Hello and welcome to the StemZ Perspectives - A podcast created and led entirely by young people with a passion for science from Young Scientists Journal! Throughout these episodes, our alternating hosts will be engaging in insightful discussions on a number of scientific topics. From climate change to coronavirus, there’s sure to be something to interest everyone! We will also be having a number of special guests on the show, including industry professionals, who will be able to discuss their latest research and provide expert insights into their field.

    Dr Terence Tao was interviewed by our Social Media Lead, Preyasi Gaur. Dr Tao is an Australian-American mathematician. He is a Mathematics Professor at UCLA and has worked on a variety of topics in mathematics from probability theory to partial differential equations. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 2006 “for his contributions to partial differential equations, combinatorics, harmonic analysis and additive number theory.” Considered a prodigy, Dr Tao has a lot of feathers in his cap: youngest Mathematics Olympiad Medallist, youngest person to be made professor at UCLA at 24, and one of the youngest and first Australian Fields Medallist.     In this episode, we talk with Dr. Michael Mastrandrea - an affiliated scientist with the Carnegie Institute of science - about climate change and the impact of coronavirus on it.  Background Information:   Michael Mastrandrea has 20 years of experience in climate change science and climate and energy policy analysis to inform public and private decisions at global, national, and subnational scales. Since 2015, he has led Near Zero, a climate and energy non-profit based on Stanford campus that is focused on the design and implementation of the scientifically grounded policy. Previously, he was part of the leadership team for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report, a global report on climate change science and policy options for world governments. He has also served as an Assistant Consulting Professor at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. Michael received his Ph. D. from Stanford as the first graduate of the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER), where he was a Department of Energy Global Change Education Program Fellow. He serves on the Editorial Board and as Managing Editor for the journal Climatic Change.
