One international forward departs and another arrives as the Orlando Pride lost a bigtime player with Adriana's transfer to the Saudi Women's Premier League. While the Brazilian attacker will be missed, the club acted quickly in snapping up Prisca Chilufya from Juarez. The Zambian forward will hopefully fit right into Seb Hines' system as the Pride look to defend their NWSL Shield and NWSL Championship in 2025. Speaking of Hines, we have an exclusive interview with the Pride's head coach in our second segment. The gaffer took time out right after a meeting with his team over at IMG Academy during preseason preparations to talk to us about the team's championship run, how he's spent his off-season, how he plans to motivate his team to repeat, what to expect from some of the players we didn't see (much or at all) last season, and much more. It's always great to talk with Seb, as he's seemingly always in a good mood and positive. Following our interview, we checked in with some of Orlando's other off-season transactions, with a goalkeeper moving to Canada and an Argentine loaned out to her home country. We discuss the moves and dive into the Pride's 2025 preseason roster. After that, it's time for us to check our mailbagbox, which asks us about free agents, sports cliches, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show. We're in our off-season schedule, so we're not sure if our next show is a week from now or perhaps early March, but we'll let the news dictate that. For now, we're monitoring things and we'll be back before you know it. Here's how Episode 74 went down: 0:15 – We open the show with our breakdown of Adriana's departure and the arrival of Chilufya. 10:14 – Seb Hines jumps on with us to talk about winning trophies, preparing to defend the team's title, and more. 30:09 - More off-season Pride transactions, the team's preseason roster, and our mailbagbox.

Orlando Pride defeated Washington Spirit in the NWSL Championship, capping a historic season. It turns out, in fact, "the Double [was] on" for the Pride, whose season included the league's most dominant defense, the immediate impact of an MVP-candidate at forward in Barbra Banda, and incredible contributions from the greatest footballer who ever lived, Marta. In this episode, we recap the final, where Washington Spirit put up a great fight -- and maybe had the advantage in some spots throughout the match -- but the NWSL Shield-winning Pride found a way to win. At the end of the episode, we try to put Marta's incredible career into some more perspective, and you'll get to hear Grant fight for his life as he tries (and largely fails) to pronounce the names of the Swedish clubs the Brazilian legend played for years ago. The 2024 NWSL Shield-winning Orlando Pride was a defensive juggernaut this season, and one of the squad's key contributors joined the show before taking on Chicago Red Stars in the Quarter-finals. Just one game after clinching the 2024 NWSL Shield, the Orlando Pride gave some starters a much-needed rest. While lineup changes have not prevented the Pride from getting positive results throughout the season, this time it was different. There were too many new faces in the lineup and the players attached to those faces did not perform well against what had been a struggling Portland Thorns side — but a proud franchise desperate to reach the postseason for its retiring captain. The venue, the surface, the crowd, the circumstances, and the rotation were too much for Orlando to overcome in their totality. Even the insertion of key starters in the second half couldn't turn the tide in a 2-0 road loss. Still, one loss may teach the team more than all the wins and draws that came before it. That will be the hope of Seb Hines as his team approaches the postseason as the league's top seed. For the first time all season, we look back on a Pride loss. We also check our score predictions from last week, and make our selections for Player of the Match. Our mailbagbox this week asked us about electrical stuff, songs, which teams will make the playoffs, and more. After the mailbagbox, we spent some time digesting the (awful) name of the new NWSL franchise in Boston. We also discussed some Pride international call-ups. Finally, we looked ahead to the Pride's matchup Sunday at Gotham FC. Last years champs have a defense like Orlando's as well as a good offense and Gotham will be seeking revenge for its recent loss at Inter&Co Stadium. We give the two teams' tale of the tape, select our key matchups, and make our score predictions. Here's how Episode 65 went down: 0:15 – The Pride went west and rested some starters. Things went...poorly. 23:51 – Our mailbagbox is both soccer-related and random. Plus, a bad team name and more Pride news. 51:45 – The Pride look to get back on track against Gotham FC on the road.

The Orlando Pride have done it! The 2024 NWSL Shield belongs to Orlando after a 2-0 home win over the second-place Washington Spirit that wasn't easy. The Spirit came in with a lot of resolve, and on a rainy night with a slick field, anything could happen. Sometimes it almost did. But, in the end, Barbra Banda earned a penalty, Marta scored it, Anna Moorhouse (and others) made some huge stops, and Adriana's foot provided some breathing room, even though she wasn't credited with a goal. We broke down the game, checked our score predictions from last week, and made our selections for Player of the Match. David Rohe provided some insight from his trip down from Tallahassee to see the game, as well. Our mailbagbox this week asked us about longitude and latitude, cheating cheaters who cheat, and when the Pride most tested our loyalty. After the mailbagbox, we looked ahead to Orlando's trip out west to play the Portland Thorns. With Hurricane Milton threatening Florida, the team had to go spend some extra days in the Pacific Northwest, so the Pride will be battling hotel legs, a new time zone, a letdown after winning the shield...oh, and also the Portland Thorns, who the Pride have only beaten once on the road. Ever. We discuss the Thorns' season to date, the series history, our key matchups for Friday night, and our final score predictions. Here's how Episode 64 went down: 0:15 – The Pride took care of the league's second-place team and claimed the Shield without putting us through any unnecessary drama over the last few games of the season. 19:21 – Our mailbagbox gets scientific this week. We learned to always trust Jimmy Buffett songs. 39:22 – The Pride have a lot going against them on this trip to Portland. Can they keep the positive results going?

The Orlando Pride returned from their road trip and found out there's no place like home. The team returned to a massive crowd and celebrated with a three-goal performance and a 3-1 win over the visiting Houston Dash, completing a sweep of the season series. Three different players scored for the Pride, and one of them wasn't Barbra Banda, but the Zambian international did pick up an assist. The win put the Pride on the brink of claiming the 2024 NWSL Shield, but there are some big obstacles still in the way. We broke down the game, checked our score predictions from last week, and made our selections for Player of the Match. The Orlando Pride returned to league play on Friday and, despite some difficulties, managed to get a second-half goal and a little bit of luck to beat the Houston Dash 1-0. The Pride established a new NWSL record for consecutive games unbeaten (18), along with a few more club single-season records. We break down the match, speak glowingly of Angelina's pass and Summer Yates' goal, check in on our score predictions, and make our selections for Player of the Match. Our mailbagbox this week was helpful to someone who asked a question last week. In addition, we were asked about which team was the Pride's biggest NWSL Shield threat and whether we should be concerned about the defensive performance in Houston. After the mailbagbox, we look ahead to NJ/NY Gotham FC's visit to Inter&Co Stadium on Sunday. We check the tale of the tape and past history and provide our key matchups and score predictions for the heavyweight battle to come this weekend. Here's how Episode 58 went down: 0:15 – It wasn't easy, but the Orlando Pride finally beat the Dash in Houston for the first time in years. 14:54 – Our mailbagbox revisits old requests and makes new ones. 27:55 – Gotham is playing well, so the Pride have to be sharp on Sunday.

NWSL Matchweek 15 Spotlights: Two teams and two players

In our endless search to discuss the NWSL through as many lenses as possible, we decided to look at Matchweek 15 through the lens of two teams and two players who jumped out to us. Spotlight teams - North Carolina Courage smothered Washington Spirit in their 1-0 victory in Washington DC Saturday, and their smothering defense caught Dino's eye. On top of that, the club is anxiously awaiting the arrival of Australian attacker/midfielder Cortnee Vine, as well as the potential return of 2023 NWSL MVP Kerolin. Big things happening in Cary, North Carolina. - Chicago Red Stars went to San Diego and scored a 3-0 win over the Wave (*Please see the editorial note below*) Grant talked about what he saw in Chicago's big away victory, then wondered aloud about the makeup of this Chicago side and how things might shake out in the playoffs. Spotlight players - Dino broke down the impact of Claire Hutton, the 18-year-old defensive midfielder for the Kansas City Current, who has been a stalwart for the club at the top of the table. Through a mix of consistency, good decision-making, and availability, Hutton is making a real mark on the league in her rookie campaign. - Grant chose to spotlight Orlando Pride's Adriana and her weekend brace vs. Angel City FC. The Brazilian winger has been racking up good performances the past six weeks, and she could prove to be a pivotal piece in Orlando's chase for the NWSL Shield and the NWSL Championship. Editorial note: This episode was recorded on July 1, two days before Brittany Alvarado, former Video and Creative Manager at San Diego Wave FC, released a statement about the treatment she and other employees endured while at the club. San Diego Wave FC announced the club has parted ways with manager Casey Stoney. Dino and Grant talk about Stoney's time at the Wave, including the club winning the 2023 NWSL Shield and the 2024 Challenge Cup, before diving into what's been a dismal 14 weeks to start this season. After that, your boys talk about the three teams at the front of the line in the title race: Kansas City Current, Orlando Pride, and Washington Spirit. We dive into the stats and storylines for those big three, but we haven't forgotten that Gotham FC and Portland Thorns FC remain alive in the title race with roughly half the season remaining. Finally, we discussed Seattle Reign FC's home draw vs. Racing Louisville, which led to Reign manager Laura Harvey providing some insight into the club's future plans during the post-match press conference. For the majority of clubs, we are 35 percent of the way through the NWSL season, and Dino and Grant have some thoughts about what we might see the rest of the way. We started with the four favorites to win the NWSL Shield and discussed a relevant storyline related to each club: Orlando Pride: Depth, flexibility, BANDA Washington Spirit: Croix Bethune is very, very good Portland Thorns FC: Sophia Smith playing for her second-straight Golden Boot and third-straight MVP Kansas City Current: Chawinga + depth = Success! (Plus, the amazing contribution of African-born players in the NWSL) After that, we talked a little about the rest of the teams in the league -- dedicating varying amounts of time to each. Finally, we closed out with a brief (very brief, like, 3-4-minute) discussion about Championship Saturday in the WSL. Chelsea can lock up its fifth-consecutive league title in Emma Hayes' final match with the club with a win over Manchester United; but Manchester City is lurking if Chelsea falters. S2E48 - For the Glory KC is back with the 55th episode of the show! On this week's episode, Sporting Kansas City don't play a game, so instead we take the opportunity to look at their roster and play Fantasy Sporting Director. Imagine if Sporting KC's ownership put us in charge of roster decisions. We decided who to re-sign, who to cut and who's option(s) to decline. Additionally, we both get the chance to buy out one Sporting KC player's contract to save the salary room and get them off the books (and the roster). And finally, we decide what positions are of the biggest need at this moment. There are a lot of easy choices on who to bring back but, but a couple of very tough decisions. Sheena has a bit more of a heart, but in the ruthless business of sports, I act accordingly.  You'll probably want to look at all the contracts and salaries to know if we made the right choices. We also talk about Sporting KC's season ending awards, who we voted for, and who actually won.  Not to be left out, the KC Current battled back to earn a 2-2 draw against NJ/NY Gotham and to secure the 4th overall pick in the 2024 NWSL College Draft. And of course, the Digital Crawl, y'all! We dive into the following topics: Gadi Kinda's International games were cancelled. The United States U-23s Won! MLS 22 Under 22 snubbed Jake Davis. Austin FC 2, who eliminated SKC II, are in the MLS Next Pro finals. And the San Diego Wave win the NWSL Shield! Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC Fantasy Sporting Director - 5:10 One buyout and a wish list for SKC - 52:14 SKC Award Winners - 1:05:48 KC Current Earn a Draw - 1:11:58 Digital Crawl - 1:18:36 Upcoming Games USMNT vs. Ghana - Tuesday, October 17th at 7:30 PM CST USA U-23s vs. Japan - Tues, Oct 17th at 9:30 PM (ussoccer.com) Sporting KC vs. Minnesota United - Saturday, October 21st at 8:00 PM Spotify took away our ads (which is a win for most, because they pay so little and annoyingly break up the podcast), so we turned on "Listener Support." Orlando City was a little groggy after the international break and despite taking a lead early in the second half against New York City FC, the Lions couldn't kill off the pesky Pigeons and conceded twice to lose a vital match in the chase for a playoff spot. That leaves Orlando in a precarious position with two matches left to play. Both are winnable, but both are also loseable and the Lions are not exactly in their best run of form after losing three of the last four. We break down the game at Red Bull Arena (seriously, build a damn stadium already, NYCFC!) and make our picks for Man of the Match from the 2-1 road loss. The Orlando Pride mercifully ended their tumultuous 2022 campaign by following their seven-game unbeaten run with a six-game winless skid to close the season. The Pride were never really in it against the Reign, who went on to win not only the game, but the NWSL Shield as well. It's going to be an interesting off-season for GM Ian Fleming and the Pride organization, and it sure would be nice if the league would let us know if Amanda Cromwell is out or not. We also touched on the depressing report by the independent investigation into player abuse in women's professional soccer and some of the horrific things that we learned from it and we just want the players to be safe. That's it. That's all that matters. This week's mailbag asked us to name names, and I did. We also explained how to achieve “friend of the pod” status and improved one aspect of five Orlando City players. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we previewed Orlando City's visit south to take on Tropic Thunder rival Inter Miami tonight and the regular-season finale against the Columbus Crew on Sunday, giving our key match-ups and score predictions. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 314 went down: 0:15 - The Lions lost a vital chance to all but assure themselves a spot in the postseason and now comes the white knuckle finish. 27:59 - The Pride ended the season as they started, by being bad at soccer. 56:29 - The mailbag beckons us. This week, The Coaching Journey Podcast is excited to welcome Sean Nahas on the show! Sean is the current First Team Assistant Coach of the 2018 NWSL Champions, North Carolina Courage, as well as serving as the Girls Development Academy Director for the Courage. When the WNY Flash moved to North Carolina, becoming the Courage, they were a team that had just finished as NWSL Champions. Finishing as runners-up in 2017, the NC Courage capped off an incredible second season as NWSL Shield winners and NWSL Champions! Our conversation is an insightful one as Sean discusses his work with the Courage, the elite team culture fostered at the club, and his role in establishing that very same culture in the academy, with the hopes of developing excellent players on the field and people off the field. Episode 100! We made it this far reviewing a lot of great beers (a couple that were gross), and chatting a lot of soccer. Thank you for joining us along the way, and here's to 100 more! On this episode we look at some top matches from week 6 of the Premier League, and then look at the playoff hunt going down in MLS. We also look at North Carolina Courage and their fantastic run into, and winning the NWSL Shield and Championship. This show wraps up with a look back at some of our favorite moments and beers tried from the last 99 episodes. For this anniversary episode, we each brought in a beer to review. Ferris brought in Left Hand Brewing's Oktoberfest, Blake introduced the crew to Sierra Nevada's 2018 Oktoberfest brewed in partnership with the world's oldest brewery, Weihenstephan, and finally, Ron brings in a Halloween themed beer in Southern Tier Brewing's Warlock. - Love the beer, cherish the game.
