Zigler: Zig NIFs for Elixir with Isaac Yonemoto

In the Season 14 premiere, hosts Dan Ivovich and Sundi Myint chat with Isaac Yonemoto, creator of the Zigler library, to explore how Zigler brings Zig's performance and safety to Elixir through Native Implemented Functions (NIFs). Isaac walks through the core design of Zigler and how it auto-generates the Elixir-to-Zig bridge, enforces type safety, and exposes multiple execution modes (normal, dirty, threaded). The conversation covers real-world applications, from SIMD-powered token selection for LLM hardware acceleration to OTP-style fault tolerance in low-level code. Isaac shares his own journey: stepping back from professional software work to launch a biotech startup focused on reducing drug manufacturing costs while continuing to maintain Zigler and even leveraging Elixir for bioinformatics pipelines. Topics discussed in this episode: What is the Zigler library and what does it do? What does it mean to run a "dirty NIF"? Async mode is temporarily removed from Zig (therefore, yielding NIFs is temporarily deprecated in Zigler) Zigler's three execution modes (normal, dirty, and threaded) and how you switch modes with a single config change Isaac's journey from professional software work to launching a biotech startup How Isaac leverages Elixir in bioinformatics pipelines at his startup LLM hardware acceleration using Zigler NIFs and SIMD-powered token picking Fault-tolerant load balancing of NIF workloads via OTP principles Transparent handling and recovery from hardware failures through monitoring Potential future memory-safety features in Zig and their implications The Elixir-based borrow-checker prototype: purpose and design Unit-checking for scientific computations to enforce correctness New OS support in Zigler 0.14: macOS, Windows, and FreeBSD Inline Zig code authoring directly within Elixir modules Isaac's commitment to maintain Zigler through its 1.0 release (...and beyond?) This episode of Ambition Today is supported by: Finta, The Capital Copilot  In October 2024, Finta hosted a panel for LA Tech Week called “How I Raised - Seed, Series A, Series B.” Featuring founders exploringthe unique challenges and insights of securing capital at different stages of their company. Our incredible panel for this event consists of: David Kervin‍ Proteus Space ($8M Raised) - Revolutionizing satellite design with AI-driven platforms, aiming to reduce the time and cost of deploying satellites through automation and cutting-edge technology. Gaurav Bhattacharya Jeeva ($16M Raised) - Harness AI-driven customer intelligence, helping companies optimize their customer experience and reduce churn through actionable insights. Scott Wayman Kangarootime ($37.5M Raised) - A leading innovator in the childcare management software industry, Kangarootime has risen to the forefront, providing vital solutions for daycares and preschools.   Key Fundraising Insights From This Episode: 1. Getting Investor Buy-In: Confidence Over Convincing Founders emphasized that successful fundraising begins with confidence, not just pitching facts. Believing in your mission sets the tone for investor meetings, as confidence drives a stronger, more resonant narrative. ‍ 2. Parallel vs. Sequential Fundraising Processes Gaurav shared that sequential meetings can be a trap, leading to prolonged efforts. Instead, structuring outreach as a concentrated, parallel push creates urgency and FOMO among investors, leading to quicker commitments. ‍ 3. Navigating Round Dynamics with Clear Milestones For each funding stage, specific milestones are critical. Scott noted that Series B investors expect well-established product-market fit and sales efficiency, while Series A focuses on validating product intent. Seed rounds, by contrast, require strong founder conviction and a scrappy dedication. ‍ 4. Leveraging Warm Intros for Better Outcomes Cold outreach has a low conversion rate. David and Gaurav underscored the importance of warm intros, building relationships long before “the ask,” as connections formed early often convert to funding opportunities. ‍ 5. Pitfalls in Equity Structure and Term Negotiations Gaurav and Scott highlighted the importance of a clean cap table and an informed approach to term sheets, particularly for liquidation preferences and convertible notes, which can heavily dilute founder control if unchecked. ‍ 6. Evolving Pitch Focus: Metrics Over Mission at Later Stages With each funding stage, the pitch shifts. For Series B, Scott mentioned that metrics and market dynamics become critical to justify high-value funding rounds, moving beyond storytelling toward quantifiable business growth. ‍ 7. The Role of Timing and Market Trends Market trends, such as the rise of AI, can be powerful, but founders caution to present technology realistically. David shared that aligning milestones with tech waves and managing investor perceptions is essential for positioning within emerging sectors. ‍ 8. Finding the Balance in Deal Terms and Equity Retention David noted that while SAFE notes and convertible debt can expedite early funding, they can also lead to significant dilution. Founders should prioritize understanding term sheets and use cap table modeling tools like Carta to project long-term equity impacts. ‍ 9. Building and Utilizing Investor Relationships Over Time David emphasized the value of maintaining relationships with VCs who may not invest immediately. Regular updates and casual interactions allow investors to track your progress and feel more comfortable when it's time to commit. ‍ 10. Strategic Use of Milestones to Drive Up Valuation Meeting critical operational or revenue milestones before the next round can significantly enhance valuation and interest. Scott's journey highlighted that proving product-market fit and high sales efficiency before Series B can allow for strong, valuation-focused negotiations. ‍ 11. Positioning Within Tech Waves for Strategic Advantage Each wave of technology (e.g., AI, blockchain) offers a unique angle for storytelling and market positioning. Scott and Gaurav recommended founders lean into tech trends authentically, showcasing how the wave aligns with their product rather than simply following hype. ‍ Hosting this event was a blast! In Episode 22 of The Steak Lad Experience, I had a very intriguing discussion with Wilton Zigler. Wilton is a former professional MMA fighter based in California, who in early 2023 established “@the_carnivore_lifestyle” Instagram page to highlight the positive impact the Carnivore Diet was having on his life. Throughout our discussion we spoke about his early childhood/family life, the motivation as to why he started his page, his advice for anyone second guessing the Carnivore Diet, the positive impact he has had on those around him as a result of his platform and much more. Myself and Wilton have been connected on Instagram for a few months now so it was a real treat sitting down with him (on his first ever podcast) and I am looking forward to the day we can do one in person!!! The trajectory he is on is exciting for me personally and I look forward to witnessing the progression of his goal towards informing people around the world the life changing impact of the Carnivore Diet. Hear from 3 different sides of the table when we gather an investor, founder, and a lawyer to discuss what fundraising venture capital in 2024. Our incredible panel for this event consists of: The Founder ‍David Silverstein, is the CEO of Ned, a white label lending platform that makes it easy for lenders to effortlessly deploy capital. The Investor Rachel ten Brink, General Partner at Red Bike Capital, an early-stage VC fund based in New York, specializing in SaaS, Health & Wellness, and Fintech sectors in the U.S. With over 30 years of experience, including founding a Y Combinator-backed startup that reached $100M in revenue and managing $2B in assets. The Lawyer Jack Sousa, is the Partner & Co-Chair of the Emerging Companies and Venture Capital Practice Group at Wiggin. He is also a wiggin(x) Co-Founder and Partner. Jack focuses his practice on venture capital, startup and early-stage companies and their financing needs.   Key Fundraising Insights From This Episode: How Should Founders Think About Fundraising David Silverstein kicked off the event emphasizes the importance of focus during a raise. Trying to shrink the amount of time you spend fundraising so you can get back to building the business. Highlighting the importance of relationship building in fundraising, while de-risking and hitting the right milestones to build trust with investors. Rachel ten Brink advises founders to start planning their next round of funding as soon as they close their current round. She emphasizes the need to reverse-engineer the process, understanding how far the current funds will take the company and what metrics need to be hit for the next raise. AI's Influence On Startups AI will fundamentally transform the venture capital landscape. Rachel notes that AI is not just a sector but a foundational technology that will touch every industry. David adds that while AI is important, it is crucial to solve fundamental business problems first. VC Investor Relations with LP's Rachel discusses the current trends in VC strategies and the importance of understanding the dynamics between VC funds and their LPs. She highlights the necessity for founders to be aware of the financial health and commitments of the VCs they are pitching to. Current Market Trends and Company Valuations The discussion centers around the importance of always being prepared to fundraise and understanding market dynamics. David stresses the situational nature of fundraising, advising founders to be ready to adapt to market conditions. Important Fundraising Legal Considerations Jack Sousa recommends involving a lawyer early in the fundraising process to navigate complex legal terms and agreements. He mentions the return of redemption provisions and full ratchet anti-dilution clauses as trends to watch. How Can Founder's Stand Out To Investors To stand out, David suggests focusing on demonstrating real customer traction and needs. Rachel emphasizes the importance of clear, concise pitch decks and consistent communication with investors. Strong Investor Communication Balancing warm introductions and cold outreach is crucial. David recommends building relationships with investors before needing to raise funds, while Rachel highlights the importance of thoughtful signaling and avoiding desperate outreach. Practical Tips for Founders Jack Sousa and Rachel discuss essential legal terms, noting the increasing prevalence of liquidation preferences and full ratchet anti-dilution clauses. They advise founders to keep their cap tables clean and to be aware of the long-term implications of their fundraising choices. Industry-Specific Insights Raising funds for deep tech ventures involves unique challenges compared to traditional SaaS startups. Rachel and David emphasize the importance of understanding sector-specific milestones and investor expectations. The End of Software...? The panel debates whether the software market has matured. Rachel argues that while the market is evolving, there is still significant upside potential for innovative software solutions, particularly those integrating AI. Matt Zigler is a teacher, artist, and maker. He is currently the Bullis Innovation and Technology Lab (BITlab) Coordinator at Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, where he works with students and teachers to bring design thinking and the Maker process into traditional content area classes, teach Maker related classes, and oversees a state of the art Makerspace and Fab Lab. Matt has presented on how to design and build a Makerspace that meets the needs of specific schools, how to create a culture of Making and innovation, and how to develop Maker programming for all levels of ability, K-12. The Maker movement has been an excellent opportunity for people to become producers rather than just consumers, and schools are recognizing the value of offering students the tools, materials, and skills necessary to design sophisticated and meaningful projects. But teaching technical skills should not be the end goal: At its best, a Maker education teaches students to think and act in creative ways that can be applied to difficult challenges in all areas of life. Matt's book Three Modes of Making (release date Dec 23/Jan 24) provides a framework for Maker courses in upper grades that teach students creative-process skills through three key Maker modes: Imitation, Modification, and Innovation. On this episode, we discuss the three Maker modes and their associated skill sets  to provide educators with ideas for helping students be creatively purposeful.Matt's class also created The Wheelchair Stroller project, and his students ended up all over the news, including NBC Washington and the CBS Evening News!Listen to more ideas from Matt on Ep 211Connect with Matt:Website mattzigler.comTwitter @BullisBITlabMedium medium.com/@matthewziglerChris Woods is the host of the STEM Everyday Podcast... Nearly 75 years ago, on May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed Israel's sovereignty: a renewed Jewish state, the political expression of the national home of the Jewish people, located in their ancestral homeland. Many essays and books have been published about the words Ben-Gurion spoke that day—Israel's Declaration of Independence. But the professor Neil Rogachevsky and his co-author Dov Zigler take a new angle on the declaration and what it means. In a new book from Cambridge University Press, Israel's Declaration of Independence: The History and Political Theory of the Nation's Founding Moment, they look at the drafting process and distill from the elements that endured from draft to draft—as well as the elements that were changed or removed—a political theory of Israel's founding, in which the political purposes of the Israeli project are made most clearly manifest. How, in other words, did Israel's founders think about rights, about citizenship, about the justifications of Israel's sovereignty, an Israeli view of freedom, of civil order, and of religion? That's the subject of their new book—and the subject of the conversation they have here with Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

On this episode of A Dose Of Positivity, I sat down with my dear friend Daniel Zigler. Dan is an identical twin, who was born and raised in Canebrake, California (population 50). Dan worked as a ranch hand at 12 years old. After graduating high school he got an Associates Degree from Bakersfield College. In 2006 Dan suffered a broken neck which nearly ended his life. Dan decided not to get surgery and wore a Halo for six months hoping his neck would heal naturally. Unfortunately the Halo didn't set Dan's neck correctly so he had to get fusion surgery to repair his neck. After the surgery the doctors didn't give Dan much of a chance to live a normal life ever again. Doctors actually told Dan he wouldn't be able to lift 20 pounds. Two years after his surgery Dan was able to lift over 120 pounds over his head. Dan went on to win multiple competitions as a natural athlete. Winning the Natural Olympia in the Men's Physique category twice. This episode is packed full of inspiration and motivation.

Sometimes, it takes slamming our forehead to realize we were pushing on a pull door. We can be harsh on ourselves for not noticing the "pull" sign, or we can be compassionate, perhaps be more alert for clues next time, and leave that moment behind us, right next to the embarrassment we just felt.Today, the amazing Jake Carlson joins us to talk about inspirational leadership, the courage needed to choose differently and its benefits, self-compassion, and the importance of creating core memories with our families.Jake is a father of three, a husband, a speaker, writer and mentor, and host of the Modern Leadership podcast. We delve into the recently coined by ourselves term, "ROIT," Return On Invested Time, the importance of taking a step back from our crazy routines to create core memories with our children and wife, and why we shouldn't be harsh with ourselves when we fail.Jake also talks about the different outcomes we can expect from focusing on improving our strengths and weaknesses; he shares an incredibly original top action step and much more. Some Questions I Ask:Please tell us a little bit more about your story.
