Wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell admits the allure of another World Test Championship final is lingering in the thoughts of the Black Caps ahead of their opening test against England starting tomorrow in Christchurch. A 3-nil whitewash of the visitors - backing up their series sweep in India - would give New Zealand the best possible chance of making the final, if other results go their way. Dean Blundell joins Zev Shalev for the third installment of Narativ Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a list of members of Parliament who are either actively engaged with or at high risk of foreign interference, putting Parliament Hill in crisis. The bombshell disclosure came at Canada's Foreign Interference Inquiry, during which Trudeau expressed frustration at Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre's continued refusal to receive top-secret security briefings about the threat. I have the names of a number of parliamentarians, former parliamentarians, and/or candidates in the Conservative Party of Canada, who are engaged or at high risk of, or for whom there is clear intelligence around foreign interference," PM Justin Trudeau under oath. The Prime Minister emphasized that his government has directed CSIS to inform the Conservative Party leader about these security risks, but Poilievre's refusal to receive classified briefings means "nobody in his party, nobody in a position of power knows the names of these individuals and can take appropriate action." Indian Government's Deep Infiltration Exposed The revelations come amid mounting evidence of Indian government interference in Canadian politics. The RCMP has uncovered evidence linking Indian government agents to a campaign of violence, including homicides, coercion, and extortion on Canadian soil. In a dramatic development, Trudeau confirmed he confronted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about these allegations during what he described as a "very uncomfortable" conversation at the G20 summit. The Prime Minister disclosed that Indian diplomats and consular officials in Canada had allegedly leveraged their positions to engage in clandestine intelligence-gathering activities. Conservative Party Operative Under Investigation Adding to the growing scandal, recent reports indicate that Arpan Khanna, who served as Pierre Poilievre's Ontario co-chair during his successful leadership campaign, is under investigation by CSIS for potentially receiving support from the Indian government. Khanna's nomination in the Oxford riding has come under particular scrutiny. Two senior riding officials resigned in protest, claiming the party leadership "hijacked" the process to favor Khanna. About Dean Blundell Dean Blundell, a legendary figure in Canadian broadcasting who hosted the boundary-pushing morning show on Toronto's 102.1 The Edge (2001-2014) and later Fan 590, has transformed from self-described "shock jock" to one of Canada's most important investigative voices through his Dean Blundell Show podcast and Crier Media empire. Under the Crier Media banner, which operates dozens of podcasts and works with a collective of reporters, journalists, and lawyers while maintaining complete independence by refusing government funding, Blundell has emerged as a leading investigator of foreign interference in Canadian politics, breaking significant stories about threats to democracy that mainstream media outlets often hesitate to cover, including early reporting on Pierre Poilievre's refusal to obtain national security clearance and exposing connections between Canadian conservative movements and international actors.

In the latest episode of Narativ, host Zev Shalev and guest Dean Blundell deliver a chilling wake-up call to Canadians about the dire state of their democracy. The conversation paints a disturbing picture of a nation teetering on the edge of autocracy, with foreign interference and media corruption threatening to unravel the very fabric of Canadian society. Blundell doesn't mince words as he exposes the rot at the core of Canada's media landscape. He reveals how outlets like Rebel News operate as little more than paid advocacy groups, pushing propaganda that aligns with Russian interests and far-right ideologies. The recent Supreme Court ruling confirming Rebel News produces less than 1% of actual news content is just the tip of the iceberg. But the threat goes beyond biased media. The episode uncovers the alarming influence of foreign actors, particularly Russia, in Canadian politics. From co-opting influential individuals to running sophisticated disinformation campaigns, these efforts aim to polarize public opinion and undermine trust in democratic institutions. Even more shocking is the revelation that Canadian taxpayer money has been used to fund Russian propaganda films. The urgency of the situation becomes clear as Shalev and Blundell discuss the upcoming election. They warn that Canadians face a stark choice between character and corruption, with the very soul of the nation hanging in the balance. The potential for a Pierre Poilievre-led government, coupled with the possibility of a Trump presidency in the US, paints a grim picture for North American democracy. Time is running out for Canadians to wake up to these threats. This episode of Narativ serves as a crucial call to action, urging citizens to engage critically with the information they consume and to fight for the preservation of their democratic values. The future of Canada hangs in the balance, and every voice matters in this battle against creeping authoritarianism.

This week's guest on the Mixtape with Scott is famed labor economist, Richard Blundell, the David Ricardo Professor of Political Economy at the University of College at London. Dr. Blundell's accolades are extensive: a Fellow of the Econometric Association, Fell of the American Academy of Arts and Science, former President of SOLE, of the Royal economic Society, recipient of the 2000 Frisch Prize, the 2020 Jacob Mincer Prize in Labor Economics, and on and on. You can find more information about his background here at this short biography. But ironically, it was for a different reason that I wanted to reach out to him. I was interested in reaching out to Dr. Blundell because of some research I had been doing on the history of difference-in-differences and throughout the 1990s, I kept coming back to him. He had several things he wrote in the 1990s that left me with the distinct impression that he was attempting to educate others about the bridging of causal inference and natural experiment methodologies, so I was just curious to learn more about him. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did! Thank you again for all your support! Scott's Substack is a reader-supported publication. Resources: Oika Oika Spain - Fred Adam Incomprehensible Certainty: Metaphysics and Hermeneutics of the Image - Thomas Pfau Quotes: "Extended naturalism is committed to all of that. There's a difference between knowledge and grasping the significance of the knowledge, especially the significance for personal transformation. When one grasps that significance so that one overcomes ways in which one is self-deceptive, disconnected from reality so that one understands reality in a way that transforms one. That's a good account of what wisdom is." - Dr. John Vervaeke “I call it the process of acquaintance. I aspectualize my understanding of that place. I use so many different media and techniques—different muscle memories, different colors, sensory things, let as much in as possible, but also let myself in. This is, in fact, me trying to understand myself at a particular time and place.” - Rite LeDuc “The garden provides a place for the two cultures of the academy—science and humanity—to come together in a mutually inspiring dialectical dance.” - Gregg Henriques Timecodes: [00:00:00] Dr. John Vervaeke introduces the episode and highlights the interconnectivity of the Cognitive Science series and guests. He presents the ongoing Oika framework discussion. [00:09:52] Gregg Henriques emphasizes the need to clarify worldviews and values. He speaks about embodying and living these values in social practices. [00:12:20] Rita Leduc talks about stepping out of comfort zones, embracing vulnerability, and building trust. She emphasizes the experiential mode for creatives. [00:19:00] Rita explains her artistic process, describing it as a process of acquaintance where she attempts to understand a place, using different media and techniques to aspectualize her understanding. [00:24:16] Dr. Vervaeke discusses the coherency of different aspects, likening them to melody notes rather than cacophony. [00:28:14] The discussion turns towards the aspectualization of dialogically enhancing understanding of a place. Dr. Rich Blundell shares an anecdote about filming a documentary, highlighting the immersive and transformative nature of the creative process. [00:32:52] Dr. Vervaeke explores mental framing, linking it to art creation. He draws parallels to the Eastern Orthodox tradition of icon carving. [00:34:53] Rita Leduc explains the idea of niche construction in her practice, showcasing her unique artistic philosophy. [00:41:30] Dr. Vervaeke seeks further explanation of niche construction in Rita's art. Dr. Rich Blundell explains how Rita's process of creating art involves letting the world shape her and creating an artifact that becomes part of the world. [00:47:06] Dr. John Vervaeke draws a connection to wisdom and the process of internalizing the world and its spiritual intelligence. Leduc connects her feelings and experiences in the woods to a cosmic story. She describes how this connection affirms her creativity. [00:49:23] Dr. Rich Blundell discusses the concept of Eidos and how it relates to the process of life emerging from non-life. [00:51:55] Gregg Henriques talks about the reawakening of intimacy across various aspects of life. Dr. Vervaeke prompts Henriques to elaborate on the concept of intimacy, emphasizing its recovery in modern society. [01:06:02] Dr. Blundell shares various projects, including European collaborations and economic models. He discusses the importance of recoupling economic wealth and ecological health, highlighting how artists can contribute to this through their unique practices. [01:10:44] Discussion about how art is now back in service of the sacred, overturning the modern and postmodern thrust in art, and how the art around the sacred predates agriculture and is probably the precursor to civilization, challenging certain reductionist accounts of human behavior. [01:17:20] - Gregg Henriques underscores the significance of Oika and its connection to art. He reflects on his own journey and the importance of cognitive science and psychology in filling explanatory gaps, and he emphasizes the need to appreciate our natural intelligence as we transition into the artificial world.

In this episode, I had a lovely chat with Gina Blundell about the amazing work she is doing to help women move forward after long-term abusive marriages. She shared with me her story of leaving her narcissistic ex-husband after nearly 30 years of marriage and how she turned her pain into passion to help others move forward. Gina Blundell is a coach that helps women who are transitioning through a divorce and feel trapped and stuck in their marriage as they cannot see a way forward. She does this by showing them how to take the first steps to an empowered life so that they can thrive independently both emotionally and financially by letting go of the past and taking control by thriving in the next chapter of their lives! Gina comes from a place of honesty and put herself in their shoes as much as possible. Taking her clients from a place of feeling stuck to coming unstuck and moving presently forward each day with whatever they are dealing with. Having come out of a narcissistic marriage after over 30 years Gina wants to help those that feel they do not have a choice but to stay. She tells all those she meets. "You definitely don't have to stay and I will show you a way that will help you stay grounded and present in your day as much as possible." Today is our seventh episode in the "First Hire" series where we've so far covered making first hires in marketing, finance, operations, and retail & foodservice sales, and we've talked with one of our community brands, Sweet Nothings, about making their first few hires. Culture comes up some in those conversations, but I wanted to dedicate an entire episode to culture. We're joined today by expert Jennifer Yepez-Blundell, owner of Merida Consulting, and our former Startup CPG Podcast host, to guide us in this conversation, and I'm so excited to share Jennifer's wisdom with you and have her on the other side of the mic. When I was the first marketing and operations hire at a CPG startup brand, I had big dreams about building a culture different than those I had experienced in the corporate world. Over the next 2 years and growing to 30 employees, I wish I could have had someone like Jennifer guide that startup from the beginning. Within our community of emerging brands are tomorrow's next household brand names. Can you imagine if the Frito Lay's and Coca-Cola's of the world had these conversations from day one? There's an incredible opportunity to make change through building not only a mission-driven product, but also through the mission-driven team of humans behind those products. Listen in as Jennifer shares about: - How to define culture and key terms - Why culture is important and how the conversations around workplace culture have shifted - Biggest mistakes founders make - The process of developing values and how an outside expert can help - How culture expands beyond your team members to your customers and external partners - And more! And stay tuned at the end for a special mini interview with Startup CPG Shelfie Award winner, Tiny Sprouts (at 34:30). After recording this interview at the end of last year, I got to meet Tina and Kim in person at Expo West and try the product, which was amazing. And they had their Shelfie Award proudly displayed at their booth.

It's not about doing “things,” but changing our thoughts and perspective. “We need to change the way in which we identify the lands that we live on, the air that we breathe, the planet that we inhabit. Then those other problems not only solve themselves, they become non-problems. All we have to do is fall back in love with the earth that has loved us."We sat down for a chat about ecological intelligence, the cosmos, our connectivity to nature, the dynamic between science and spirituality & religion (you might be surprised at what he has to say, being a scientist.), non-duality, climate change (you might be surprised by his thoughts on this as well), we talked about Oika, which is a word he coined and what that means and the power of artists to help change the world.Dr. Rich Blundell is an ecologist working at the interface of art, science, nature and culture. His research examines how transformation happens across the scales of person, place and planet. As a cultural communicator, Rich tells a scientific story of the universe that includes art and human creativity as natural phenomena. Dr. Blundell's research and work has received numerous grants and awards including, The National Science Foundation grant for Science Out There, the Michael Brinkman Award, and The Deep Time Values video award for An Earth Story. Blundell's creative video work has appeared on PBS, National Geographic and his art has hung in numerous galleries.
