Galvia AI, one of Ireland's leading artificial intelligence companies, has announced a partnership with Sheffield Hallam University to improve student experience by implementing their AI Student Engagement Platform As a part of this collaboration, the university has launched the "Hallam Helper", a 24/7 AI chatbot designed to provide instant, personalised assistance for the university's 28,000 students on a wide range of topics spanning wellbeing, university life and campus facilities. This partnership coincides with Galvia AI's opening of its Manchester office, advancing the company's expansion into the UK and marking a significant step in the company's broader European growth strategy. Leveraging its success and momentum with large enterprise entities, the company is now focusing its ambitions across European markets, including Germany, Poland, Switzerland and The Netherlands. Galvia AI also plans on doubling its workforce in 2025, to meet the increasing demand for its cutting-edge AI solutions. Commenting on the partnership, John Clancy, CEO of Galvia AI said, "At Galvia AI, we aim to simplify the complexities of AI, and guide organisations through the often daunting experience of adopting emerging technologies. We are excited to extend our AI-driven solutions to Sheffield Hallam University, allowing them to benefit from a tailored approach to AI deployment in enhancing student services. "With Galvia gaining traction across the UK and Europe, we are looking forward to developing similar projects across key markets to make a significant impact. Dave Thornley, Head of Digital Architecture at Sheffield Hallam University said: "By integrating AI-driven support, we're providing students with a more seamless introduction to university life, making support more accessible, straightforward and immediate, and the remarkable uptake by students demonstrates this. Galvia understood our desire to extend the reach of our student service teams, rather than just replace human interaction. Their structured approach and particular experience with wellbeing queries allowed us to deploy the solution with confidence. Through unifying our data, we are now better placed to understand the evolving needs of our students, ensuring we can deliver the right support at the right time." The Hallam Helper can be accessed through Sheffield Hallam's university and mobile app, offering students real-time, 24/7 support. Through utilising conversational AI and machine learning, the chatbot delivers on-demand virtual assistance while providing the Student Services team with valuable insights into student behaviour, through its surveys and trend analysis. This data then enables university staff to better understand the evolving needs of the student population at Sheffield Hallam. See more stories here.

Today on the Brain Booster with one of the legends of Skill Acquisition and Ecological Dynamics, Professor Keith Davids from Sheffield Hallam university We had a wonderful conversation a few years ago and we got the chance today to update the current position around skill acquisition and how this can benefit your game The problem with coaching models Over emphasis on body parts and what that does to the learning process The limitations of language The ecological perspective Adapting to and being in tune to your environment Solving the problem of the golf shot as a unique moment in time The myth of automaticity Repetition without repetition How coaches should constantly be setting players problems to solve How we should see the golf course as a series of puzzles to solve Dealing with and adapting to constant changes The extreme value of adaptability and how to perform on any given day What can rock climbing teach us about ADAPTABILITY As Keith says the very best athletes are the most ADAPTABLE How to engage your training in an ecological way As a Professor of Motor Learning in Sport & Human Performance, Keith uses an Ecological Dynamics framework for investigating skill acquisition, expertise and talent development in sport. He is an applied scientist who researches how processes of learning, development, performance preparation and participation in sport, physical activity and exercise may be facilitated. He reviews implications for coaching and teaching at elite, sub-elite and recreational levels of participants, as part of his work. Ecological Dynamics is an integration of Ecological Psychology, Dynamical Systems theory, Evolutionary Science and the Science of Complex Systems, considering individual athletes and teams as complex adaptive systems, self-organising under interacting constraints. Such systems change over different timescales, which has significant implications for learning, development and ageing in children, adults and elderly people. He has over 30 years experience of teaching and conducting research in Ecological Dynamics. With a deep understanding and lived experience of how trauma and life events can create stress, fear, and dis-ease, Karen has a passion for helping people move beyond perceived limitations towards expansive possibility. “Ability is a state of mind not a state of body” infuses Karen's approach. A climbing accident that resulted in paraplegia led her away from studying gold as a ‘rock-doctor' into becoming a ‘mind miner', exploring experientially how we can learn to be our own alchemist and transform the ‘mud' of life to discover ‘inner gold'. Karen likes to shine a light on the meaning of challenge and on the limitless possibilities of the human spirit, enhancing performance, wellbeing, and meaningful contribution to the connected web of the world. Exploring the boundaries of what is possible is something Karen has personally embraced. Her curiosity for what it takes to overcome self-doubt, face fear, and step-up performance has led her to her own experiments in high-performance sport and also in pushing the boundaries of adaptive adventure exploration. She becameParalympic hand-cycling champion (Rio 2016), World Champion in Paratriathlon, a silver medalist in her first Paralympic games (London 2012), and is the Guinness World Record holder for land speed by arm power, each time requiring deep engagement with her intrinsic motivational stack. She has also sit-skied across Greenland, sea kayaked at extreme latitudes of the planet, handcycle across the world's big mountain ranges and with coastlines and rivers of all the continents. These experiences combined with unique studies of the mind, resilience, and performance have led to helping people view life as an adventure, and to embrace all its' experiences as opportunities to learn and grow. Whilst hand-cycling and adventurous journeys are Karen's primary flow activities, coaching and expanding possibilities for others is her second. She is fascinated with the power of the mind and language to positively impact emotions; improving presence, performance, and possibility. Much of her spare time is leading Quest 79, a community-focused organization with the aim of creating and supporting inspirational projects that connect people and communities to enhance inner gold and possibility. Karen has an MBE, a Ph.D. in Earth Science, an MA in Development Training, and a second MA in High-Performance Coaching, and Diplomas in Clinical & PastoralCounselling, Hypnotherapy & Motivational Coaching. She has been awarded honorary doctorates from The University of Aberdeen, Leeds, Cumbria, Sheffield Hallam, and Abertay Universities, in recognition of her contributions to adventure and high-performance sport. She has written three biographical-based books about overcoming challenges, facing fear, and positive psychology tips for achieving surprising things: If You Fall; Boundless; Quest 79: Find Your Inner Gold. --- If you order Steven's new book, The Art of Impossible, right now, you'll get $1,500 of free bonuses immediately dropped into your inbox.  They include secret chapters he has never released, masterclasses on key skills to help you jack up motivation, heighten creativity, and accelerate learning. You'll also get an entirely free training to help you fight distraction and spend more time in flow.  So click the link here, snag yourself a copy of The Art of Impossible, and let's get after it.

The Compassionate Leadership Interview
Mike Kent, a manufacturing and e-commerce journey

The Compassionate Leadership Interview

Mike Kent is Co-Founder and Managing Director of Kitlocker, Sheffield sportswear manufacturer and distributor, and an Associate Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University. Kitlocker is an online retailer specialising in sportswear, and employing around 100 staff. Before Mike and his fellow MD Tom Ward ran Kitlocker they studied at Sheffield Hallam and played volleyball. After university Tom had the opportunity to play volleyball professionally, but opted to join Mike in implementing the business plan that Mike had produced in his second year. Mike wouldn't necessarily commend the approach Tom and Mike took to equip themselves for success. In the early years they were “incredibly insular.” Only after the first decade did they become more externally facing. Building out their sales and marketing function was a catalyst for this. Recently the business has started to look at its education and training needs, but that's more with an eye on the next generation of leaders in the business rather than on the founders. Mike sees his leadership role as being about “understanding where we are, where we are heading, and shaping the company to cater for the step changes that we encounter.” As the company has grown, making plans and communicating them has become more challenging. The aspects of thebusiness that enthuse Mike are problem-solving, particularly in relation to the e-commerce and manufacturing systems, and the people. Mike is intent onensuring that the company's strategy, systems, and people are congruent. Mike's approach to leadership has evolved with the business and experience, and is a blend of empathy for team members, support for the development of individuals, and quite an ”autocratic” style. A directive style is not natural to him, but has been a response to the young talent the company has recruited via University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) placement schemes. His favourite takeaway from SHU's ‘Leading through Health and Wellbeing' course (which Mike, Dave Hembrough and Chris Whitehead have all completed) is “ruthless on the issue, gentle on the person.” He concurs with Peter's Drucker's quote “culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Kitlocker, however, does not have a single culture, indeed that would be challenging, because its teams are quite varied in character. The business is thinking about how it facilitates an effective culture in each department. The company's story helps it in the recruitment of talent. When it comes to retention, the aim is to equip leaders to be more supportive and empathetic in relation to their teams. This needs to be embedded into the appraisal and development systems for all staff. Mike is proud of what Kitlocker's teams have achieved, rather than what he has achieved (and there's still plenty more to do). The company hasn't made any “cataclysmic” mistakes, but it's made many smaller mistakes and has learnt from them. One of Mike's inspirations in starting the company was Jagged Globe, a company that lead climbing and mountaineering expeditions. They gave a two-hour talk to Mike's Business Studies course on what the business does and their experiences as an SME. When Tom Ward said “Let's do this” Mike cast his mind back to that presentation, which he felt was “a really cool journey.” Mike's book recommendations are “Creativity Inc” by Catmull and Wallace, which is about managing creativity at Pixar, and “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. Mike is a fan of “The High Performance Podcast.” A growing business and a young family tend to crowd out Mike's self-care regime, but he has become more aware of the importance of it as he has grown older. He has been working at his exercise regime, but also self-development, and “being mindful of being mindful.” His advice to his 20-year old self would be “Don't be so insular.” Paying more attention to other companies and the external environment generally would have helped Kitlocker to see the bigger picture. Whether it be a kerrang, a chop, a blistering solo, some finger picking or a subtle flange, the electric guitar is one of the defining sounds of the 20th century. Without it – and its constant companion, the amplifier - popular culture would be unrecognisable today: no big gigs, no stadium concerts. And almost certainly no rock music. But why was it needed and how was it created? Who were the pioneers of the technology and who were the early-adopting exponents? Rajan Datar and his three guest experts delve into the roots of this iconic instrument. Monica Smith is Head of Exhibitions and Interpretation for the Smithsonian's Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. Among the many projects she has curated at the museum is From Frying Pan to Flying V: The Rise of the Electric Guitar. Paul Atkinson is professor of Design and Design History at Sheffield Hallam university and the author of Amplified: A Design History of the Electric Guitar. Facebook just imposed a two-year ban on Donald Trump for inciting the Jan 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. I talked to Nick Clegg, VP for Global Affairs and Communications at Facebook, about the decision - and how the company will handle public figures on the platform from now on. We also discuss the challenges of striking a balance between free speech and protection from harm; the mistake I think the company made in banning some content about the possible origins of COVID-19; how “frothy techno-utopianism” has curdled into a form of “techno-pessimism”; the choice between open and closed politics; the paternalism implicit in many critiques of social media; the urgent need for government regulation; how the company's Oversight Board could be an embryonic regulator for the industry as whole; how JS Mill got it right about when to curb speech that could lead to violence; elitism in politics; why he's really not an aristocrat; the pros and cons of life in California; and much more.  Nick Clegg Nick has been Vice‑President for Global Affairs and Communications at Facebook since 2018, having previously served as Deputy Prime Minister of the UK from 2010 to 2015, as Leader of the Liberal Democrat party from 2007 to 2015, as Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Hallam from 2005 to 2017, and as a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004. He was appointed a Knight Bachelor 2018 for political and public service. Fun fact: he used to fact-check Christopher Hitchens at The Nation. More Clegg  Read his important Medium piece from March 31st: You and the Algorithm: It Takes Two to Tango Here's an opinion piece in which he calls for more regulation: Facebook's Nick Clegg calls for bipartisan approach to break the deadlock on internet regulation A good interview here with the Decoder podcast, Facebook's VP of Global Affairs doesn't think the platform is polarizing In October 2017, Nick wrote How To Stop Brexit (And Make Britain Great Again) Also mentioned This line was published in the New York Post: “What was the point of the American Revolution if some aristocratic British nerd can decide which Americans get to speak?”  Nick referred to Facebook's Community Standards (just updated), which define hate speech and other rules of content on the platform. We talked a lot about Facebook's Oversight Board. In its Charter, the purpose of the board is described as being “to protect free expression by making principled, independent decisions about important pieces of content and by issuing policy advisory opinions on Facebook's content policies.”  After Facebook banned Trump indefinitely, the Oversight Board was critical: here is the  case report in which they wrote, “In applying a vague, standardless penalty and then referring this case to the Board to resolve, Facebook seeks to avoid its responsibilities. The Board declines Facebook's request and insists that Facebook apply and justify a defined penalty.” Nick released a statement in response to this news. I referred to the UK's Social Mobility Commission More details on the recent reversal of the decision to ban content suggesting that Covid could be man-made Mark Zuckerburg said in a speech at Georgetown in 2019: “I'm proud that our values at Facebook are inspired by the American tradition, which is more supportive of free expression than anywhere else.” Additionally, in May 2020, he said Facebook should not act as an “arbiter of truth”  I referenced this passage from On Liberty (Ch III): “An opinion that corn-dealers are starvers of the poor, or that private property is robbery, ought to be unmolested when simply circulated through the press, but may justly incur punishment when delivered orally to an excited mob assembled before the house of a corn-dealer, or when handed about among the same mob in the form of a placard.”  The Dialogues Team Creator: Richard Reeves Research: Ashleigh Maciolek Artwork: George Vaughan Thomas Tech Support: Cameron Hauver-Reeves Music: "Remember" by Bencoolen (thanks for the permission, guys!)

Professor David Clutterbuck is a scion in the field of coaching, mentoring, team coaching and research. He is one of Europe's most prolific and well-known management writers and thinkers. He has written in excess of 70+ books and numerous articles and blogs. He is the co-founder of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and is now a lifetime ambassador of the association. He is a visiting professor of the faculty of coaching and mentoring at Henley Business School, Sheffield Hallam, Oxford Brookes and York St. Johns Universities. I was delighted to have the opportunity to speak with him today and I hope you enjoy this episode on the Game of Teams Podcast series.   This particular episode with Professor David Clutterbuck illuminates the systemic nature of teams and how teams are part of a nested system. The terrain is complex, often messy and fraught with issues like a team's history, unspoken expectations, power dynamics, team dynamics and competing priorities and often a misguided sense of why the team is a team. Professor David Clutterbuck shared many vignettes, ideas for engagement, a framework called Perill and his explanation of a powerful question hidden in an acronym called Prairie. David spoke to his passion for teams because they are so complex and replete with learning and also his passion for writing. He has just written a new book adding to his portfolio of 70+ books called A Practitioners Handbook of Team Coaching, which is launching in the last week of April. A must read for any team Leader/member/coach or practitioner wishing to support teams be great. Noteworthy points of discussion Stand-up comedy was by far the most scary thing David has every tried but he recognises that laughter is a huge remedy and can be helpful in providing the “fizz” and “buzz” on teams He often asks of teams to tell him the most ridiculous positive thing that happened recently to connect people with their humanness and to improve the quality of conversations. Important to see teams as a part of an ecosystem and to appreciate the complexity of the system of which teams are apart Teams need to understand their history to know their future Psychological safety is very closely linked to high performance David Clutterbuck advises more time spent in upfront preparation and getting to know the team than in actual team coaching. Really important to appreciate the complexity of teams/the dynamics of interrelations not just within the team but also with their interfaces. Many reasons to engage in team coaching. Conflict, A new Leader, Project teams needing to move faster and be a real team, working out interdependencies, all kinds of transitions, learning skills/process management and how to collaborate or dialogue effectively together. Important too to get clear agreements between all parties to a team coaching engagement to understand expectations Fundamental role of Team Coach is to be redundant over time, to get to a place where the team has absorbed the coaching process. Learning is a critical dimension for teams. Top teams must be able to answer the question “Is this team adapting, evolving and changing at pace ahead of or at least abreast of pace of change around them?” A team must work with a team development plan. What is the learning the team must achieve together to cope with their environment and to get at the performance required. David Clutterbuck shared his PERILL Framework for teams. P stands for Purpose and Motivation, E stands for external relations and processes, R stands for relations, I stands for internal processes like decision making, L stands for learning and L stands for Leadership not the person but the 15 or so functions a leader needs to negotiate with the team to distribute effectively. This model is inherently the first Complex Adaptive Systems thinking framework for teams. Too often teams reach for the simple solution but David Clutterbuck explained the peril of this way of simplistic thinking. Teams needs to understand their system sufficiently well to put in place solutions and ways of working that are sustainable The simple question “who are your stakeholders” is often a mystery to many teams Other similarly provocative but helpful questions include “what is the unique contribution this team can make?” and “who would care if you were not hear?” David explained his formula for powerful questions housed in the acronym Prairie. P is personal, R is resonating, A is acute, R is reverberating, I is innocent and E is explicit. The key is to ask short/sweet questions that are to the point with emotional impact. David Clutterbuck spoke about endings in a team coaching and more specifically about his process with teams. David reminded me that the team has to be responsible for their process.  He often asks and repeatedly asks two questions. 1. What is going on in this team right now and 2. What would you collectively like to do about it? He ends when teams have absorbed the habit of coaching.   Resources: the following include the resources we alluded to over the course of our conversation Clutterbuck, D. Episode 14 of the Sheffield Digital Podcast is ready for you. It’s a good one, as we interviewed two of the candidates in the upcoming Sheffield City Region mayoral election: Hannah Kitching of the Liberal Democrats and Rob Murphy from The Green Party. We asked them about their plans for the region and, in particular, what they saw for the digital sector in the future. I think you’ll find it an interesting listen and thank you to those of you who sent us questions beforehand. I hope we covered most of your suggestions. It’s worth mentioning that we did ask all four candidates from the major parties. Conservative, Ian Walker, couldn’t make the show, but did record a short response to one of our key questions separately. That follows the conversation with Hannah and Rob. And Labour’s Dan Jarvis declines to come on the podcast, but did take part in a roundtable earlier in the week. Both Chris and Mel were at that meeting and offer their thoughts on what he said in this episode too. After all that, we go through the usual new and events from around Sheffield’s digital community. In particular, Chris offers more detail on the Urban Connected Communities 5G bid following the interview I did with Mark Gannon. I hope you enjoy this rather unique episode and, as always, do get in touch to let us know what you think. Now with chapters! My guest in this special episode of the podcast “Leadership is the Competitive Advantage” is Professor David Clutterbuck. David is one of the international pioneers of coaching and mentoring. He brought the concept of structured mentoring programmes to Europe in the early 1980s and, with David Megginson, is a co-founder of the European Mentoring & Coaching Council, for which he is now a Lifetime Ambassador. Of his 70+ books to date, more than a third are in the field of coaching and mentoring. Currently he is a visiting professor in the coaching and mentoring faculties of Oxford Brookes and Sheffield Hallam. He has a post-graduate certificate in coach supervision and he is an external examiner at both Ashridge Business School and Cork University. David has also set up The David Clutterbuck Partnership together with a pool of highly experienced experts in coaching and mentoring. He works with individuals, teams and organisations to help them have the meaningful conversations they need, to bring about significant, positive change. In this special conversation David exudes an immense knowledge of the subject and experience working with hundreds of mentees. This is a real gem. “One of the fundamental leadership traits to develop in ourselves is ethicality, including ethical decision-making. Coaches that I advise around the world frequently are finding that one of the biggest issues that their clients face is inner conflict — having to do things that they actually do not think are right and they would not do in another context. But they might get acclimatised to do these sorts of things in the organisational culture they are immersed in. We know that unethical decisions often happen because people are surrounded by figures and things that make them think ruthlessly rather than humanely. And then suddenly something makes them realise that there is this dissonance between their life at work and life outside, and it genuinely worries them. You need to be curious enough about your own thinking patterns to recognise when you are doing things unethically. Whenever you find yourself in the challenging position as a leader, ask yourself this ethical question: how would I feel about the way that I am approaching this particular issue if we were doing it in public, transparently? Another question to ask is: which of my values is most important here? You probably are facing values conflict — so which value is the most important one here and why? And then you could have lots of other questions like: will I like myself more or less at the end of this? Or, will I respect myself more or less at the end of this? Those are just some of the questions we can ask ourselves as leaders when dealing with difficult matters. They are great in stopping us for a moment, allowing us to take a step back in order to get absolutely clear about what am I doing here and why I am doing this? Who am I doing it for? This is essential inner dialogue which helps to create more ethical leadership practices.” — David Clutterbuck Listen and enjoy!

He then went on to work in the Dearne Valley on behalf of the local LEP, developing the low carbon economy. The interview was the third of a series of interviews I conducted with prospective Members of Parliament, uncovering “the person behind the politics” and asking what policies they would like to introduce to support businesses and social enterprises.[On 6  February 2015 the Conservative Party candidate, Ian Walker, was on the show, and on 13 February the Green Party candidate, Peter Garbutt took part. Links to their interviews are below.]Why are the interviews in this format?Political interviews are frequently conducted in what could be termed the Paxmanian style – an interrogatory approach (more about this here). And there's a time, place and value in this. But radio seldom has the time for long-form political interviews. As a radio presenter, and a resident of Sheffield Hallam, I wanted these interviewees to open up and, in their own words, to explain something of their experience, particularly in working in business and social enterprise.Listen to the other Person behind the Politics interviews:Ian Walker (Conservative Party candidate for Sheffield Hallam)Peter Garbutt (Green Party candidate for Sheffield Hallam)(I invited Nick Clegg to be interviewed for this series, emailing and calling his office and his team several times; and suggested the Liberal Democrats could send an alternative interviewee if necessary – to date, there's been no reply. The Closer! pilot is a new educational podcasting initiative being run at Sheffield Hallam. It will run in the 2007-08 academic year and will evaluate the Podcast LX Building Block in Blackboard. The pilot will be supported by Academic Innovation in the Learning and Teaching Institute and e-Learning support teams in the faculties. Podcasting, audio and video are relatively new media and Academic Innovation are particularly interested in working with people who are interested in taking the opportunity to introduce innovation into their own practice. The pilot seeks to encourage ideas that introduce either new voices or new ways of sharing voices in the learning environment. The pilot is called Closer! because one important area for innovation is how the learning community can be brought closer together through the use of audio. Here are the 10 points I propose in the recording that will help podcast designers to create a good educational experience with podcasting: 1. Relevance is clear to the students 2. Recording quality is adequate and represents the significance of the podcast to the course 3. Embedded amongst, and integrated with, other course material appropriately 4. It informs or leads to other learning activity 5. Engaging format appropriate to the audio medium 6. It does not create a burden on the students (time, access, technology) 7. It does not create a burden on the academic (production time, technology) 8. Academically rigorous (ethically and legally appropriate, participants consent, basis of claims to knowledge are clear) 9. It does not exclude some students 10. It connects to related information through its 'show notes' . Many students however don't seem to engage with the university Careers team. They are preoccupied with studying for the exams. Before they know it they've graduated and not able to make the most of their qualifications.
