Despite the constant hype of technology the past couple years, AI can't do it all, despite companies trying to make it so. Technology can streamline some processes, but there are times when AI simply can't replace human judgment and may even have their own unintentional biases. In today's episode, we break down when expert guidance is necessary and when relying on algorithms could put a company at risk. Vanessa Matsis-McCready, VP of HR services and associate general counsel for Engage PEO, joins to share her thoughts on where AI should be helping, but also where AI is hurting your business, and how to know the difference before it's too late.

This week we come to the famous parable of the Publican and the Pharisee. Jesus tells a story with a good guy and a bad guy. We hear both of their prayers, but Jesus stuns his hearers when it is actually the bad guy who receives God's approval. For those of us overly familiar with this parable, we tend to gloss over the very thing that made this so stunning for Jesus' original hearers - namely, how genuinely good the Pharisee is, especially by our modern standards. Yet if we don't wrestle with that, we miss the very joy Jesus intends here. How can our goodness be a barrier to our joy? Let's talk about why Jesus so often seems to have a bigger beef with the good guys than the bad guys: "The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly" (Luke 18:9-14).

How do you pull off the biggest, most violent smash-and-grab in human history? You can't just say that's what you're doing. You need a story. You need a justification. This episode is a three-part journey into the long, dark, and ridiculously complicated shadow of empires, framed as "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". Part 1: The "Good" We dissect the official PR campaign for global domination. This is the "civilizing mission", the "divine mandate", and the "enlightened" philosophy of men like John Locke and John Stuart Mill. We explore how scientific racism and cultural projects like Orientalism created "The Other" , culminating in the infamous "White Man's Burden". Part 2: The "Bad" This is the reckoning. We watch as the colonized turn the master's own tools—"Liberty, Equality, Fraternity"—against him, exposing the empire's glaring hypocrisy. We cover the earth-shattering Haitian Revolution, Gandhi's brilliant moral theater with the Salt March, and the groundbreaking philosophy of liberation. We dive deep into Frantz Fanon's devastating diagnosis of colonialism as a mental illness and Edward Said's unmasking of Orientalism. Part 3: The "Ugly" The story doesn't end when the flags come down. We confront the world we live in now: Neo-Colonialism. We trace how the system mutated, swapping soldiers for bankers. This is the story of the IMF and World Bank, "Structural Adjustment Programs" that crippled new nations, and the creation of a new "comprador" elite. Finally, we explore the new liberation movements, from "decolonizing the mind" to the urgent fights for debt forgiveness and climate justice. This isn't just a history lesson; it's a look at the code that still runs our world. Support me to keep the show going on Patreon https://patreon.com/dannyballan

Send us a textWant search visibility that survives the next update and shows up in AI answers? We dive straight into the real calculus of link building: what still works, what crumbles under scrutiny, and how to build a backlink profile that compounds rather than collapses. Drawing on two decades of building, buying, and selling sites, Ed breaks down backlinks into three buckets—good, bad, and ugly—and explains the risks behind each, from short‑term bumps to long, painful recoveries. We start with first principles: why links remain a core ranking signal and why AI assistants increasingly rely on citations to choose which sources to show. From there, we revisit the wild‑west years of easy link spam and the moment Penguin flipped the table, turning yesterday's playbook into a liability. No moralising here—just pragmatic risk management. If you're considering paid placements, niche edits, or PBNs, you'll hear the pattern risks that can flag manipulation: lumpy velocity, repeating footprints, irrelevant anchors and networks built on expired domains. Then we turn to the durable path. Ed outlines what makes a link “good” in practice—editorial, relevant, earned because the page genuinely helps someone else's audience—and how to create assets that attract those links without cold outreach. Think original data, simple tools, clear frameworks, and opinionated guides packaged for easy citation. You'll get a blueprint for seeding discovery through newsletters, communities, and journalists so that value finds the people who need it.If you want rankings that last, less time worrying about link spam updates, and a brand that others cite because it helps their readers, this conversation gives you the strategy and the mindset to get there. Today we go deep on throuples—what makes a three-person relationship (triad) work in real life. Our guest is Dr. Rachael Meir, a Stanford-trained psychologist, sex & relationship coach, author of 50 Questions to Ask Before Opening Your Relationship, and host of retreats designed specifically for throuples. In this episode (throuple-forward): • Shapes of throuples: V vs. closed triad, the “everyone dates everyone” myth, and why symmetry isn't the only path to stability. • Avoiding triangles (the bad kind): How to reduce coalitions, secret alliances, and “two against one” dynamics with simple, predictable check-ins. • Jealousy in 3s: Why jealousy feels different in a triad, Dr. Meir's “dashboard warning light” frame, and how to respond without spiraling. • Differentiation = less codependence: Staying three whole people (not one fused blob) actually strengthens the connection between all of you. • Logistics that keep love humane: Calendars, re-entry rituals, and short “state-of-us” huddles so no one becomes the project manager (or the parent). • Ethics & invitations: Power imbalances, “unicorn hunting,” and creating consent that's real for all three partners—not just the original pair. • Retreat lessons: What Dr. Meir sees thriving throuples do differently (language, expectations, and how they handle NRE without breaking the triangle).Plus, we pull 5 key prompts from Dr. Meir's book to ground any non-monogamy journey: • What desires/needs do I believe non-monogamy could fulfill (for me, not just my partner)? • Do I have enough self-esteem to stay out of comparison traps? • Are we differentiated—two/three whole people with overlap—rather than merged? • Are we opening to fill a void/fix a problem (and what would repair look like first)? • What small agreements would make us feel safer without turning into surveillance?Big takeaways you can use tonight • Trade control for clarity: one short weekly check-in beats constant play-by-play. • Re-entry rituals after solo or third-partner time keep connection warm and resentment low. • In triads, fairness ≠ sameness—aim for dignity for all three, not equal minutes.Find Dr. Meir: https://www.drrachaelmeir.com/Naughty Gym: https://www.naughtygym.com/

Our guest this week recently published an opinion piece criticizing how the Army undermines its health and fitness efforts through the poor nutrition environments on its installations. We dive into that conversation, looking at both the problems with Army nutrition, and the many ways leaders are working to fix them.MAJ Christina Deehl is a Registered Dietitian from Army's Medical Center of Excellence where she works in the Directorate of Training and Doctrine. Her recent op ed stirred up a lot of conversation about the gap between what Army leads aspire to in the nutrition domain of H2F and the actual food environments on our installations.Christina has 16 years of active duty service, including time with H2F at the 101st and XVIII ABC, serving as the command performance dietitian for US Army Special Operations Command, a fellowship with the Olympic Committee, clinical time at a couple hospitals, and two stints as a cultural support team leader.Around the time we recorded, research by a team she was on was also published: Normative fat-free mass index values based on body composition method in Army personnelOther references from the conversation:DA PAM 30-22 AR 30-22 Fixing the Randolph Sheppard ActGAO Report: Food Program:DOD Should Formalize Its Process for Revising Food Ingredients and Better Track Dining Facility Use and CostsGAO Report: DOD Food Program:Additional Actions Needed to Implement, Oversee, and Evaluate Nutrition Efforts for Service Members

BrownTown sits down for a follow-up conversation to earlier this year, analyzing the shock and awe strategy of the Trump-Musk aligned agenda and how we got there. Fast-forward to fall 2025, BrownTown speaks candidly on Trump's war on Chicago. While the lies and terror of ICE kidnappings, killings, and military-style raids on family housing projects color Operation Midway Blitz, Chicago fights back. More and more, the brutality and incompetence of the alphabet boys is on wide display as everyone from seasoned organizers to everyday community members hold the line and get involved in the most historically effective and creative ways. Now, with the imperial boomerang in full effect and Christian Nationalism more explicitly codified into policy after the murder of Charlie Kirk, BrownTown takes inventory of our current cultural and political moment with a sober analysis and hope for the future.
