Are you ready to tell someone about Jesus? How can you be prepared? Matt Smethurst, author of Before You Open Your Bible and companion book Before You Share Your Faith, outlines seven tips for becoming “evangelism ready.”“The greatest obstacle to evangelism is not unbelievers,” Smethurst says. “The greatest obstacle to evangelism is Christians who don't share the gospel.”
Once a year, astronomers descend upon an unsuspecting UK city in the greatest gathering of astronomically curious minds: the National Astronomy Meeting, otherwise known as NAM (no, not that ‘Nam, though it is quite the battle of the minds). Jen was lucky enough to attend this year and this episode is the first in a series of talks recorded at NAM 2023. We're delighted to bring you the expertise of none other than Dr Becky Smethurst of Oxford University (you may know her as Dr Becky on Youtube). In this talk, Dr Becky teaches us how to grow a supermassive black hole – and it's not as easy as you think! Always picture a black hole as a gigantic hoover, sucking up everything that dares to stray too close? Think again…

This episode is a conversation with composer and Web III researcher (and internet sceptic!) Reilly Smethurst. Is it a pessimistic episode? I actually don't think so. My take: The fact that the internet does not replace real-life communities and live gatherings around art, and hurts artists by creating global, algorithmically-moderated competition, is an empowering bit of knowledge which I hope inspires listeners to find ways to make art outside the internet and use the internet in smart ways to their advantage. Reilly and I talk about the strange disbalance between the number of viable career paths for artists and the number of people studying creative disciplines, the absurdities of arts funding, the difference between the Dionysian and Apollonian approach to creating, artificial scarcity, how regulation may be the only answer to the excesses of the online arts market, and Reilly's one actionable solution to the predicament posed by the internet, among other things. All music in this episode by Reilly Smethurst: Inheritance (2019) Uterus (2016) Organised (2019) Angel (2018) During the interview, we mention the essay “Another Artworld” by Nika Dubrovsky and David Graeber. In 2005, Al Mohler wrote an article about the call to Christian maturity through triaging theological issues. As with prioritizing particular injuries and illnesses in a hospital, there's great need for ranking theological issues in order of importance within the church. At TGC21, Matt Smethurst moderates a panel with Al Mohler, Gavin Ortlund, and Afshin Ziafat as they discuss how to separate primary, secondary, and tertiary theological beliefs. Smethurst defines the three categories as follows:Primary doctrines are central to Christianity—things you have to agree on to be a Christian.Secondary doctrines separate churches and create denominations due to differing beliefs. These are things you must agree on in order to be church members in the same body.Last-order issues aren't definitional for any kind of confessional system, and they allow Christians to remain unified while holding their differing beliefs.Gavin Ortlund shares that love should always be the driving motivation in finding where one's church stands on theological beliefs. He says, “When we notice we are being too sectarian and fighting too much, it is helpful to ask if this is becoming a form of self-justification.” Ortlund reminds us we're saved by grace alone, through faith in Christ alone.Recommended resource: Finding the Right Hills to Die On: The Case for Theological Triage by Gavin Ortlund

Evidence for non-merger co-evolution of galaxies and their supermassive black holes by R. J. Smethurst et al. on Monday 28 November Recent observational and theoretical studies have suggested that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) grow mostly through non-merger (`secular') processes. Since galaxy mergers lead to dynamical bulge growth, the only way to observationally isolate non-merger growth is to study galaxies with low bulge-to-total mass ratio (e.g. B/T < 10%). However, bulge growth can also occur due to secular processes, such as disk instabilities, making disk-dominated selections a somewhat incomplete way to select merger-free systems. Here we use the Horizon-AGN simulation to select simulated galaxies which have not undergone a merger since z = 2, regardless of bulge mass, and investigate their location on typical black hole-galaxy scaling relations in comparison to galaxies with merger dominated histories. While the existence of these correlations has long been interpreted as co-evolution of galaxies and their SMBHs driven by galaxy mergers, we show here that they persist even in the absence of mergers. We find that the correlations between SMBH mass and both total mass and stellar velocity dispersion are independent of B/T ratio for both merger-free and merger-dominated galaxies. In addition, the bulge mass and SMBH mass correlation is still apparent for merger-free galaxies, the intercept for which is dependent on B/T. Galaxy mergers reduce the scatter around the scaling relations, with merger-free systems showing broader scatter. We show that for merger-free galaxies, the co-evolution is dominated by radio-mode feedback, and suggest that the long periods of time between galaxy mergers make an important contribution to the co-evolution between galaxies and SMBHs in all galaxies. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.13677v1

So this week I was joined by Dave and Franc to discuss Military applications of UAP tech, Wider paranormal phenomena and Entities. We delved into some more 'out there' hypotheses, in the spirit of keeping everything on the table for discussion and the conversation went to some very interesting places. Once again, I really enjoyed this discussion, hope you enjoy listening! You can find us on twitter - @UFOthinker @dsmethurst66 @FrancMilburn
So this week I was joined by Dave and Franc to discuss disinformation efforts within the UFO community, whistleblowers and secrecy. We will be doing a part two of this chat in the coming weeks too, where we delve into a couple of other topics we didn't have time for in this one. Excuse my slight lack of energy and hoarse voice, I've had a pretty nasty cold/flu type thing this last week but still wanted to get a show out for folks :) I really enjoyed this discussion, hope you enjoy listening! And here is the part 2 following on from the previous episode, I'd recommend listening to these in order for it to make sense. Hope you enjoy! Frank
So for this week I decided to do this in two parts as the overall thing was around 2 hours. The concept is a bit like the 5 quotes episode we did a little while ago; introduce a quote from a prominent figure in the UFO topic and discuss what is meant by it. Where is the line between direct knowledge and speculation? We spend a lot of time analysing breadcrumbs from insiders who have been on the other side of that 'curtain of secrecy', in this two part episode we break down these comments and try to get to the bottom of what is meant. The audio clips played are from our friends at Engaging the Phenomenon and Calling all Beings, the links to the full interviews can be found below, aswell as a press conference where some of the Christopher Mellon clips were taken from. Huge thankyou for letting us play the clips on the show and I'd definitely recommend checking out the full interviews if you found the clips interesting. All summer we have been profiling students transitioning from their 9th to their 10th grade years in the FFA. These interviews are a lot of fun to do because if I can ask just the right question I can tap into area of expertise that are already developed in these young students. Our guest today is Hayven Smethurst. She has a lot of involvement in the FFA. She joined because she thought it would help her to advocate for agriculture, and she took action. She did this by recruiting her friends, who are not involved in agriculture, to join the FFA with her. She believes through these efforts she can expose more people to agriculture and help to bring people into this industry to keep it going into the future. So far she has successfully recruited three people to join her chapter who otherwise would not have done that! In addition to her advocacy efforts Hayven loves animals and raises several different species at her home. She also works with dairy cattle on her grandparents dairy, and she shows dairy cattle for a nearby dairy with registered Holsteins. If fitting, training and showing 8 head of Holsteins in a summer were not enough, she also shows horses and keeps 8 of her own. When I started asking Hayven about showing horses and being successful in the arena, her knowledge and expertise really started to shine. She had a lot of great information for any future or current exhibitor who wants to show horses and has goals of improving their performance. Hayven's passion for the equine shone through in the interview so strongly that I titled the episode "how to succeed showing horses"! In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start - pay it forward. REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA: Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food. Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth. Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store: “The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America's youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America's youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”. Dave Smethurst is back again to discuss some further analysis of the historic congressional hearings on UFOs and speculate on whats coming next. It's been a historic event, the first hearings of this type in over 50 years, so I wanted to bring a range of opinions and analysis to the show. With Dave's broad knowledge of the topic, this is a perfect way to round of the hearing breakdowns and to think about where we go from here...
So in this episode I was joined by Dave Smethurst to discuss and speculate on 5 important quotes that have been delivered by prominent people within the UFO topic. Hope you enjoy!

Even though we have found Him and accept Him as our Lord and Saviour, the pursuit of God is still an evolving one. It’s a pursuit of understanding, a deeper relationship, dependence, surrender, and a pursuit of His heart for us, those around us, and the world. THE COST OF FOLLOWING CHRIST If I am to wholly follow the Lord Jesus Christ, I must forsake everything that is contrary to Him. - AW Tozer It would be very easy to look at the quote above and think, ‘that’s other people, not me’, but the truth of the matter is that we all are called to forsake all and to pick up our cross and follow Christ. That is the Christian life. It would be easy to focus our attention on ourselves, on all that we have lost or may lose on this journey as a result of our faith. However, as we reflect in our readings this week on the cost of following Christ, our goal is instead to shift our attention heavenward. To cultivate a heart that can see God’s big picture. A heart that longs and wants God above all so that the price we may pay to follow Him means nothing compared to the all-consuming love we have found in Him.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
