Rodney Marks was only 32, but he had already earned so much respect as an astrophysicist. And he took his work seriously, signing up for multiple long stints at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, run by the National Science Foundation. A job assignment like this one was not for the faint of heart as it required working more than half a year in darkness and in an environment of such extreme temperatures that even a plane couldn't land because its fuel would freeze. It also meant months of complete isolation from the outside world; so, when Rodney Marks fell ill, there were limited resources. When he died on May 12, 2000, it would be over five months before his body could be removed from the Antarctic continent and an autopsy performed. A full seven months after Marks passed away, autopsy results revealed the biggest shock of all—he had been poisoned. This week we are joined by Richard, co-host of both Private Dicks and Unethical podcasts. Scott speaks with Author Lenny Esposito and Astrophysicist and author Hugh Ross on their upcoming Dare to Defend conference. They discuss what is unique about this kind of event. Fox News' Tucker Carlson was granted exclusive access to more than 44,000 hours of Capitol surveillance footage by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. On Monday night Carlson released the first installment of his analysis of the tapes, telling viewers that the vast majority of the protestors who breached the Capitol on Jan. 6 were not insurrectionists but “orderly and meek” sightseers. Scott reacts to what has been released and takes calls from listeners wanting to react. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Brian Keating's book 'Losing the Nobel Prize' is a memoir about his scientific and personal journey. In one of his talks, he said, "searching for God was in a way searching for my father." He explains how being estranged from his father impacted his relationship with God. Raised Catholic by his stepfather, he spent a year as an altar boy, but his spiritual search eventually led him to becoming a Baal Teshuva. We discuss how Judaism requires one to ACT, not necessarily to BELIEVE. Discover how this particular fact about Judaism shaped who he is, why he returned to his roots after becoming an atheist, and how he reconciles the seeming tension between religion and science. Also, it seems that scientists are reverting to the Eternal Universe Model to avoid the implications of the Big Bang (via the Multiverse theory). Many scientists insist that if God were to exist, something MUST have created Him, yet they don't apply the same logic to the universe. In this sense, is science any different than dogmatic religion? On another note, he explains how space and time are related and why this is so fundamental. We also touch on the big question about mathematics: Is it hardwired into the fabric of the universe, or are we creating it to understand and navigate our world? Lastly, we ask the professor if he thinks aliens exist, which is always a fun topic. (His talks with Ben Shapiro, Lex Fridman, Avi Loeb, Dennis Prager, Eric Weinstein, and Neil Degrasse Tyson are available on all major platforms.) • Thank you to friend of the podcast Zev Gotkin of Zev Media for guest co-hosting this episode!
Avanti Tilak's career transition and relaunch from astrophysics and academia to corporate data science was a triumph after a long, frustrating period of setbacks. Avanti explains how she updated her skills, which freelance roles contributed to her progress, how she dealt with repeated rejection, and what ultimately led to her successful relaunch into the corporate world via IBM's Tech Re-Entry program. Two and a half years later, she was part of a layoff from IBM during the pandemic. This meant that Avanti, at this point an experienced healthcare data scientist, needed to look for a new job. Her next role was at a small innovative start-up. She is now at a traditional health insurance company. Avanti walks us through her entire career path during our conversation.
Astrophysicist and Jesuit priest Adam Hincks shares the value he's found in studying both the Bible and the Big Bang.
Does truth exist? If it does, is it possible to know the truth? That's what me and Dr. Amy Winebarger talked about as we discussed Action Painting II by Mark Tansey. Science and art are often seen as opposites—one concerned with numbers and facts, the other dipping into emotion and feelings. But both science and art are a way of exploring and explaining the world, the universe, and our experience of it all. Humans are curious. We've been seeking knowledge and attempting to share our own truths for as long as we've existed. No matter how we view the world, what matters most is the space between us and the connections we make there. Amy R. Winebarger is an astrophysicist in the Heliophysics and Planetary Science Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. She specializes in the analysis of observations of the solar corona. In our conversation, she shared the thrilling nature of her work, the magic of finding the career that's right for you, and talked about where she finds God in the universe. See all the artworks and get the links in the show notes.

On today's ID the Future, astrophysicist and intelligent design proponent Bijan Nemati shares the first part of his story of science and faith. Those who follow Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture may know Nemati from his appearance in the popular ID documentary The Privileged Planet. Born and raised in Iran, he moved to the United States shortly before the Iranian revolution, became an atheist in college, but eventually found his way to a strong religious faith, in part through his exposure to the scientific evidence for intelligent design, first in biology and then in cosmology. Along the way he landed a high-level job with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and became a leading expert in space interferometer telescopes Read More › Source
This week on The Cosmic Companion, we wrap up season six with a look at… SPACE: 2023. In the year 2023, a massive nuclear explosion will rip the Moon from its orbit, sending more than 300 inhabitants of a lunar colony careening into space. [No. No. That's not right.] Oh, yeah, ANYWAY!We are going to give you a look at what's happening in the night sky over the next 12 months, as well as looking forward to what's coming up on our show in the coming weeks. In January, we will take a glimpse at how 3D environments give us our best look yet at our future beyond the Earth. We will also imagine predators in space - what can animal hunters here on Earth teach us about possible predators on distant worlds? We'll be hunting down ideas with Shark week regular Paul de Gelder. On 28 January, we'll be discussing the history of diversity in space exploration, from its earliest days, up through the modern age and beyond, talking with Meredith Bagby, author of The New Guys. Check that out in episode four of our upcoming season, coming out 7 February. If that weren't enough, we'll be kicking February off with a new look at the amazing remastered images of the Apollo Project. We welcome NASA expert and historian Andy Saunders to the show, discussing his new work, Apollo Remastered. Here's a short clip from that interview.Join us starting on 4 February to watch the full interview with Andy Saunders, looking at Apollo to Artemis: Our Future on the Moon. Naturally, 2023 will feature the usual annular meteor showers, and the Moon is always going to be there. That is… unless a GIANT NUCLEAR EXPLOSION… But apart from that possibility, here's a look forward to the coming year in the night sky. On 20 April in the coming year, many amateur astronomers in the Southern Hemisphere will be treated to a hybrid solar eclipse. These events appear total in some areas, and partial in others, hence the name hybrid. This eclipse begins in the southern Indian Ocean, stretching toward western Australia and southern parts of Indonesia. People living on the islands of Indonesia and parts of Australia will be treated to a partial eclipse. [the kangaroos will enjoy it as well] (and, naturally, the kangaroos will enjoy it, as well). A penumbral lunar eclipse happening on 5 May will be seen over parts of eastern Europe and Africa, all of Asia, and Australia again. Our planetary companion, the Moon, comes in closer to Earth than average, producing a supermoon on 3 July. Another supermoon - this one also a blue moon - takes place on 31 August. On 14 October, as you're hanging Halloween decorations, an annular solar eclipse will develop in the Pacific Ocean west of southern Canada and spread toward the southwestern United States before moving into Central America and Brazil. Large swathes of North and South America will be treated to a partial eclipse from this event.Europe, Asia, Africa, and western Australia are going to see a partial lunar eclipse on 28 October - Halloween Weekend! [howl]If you enjoy The Cosmic Companion, also take a listen to our friends at Pale Blue Pod. This new podcast about space and astronomy, hosted by astrophysicist and folklorist Dr. Moiya McTier and comedian and science educator Corinne Caputo brings science to everyone with fun, lighthearted episodes.
