Podcast by Riveting!
Trade maneuvers made our protected list moot; a successful college draft was marred by a rookie's mistake; and the league released a preliminary 2022 schedule framework. Be sure to check out the Rose City Riveter's raffle to benefit the newly formed NWSLPA National Players Emergency Trust: https://107ist.org/event-4612635
We talk about Mark Parsons' last game as the coach of the Portland Thorns and the leaked news regarding the coach that will replace him. We revisit the question of who knew what when back in 2015 and answer listener questions that lead us to ponder possible team formations.
As the Thorns head into the post season at the top of the league, we are excited about resent good news and worried by the lack of communication between the front office and the fans.
The Portland Thorns win the NWSL Shield! We talk about the last four games; discuss who we would like the Thorns to meet in the semifinal; revisit our expansion draft protected list via a listener question; and anticipate the final game of the regular season.
We talk about the accusations put forth by former Thorns players against a former Thorns head coach as reported in The Athletic by Meg Linehan. We also discuss listener suggestions regarding steps that the Thorns front office can take to prevent future abuse.
Where are our three points? How well are the national team players doing? Who will be protected from the expansion draft? We ponder these and other questions as we enter the international break.
A lot has happened since we last talked just two weeks ago. We cover the fun intermission that was the WICC and the first 2 games of the rest of the regular season. We also address some tough listener questions.
While the international players were at the Olympics the rest of the Thorns go on a 7 game unbeaten streak putting the team on top of the table. The stage is set, but first there is a short tournament to play.
The Thorns continue their unbeaten streak while the national team players are at the Olympics. We also talk about the NWSL Player Association's NoMoreSideHustles campaign and answer listener questions.
Happy to be wrong, we discuss the Thorns' recent 2 game unbeaten streak, examine league wide attendance numbers and answer listener questions.
We review the win against Kansas City and the loss to North Carolina Courage. Looking forward to the next two matches - Thorns vs Racing Louisville at Louisville and Thorns vs Gotham FC at home - we consider the potential impact of positive and negative results on the team.
After two wins, do we know how good the Thorns are? What will the expansion of NWSL into California look like, how will the internationals adjust to rejoining the team post Olympics and will Moultrie step onto the pitch June 20th? We tackle these questions and address some listener comments.
We talk about the loses to OL Reign and Orlando, the team without their national players during the Olympics, and the implications of the judge's order in the Olivia Moultrie case.
Richard's first prediction is wrong! The match will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network, NOT CBS. We hope you can tune in to root for the Thorns! Go Thorns! (We apologize for our mistake.)
We review the Challenge Cup Final, revel in the first Thorns match of the 2021 regular season and contemplate a future without Parsons.
Wherein we discuss the ̶C̶h̶a̶o̶s̶ Challenge Cup, the NWSL preseason in general, and what to expect from the upcoming season.
With vaccinations in hand and the Challenge Cup on the horizon, it's time for another episode of the first and best Portland Thorns podcast!
We're back! In our first episode since the pandemic, we try and define the current status quo, how living in a COVID world has changed women's soccer and how it has affected the NWSL and the Thorns specifically.
With Richard Budweiser at the helm we discuss the draft, John relates the plot of the 2008 children's film Bolt and Shannan shares a hot tip from a secret informant.
It's the last episode of the season and we ran long because there was so much to talk about. For instance (SPOILER ALERT) we didn't have such a great run at the end of the season. What went wrong? What changes need to be made in the off season? Who stays and who goes? All of this and more, coming up!
The end of the season kind of feels like we all took an elbow to the nose. Join us as we talk about Vlatkoball, the potential end of Christine Sinclair's career (T_T) and Nadine Angerer: Ice dancer? Plus Richard with the attendance report and your questions.
We talk about the behavior of racist fans, booing during the swearing-in of new cadets, what Buy Your Capo a Pint actually means, and even a little soccer while we're at it.
A lot has happened since the last episode, so we've got a bonus sized edition for ya! Five matches to briefly talk about (especially that cray cray one against the Courage), Rose Lavelle and concussion protocols,Richard on league attendance and we weigh in on the whole Iron Front stuff, plus Merritt complaining that nobody appreciates him.
In which we learn the meanings of some archaic terms ("breaking the duck"?!), Sky Blue anxiety, how InStat works (sorta) and what having a child means for both the player and the club.
Richard has returned from the World Cup and we debrief him, some discussion of our shall we say less than stellar performance against the Reign and a lot of jokes about Budweiser. We also have a serious discussion about Jaelene Hinkle and how to deal with a bigoted teammate.
Our foreign correspondents Richard and Jeanette Hamje are in France for the World Cup and are bringing the experience to you. Learn what the French word for "goal" is! Marvel at the heat! Shake your head at how bad Brazil is! It's like you're right there with them.
Join Patrick, John and Shannan in a discussion of the new renovations of Providence Park, the Left Behinders (or Leftovers), why John is Eyore and Patrick is Tigger and some talk about the FIFA World Cup. Plus, an edited version of our on the ground reporting from Richard and Jeanette Hamje in France (we will also be posting a longer version of the segment).
It's finally happened-- World Cup call ups have happened. What will that mean for the Thorns facing Orlando? And what happened in New Jersey? Why does John use so many mixed metaphors? Join Patrick, Richard, John and (drumroll please) Shannan for the newest episode of Riveting!
We beat Orlando! (Though maybe we shouldn't have). We drew Chicago (though maybe we shouldn't have). What about Sky Blue?
It's time! The Thorns play Orlando for the third time for a season opener. We talk preseason, the upcoming season and what happens when it's time for the World Cup. Plus, your questions!
We continue working our way through the preseason roster (and finish!)John has opinions. Hopefully the last episode with that annoying echo.
Who's on the roster for this season? More importantly, who will be gone for the World Cup and who will be left to carry the torch?
We're back! Join us as we discuss the Thorns upcoming season, as well as the loss of Lifetime, the various controversies around the NWSL and of course, the new kits.
Okay, we're back for one last episode-- We couldn't let the Thorns go to the NWSL Final without one, right? With Richard and Jeanette Hamje.
The Rose City Riveters and the Timbers Army recently decorated what were once sterile visitation rooms at the Department of Human Services with team colors, toys, games and other things to make the experience more positive for the children involved. Capo Alex Staller was one of the people involved, and while showing the room to Mark Parsons, Adie Franch and Meghan Cox after its completion ended up playing FIFA 16 on XBOX with the team...well, just listen to hear the story. It's pretty hilarious.
Despite concerns, the Thorns triumphed over the Western New York Flash...I mean, the North Carolina Courage. We discuss the match with Richard Hamje and special guest Kay Hudson, as well as taking advantage of her homeland to pick her brain about the Australian W-League.
Gwyneth Defriez and Dakota Todd join Patrick this week to talk a little bit about the Dash vs Thorns match, Carli Lloyd's unwillingness to understand what constitutes a red card as well as a conversation about why She Who Will Not Be Named never quite fit in with Portland fans. Both Gwyn and Dakota are originally from England, and so we end up exploring how soccer (or football) is viewed in each country.
Well, we had to wait for it, but finally the match arrived, the field wet, Carli Lloyd ready for fouls and the Thorns never giving up. Once the game is posted online, you can replace the crappy Go90 announcers with us instead for rewatching the match. With Richard and Jeanette Hamje. NOTE: Halftime break has been edited out. Halftime has been edited out
We intended for a 30 minute pregame for this match, but due to the weather delay, it ended up being almost two hours of conversation. With Richard and Jeanette Hamje.
An audio diary of the bus trip (aboard the cider bus) and game day experience at the Seattle Reign vs Portland Thorns match on Saturday, July 1st, 2017. Contains some NSFW language and a lot of supporter spirit.
An unedited archived live stream of Riveting's commentary on the Washington Spirit vs the Portland Thorns. An all in the family commentary with Patrick and Teressa, Richard and Jeanette, plus occasional background chewing sounds from Walter and Marlowe. Visit our website for a video of the game synced to this commentary. For external use only. Visit a doctor if your excitement exceeds 4 hours.
Patch Perryman and Richard Hamje join Patrick to talk about the subpar result vs Sky Blue FC. There is also some talk of the tifo, the Riveters themselves (and their merch) as well as Pride. (We do recognize the irony of three straight cis white men recording this episode).
Due to scheduling conflicts, we weren't able to get the podcast out before the game vs Sky Blue, so we just went ahead and put both of the match reports together in one episode! This episode Patrick is joined by Jeanette "Bitmangler" Hamje and Richard "Here a Lot" Hamje.
It's a new year, a new season, but just like the rain, we're always here! The whole Riveting crew is here to talk about the preseason, new players and where the Thorns are headed in 2017.
Despite a hard fought battle, the Thorns aren't going to be heading to Houston after all. Join us as we drink some beers, examine the "quality" reffing and chat with Roscoe Myrick of the Portland Timbros about why it was still a great game.
The Thorns have clinched the NWSL Shield/Pie Tin/Cookie Sheet! Now to the Playoff! Will the Thorns make it to the final? Is Houston in our future? This time with sound!
We'll be back with a full episode next week, but until then here's a conversation about Hope Solo to tide you over. Guest starring the other Ohlson/Ohlsen twin, Tim Ohlson!
So...maybe we were right the first time about July. To her credit, Emilie was right the whole time. After a commanding performance against Seattle, we go into the Olympics in a great position on the table. Featuring Richard Hamje. #BAONPDX
So, things aren't looking as bright as they were at the beginning of the month. Will the Thorns survive? Will Mark Parsons use that diabolical brain of his to come up with a solution? Is Meg Morris a cyborg? Find out the answers to this and more! Featuring special guest Zippy of the excellent Soccer Touchdown Podcast. #BAONPDX
A mini-episode! Capo Hailey Kilgore has been with the Riveters almost since the beginning: she began as a capo when she was 12 years old. 2016 is her last season, and as she is going off to college we wanted to hear her story while we could.
#BAONPDX Who's worried about July? Not us. Another game, another victory and the unbeaten streak continues. Some talk of new chants, the financial reality of playing as an unpaid intern and...is it true? All three hosts have returned? It's a miracle!
