Nine days ago in Frisco Texas an altercation at a track meet shocked the nation. Austin Metcalf was a promising track and field athlete attending a championship competition when he got into a brief altercation with another athlete, Karmelo Anthony, over a tent. According to witnesses, in a matter of moments after the disagreement started, Karmelo took out a knife from his bag and stabbed Austin Metcalf in the heart. Austin died moments later in his twin brother's arms. This tragedy reopened the wound and division that has been present for nearly the entirety of our nation's history. Austin Metcalf is far from the first victim of black on white violence, bringing pressing and relevant questions about law, order, and race to the surface yet again. But as family and community mourn for Austin Metcalf and Karmelo Anthony is being held in jail on a one million dollar bond, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised by the black community for Karmelo Anthony, who they see as a victim in the encounter, despite him confessing to the stabbing. We are at the point where even the unjustified murder of a high schooler cannot be objectively condemned as a terrible tragedy by some sides of the aisle. At a certain point it's time to say the quiet part out loud. Why are Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont the safest states to live in and also, coincidentally, the least diverse? Why are black women more likely to commit murder than white men? And what are the implications of this in relation to what neighborhood you live in, how you protect your family, and even what sports you put your kids in? Sporting KC went out with a whimper as they traveled to Frisco TX on Saturday night to close out a fairly forgettable season against FC Dallas. Much of how the game went was a microcosm of the season as a whole, including giving up a bad goal, making ridiculous mistakes due to poor communication, and Willy Agada being the only one creating chances of any significance in the game. While we may have expected it to be a curtain call for a number of players on the team, most of them didn't even make the trip as they were “injured”. This created a fairly unbalanced lineup that certainly influenced SKC's ability to impact the game in the way they wanted. There has been a lot of talk about the upcoming rebuild this offseason, and the factors that are driving it, being a lack of spending to date, the lack of mentality in the locker room, or the incomplete nature of the roster build. Peter Vermes has finally started to say the rebuild word out loud, as well as making clear commitments on where the club will be looking to spend in the offseason. We'll discuss some of these structural changes that need to be made, and assess what realistic expectations should be had of the club next year as well as in the off-season before competitive games begin again next February. Finally we will spend some time discussing a fascinating discussion David Gass had with Bobby Warshaw around youth development and the implications it has for Sporting KC, as well as the Temwa for MVP discourse, and finish with a quick preview of the MLS playoff race which begins with the Eastern Conference play-in game tonight.
Kuba and Bethany tackle some uncomfortable examples of an employee who felt entitled and was quite verbal with her disappointment over gifts she felt were hers. The examples will definitely make the skin crawl, but these are relatively common examples. It is important to set the stage very clearly with team members regarding bonus plans, which are elective extras for the team. Openly complaining about the rules related to getting a bonus is a clear indication that the team might not be ready for a bonus program. It is also important to clearly set the stage for which gifts delivered to the practice are for the doctor and which are for the team. Dr. Kuba's example gives listeners an uncomfortable example of what can go wrong when a team member does not clearly know the rules related to gifts.
