Fighting for LGBTQ+ rights in the Caribbean has been difficult, but the winds of progress are blowing strong in Saint Lucia. ECADE, the Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality, just won its fourth court victory since 2022 over long prison sentences for same-sex intimacy. Executive Director Kenita Placide talks about the legal tempest sweeping across the islands (interviewed by David Hunt). And in NewsWrap: the early retirement benefits transgender U.S. Air Force personnel with 15 to 18 years of service were promised for voluntarily agreeing to leave the military have been withdrawn, a majority of people in China support LGBTQ rights according to a new study released by The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, pediatric gender affirming healthcare will be illegal in New Hampshire under a law signed by Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte, Massachusetts' existing protections for transgender and reproductive healthcare are enhanced under legislation signed by lesbian Democratic Governor Maura Healey, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals supports the denial of a preliminary injunction to prevent Oklahoma's ban on pediatric gender-affirming healthcare from being enforced while its constitutionality is litigated, Bishop of Monmouth Cherry Vann is voted the Church in Wales' first female and first out Archbishop, and more international LGBTQ+ news reported this week by Nathalie Munoz and Allan Tijamo (produced by Brian DeShazor). Ingrid hails from the tiny island nation of Saint Lucia, a lushCaribbean island known for its volcanic peaks, vibrant Creole culture, and status as the only country named after a woman. With a population of around 180,000, Saint Lucia blends African, French, and British influences, and though its official language is English, many speak Saint Lucian Creole.Ingrid trained as a physician in Cuba on a Saint Luciangovernment scholarship, worked in paediatrics, and later took on various public health roles across the Caribbean. She made a big move to study Master's degree in Adelaide, where she met herpartner—but it was the appeal of small-city life that drew her to Hobart for her Ph.D.Now based at the Menzies Institute, she's deep into healtheconomics research and has found a second home in Tasmania—one that, surprisingly, shares much with her island roots.

A hot topic right now is the ethics of AI generated images and audio. What these programs are able to mimic can be scarily accurate. But this type of trickery has been going on for a long time…by spirits. People all over the world have been reporting seeing or hearing family or friends in places they actually weren't. Spirits have already been doing what we fear AI will do in the future. So for this week's bonus episode, I wanted to share true stories from real people who have been targets of a spirit mimicking someone they knew, just to show you how common this phenomenon is. [This episode originally aired on July 9, 2024] Ch 1: The Wolf, submitted by Kenzi. A community in St Lucia is haunted by a mysterious wolf. Ch 2: Second Dad, submitted by Chloe. A girl thought she was being tucked into bed by her father. Ch 3: It keeps imitating my family, submitted by Dan G. A kid witnessed an entity mimic the members of his family. Ch 4: The Tah-tah-kle-ahs, submitted by Squeam. A person had a close call with shapeshifting creatures at camp. Don't forget to vote in the poll which story you think was recorded with AI! Anthropologist Dimitris Xygalatas said in his book, Rituals: How Seemingly Senseless Acts Make Life Worth Living, that rituals often have no physical result when performed. Instead, rituals are symbolic, and perform a very essential function in the roles of community building, cooperation, and trust. In this Nordic on Tap episode, we delve into the Saint Lucia ritual, which coincides with the old winter solstice date (Dec 13th) on the Julian calendar. What happens during the St. Lucia ritual? Who participates? Traditionally in Sweden, Lucia was depicted as a blue-eyed, blonde girl with fair skin. However, in modern times, as the population becomes more diverse, the St. Lucia ritual has evolved to reflect a broader range of backgrounds, promoting greater inclusivity. This highlights how traditions can evolve to reflect societal changes while still maintaining their cultural significance. Join me as we try to make sense of this with Stina Cowan, the Cultural Director at the Swedish Club Northwest, in Seattle, Washington USA. We also listen to 3 traditional and lovely Lucia Day songs associated with the ritual. See extras and links on our website episode page on Nordic on Tap.

In this episode, Mark Crego and Terri Petersen explore the universal themes of light and fire as celebrated across diverse cultural, religious, and spiritual traditions. From the twinkling Christmas lights of Christianity to the lamps of Diwali in Hinduism, the menorah of Hanukkah in Judaism, and the kinara of Kwanzaa, light has long symbolized hope, renewal, and the triumph of good over adversity. We delve into how these traditions connect humanity to something greater—be it divine presence, communal unity, or the rhythm of the cosmos. Their conversation spans light and darkness throughout religious and cultural traditions, finding balance between them. Through personal reflections and a deep dive into these global traditions, they uncover shared truths: light as a source of inspiration, fire as a force of transformation, and both as symbols of connection and renewal. Yet, they also address concerns, such as the risks of dualism that pits light against darkness and the potential for hierarchical domination when institutions claim ownership of light. Closing with the warmth of Christmas, they tie these themes together, inviting listeners to embrace light—not to dominate darkness but to foster balance, understanding, and love. This holiday season, let the light you share illuminate not just your home but the lives of those around you!

So for this week's episode, I wanted to share true stories from real people who have been targets of a spirit mimicking someone they knew, just to show you how common this phenomenon is. First, I tell the tale of a community in St Lucia haunted by a mysterious wolf. Then, I narrate the account of a girl who thought she was being tucked into bed by her father. Next, I recall the times a kid witnessed an entity mimic the members of his family. And finally, I read the experience of a person who had a close call with shapeshifting creatures at camp. Ch 1: The Wolf, submitted by Kenzi Ch 2: Second Dad, submitted by Chloe Ch 3: It keeps imitating my family, submitted by Dan G Ch 4: The Tah-tah-kle-ahs, submitted by Squeam Submit your own stories to story@storieswithsapphire.com
