The Yogi Roth Show: How Great Is Ball
A New Era for the Pac-12 Begins — With CBS at the Helm

This morning, the Pac-12 officially announced a historic partnership with CBS Sports — marking a bold new chapter for a conference on the rise. And today on Y-Option, presented by our founding partner 76, we welcomed back Commissioner Teresa Gould for her first full-length conversation since the deal was made public.Make no mistake — this is a monumental move. Starting July 1, 2026, when the new league officially launches, CBS becomes the anchor partner of the new-look Pac-12. That means college football and basketball — including the conference title games — will air across CBS, Paramount+ and CBS Sports Network, joining the same lineup that once featured the SEC and now hosts Big Ten games. And soon, the Pac-12.“This wasn't just about a TV deal,” Commissioner Gould told me. “It was about exposure, economics, and transformation — and CBS checks all three boxes.”Inside the CBS Deal:From our exclusive conversation, here's what stood out:✅ Broadcast + Cable CoverageCBS will carry premier Pac-12 football and men's basketball matchups, alongside CBS Sports Network for expanded programming. The conference championship games will be aired nationally.✅ Strategic AlignmentThe Pac-12's media rights journey didn't just attract interest — it created competition. CBS was among the first to reach out after the conference announced its reformation, and ultimately, their values and vision aligned.✅ The Power of ProductionThe decision to retain Pac-12 Enterprises was key. “Our ability to produce content efficiently and at a high level was a major asset,” said Gould. Expect the Pac-12's in-house production capabilities, led by Senior Vice President of Business Development and Studio Operations Michael Molinari, to power even more content — from live games to NIL opportunities for athletes.“We're Building an Unconference Conference.”Commissioner Gould called it a “blank slate” — a chance to build something new without the constraints of legacy deals or outdated models. And she's doing just that. From the media rights rollout to adding new member schools, the strategy has been deliberate. This phased approach is redefining how a conference is built. With CBS now officially locked in, the next move? Finalizing an 8th football member by 2026 to fulfill FBS requirements and to bring the new league to nine schools overall.“There's no playbook for this,” Commissioner Gould told me. “We're not just rebuilding. We're reimagining.”More from Our Conversation:

For the Glory KC
Two Sporting KC Rumors and Vermes Says it's Pulskamp's Job

For the Glory KC

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2025 80:03

For the Glory KC is back with the 116th episode of the show!  Sporting Kansas City have not one, but two rumored signings coming to town. While it's two rumored players, they are both from the same team. The first one we learned about early last week appears to be the Designated Player #10 the team has been saying they are chasing. That's Manu Garcia (learn more about Manu here). The second rumor is for right-winger Magomed-Shapi Suleymanov (more on Shapi here). Both players play for Aris in the Greek first division. The rumored combined fee, according to GiveMeSport's Tom Bogert comes in around €5 million. We get into the details and stats for each player and try to decide if these feel like good signings. One notch in favor of Garcia, despite his lower numbers are those of another Spanish midfielder Mike Burns brought to MLS. Look at the stats both before and after arriving in MLS: La Liga: 74 GP, 3 G, 9A, 4,702 min LALiga2: 49 GP, 4G, 1A, 3,044 min Premier League: 28 GP, 2G, 2A, 1,799 min MLS: 157 GP, 39G, 45A, 13,402 minutes and an MLS MVP That player? Carles Gil for the New England Revolution. He joined just a year younger at 26-years-old and went from relatively unimpressive numbers to being one of the best players in the league. There is no saying if Manu Garcia can do that, but Vermes and Burns surely have to hope so. It's worth noting that both Garcia and Suleymanov were held out of Aris' game this weekend. Teams don't do that for no reason, but it's always possible it still falls through. Randomly snuck into the middle of this rumor conversation was a prior rumored signing, Unai Hernandez, who appears headed to Saudi Arabia for big money. We also found a way to work in Dom Dwyer leaving the Oakland Roots. In addition to talking rumors, we have to mention the second straight preseason loss for Sporting KC, this time to Chicago. It's tough to take much from a game we didn't see, but there were some good quotes from Peter Vermes and Erik Thommy. One of those quotes was Vermes confirming he's happy with John Pulskamp as the starting goalkeeper and he has no plans to add a veteran keeper. It'll be an extremely young GK room with Pulskamp (23), Ryan Schewe (22) and Jack Kortkamp (16 now, 17 on the 28th). Is that the right decision? Finally, the KC Current and the entire NWSL have their schedule announced. They open the season (again) against the Portland Thorns, this time on March 15th. They play a perfectly balanced 26 game regular season schedule, 13 games, against all 13 other teams, before a break, then they repeat the task after the CBA summer break. Boomer details the traffic he hit yesterday when he left early for a doctor's appointment. Like, really detailed it. We talked about Mike Tomlin and how Steeler's fans want him gone, while fans of teams in need of a head coach would love him. Boomer said Woody is making the decision on who the Jets head coach will be. Boomer said he feels like the Jets are hiring Aaron Glenn. So once again the Jets look like they're going with a first time head coach. C-Lo is in for Jerry and is here for his first update of the day, but first we talked about that time Gio used off brand ED pills and he ‘locked up' and firefighters had to come help. Gio asks if any of us have tried Viagra. C-Lo has the sounds of the Knicks beating the Sixers in Philadelphia. In the final segment of the hour, Gio got a letter in the mail by someone who doesn't like the ‘subway surfing' that's done in the show open on CBS Sports Network. CBS actually took it out of the open earlier this week. Gio wonders if it's safer on top of the subway or in the subway.

Hour 2 We talked about baseball free agency concerning Vlad Guerrero Jr., Pete Alonso and the Mets. We have not seen the flurry of activity we expected from the Mets after the Juan Soto signing. Gio said nobody really cares about pitchers and catchers reporting, they just like that it means better weather is on the way. If there was a draft for months of the year, January and February have to be the 2 last picks. A lawyer calls to say Snapple had a commercial that had to be removed because people were doing dangerous things. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with the sounds of the Knicks beating the Sixers in Philadelphia. The Nets suffered their worst loss in franchise history last night to the Clippers. Aaron Glenn was asked how he'd handle offense if he got a head coaching job. Boomer said Glenn would definitely connect with the players like Mike Vrabel does. In the final segment of the hour, the Jets have interviewed so many people for head coach. Gio doesn't think Aaron Glenn is a good fit for the Jets. Hour 3 We talked about TGL golf and Tiger Woods' involvement. Boomer said the product is ‘ok'. Gio seemed to like it more, and said ‘it's fine'. Gio will watch anything golf related. We watched a lot of bad football this season in the NFL. There were a lot of really bad teams. Betting and fantasy keep us interested in teams and games that are terrible. The poor level of play even spilled into Wild Card weekend. There are a lot of things that contribute to ‘crappier football'. Boomer thinks they're adding another game and teams will have 2 bye weeks and Netflix will be in the mix for the regular season. We then wondered if CBS Sports Network would cut away if one of us was choking on the air. Aly, our makeup artist, has Norovirus and Gio's concerned he is now going to get it. Hour 1 Wild Card weekend is over and there were a lot of disappointing games. The most disappointing performance from an individual was Justin Herbert and the Steelers were the most disappointing team performance. The Steelers looked ‘leader-less' according to Boomer. The Ravens/Bills is going to be a great matchup of 2 MVP candidates in their prime. In the Packers/Eagles game, cameras caught AJ Brown reading a motivational book while sitting on the bench. That was him sending a message that they were barely using him. He had one catch for 10 yards. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of the Commanders beating the Bucs. We heard the Baker Mayfield fumble and the game winning FG. AJ Brown talked about the book he was reading on the sideline. Jordan Love was asked about his struggles, including 3 INTs. Josh Allen had an incredible TD throw on 4th and one. Mike Tomlin talked about the Steelers performance. In the final segment of the hour, the Jets interviewed the Maryland head coach and Boomer had no idea that was happening and doesn't think it's a realistic choice for the Jets. The Jets seem to be waiting for someone still coaching in the playoffs. We talked about the Rooney Rule and whether it works or not. Hour 2 We talked briefly about colleges and universities having a ton of money to pay athletes and yet they are still looking for alumni to donate. Boomer got a letter from Maryland looking for money. We talked about the draft and Boomer doesn't think Shedeur Sanders will agree to go to the Titans or the Browns. That would set him up to be drafted by the Giants to play with Malik Nabers. The dream scenario for Deion would be for him to coach the Raiders and for them to draft Shedeur. There are reports Tom Brady really wants Ben Johnson for the Raiders, but there is no QB there right now. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of Bucs radio as the Commanders kick the game winning FG. Baker Mayfield had a terrible fumble and Todd Bowles was asked about it. The Eagles beat the Packers but it wasn't pretty and Saquon talked about that. Jalen Hurts was asked about AJ Brown reading a book on the sideline. Boomer wonders how we each ‘find our flow'. George Pickens was asked after the Steelers' loss if he's optimistic going forward and he said, ‘uh, nah'. Kevin O'Connell is preparing to play as if they're playing in Los Angeles. The Patriots hired Mike Vrabel. In the final segment of the hour, former Ranger Sean Avery told the story of playing in a men's hockey league and having to knock a guy off his skates after he was bragging about his fourth goal of the game. He was banned from men's hockey in the state of California. We talked about traffic now that congestion pricing has been put into place. Boomer said businesses seem to be hurting because of it. Hour 3 We watched a lot of bad football this season in the NFL. There were a lot of really bad teams. Betting and fantasy keep us interested in teams and games that are terrible. The Cincinnati men's basketball team trailed by one point late, but No. 11 Kansas scored 14 straight points to pull away down the stretch to win, 54-40, on Saturday at Fifth Third Arena. The Bearcats (10-5 overall, 0-4 Big 12) were led by junior forward Dillon Mitchell (10 points) and post Arrinten Page, who scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench. Kansas was led by center Hunter Dickinson, who had a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards. The Jayhawks improved to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Mitchell's jumper with 7:33 left made the score 38-37, but Kansas responded with the game-defining run en route to victory. Consecutive paint baskets by Kansas center Hunter Dickinson and Shakeel Moore put the Jayhawks ahead 42-37. KU guard Zeke Mayo made a layup and then intercepted a Day Day Thomas pass and found Moore for an alley-oop dunk that extended the lead to 46-37. Mayo made another jumper and Kansas forward KJ Adams drilled two free throws to cap the run and give the visitors a 52-37 lead with 1:34 left. Cincinnati's dry spell ended when reserve forward Josh Reed made a 3-pointer at the 1:15 mark.  Reed (five points) combined with Page and guards CJ Fredrick and Thomas to give the Bearcats a spark off the bench. UC held a 16-10 edge in that category. Cincinnati led 25-24 at halftime thanks to 18 points in the paint, including eight from Mitchell. Cincinnati started the game on an 8-2 run with Mitchell skying for an alley-oop dunk for the game's first points.   The Bearcats led by as many as seven in the first half after junior wing Dan Skillings Jr. scored five straight points to put UC in front 21-14 seven minutes before the break. Mitchell's one-handed slam extended Cincinnati's lead to 25-20, but Kansas' KJ Adams made a layup, and AJ Storr hit two free throws, cutting the Bearcats' lead to 1 at the half.   FROM WES MILLER "Needless to say, it's been disappointing couple of weeks, there's no doubt about that. Every part of our team and our program feels that disappointment, I thought our guys came out and played with the kind of energy and the kind of effort and the kind of approach that we should expect, and they played to our standard in that way, coming out of the gates, I was proud of that fight. They've responded well this week to a really disappointing game at Baylor because we didn't have that and I'm proud of that. I'm proud of the way they've stuck together, proud of the way that they're working. I'm proud of the way that they care.  "We didn't make enough plays in the second half. At the end of the first half, and second half, we didn't make enough plays to get over the home tonight. It certainly was frustrating, because some of the mistakes that we made felt very controllable. Not only did they hurt us from converting offensively, they let the baskets on the other end, and that's where the game gets away from you. The offensive board for Kansas. What was a little frustrating there to start the second half, and at times, because we get them to miss, and we couldn't clear some defensive rebounds. Again, the way we finished the first half and some of those aspects of the second half, I'm very well aware of it. There's a little on it for us right now. We're not making shots and we're not converting. Well, even if we do get easy shots, it'll come off. We'll find our offensive rhythm again. We'll find our swagger again offensively." Dillon Mitchell on the message within the team “I think it's just all the little things and we have to stay together. I told the team the other day that we have 16 games left in the conference. I don't even think we've played that many games so far. There's still a lot of season left, and I think we just got to continue to stay together and keep working hard every day in practice, and then translate, bring what we do at practice to the game. It's all the little details that we work on. I mean, there's so much basketball left, and we trust the coaches and trust each other. We know the shots are going to start to fall and when they do, everything's going to open up for us. We just have to continue to lock in, stay focused on the details and stay together. That is the biggest thing. It's all about the 15 other guys in that locker room and all the coaches. That's all that matters. There's a lot of basketball left. We just have to keep fighting and we will respond.”  UP NEXT   Cincinnati hits the road on Wednesday to face Colorado in Boulder, Colo., at 9 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPN+. The Bearcats return to Fifth Third Arena next Saturday, Jan. 18, to host Arizona State at 2 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.

In a mere three years, Terrence Oglesby has established himself as a successful college basketball broadcaster and analyst. It's taken lots of hustle and networking, but most of all Oglesby's continued upward trajectory is a tribute to his smooth style and his strong command of the game. Oglesby's duties consist of: Analyst for Charlotte Hornets home games; ESPN; FOX; NBA TV; The Field of 68; and CBS Sports Network. Just this past week he was in Milwaukee broadcasting a game Monday night, and by the next afternoon he was driving from Atlanta to Clemson to work his alma mater's game against Eastern Kentucky. The former sharpshooter for Oliver Purnell spent several years living in Clemson, but last fall he moved his family to Greenville so he could be closer to the airport. Oglesby gives his thoughts on the current state of Clemson basketball under Brad Brownell. He's convinced that Brownell is going to lead the Tigers to sustained prominence as Brownell continues to take advantage of the transfer portal and maintaining the relationships with major donors that are necessary to pay for high-end talent in the NIL era.
