On May 10, 1981, Montreal Expos right-hander Charlie Lea pitches the first no-hitter in the history of Olympic Stadium. Lea, the first French-born pitcher to hurl a no-hitter, strikes out eight batters and walks four in the second game of a doubleheader, as the Expos beat the San Francisco Giants, 4-0.In 2010 Lea was asked what he remembered about the final out of the game, it ended with a fly ball of the bat of Giants first baseman Enos Cabell. Lea said “It was a slider a little bit away from him,” he went onto say, ” I don't know if it was up or down but he hit it off the end, a little lazy fly ball to center. Dawson really didn't have to move out of his tracks. Andre was a fairly emotionless guy. When he caught it and and immediately threw his arms in the air and started jumping up and down, me seeing his emotion, it was something special.”Only three pitchers tossed no-hitters for the Montreal Expos franchise, Bill Stoneman did it twice in 1969 and 1972, and Dennis Martinez pitched a perfect game in 1991. As the 100-day Olympic Review is underway, Ballymore has become the focal point in the Brisbane 2032 stadium debate. CEO of Queensland Rugby Union, Dave Hanham, told Sam Leckie on Wide World of Sports, "We presented to the 100-day review committee about the legacy that we want to leave with Ballymore." "You're going to create a home for women's rectangular sport, another high-performance centre of excellence, and we're confident if we can come out of this 100-day review maintaining that position as an Olympic venue, that will only bode well." "Our view is there's a need, irrespective of the Olympics, but the Olympics can actually add a little bit more value to it as well," Mr Hanham continued. Former town planner Marian Wheeler told Shane Doherty on 4BC Summer Drive, "If we had an 80,000 capacity stadium, we would have the third largest cricket stadium in the world and we would have the second largest AFL venue in Australia." Whilst Sydney Bledisloe Tests have often been fairly evenly split in terms of support for both the Wallabies and All Blacks, the 31-28 result in that perhaps for the first time in a long time, both set of fans walked away from the Olympic Stadium reasonably satisfied. Valarie Allman is reigning Olympic champion for the women's discus and has also won bronze and silver at the last two editions of the World Championships. She tells The Warm Up Track how she and her coach figured out ‘the master of all puzzles' to win Olympic gold in Tokyo. Valarie explains how, starting out, they sought to break the mould of how previous US throwers had prepared for global championships, and that strategy was to face her main rivals as often as possible on the circuit. But, having succeeded in that, the pandemic then took away that opportunity to compete.Valarie says that actually helped her fall back in love with the sport – all of which set up her Olympic gold medal winning season in 2021. She tells us how it felt silly telling herself she was going to win Olympic gold – but how, after a while, those affirmations began to feel authentic.Young Valarie was a dancer, so what was it like to be around the TV show ‘So You Think You Can Dance' at weekends, and then being back in Middle School during the week? Also find out how the prospect of a spaghetti dinner encouraged her to try out for the discus in High School and what it meant the day she could throw as far as the prairie dog hole on the school field. Plus, how having an older brother helped develop her competitiveness, and which Frank Sinatra song she's really taken to heart.Image: Valarie Allman of Team United States celebrates with her countries flag after winning the gold medal in the Women's Discus Final on day ten of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Olympic Stadium on August 02, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. Pope Francis hosted the inaugural World Children's Day, a Vatican initiative held from May 25 to 26 at Rome's Olympic Stadium and St. Peter's Square. The event drew around 50,000 children spanning more than 100 nationalities and featured conversations between the young participants and Pope Francis. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and actor Roberto Benigni were also in attendance. With the event, the pope hoped to raise awareness about children's plight in war, promote global peace, care for the environment and empower the younger generation.  On the show, producer and guest host Ricardo da Silva, S.J. and veteran Vatican reporter Gerard O'Connell discuss this unique event and the Vatican's ongoing efforts to foster peace and dialogue among warring factions worldwide. Later, Gerry reflects on “20 Days in Mariupol,” the award-winning film he saw at the Vatican. The documentary, screened as part of a special event hosted by the British and Ukrainian embassies to the Holy See, exposes the atrocities committed by Russian forces in Ukraine. It highlights the horrors of war and underscores the crucial role of journalists in uncovering the truth. It's September 24th, 1988 -- a warm, sunny and dry day in the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea. It also happened to be the final of the men's 100 metre sprint to decide the Olympic champion and world's fastest man. The top contenders, Carl Lewis from the United States, and a Canadian sprinter named Ben Johnson, lined up in lanes 3 and 6 respectively in one of the most highly anticipated races of the year. The gun goes off -- and almost immediately Johnson had a step on every other runner, including the defending Olympic gold medalist from the US. By 50 meters it was clear that nobody could keep up with the Canadian runner. As Johnson approached the finish line, he iconically raised his hands in victory, pointing his right index finger to the sky and then to stands toward thousands of screaming fans. With a time of 9.79 seconds, Ben Johnson had completely smashed his own World Record and was now an Olympic champion. Three days later, Johnson was stripped of his gold medal and world record by the International Olympic Committee after he tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing substance stan-o-zolol.   Why am I telling you about an Olympic final that happened over 35 years ago? Well, the events that would transpire after the IOC announced that it would strip Johnson of his gold medal and world record, would send shockwaves through the Canadian sport system – the reverberations of which would be felt in our cultural, political, and social systems as well as our collective memories. Johnson's disqualification spurred something of what sociologists might call a moral panic regarding the unethical grip that had apparently taken hold of Canadian sport – a deviation from the stereotypical perception of Canada as a wholesome, equitable, and polite geopolitical nation. And perhaps most relevant for this talk today, I argue that this was a fundamental precursor to the current moment that we find ourselves in Canadian sport – a moment, as I hope to convince you, that is riddled with harm and abuse. In this episode, Derek walks us through why Canada needs a judicial inquiry into harm and abuse in sport and, more importantly, why that's nowhere near enough to give justice to survivors. If we want to do justice for survivors of harm and abuse in Canadian sport, we need a judicial inquiry. But that's nowhere near enough. We also need to act, and we must act now, to ensure there are effective mechanisms for oversight, accountability, and, perhaps most importantly, reparation for the harms already done and the harms being done literally right now across the country. Anything less is a metaphor for action – it's an obfuscation of the long-history of harm and abuse that we know about in this space, and that we know is only a small snapshot of the true reality of abuse in Canadian sport – and it's a surface level attempt reinforce and replicate a system of sport that inevitably produces and endorses abusive spaces within a project of winning-at-any-cost. For if we continue to allow and obfuscate violent abuse in sport, and sport is supposedly integral to our national identity, one concludes that violent abuse is indeed part of Canada. I don't want sport to be about violent abuse, and surely you don't want Canada to be about violent abuse. So let's do something about it, and let's do something now. We had the pleasure of interviewing Dominique Fils-Aimé over Zoom video!JUNO Award winning artist Dominique Fils-Aimé [FEES-em-AY] recently released her new album, Our Roots Run Deep and shares the cinematic video to her new single “My Mind At Ease”. Our Roots Run Deep is the first statement of a new trilogy from Dominique and follows her award-winning trilogy of Nameless, Stay Tuned! and Three Little Words. This new trilogy will see Dominique look inwards, reflecting on her own emotional and spiritual landscape - her roots. Our Roots Run Deep is out now via Ensoul Records.“My Mind At Ease” is a song that confronts psychological fear. The track works through mental disturbance. Dominique's sensitive voice applies persistent pressure. “Leave me alone bad thoughts” she repeats, “begone”. The ominous quality of the music initially creates a feeling of trepidation. As the song progresses, the moody atmosphere builds up a certain nerve that helps to fuel a breakthrough. Dominique's words and emotion fight back and fear dissipates into “restful dreams” as Dominique's voice rings out “victorious - glorious.” The visually stunning video that accompanies today's release was shot on location at the Olympic Stadium, Montreal and directed by Adrian Villagomez, with Mel Charlot, renowned for her work with Grammy Award Winner, Lizzo, choreographing the piece. While Dominique's last trilogy conceptualized the history of African American music, the approach is more personal for this forthcoming album and trilogy. Speaking on the creation of Our Roots Run Deep, Dominique says, “While the goal remains a quest for universal connection through musical frequencies, this internal journey quickly brought me to the importance of my roots. It sparked a desire to shed light on our intergenerational treasures rather than intergenerational trauma, using these treasures to address and heal trauma. By being more open and vulnerable, I hope to lead by example and contribute to the dismantling of taboos surrounding mental health, taboos that are all still very present today, especially in BIPOC communities.”The album artwork explores Dominique's quest for growth and freedom. In keeping with her first trilogy's use of primary colors for each album artwork, the second trilogy will explore a new color palette resulting from the blend of those primary colors. “Being the fourth color of the rainbow, green is known to be calming, a symbol for new beginnings, nature and growth,” details Dominique.” Green is for the vegetation that inspires me in my songwriting and teaches me to grow everyday. It's like giving myself the green light to let my artistic and emotional freedom bloom, with jazz being my musical vessel.”Dominique's 2018 debut Nameless is now the audiophile's reference recording across the globe. Stay Tuned! won the 2020 JUNO Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year as well as the Félix prize for Best Jazz Album at the 2019 ADISQ Gala, was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and featured among the 19 best Canadian albums of 2019 by CBC. Dominique was also nominated that same year as Radio-Canada's 2019-2020 “Revelation in Jazz”. The final chapter of the trilogy.
