Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org From August 2025. Today's 2 topics: - In a recent study Dr. Lynnane George and her co-authors investigate Space Elevator technology to remove materials from Ceres and deliver them to orbital depots around the solar system. The tiny gravity of Ceres, nano-fiber technology, and different water propulsion systems are utilized by Dr. George and her team to construct theoretically possible systems which would extract raw materials from Ceres and deliver them to low Earth orbit and other locations within the solar system. These researchers estimate such a transport system could reduce fuel costs by up to 60% compared to transport from the Earth's surface.   - Asteroid 2024 YR4 will not hit the Earth in 2032, has a 4% chance of hitting the Moon, and most likely will pass within 900 miles of the lunar surface. If 2024 YR4 were to impact the Moon it could send about the mass of several small cargo ships into space with lunar escape velocity and could pose a threat to our satellites.

Cáceres was targeted by a dam company, with an assist from the police, military, government officials and international banks because of her effective organizing on behalf of her people, the Lenca. Nina Lakhani literally wrote the book on Cáceres’s killing, and in this episode she walks us through what happened then, what’s happening now, the role the U.S. played in all of it, and what Americans can learn from the way Honduran activists continue to show up in the face of violent repression. Mini podcast about this day in history, 2 March 2016, when Honduran Indigenous environmental activist Berta Cáceres was assassinated in her home. Of Lenca descent, she co-founded the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), and was a leading participant in defending Lenca land from illegal logging and US military bases. She was also an advocate for LGBT+ and women's rights, and believed that: “Mother Earth – militarized, fenced-in, poisoned, a place where basic rights are systematically violated – demands that we take action.” At the time of her murder, Cáceres was heavily in Indigenous protests against hydroelectric dams being constructed by energy company DESA alongside Chinese firm Sinohydro and the World Bank. Several members of COPINH were killed by the Honduran military and company security during protests, which eventually forced Sinohydro and the World Bank to withdraw from the project. Cáceres was eventually shot dead in her home. A Mexican environmentalist, Gustavo Castro Soto, was also shot twice but survived. Nine men were later arrested and charged for the murder. They included the executive president of DESA, who was also a former military intelligence officer, as well as three other current or retired military officers, two of whom had been trained by the US military at the notorious School of the Americas. Eight were subsequently convicted and jailed, including the DESA president.Learn more about Cáceres' life and murder in this book: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/products/who-killed-berta-caceres-nina-lakhaniOur work is only possible because of support from you, our listeners on patreon.

Today we listen to the tale of Erysichthon of Thessaly, a mad king under a curse. His hubris and savagery so angered the mother goddess Ceres, that the icy Goddess Famine cursed him with an insatiable appetite. Trying to fill the voracious void, the king lays waste to the entire kingdom and ultimately devours even himself. In the tradition of myth, it is a living tale, and this one, an eerie mirror of the present. When our search for meaning, becomes a search for soul, we inevitably find ourselves “entangled in myth,” said James Hillman, Jungian analyst and founder of archetypal psychology. Join us as we free ourselves from our mythic entanglement with mad kings and monsters.      Thanks to @iamlucasbakker - Blue Medicine Journal's editor, producer, musician and composer!

At the dawn of the 19th century, the celestial police were on patrol. They were looking for a planet between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. And on the century’s first day, a future squad member found one – sort of. Later discoveries showed that it wasn’t a planet at all, but the first and largest member of the asteroid belt – a wide band of millions of rocky bodies. Astronomers were looking for a planet because of the numbers. There seemed to be a mathematical relationship between the distances from the Sun to the known planets. But there was a gap between Mars and Jupiter. So one astronomer began organizing a search party: the celestial police. Giuseppe Piazzi, at the Palermo Observatory in Sicily, was on the list of people to invite. But he was already searching on his own. And before he got his invitation, he found something – 225 years ago today. Piazzi originally thought it was a comet – but hoped for something bigger. As other astronomers began studying it, they decided it was the sought-after planet. They named it Ceres, for the Roman goddess of agriculture. Within a few years, though, they’d found several other bodies in similar orbits. So they realized that Ceres wasn’t a planet at all, but just one member of a band of debris – the asteroid belt. Today, Ceres has regained its planetary status – sort of. It’s a dwarf planet – the only one in the inner solar system. Script by Damond Benningfield
