You can get your copy at davemartin.org"I have discovered that hard work is not the key to success. It is most certainly a factor but it is not thekey. Intelligence also does not determine success. Some of the most successful people are notnecessarily the most intelligent. The foundational key is vision. Vision undergirds a person's specialqualities and causes their strengths to work together in a way that can help them succeed." Dr. Dave Martin

A lifetime is filled with many experiences that become “pivot points” in a person’s destiny. Sometimes these “pivot points” can take a person down a pathway of blessing that he could never have imagined when he started the journey. But at other times, life can take a person down a highway that leads to disappointment and tragedy. That is why all of us need a second shot at life. In some area of your life, you need an opportunity to make something right that has gone wrong.
How's Your Sense of Timing? Think about all the wonderful things that have happened in your life. Think about the day you found your job or bought your house. Think about the day you met your husband, your wife, your boyfriend, or your girlfriend. To achieve your goals, you need to have a good sense of timing, and you need to understand how timing impacts your success or failure.
LIFE IS A CONTACT SPORT To be successful, a person must chase a prize that other people are chasing, too. And since there are multiple participants in this chase, yet only one prize, collisions are unavoidable and wounds are predictable. People will get severely injured in the “game” of life. Let's talk about how to make contact but be successful in the process!
Life requires balance. As you pursue your expertise in your chosen field of interest, don’t forget that life, like sports, is a test of many demands. A baseball player must be able to field the ball, throw the ball, run the bases, and swing a bat if he hopes to sign a big contract as a major-leaguer. And you must learn to balance your spiritual life, your family life, your work life, and your personal life if you hope to be a genuine success.
To do anything that the masses are not doing will require a commitment from you that will test you, stretch you, and at times come to close to “killing” you. But if you are blessed enough to be consumed with a passion for something that means more to you than life itself, you will find a way to finish your race. You will find a way to succeed with this strength of purpose.

“NO MAN IS AN ISLAND.” This famous saying dates back to the seventeenth century, but the thought that it conveys is as relevant today as it was when it was first written. No person can achieve anything meaningful in life without the contributions of other people. To succeed at reaching your goals, therefore, you must learn to appreciate the people God has placed in your life.
IT’S AMAZING HOW MANY SPORTS DEPEND ON POSITIONING. Basketball is an obvious example, because a player who gets loose for a shot beneath the basket is in a far better position than the player who is double-teamed at mid-court, and the player who is positioned for a rebound following a missed free throw is in a far better position than the player who is ten feet from the basket when the shot is missed.
If you were standing on a diving board, preparing to jump into the pool below, you would at least glance at the pool to make sure it was filled with water before making your dive. But it’s amazing how many people attempt great feats in life without investigating the risks and rewards associated with those ventures, and that is why so many people fail.
Courage is fear holding on a minute longer. —George S. Patton Have you ever noticed what really frightens you? Is there anything that really makes you stop in your tracks. shutting you down mentally? Most people have numerous fears, both identified and unidentified. It’s a miracle that we function at all sometimes. Download Now to listen o this full podcast
Timid athletes wait for opportunities; aggressive athletes make them. A “playmaker” in basketball is a player who is willing to take responsibility for the game and aggressively do all in his power to alter the outcome of the game. Playmakers are highly paid athletes who just don’t accept the other team’s defense or his own team’s failure to pull ahead as a reason to back off but rather they look at them as invitations to jump over or adeptly move around the court to achieve their goal which is to win. They don’t wait for someone else to do something. They are resolute and are willing to do whatever it takes.
THE POWER TO WIN MUST COME FROM WITHIN Confidence is an essential trait of a good rebounder, whether on the basketball court or in life. But determination is the core attribute that breeds confidence and the fundamental characteristic that produces results. For this reason, determination is the quality you need most in order to bounce back from your past failures or from the missteps that have taken you further from your goals.
All my life, I have been struck by the countless similarities between sports and life. Both sports and life require know-how, both demand talent and skill, and both can lead to glorious and fulfilling victories. However, sports and life are marked with obstacles and setbacks too, with mistakes and with crushing defeats. They are each marked with opposition, competition, and failure. And they offer us challenges, as well as opportunities to correct our mistakes and to rise above our failures. In athletic competition, there is always the next game or the next season. In a basketball game, there is always the chance to rebound a missed shot. And in life, we must create the same opportunities to turn failures into successes. We must keep “pounding the boards.” Today's episode is all about pounding the boards until we bounce back!
