We know the importance of literacy and music and the importance of getting children involved in learning through movement. What if we paired the two together, no matter the age of the students? That's what Suan Chodakiewitz is doing through Booksical's, creating musicals from picture books for some fully immersed learning. And what she's discovered as a result is more confidence and more engagement from children of all levels. Educational professionals have long tried to encourage children to build their literacy skills while getting the community involved in education. The idea that a picture book can be acted out helps children explore characters, plot, and backstory, and it allows both pre-readers and older students to work together on a common end goal. And who doesn't love the idea of hiding some of the learning during a fun and interactive lesson? Listen in to Susan talk about how to bring any picture book into an interactive classroom, why improvisation and acting is such a powerful way to learn, and how to bring literacy into the community. We also talk a bit about the benefits of being multilingual and how Susan got to where she is. I love the idea of booksicles so much that I've invited Susan to work with us at my micro-school, LEADPrep. About Susan Tresser Chodakiewitz: Susan Chodakiewitz is an author, composer, and producer. She is the founder of Booksicals children's books and Picture Book Musicals. Her passion for igniting a love of reading in children has led her to create the Booksicals Literacy Through the Arts program, an interactive performing arts curriculum where theater and the arts become a teaching tool for literacy and social-emotional learning. Susan is the author of seven children's picture books: The Alphabet Thief, Selah the Peach, Master Davey and the Magic Tea House, Wobegon and Mildred, Mr. Snoozle's Exquisite Eggs, Too Many Visitors for One Little House and soon-to-be-released Mother Nature ABC verses. Susan partners with brands and businesses to promote literacy and a love of reading and has created books and literacy projects for brands such as the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Westin Hotels Kids Club, and the Gap Kids. Susan Chodakiewitz is a frequent author presenter at schools, museums, book fairs, and libraries and has presented both in the U.S. and around the world. She is a graduate of the Academy for New Musical Theater and a member of the New Musical Inc, advisory board. Susan holds a degree from the University of Miami in chemistry and French and a pharmacy degree from the University of Florida. She was born in Havana Cuba, raised in New York and has lived in Florida, North Carolina, Toronto, Israel, and southern California. She speaks fluent Spanish, Hebrew, and French. All her books are available in Spanish. Susan currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and is blessed to have three sons, a daughter, and three amazing daughters-in-law. August 27, 1900. Dr. Jesse Lazear, a U.S. Army surgeon, walks into Las Animas Hospital Yellow Fever ward in Havana Cuba, toting a brood of mosquitos. He has the system down: remove the cotton stopper that keeps the mosquito penned in its glass vial, turn the vial over, and seal it against a consenting infected patient's skin. Chasing the source of Yellow Fever, scientists try to understand this deadly plague by running a high-stakes medical experiment on human subjects. But today, those subjects will include themselves. Why did ordinary people—and the doctors running the experiment—willingly and knowingly consent to take part in this study? And when we look back, should we be horrified... or impressed? Special thanks to our guests: Dr. Kathryn Olivarius of Stanford University and author of, Necropolis: Disease, Power, and Capitalism in the Cotton Kingdom, as well as Molly Crosby author of, The American Plague: The Untold Story of Yellow Fever the Epidemic That Shaped Our History. For the first 4 Saturdays in July, Voice of the Water Lily will be doing a 4 part celebration of ‘La Guarachera' Celia Cruz for the 19th anniversary of her passing. This week's episode will talk about her early years in Havana, beginnings in music and how she became a part of illustrious Sonora Matancera. Ursula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso wa born on October 21, 1925 in Santos Suarez, Havana Cuba. Her talent was evident from a very young age. Despite her father, Simon Cruz's, concerns that music was not a stable or reliable career, Celia had the support of her mother, Catalina (who everyone called Ollita) and her aunt, Ana. In her teen years she sang on amateur radio contests, before she got a job at several major radio stations including CMQ and radio cadena suaritos. After Myrta SIlva decided to return to Puerto Rico, La Sonora Matancera was left without a lead singer. Celia's debut with the band was August 3, 1950. Surprisingly, Celia was not accepeted by Myrta‘s fans at first, some ven sent her mean letters telling her to quit the band. Soon after, Rogelio Martinez (director of La Sonora) wanted to record an album with her. At the time, La Sonora was signed with Sydney Siegel's 'Seeco' records. Siegel was apprehensive and told Martinez that “women didn't sell records and were only good for live performances'. Rogelio argued back that if Celia's records didn't sell, Seeco didn't have to pay her, Rogelio and the band would be responsible for it. Siegel agreed. Not only did Celia's records sell, but right off the bat, she had several big hits. How ironic it is that several years later it was Sydney Siegel who presented her with an award in New York City for her ongoing success. You'll hear about all this and more in this week's episode.
