this conversation, we talk about the importance of integration after awakening, psychedelics, shadow work, and a helmet that pulses infrared light into the brain to facilitate spiritual experiences. Along the way, we raise the important question of whether we will ever be able to create an enlightenment machine.Resources related to this conversation:Sanjay's Neuromatrix Headset: https://neuromatrix.health/Ultrasound research by Jay Sanguinetti: https://www.jaysanguinetti.com/Arnold Mindell, Dreambody: The Body's Role in Healing the Self (1982).Les Fehmi, The Open-Focus Brain: Harnessing the Power of Attention to Heal Mind and Body (2008).YouTube videos: Awareness Explorers, Neuroscience of Meditation SummitFor information about Sanjay's Monday morning group Multidimensional Fundamental Well-Being, personal coaching, and therapy sessions, contact sanjay.manchanda1@gmail.com. Researcher, author, and PhD candidate Chiara Baldini has spent two decades tracing the roots of ecstatic culture in Europe — from the rituals of Dionysus all the way back to Bronze Age Crete and the ancient Minoans, a civilization that thrived for over a thousand years before classical Greece. In this conversation, Chiara makes a compelling case that the Minoans may have been the only advanced civilization of their era not built on domination — their palaces functioning as community spaces rather than elite residencies, their frescoes showing priestesses, dolphins, and bull-jumping athletes rather than kings and conquest. She explores what their art, architecture, and animist relationship to nature might offer us now — not as a culture to imitate, but as proof that patriarchy is not inevitable, and that a radically different set of values has thrived before. Chiara Baldini is a scholar, author, speaker and freelance curator from Florence (Italy). She investigates the evolution of the ecstatic cult in the West, particularly in Minoan Crete, ancient Greece, and Rome, contributing to anthologies, psychedelic conferences, and festivals. She was a member of the Boom Festival team since 2010 and the curator of Boom's cultural area Liminal Village from 2014 to 2023. She has co-curated the anthology “Psychedelic Mysteries of the Feminine.” She is currently a PhD candidate at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). Tantra and Yoga are practices rooted in Indic spiritual traditions that share long, intertwined and complex histories. Often, we encounter tantra and yoga as forms of exercise, self-care, sex, or as pathways to personal wellness. However, these powerful, multifaceted practices are much more than that. * In this episode, Dr. Anna Corwin, Chair of the CIIS Women's Spirituality Program facilitates an illuminating conversation between Dr. Sundari Johansen, Assistant Professor of Women's Spirituality, and Anjali Rao, yoga practitioner-educator and author of Yoga as Embodied Resistance. * This episode was recorded during an in-person and live streamed event at California Institute of Integral Studies on October, 16th 2025. Body as Shadow: Jung's Method of Embodied Healing is Jungian analyst Erica Lorentz's passionate, clinically grounded argument that Jung's psychology was never meant to be “head-only.” It was always an embodied practice, one that asks us to meet psyche where it actually lives: in sensation, emotion, energy, imagination, and what Jung called the somatic unconscious or subtle body. At the heart of the book is Lorentz's central method: embodied active imagination, a way of working in which inward attention to a symptom, sensation, or emotion becomes a portal into imaginal material and archetypal depths, without forcing interpretation or prematurely translating experience into words. This approach is shaped by her long apprenticeship in Authentic Movement (also known as Movement as Active Imagination), where the psyche is allowed to emerge through the body in a protected relational container and a non-directive witnessing stance. Lorentz argues that many modern approaches to trauma and psychotherapy remain constrained by a left-brain bias: we attempt to heal through insight, narrative, and cognitive explanation, while the original wound and the original healing energy often sits below language. Drawing on Jung's own words from the Zarathustra Seminar, she emphasizes the mysterious interlocking place where body and psyche become indistinguishable: where we cannot know if we are in matter or in psyche, because we are in both. Throughout the book, Lorentz bridges what is too often split in Jungian circles: developmental work and archetypal work. She insists that when we work with complexes, we must come to terms not only with childhood roots, but with the archetypal core “on its own ground”, because the archetype is not a metaphor; it is a force, and one we encounter in a bodily way. Erica Lorentz, M.Ed., L.P.C., is a Jungian analyst (IAAP) and training analyst at the C. G. Jung Institute of New England. With early roots in dance and decades of experience in Authentic Movement (Movement as Active Imagination), she integrates depth psychology with embodied and imaginal approaches to healing. Trained in object relations and shaped by clinical work with autistic and psychotic youth, she has taught and lectured widely on Jung, the body, and embodied active imagination across the US, Canada, the UK, and internationally, including teaching in India in 2024. What is up, Theology Nerds! This week I'm joined by my buddy Matthew Segall from the Footnotes to Plato Substack to announce something exciting: we're doing a joint reading group on Hartmut Rosa's new book Time and World. Rosa's a German sociologist who does big-picture thinking—like old school "let me tell you about modernity" stuff—and his work resonates deeply with process philosophy. His diagnosis? We're stuck in what he calls a frenetic standstill—exhausted, burnt out, running faster just to stay in place. I gave Matt my above-ground pool whirlpool metaphor: we're all running in circles, and if you stop, you get pulled under. Modernity promises us the good life through control—making everything available, accessible, attainable—but the cost is a mute world and the birth of monsters. Rosa's antidote isn't slowing down; it's resonance—a mode of relationship where we're genuinely touched, we respond, we're transformed, and we accept it's all gloriously uncontrollable. Process folks will eat this up: it's Whitehead's prehension, creativity, and divine persuasion in sociological clothing. The invitation? Stop. Listen. Let the world address you again. If you want to join us for the Zoom sessions this February, become a member of either Process This or Footnotes to Plato—preferably both. See you soon. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Join us at Theology Beer Camp, October 8-10, in Kansas City! Dr. Segall is a transdisciplinary researcher and teacher who applies process philosophy to various natural and social sciences, including consciousness. He is also an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness Program at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA. And, what difference does it make? This Lenten class begins where all of Dr. John Dominic Crossan's has work begins: with history. What was actually happening in Galilee in the 20s CE? What did Herod Antipas' transformation of the "Sea of Galilee" into the commercial "Sea of Tiberias" mean for peasant fishing communities? Why did Jesus emerge from John's baptism movement proclaiming God's Rule through parables—and what made that medium so perfectly suited to that message? Only by understanding what Jesus' parables meant then can we wrestle with what they might demand of us now. The class is donation-based, including 0, so join, get info, and join up here. A science-backed guide to discovering the real power of magic and implementing it in your life, from the renowned author of Real MagicThere is an idea that shakes the core of our scientific principles: That our consciousness participates in creating our physical reality. It's an idea that runs counter to the materialist worldview we're all taught in school. But the outer edges of scientific inquiry bleed into what can only be called 'magic.'Dean Radin, Ph.D., is at the forefront of researching magic from a scientific standpoint. In The Science of Magic, he shines a light on today's scientific breakthroughs, from quantum mechanics to the mind-body connection to telepathy, that can best be explained by what we currently call magic (or psi). In short, today's magic is the science of tomorrow. He shares his own groundbreaking research on psi phenomena, and explains how you can start utilizing these findings in your own life today.Accessible and practical, The Science of Magic offers magical methods from the perspective of a scientist, demonstrating how to effect change with exercises and hands-on techniques. In short, magic is a mental skill, like meditation or mathematics. You will find a quiz to discover your natural talents and foundational activities for strengthening your skills, including:• Affirmations (word magic)• Sigils• Knots• Candle magic• Writing magic• Spell-castingWith his uniquely science-backed approach, Dean guides you through testing magic on your own, for example through dream precognition, evoking synchronicity, and more. The Science of Magic is a journey to the outer edges of our understanding of the universe, showing where science is leading us: namely, to magic.Dean Radin is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), Associated Distinguished Professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and cofounder and chairman of the biotech company, Cognigenics. He earned an MS (electrical engineering) and a PhD (psychology) from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and in 2022 was awarded an Honorary DSc from the Swami Vivekananda University in Bangalore, India.
