Gavin and Dan, amazingly, haven't recorded a chat about anywhere in Italy...until now. Canadian soccer journalist John Molinaro joins to chat about a trip to the very tip of the boot that is Italy. He took in a match between his beloved Juventus and Reggina.
San Pedro Sula, Honduras. It's not a popular place for Canadian soccer fans. It's the place where World Cup qualifying campaigns go to die. Fans forever lament the infamous 8-1 loss there in 2012. Gavin's been there 4 times. And he's got a soft spot for the place that often has a dubious reputation. The city's problems are certainly well documented but...it's also a place of great food, friendly people and stunning natural beauty.
Dan takes us back to his roots. He and Gavin chat about Shrewsbury and the local club, Shrewsbury Town FC.
Dan and Gavin are back after a long absence. Sorry about that but we explain why (we promise there were good excuses). In the newest episode, Dan explains that Manchester is more than just City and United! He focuses on Oldham Athletic and (the former) Bury FC.
Ever wonder what it's like to follow your favourite team during a major international tournament? Find out on this episode! Dan and Gavin speak with Croatia supporter Tom Domjancic about his time following Croatia through the group stage all over France during Euro 2016!
It's gone now but the Boleyn Ground at Upton Park is one of the classic English football grounds. The home of West Ham United, the stadium has seen some great players and teams over the years. On this episode, Gavin and Dan fondly remember their trips to that park of London and the community around it.
Dan and Gavin are joined by Jeffrey Nesker from "Waking the Red." He shares stories about his honeymoon in Belgium, focusing on a Royal Antwerp game. They also talk about beer...naturally. Jeff's video of Antwerp can be found here: https://vimeo.com/343292372.
It's episode 20! And it's been a while! There's a good reason why that the guys explain. For episode 20, the guys talk about New York City (both soccer and non-soccer travel). They discuss both New York City-area's MLS stadia.
After some tech issues caused a bit of a delay, Dan and Gavin are back again. Dan reminisces on what he can remember from his university days in Sheffield and love of Hallam FC. Gavin takes us back to 2015 when Canada's men's national team played in Dominica. He lets people in on setting up a one-man band video stream and match commentary setup.
Harjeet Johal (better known as Harjournalist) joins Gavin and Dan to talk reminisce about Grenoble, France, one of the host cities for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. Of course, Canada can't resist talking about cycling when talking about a city at the foot of the Alps.
Richard Fleming joins Dan and Gavin to talk about his experiences at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations in Mali. From green paint being used to make pitches look good for TV to taxis with the floors falling out, Richard won't ever forget his first AFCON. He also shares his experiences on why the tournament is unique in the football world. This is a really fun one!
Dan and Gavin talk about their respective experiences in and around Wembley Stadium (the old and the new). This episode includes an amateur psychological analysis of Dan's self-loathing tendencies of his English heritage...it also ends with a bit of a rant.
Gavin and Dan are back for a new year and while travel is still but a dream as we enter 2021, maybe it'll happen again soon? Gavin looks back at a 2013 trip to Brazil when Canada's women's soccer team played in a 4-team tournament in Brasilia. Dan talks about Columbus, Ohio--a city that very nearly lost their MLS team.
Gavin takes us back eight years to when Canada played Cuba in a World Cup qualifier in Havana in 2012. Canada were 1-0 winners on that day. They'll talk about that game but, as always, the travel experience and quirky stories that come with covering soccer in a different part of the world.
Another episode and another guest. This time, Sean Dunlop, a teacher currently in Thailand, speaks with Dan and Gavin. Sean shares his stories about living in the city, the food and the time Diego Forlan came there to play. Also, Gavin doesn't pass off a chance to poke fun at Dan and the declining British Empire.
The guys head to the Czech Republic (Or Czechia) this week. Dan talks about his experiences attending a game at Bohemians and Gavin once worked at a Canadian men's national team game against the Czech Republic in Olomouc. Prague has become quite the tourist destination but Gavin and Dan try to push out beyond the tourist traps and share some of their stories.
Dan and Gavin are joined by Jonathan Tannenwald from the Philadelphia Inquirer. He's covered the Philadelphia Union from the very beginning. He talks about the adventure it takes to get to Chester for a Union game and sells the guys on the city of Philadelphia (and does a pretty darn good job of it).
The guys mark episode #10 of their niche travel/soccer podcast. After marking the little accomplishments so far, Gavin reminisces on a trip to St. Lucia covering a World Cup qualifier against Canada in 2011. Dan takes us to England's northeast to talk about St. James' Park, the home of Newcastle United.
Montreal is the destination this week as Dan and Gavin share what makes the city so special to them. Believe it or not, neither of them have been to a game at Saputo Stadium since it was renovated but there are plenty of memories in the stadium before it was upgraded for MLS and at the Olympic Stadium. And yes...Gavin goes on at length about the Expos.
New York Post Senior Writer Kirsten Fleming joins the guys to enlighten them on the Basque region and, specifically, Bilbao. She does a great job selling the region and the people...one day we'll actually be allowed to visit.
Dan and Gavin are back with another pair of destinations that are tied together in what they'll say is a "theme." Gavin talks about travel to Frisco, Texas, the home of FC Dallas (the bulls), while Dan reminisces about travel to Calgary, Alberta--the home of Cavalry FC, who play at Spruce Meadows (the horses).
This episode is sponsored by the letter B...sort of. Dan talks about Grimsby Town's Blundell Park and the city in general. Gavin talks about his experiences in Bermuda, where the Canadian men's national team played in a friendly in 2017. They digress into stories of fishing conflicts, widgets in beer cans, people owning ducks and the legend of Shaun Goater.
Gavin and Dan are back for episode 5. Gavin shares his love for Seattle, Washington. Dan, meanwhile, is excited to see a soccer game in Chicago after having to head all the way out to Bridgepoint to see the Chicago Fire once before.
This week, the guys talk about 2 stadiums that no longer host soccer. Dan shares his adventures to Underhill, the former home of Barnet FC while Gavin reminisces about Highber, the former home of Arsenal FC.
The Untitled Soccer Travel Project--Episode 3--Peru and El Salvador by Newspapers on Seats
For this episode, Gavin and Dan discuss their travels to Panama City, Panama and to a Pumas UNAM game in Mexico City. They talk about the food, beer, people and general travel experience.
Journalists Gavin Day and Dan Rouse have covered soccer around the world. That's allowed them to have some interesting experience thanks to the beautiful game. They have stories that don't make their coverage of soccer and decided they wanted to swap stories that others could hear. In episode one of their still unnamed podcast, the guys talk about their experiences in Bulgaria.
