Clyde Best became one of England’s first Black soccer superstars when he played for West Ham United from 1968 to 1976. Best scored 58 goals in his 218 appearances as a striker for West Ham. He later went on to play for the Portland Timbers from 1977 to 1981, helping build the foundation for professional soccer in the U.S. The documentary “Transforming the Beautiful Game: The Clyde Best Story” showcases Best’s life and career, including the racism he had to contend with on and off the pitch. The film will play at the Aladdin Theater on June 4 and 5, followed by a Q&A with Best and other interviewees in the film. Clyde Best joins us for a conversation ahead of those screenings.
The curtain has fallen on a modern top-flight mainstay. After 14 consecutive seasons in the Premier League, West Ham United has suffered a catastrophic relegation to the Championship. It is a sporting and economic disaster that has sent shockwaves far beyond the walls of the London Stadium. In this episode, we dissect the catastrophic numbers, tactical paradoxes, and transfer decisions that doomed the Hammers' campaign: How a leaky backline that conceded 65 goals completely undermined Jarrod Bowen's heroic efforts and 18 direct goal contributions.Breaking down the club's staggering £104.2 million loss, unsustainable wage turnover, and the unique stadium lease costs now hitting London taxpayers.A look at the devastating impact of losing Mohammed Kudus to rivals Tottenham for £55 million, Lucas Paquetá's winter departure, and the impending fire sale of the remaining squad. We also look ahead to the grueling reality of the Championship meat grinder and evaluate whether West Ham has the stomach to fight its way back to the elite. On this week's show, The YP's chief football writer Stuart Rayner joins host Mark Singleton to reflect on the all-Yorkshire Championship play-off final between Hull City and Middlesbrough at Wembley last Saturday – a game that was settled by a late Oli McBurnie goal which took the Tigers back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017.Leeds United lost their final game of the Premier League season when going down 3-0 at West Ham United who, despite the win, were still relegated to the Championship. But the loss does not detract from what has been a positive return to the top-flight for Leeds under Daniel Farke – who was able to keep a promoted side in the division for the first time in his coaching career. The panel reflect on the highs of the 2025-26 campaign for the Whites and what they need to do during the coming summer months to ensure they strengthen their position. What was for some people a ‘controversial' England World Cup squad selection by Thomas Tuchel also comes under the spotlight, as does Oli McBurnie's omission from the Scotland squad despite a memorable season with Hull in the Championship. Anton Stach's failure to make the cut for the Germany squad is also discussed.
The Premier League is finished for the 2025/2026 season. Tottenham Hotspur have held on to their position in the EPL for another season, scraping just by in seventeenth place as West Ham United are subject to relegation for the first time since 2011. Fourteen straight seasons in the top flight sees the London club with a stadium capacity of over sixty thousand pushed down to the EFL Championship. Burno Fernandez notched his 21st assist of the season, making him the all time single season leader in assists; though not without controversy. Finally, Arsenal's season is not yet done as they will face off against French champions PSG in the UEFA Champion's League final on Saturday. Will the Gunners be able to dethrone the holders? Host Ricky Sacks is joined by Compère Richard Cracknell, Actor Darren Hart and Billie T as defeat to Chelsea meant our battle against relegation will go right down to the final day after a 2-1 defeat to at Stamford Bridge means we failed to pick up the point we needed to all but guarantee Premier League safety. Going into the game at Stamford Bridge two points ahead of West Ham United and with a much better goal difference, we knew one draw from our final two matches against Chelsea and Everton would pretty much do the job, we discuss with the guys the phycological pressure going into the final day, playing at home, where we have only won two league games all season. We discuss our concerns of both where the goals are coming from, and the nature of how we are conceding goals from continuous individual errors. The panel also reflect on the bonkers moment towards the end of the game, where Cucurella dragged Micky van de Ven to the ground and was booked. Spurs were stunned not to get a penalty but referee Stuart Attwell claimed to have blown the whistle before Mathys Tel's corner was taken. Liam Delap was then booked for blatant elbow. James Maddison was livid and lambasted the referee immediately after the full time whistle, closely followed by Roberto De Zerbi who also wasn't happy. It lead us into the conversation as to whether we feel Spurs are being refereed differently to other teams this season. We close on Roberto De Zerbi's rallying cry where he stated ‘Sunday is the final for Tottenham. Not Bilbao against Manchester United. The most important game is Sunday. Now we play for something more than a trophy. This is for the pride of the club and its history.' We question whether De Zerbi can pull-off the great escape despite all the imitigating factors he has been up against since the second he accepted the Spurs job. Host Ricky Sacks is joined by Billie T, George Achillea and Ian Lubin as the panel react to West Ham United's defeat to Newcastle United, meaning Tottenham needing just a draw from their final two games to avoid relegation from the Premier League. Spurs are two points above the Hammers and with a far superior goal-difference, are likely to stay up if they as long as they avoid defeat against just one of Chelsea or Everton. We discuss how Roberto De Zerbi has nearly masterminded the great-escape and why Tottenham Hotspur can never, ever afford to be in this position ever again in a severe warning to ENIC and The Lewis Family for the Club is being run both on and off the pitch. The panel discuss comments from former Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld who says it's been ‘painful' watching Tottenham Hotspur's battle to stay in the Premier League, a club that's he says should ‘not be fighting relegation' and would jump at the chance to go back to Spurs in a strategic role. Danny Rohl has confirmed that Rangers will work on re-signing Mikey Moore this summer, we discuss what the future holds for Moore and whether another loan would be beneficial to him at this stage of his development. We finally close on our thoughts going into Chelsea, Spurs have won just one solitary game in the Premier League era at that West London ground. It came in 2018 during the peak Mauricio Pochettino years, with Dele Alli scoring twice after Christian Eriksen's stunner from 25 yards had cancelled out Alvaro Morata's strike. We discuss the fitness of James Maddison, who has recorded five goal involvements in 13 games against Chelsea in the Premier League so he knows how to hurt the Blues. In what will probably amount to another meaningless game, Liverpool will host Chelsea in a match that Chelsea will desperately need to win in order to have even the most slender chances of finishing sixth and potentially finding a back door into the Champions League next season. Should Liverpool win, Chelsea will be doomed to hope for a Europa or Conference league birth for the next campaign. Host Ricky Sacks is joined by Jason McGovern, Darren Hart and Gary Ward as we reflect on Roberto De Zerbi knowing what the Tottenham Hotspur experience is all about after a crazy first week in charge. The Italian only took the helm last week yet within days Spurs fell into the bottom three without a ball being kicked, that was just after losing Mohammed Kudus for the rest of the campaign due to a set-back in his rehabilitation through injury. De Zerbi then lost his first game at Sunderland with Nordi Mukiele's deflected effort deciding the encounter and Cristian Romero injuring medial collateral ligament meaning he will miss the remainder of the season. We discuss where we are in the battle for survival as Spurs remain two points behind in-form West Ham United. Three behind Nottingham Forest. And desperately in need of a league win — something they have not achieved since December. Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero will miss five to eight weeks with a knee injury, meaning he will miss the remainder of the season for Spurs. However, the 27-year-old's World Cup dream very much remains alive, and he will have time to get fit to start for Argentina. We debate if he has already played his last game in a Spurs shirt. We close on being united around the fact that the Brighton home game has become similar to our most recent Premier League home matches, one of the most important in our modern-day history in our battle to retain our Premier League status. Independent Multi-Award Winning Tottenham Hotspur Fan Channel (Podcast) providing instant post-match analysis and previews to every single Spurs match along with a range of former players, managers and special guests. In this episode of The Joy of Football Podcast, Martin Tyler and Neil Barnett dive into a huge range of talking points across the modern game - from title ambition and club standards to refereeing controversy and football's ever-changing rules. The episode kicks off with a passionate debate around Arsenal, questioning whether simply “competing” is enough. Are the Gunners truly building towards titles, or has the mindset shifted towards settling for Champions League places? There's also a deep dive into Chelsea FC, where expectations vs reality come under the spotlight. With reduced wage structures, changing ambitions, and comparisons to previous eras, has Chelsea's standard dropped — and what does success actually look like for the club now? Martin's Letter from the Gantry focuses on a major refereeing controversy involving West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, where a crucial incorrect decision led to a goal. This opens up a wider discussion on VAR, IFAB, and whether football is becoming overcomplicated with constant rule changes and interventions. There's also reaction to a heavy defeat for Chelsea against Manchester City, alongside analysis of refereeing consistency, game management, and how decisions continue to shape results at the highest level. As always, the episode wraps up with Three of the Best, highlighting emerging young talents, including Alex Scott and standout performers across the Premier League. #Arsenal #Chelsea #WestHam #Wolves #ManchesterCity #PremierLeague #VAR #Refereeing #FootballDebate #AlexScott #FootballPodcast #JoyOfFootball

Host Ricky Sacks is joined by Compère Richard Cracknell, Broadcaster Marcus Buckland and Billie T as Roberto de Zerbi's first game in charge ended in defeat at Sunderland as we fell to a seventh loss in eight league games. Appointed two weeks ago following the departure of Igor Tudor, the Italian was unable to change our immediate fortunes as he made his debut as our Head Coach, seeing his new side go down to a narrow 1-0 reverse thanks to a heavily deflected goal from Nordi Mukiele just after the hour mark. We discuss De Zerbi's team selection and tactical decisions taken in the game and what he would have learnt ahead of a reunion against his former side Brighton next week. The panel also debate with only six games remaining and Spurs' Premier League survival hopes no longer in their hands, whether the players can mentally cope under the pressure and drag us out of this relegation battle as we sit, 18th in the table. Two points below West Ham United in 17th and three points below Nottingham Forest in 16th position. All three teams have six games left to play. We also touch-upon the refeering display from Rob Jones as Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro were all cautioned by referee Jones in the first-half, meanwhile Brian Brobbey, who swung an arm in the direction of Pedro Porro during a tussle and pushed Cristian Romero into Antonín Kinský which resulted in the keeper having to wear a head bandage for the remainder of the game and Romero in tears as he came off with a suspected medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury, remained on the field unpunished.
