Tricia Rose Burt had done everything right, according to the way she was raised. She went to a “good school,” had a “good job” and all seemed to be going great on the surface. But inside, she was miserable and decided to make a change. She left her career in public relations, took classes at art school, and began to explore her own creativity in a way that, as she describes it, “filled her cup.” She's never been happier, and in this Blue Sky conversation, she'll explain how listeners might want choose to tap into their “inner artist” as well. Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Tricia Rose Burt This chapter introduces Tricia Rose Burt, highlighting her journey from a conventional upbringing to a fulfilling creative career. It sets the stage for her story of transformation and how she helps others find their own path. 02:22 Overcoming Prescribed Paths Tricia discusses her upbringing in Tampa, Florida, where there was a ‘right way' to do things, leading her to feel miserable despite doing everything ‘correctly.' 05:04 The Art School Transformation Tricia shares how she transitioned from a career in public relations, which she disliked, to art school. A career counselor's advice and an initial art class led to a complete career and life change, reigniting a childhood spark for creativity. 08:05 Focusing on Process, Not Outcomes Tricia explains her current philosophy of focusing on the creative process rather than the outcome, a challenge for someone raised in an ‘overachieving household.' 12:36 No Time to Be Timid: Podcast Tricia discusses her podcast, ‘No Time to Be Timid,' and its message about embracing courage at any age. She emphasizes the pain of an uncreative life and encourages listeners to overcome obstacles to pursue their passions. 16:47 Integrating Creativity and Life Tricia advises listeners to integrate creativity into their daily lives rather than making drastic changes, sharing her own ‘dramatic' pivot to Ireland. She highlights the importance of a low overhead and finding joy in the creative process, contrasting it with exhausting unfulfilling work. 23:01 The Riskiest Thing: Playing It Safe Tricia introduces her ‘No Time to Be Timid' manifesto, starting with ‘The riskiest thing you can do is play it safe.' 25:54 Non-Linear Paths and Creativity's Value Tricia discusses the non-linear nature of life paths and how it allows for following curiosity, a contrast to her father's single career. She stresses that creativity is not frivolous, but essential for problem-solving and leading a fulfilling life, challenging the societal undervaluation of creative pursuits. 28:45 Constraints as Opportunities Tricia elaborates on ‘constraints are opportunities,' sharing how financial limitations in Ireland led her to create art from unconventional materials like tea bags. She provides examples of how constraints, whether financial or time-based, can spark creativity and innovation. 35:03 Embracing Failure for Growth Tricia discusses ‘failure is your friend,' explaining that setbacks offer valuable learning experiences and redirect paths. She shares a friend's perspective that ‘no' can be as good as ‘yes' and emphasizes asking ‘what happens if I do this?' in the creative process. 38:45 Courage in Community Tricia highlights the importance of ‘courage in community,' noting that fellow pilgrims provide support and understanding for creative individuals. 41:50 Make Art Now: The Power of Story Tricia passionately advocates for ‘make art now,' asserting that art and stories are vital for human connection, empathy, and overcoming demonization. She emphasizes that creativity isn't limited to ‘big A' art but encompasses everyday acts of making and connecting.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.globaldispatches.orgThe United States this week pulled the plug on UNIFIL, the decades-old UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon. Every other member of the Security Council—and Lebanon itself—wanted it to stay. But Israel has long bristled at the mission, and Washington was happy to do its regional ally a favor. At another Council meeting, the U.S. stood completely alone — literally — in denying that famine is underway in Gaza. And in the Guardian, former top UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths blasted a lack of “courage” at the UN. Was that a veiled jab at his old boss, António Guterres?Mark and Anjali break it all down and more in this episode of the smash hit podcast To Save Us From Hell — which really does have a cult following at the UN these days! Paul leaves Timothy in Ephesus to deal with some issues in the church at Ephesus. He is a young man who is timid so Paul will tell him not to let that be a deterrent to what he is called to do. Before diving in to what instructions Paul gives Timothy for the church at Ephesus, we take a deep dive into the book of Ephesians to explore what some issues the church had, along with what Jesus had to say about the church in Revelation 2. There isn't a perfect church because there aren't any perfect people, so the church is full of imperfect people, or what people in the world call “hypocrites”. We are all sinners in need of salvation, grace, and mercy, and thought the church is full of imperfect people, it's still the body of Christ and together, we strive to be more like him every day! Shyness is used to mean shyness, and generally shyness means excessive self-concern and fear of communicating and facing others. In fact, someone who is known to be shy pays excessive attention to their actions and behaviour, and this thinking makes them not put themselves in the challenge of facing others. Shy people tend to be more withdrawn and isolated, and they feel lonely in groups of people, especially strangers. Being shy and embarrassed is one of the biggest problems that can disrupt a person's normal life.

Starting Over with a Creative Life featuring Nell PainterIn this episode, we talk to the renowned historian and bestselling author Nell Painter, who left her wildly successful academic career to enter art school at the age of 65 — an experience she documented in her book, Old in Art School, A Memoir of Starting Over, which was named a National Book Critics Circle finalist. We talk about working with constraints, overcoming unfair criticism, healthy creative addictions like yarn and ink, and we even talk about the role of women without children. At 82, Nell shows no signs of slowing down. It's an episode you don't want to miss. Takeaways: Age should never be a barrier to creativity.Role models can play a big part in your creative journey, especially for women. You shouldn't listen to other people's views of yourself; it's what you think about yourself that matters.Constraints are opportunities, which is a big part of the No Time to be Timid manifesto. The adverts are not chosen by us, but played automatically depending on the platform you listen through (Apple Podacsts, Spotify, etc) and the country you live in. The adverts may even be different if you listen to the story twice. We have had a handful of instances where an advert has played that is not suitable for a family audience, despite the podcast clearly being labelled for children. If you're concerned about an advert you hear, please contact the platform you are listening to directly. Spotify, in particular, has proven problematic in the past, for both inappropriate adverts and the volume at which the adverts play. If you find this happening, please let Spotify know via their Facebook customer care page. As creators, we want your child's experience to be a pleasurable one. Running adverts is necessary to allow us to operate, but please do consider the premium subscription service as an alternative – it's advert free.

Happy New Year and welcome to the first episode of Own It for 2025! This week we're talking to Alona Lisa of Far From Timid. There are few people we talk to as diverse and fascinating as her background suggests. She paints, runs, plays basketball and writes. She's a blockchain and metaverse thought leader. She's worked on both the brand side with IBM and Marriott, and on the agency side with Razorfish, Gray and more before founding Far From Timid in 2019. As you might imagine, her journey, her influences and her perspective on our industry was quite colorful and interesting. I can't wait for you to dig into this one. Hey Dog Lover! I'm super excited to share the mic with my daughter Paisley for this episode! We're diving into a big question sparking debate in the dog training world: Why are dogs so timid these days? Paisley takes us back to simpler times, sharing what it was like growing up with dogs and how attitudes toward them have changed over the years. And, we explore the finger-pointing and blame game happening in dog trainer forums—bad breeders, the "rescue all" mentality, and, of course, YOU, the dog lover. But here's the thing: I believe the real issue runs deeper. From polarized trainer advice to owners feeling lost and overwhelmed, we unpack how today's dog training culture may be creating more confusion than solutions.

Plus, Why Liz Cheney's active endorsement of Kamala Harris really does matter
Donald Trump and J.D. Vance have doubled down on false claims that immigrants in Springfield, Ohio are eating pets. Over the weekend, Vance said on CNN that he was willing "to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people." In an era of misinformation, how should the media be covering claims like these? And are political journalists doing enough to hold Trump, Vance and even Kamala Harris accountable? Scott talks with Dan Froomkin, who founded presswatchers.org, an independent non-profit site devoted to political journalism. They analyze this year's media coverage of the presidential election and what political journalists can and should do better to ensure that the electorate has an accurate sense of the candidates and the stakes in this election. Newt Gingrich. The New Space Race – United States vs. China Newt talks with Dr. Greg Autry, author of "Red Moon Rising: How America Will Beat China on the Final Frontier". They discuss the new space race between the United States and China, with the moon as the ultimate high ground. Autry highlights the vast lunar resources that could determine the quality of life on earth in the future. He also discusses the potential of space for manufacturing and medical advancements, such as growing stem cells and creating pharmaceuticals in zero gravity. However, Autry expresses concern about the United States' ability to beat China to the moon, citing a lack of top-level support in the current administration for the space program. Newt's World May 12 2024 Other Episodes About the book: Red Moon Rising: How America Will Beat China on the Final Frontier – April 30, 2024 by Greg Autry (Author), Peter Navarro (Author), Douglas Loverro (Foreword) 5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 10 ratings See all formats and editions 100+ bought or read in past month Space Race 2.0 has started, and the winner—America or Communist China—will define the future of humanity. The space race was a critical determining factor in the Cold War. After its Sputnik miracle, the Soviets' loss of the race to the Moon undermined the international mystique of Communism and crushed the USSR's dreams of world domination. America's wildly successful Apollo program, by sharp contrast, brought America global glory and prestige—along with a plethora of “miracle technologies” that accelerated economic growth and strengthened US national security for half a century. We are now embroiled with a brutal and autocratic Communist China in a new cold war and second, far more consequential, race to the Moon—whichever country seizes the commanding heights of the moon will have preferential access to vast lunar resources that will determine the quality of life on Earth and the political and moral character of the human diaspora as it advances into the solar system. America should win Space Race 2.0 and is leading an international and commercial coalition to do so. Yet, Communist China is giving no ground even as its rockets soar above us. The clear risk: Timid and visionless policy makers in the White House and Congress may well surrender the ultimate high ground to the butchers of Beijing. Greg Autry and Peter Navarro have been warning of this competition for more than a decade. Both were influential in the construction of America's triumphant space agenda during the Trump administration. In this book, they take you through the technology, economics, and history of this important topic and provide policy recommendations that will win the Space Race for America. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Order Newt's Latest Book: March to the Majority: The Real Story of the Republican Revolution!
