Hello Rank Squad! There's a few big managerial vacancies opening up this summer - Barcelona and Liverpool in particular - and there's also signs that there could be openings at Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Juventus and more. So we decided to take a look at five managers who have had impressive campaigns, and who might be on the wishlists of a few of Europe's giants - Sebastian Hoeneß at VfB Stuttgart, Thiago Motta at Bologna, Michel at Girona, Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP, and Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverksen - to see how they've become so in-demand, and which potential destinations are suitable for what they're trying to do. Before that, there's Things We Love, where Dean discusses this weekend's game between Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, whilst Jack waxes lyrical about the joy of AFCON 2023 and the narrative arc of Côte D'Ivoire's Zombie Elephants campaign, where they came back from the brink to be crowned Champions of Africa. And in Guru Wisdom, Dean ruminates on a tweet he saw recently which has been stuck in his brain, examining the potential for a TV series that puts an internet theory to the test. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

pWotD Episode 2472: Africa Cup of Nations Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 169,381 views on Wednesday, 7 February 2024 our article of the day is Africa Cup of Nations. The Africa Cup of Nations (French: Coupe d'Afrique des Nations), sometimes referred to as the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship reasons, or simply AFCON or CAN, is the main international men's association football competition in Africa. It is sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and was first held in 1957. Since 1968, it has been held every two years, switching to odd-numbered years in 2013.In the first tournament in 1957, there were only three participating nations: Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. South Africa was originally scheduled to join, but was disqualified due to the apartheid policies of the government then in power. Since then, the tournament has expanded greatly, making it necessary to hold a qualifying tournament. The number of participants in the final tournament reached 16 in 1998 (16 teams were to compete in 1996, but Nigeria withdrew, reducing the field to 15, and the same happened with Togo's withdrawal in 2010), and until 2017, the format had been unchanged, with the 16 teams being drawn into four groups of four teams each, with the top two teams of each group advancing to a "knock-out" stage. On 20 July 2017, the Africa Cup of Nations was moved from January to June and expanded from 16 to 24 teams. Egypt is the most successful nation in the cup's history, winning the tournament seven times. Three trophies have been awarded during the tournament's history, with Cameroon five times and Ghana four times. The current trophy was first awarded in 2002. Egypt won an unprecedented three consecutive titles in 2006, 2008, and 2010. In 2013, the tournament format was switched to being held in odd-numbered years so as not to interfere with the FIFA World Cup. Senegal are the tournament's current champions, having beaten Egypt on penalties in the 2021 final. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:05 UTC on Thursday, 8 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Africa Cup of Nations on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kendra Neural.

pWotD Episode 2458: 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 202,858 views on Wednesday, 24 January 2024 our article of the day is 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, known in short as the 2023 AFCON or CAN 2023 and for sponsorship purposes as the TotalEnergies 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is the ongoing 34th edition of the biennial African association football tournament organised by Confederation of African Football. It is hosted by Ivory Coast, the second time it has done so having hosted the 1984 tournament. This edition of the tournament was initially planned to take place in summer 2023, making it the third since 2019 to take place during the Northern Hemisphere's summer, in order to reduce scheduling conflicts with European club teams and competitions. However in July 2022 it was postponed by CAF to 13 January – 11 February 2024 due to the concerns about the summer weather in Ivory Coast. The competition retained the original name for sponsorship purposes. This followed the 2021 edition in Cameroon also being moved to the Northern Hemisphere's winter season for similar reasons. Senegal are the defending champions. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:36 UTC on Thursday, 25 January 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.
Bafana Bafana, who started on the wrong foot after losing to Mali in their opening match at the Africa Cup of Nations, are back in action today when they face Namibia at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Ivory Coast. Coach Hugo Broos' charges lost 2 nil to Mali on Tuesday. The Namibians go into this game on a high after beating Tunisa 1-0 also on Tuesday. Although many say today's match is a must win for Bafana if they are to keep the dream alive, a draw can still give Bafana a chance of making the last 16. They will have to beat Tunisia in their final Group E match. We spoke to Mathews Mpete, SABC Sports Analyst
