In today's episode, Liam revives a prior series from the beginning of the podcast, Woso Weekly, covering the latest news in women's soccer with insightful analysis. He covers the signing of the Icelandic superstar Sveindis Jonsdottir to Angel City FC. He talks about her fit with the club, what this move means for the NWSL as a whole, and why Svendis will reignite an Angel City team that has had ups and downs this season. He also examines the shocking announcement of Jonathon Giraldez's exit from the Washington Spirit just 10 months after his arrival, to a club also owned by Michelle Kang. He acknowledges why this decision undermines the NWSL, and why it is bad press for the league (on top of other PR disasters he covers.) He also talks about what this means for the club going forward, with coaching instability being a saddening trend for the Spirit.Lastly, he talks USWNT U-23 Camp, covering everything from the roster selected, the inconsistent history of the existence of the program, and subsequently the prior generations lost due to this. Janni Nation, this one is for you! We've got a special episode featuring URFC's newest fan favorite — the dynamic and versatile Danish international, Janni Thomsen. Janni tells us her soccer story, what made this the perfect time to move to the NWSL, and what she aspires to accomplish with the Royal's and Denmark. By the end of the episode, we think you'll love her as much as we do, both on the field and off. We also recap the insane 3-3 draw against the Washington Spirit at Rowdy Audi, and hope it can be a momentum swing as they host the reigning champs, Orlando Pride on Friday at home. Let's show up big for our team! Thanks as always for listening, and thanks to ABC4Utah for presenting this podcast.
The numbers? Still Sticky! But before they dive back in, Eric and Evan briefly discuss the latest USWNT Roster and one very notable omission (hint: it rhymes Shmorbin Shmalbert). Then, the guys are joined once more by Kim McCauley of the Guardian to finish their review of the data, check their sometimes questionable priors (Utah), and call out a few of their own goals (again, Utah). Teams featured in Part II: Utah Royals (5:42) North Carolina Courage (14:13) Gotham (20:32) Bay FC (27:36) Kansas City Current (35:36) Orlando Pride (44:59) Washington Spirit (58:21) Join our Patreon for only $6/month ($60/year) to get all of our exclusive bonus content! The URFC squad is back, though missing our beloved Sir Sean, for an episode that goes beyond the pitch. We take a moment to send our thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support to Savy King as she begins her road to recovery. We hold space for reflections from those who know Savy best: her teammate in LA and former Royals player, Christen Press, and Alex Loera, a close friend and former teammate. We also share post-game media from Royals head coach, Jimmy Coonraets, who offers a heartfelt reminder that some things are truly bigger than the game. We recap the Royals' recent losses and struggles on the pitch against the Courage and Angel City, and preview Saturday's road match against the Washington Spirit, hoping to bring home points before we face Orlando Pride at home next week. As always, thank you for listening! Royal Riot is presented by ABC4Utah.
Believe it or not, the guys were already planning on featuring the Chicago Stars' 3-2 loss at home to the Washington Spirit as their game of the week, and then Lesley Ryder published her story on the state of the Stars. Much of what Stars GM Richard Feuz said that piece was embodied by Chicago, who put up their best attacking performance at home in nearly three years, but promise little for the future. The guys whip around the league (1:45) and then dive into what the Spirit's defense is still missing, and what the Stars are now at this crucial juncture (34:07). The whiparound, like the weekend's NWSL action, doesn't exactly quicken the guys' pulses on today's episode (00:41). But there are many important things to address with the Washington Spirit's 1-0 road win against the Orlando Pride, not least of which is the handling of Ashley Hatch's concussion (10:48). This week's featured game takes us down to Kentucky, where the Wave pasted Racing 4-1. But what was going on beneath the surface? Is San Diego a contender? Do the underlying data or the eye test (plus a soft schedule) tell the realer story of Louisville's first five games (19:07)? The Orlando Pride lost a home game, which hasn't happened in a while. If I were wired in any kind of normal way, I'd remember how great that 22-match unbeaten run at home was, rather than the absolute howler that helped put a stop to that streak. But I'm wired like I am, which means obsessing and wondering why an experienced player continues to make the kinds of plays that indicate no learning has been done to prevent furthere such errors. Orlando's 1-0 home loss to the Washington Spirit could have happened in a variety of ways. After all, the Spirit are a top team in the NWSL. They're talented. They're well coached. They're hard to break down and difficult to keep off the board. Yet it was simply Anna Moorhouse's refusal to make a simple pass to the left while under pressure that turned what could have been an unsastisfying-but-hard-fought 0-0 draw into a loss.We look back at another subpar offensive night for the Pride, check our score predictions from last week, and make our selections for Player of the Match. This week's mailbagbox wants us to put the loss into perspective, asks us to opine on whether Adriana's loss is affecting the Pride's scoring, wonders what it'll take for a different goalkeeper to get minutes for Orlando, wants to know where Angelina should be playing, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. You can use that same hashtag and hit @TheManeLand.bsky.social up on Bluesky. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show.Following our mailbagbox segment, we look ahead to Friday's date with Angel City. The Pride have faced their first adversity of the 2025 season, so it'll be interesting to see if they can bounce back against an opposing team that has yet to lose in Orlando. We look at the series history and the current position of both clubs, provide our key matchups for Friday, and make our predictions for the final score of the match. If you'd like to support our independent writing and podcasting efforts, we'd love to have you as a subscriber or donor over at our Buy Me a Coffee site. Here's how Episode 83 went down:0:15 – The Pride lost a home game for the first time in more than a year and a simple timely pass would have allowed the club to avoid dropping all three points.10:27 - Our listeners have all of the questions. We have some of the answers.31:50 – The Pride will look to rebound from their loss to Washington on Friday when Angel City visits.
Join us LIVE for an exciting Pride Pod episode as we dive into the latest Orlando Pride headlines!

The Orlando Pride returned from the break and picked up basically where they left off, playing well enough to beat the Seattle Reign on the road, while not exactly impressing with the performance that earned those three points. All wins in the NWSL are good, and none seem to come easily, but the Pride made things unnecessarily difficult on themselves in the second half with giveaways and inconsistent defending. Anna Moorhouse had to come up huge late in the game to preserve a 1-0 lead that Barbra Banda had supplied just before halftime. We look back at another low-scoring Pride win, check our score predictions from last week's show, and make our selections for Player of the Match. This week's mailbagbox wants to know how the Pride turned around their history of past failures, how smart USWNT Head Coach Emma Hayes is, narratives about the Pride-Spirit series, and more. Orlando may have won trophies with consecutive victories over the Spirit, but Washington got the last laugh by winning the postgame penalty shootout to claim the 2025 NWSL Challenge Cup at Inter&Co Stadium. The Pride will have to be sharper than they've been at both ends in recent games to hold off one of the league's top contenders.
