An axiom we live by is “prescription before diagnosis equals malpractice.” We take time upfront to work closely with all of our healthcare workers and find what suits them best as they progress in their careers — and this requires much more than a simple pre-screen. “Tip of the iceberg” questions only do so much, which is why we developed The Caregiver Diagnostic — a tool that allows us to partner with our healthcare professionals, create best case scenarios for potential assignments, and create a quality relationship going forward. listen on apple podcasts

Working with a recruiter at Spire is different than you'd expect. Sure — you'd expect us to say something specifically focused on how unique we are, but rather than explain our values we wanted to share a conversation between one of our recruiters, Matt, and Amber Wilson — a travel nurse. You'll hear from the get-go that the rapport they've built over the years is strong. They have more than a transactional, working connection. Here's Amber and Matt.
In this episode, Mike Jacoutot talks through some of the pros and cons of internal nursing contracts and a few things to consider for new travelers exploring the idea of working with an outside agency -- or working directly with a hospital's agency team.
Thank you, Nurses! A message from Spire's Managing Director, Mike Jacoutot, for Nurse Appreciation Week 2023.
In this episode, Mike Jacoutot talks through some of the pros and cons of internal nursing contracts and a few things to consider for new travelers exploring the idea of working with an outside agency -- or working directly with a hospital's agency team.
We have our sights set on a post-COVID world and the outlook for Travel Healthcare is continuing to evolve. We're seeing changing atmospheres and landscapes with hospitals across the country and travelers, both local and true traveler, are experiencing a constant shift in pay, opportunities, and demand. Here are a few of the things we cover in this episode: The outlook for Travel Healthcare in 2023 * We're seeing a lot of tech incorporated into how nurses are engaging with job opportunities. Essentially, we're seeing more “self-service” style hiring scenarios. * Plus, there are over 200,000 job openings for nurses across the country. Closing this gap is the key. Will tech replace agencies and recruiters? * The simple answer? It's hard to say yes — at least indefinitely. We still need to reduce the friction in how nurses get hired. Reducing the friction in nurses getting hired is still the focus. * Agencies have to evolve with the current paradigm — and it all comes down to serving the traveler first and foremost. Thinking of starting a Travel Healthcare career? * One of the best things to do in setting up yourself up for a great career as a traveler is cross-training into different specialties. The more in-demand a nurse can be based on their skillset, the better care they can provide based on growing needs.
If you're considering taking the next steps in Travel Nursing, there are a few things you should ask yourself. The time may be right for a career change, but your approach matters in how you map out your career, which agency you work with, and what a recruiter should be doing for you. All of these are practical steps, but the most important and personal aspect of jumping into a career as a traveler is aligning your goals. Are you looking for new experience and specialties? Want to see new places? Higher pay?Make sure you can match your goals (at least parts of your goals) to the outset of your travel nursing career journey.
Welcome back to the Spirecast. We're back with more content specifically focused on the healthcare traveler. For this episode, Mike, Spire's Managing Director, and Matt, our Recruiting Director, discuss the current status and future of the travel healthcare industry.
For this episode, we're joined by Michelle Freitag from TravCon- The Healthcare Travel Conference. This will be Spire's first time attending as an exhibitor, so we caught up with Michelle to hear about everything planned for attendees, exhibitors, sessions, and more.
Working with a recruiter at Spire is different than you'd expect. When you're working with a recruiter, you may find yourself wondering, “Does this person actually understand my background and career?” Seeking to understand is one of our core values at Spire — not just finding the best role for our travelers, but seeking out opportunities that will continue to foster growth potential. Thus, meet Shannon Perry - BSN, RN and a Healthcare Recruiter here at Spire. Shannon's approach to working with Travel Nurses is a little different… mainly due to the fact that she was a nurse herself.
Life on the road is exciting, full of new experiences, and always filled with memories. However, normal life (or at least the life you know at “Home) is sometimes difficult to replicate when you're spending an inordinate amount of time on an airplane, in a hotel, and so on. One of the biggest struggles, for us as travel nurses, is our focus on health, exercise, and consistent focus on our wellbeing. There's good news, though — Focusing on the right things and taking small steps will point you in the right direction for managing your health when you're onto your next travel nursing assignment. Here are 6 tips for being your healthiest self when you travel from one of our recruiters — Dan Dugan.

Remote Work. The ultimate. The aspect of a career or company that every millennial looks for and only hopes to achieve at some point. Though, much like every position out there, you're held to practicing good communication, hitting deadlines, there are metrics to keep in mind, and much more. Naturally there are pros and cons, though it should boil down to one question: Are you a good fit for remote work?
Welcoming back Kasey Farriba (CPRW) to The Spirecast for Part 2 of our conversation on working with a resume writer.First, when is the right time to give someone like Kasey a call and how do you get your resume in fighting shape for the next step in your career? Mike and Kasey talk through a few of those details.Secondly, be sure to listen to the end for a few rapid fire questions we all have come across at some point.
So, we've spent a considerable amount of time in our first season of the podcast on how to work with recruiters, how to present yourself, how to interview, and so on.But, how do you give yourself, or your resume and LinkedIn profile, a boost?Welcome, Kasey Farriba (CPRW) to The Spirecast. Kasey has experience in the recruiting world and is also the co-founder of HireGuide — a company providing resume-writing solutions, profile development, and coaching. She and Mike connected to cover details on how a resume writer approaches working with people.
Your resume, or CV, is your story as a professional — on paper. More than likely you've had a resume that reads relatively straightforward — like a bulleted list of what you did at each company and for how long. But what are recruiters, hiring managers, and companies with growth actually looking for on a candidates resume that makes them take pause? What are the things that will make you memorable?
Recruiters are looking for a number of things when they are sourcing candidates for specific roles. There's obviously a secret sauce to make sure you get into EVERY search, right? Now, getting into the mind of your recruiter may seem like the overall best thing you could do as a candidate. However, the approach may be a bit more based on pragmatism than one would think.Mike and Matt sat down to talk through some of the basics of how they look through the background of an individual.
In the previous episode of The Spirecast, Mike and Bryan defined what non-competes are and a handful of things that define their presence in your professional life. However, there are always questions about how to handle one of these agreements and navigating more of their nuance. Bryan came back in to fill in the details.Note: In NO WAY is this podcast or its guests meant to represent legal council or advice. Should you be in a position where you would like to seek legal advice on this subject, please seek legal council of your own.
Non-Competes. What exactly is this document or required paperwork? Often required by an employer at the time of hire or at some point during your tenure. Questions often arise about existing non-competes as candidates seek new employment and what do when this comes into play throughout an individual's career. We brought in Bryan Jacoutot, a licensed attorney in the state of Georgia, to speak with Mike a bit further on what makes up a non-compete agreement, how they function, and a few other lesser-known details.Note: In NO WAY is this podcast or its guests meant to represent legal council or advice. Should you be in a position where you would like to seek legal advice on this subject, please seek legal council of your own.
Artificial Intelligence, or A.I., is something that many companies have considered and/or implemented in many aspects of business.Rising technology and the ever-present need to work faster, keep costs down, and continually pursue a higher degree of work has introduced multiple avenues of the automation in our line of work. Will A.I. ever replace a human recruiter? Here's Mike with a few thoughts.
In the age of companies moving more towards decentralized teams, remote offices, digital capability, and so on, video interviewing is becoming a far more prevalent option when it comes to sourcing candidates. We see hosts of companies adding video into the process for sourcing potential employees though, much like all things new, it's not always a “perfect” experience.Perfect example: Have you interviewed a candidate over video and they happen to be in a messy bedroom or noisy coffee shop?Mike and Matt have some thoughts on the matter — Pros and Cons.
Leaving a big company can sound like somewhat of a Cinderella story. You work for a large outfit and make your way into the startup world and make a big difference, right? Well, it comes with quite a bit of tradeoff that you may not think of from the start.Spire's founder, Mike, has an interesting perspective from working for a large company with a national footprint to start something new.
This week, we're re-airing a conversation Matt and Mike had about how Spire came to be. It all comes back to how much we invest in our entire team. Earlier this week, we posted a blog that tells the story of one of our recruiters — Sam Cochran. Like all of us, Sam is in pursuit of work/life balance, but there's something remarkable — she's really found it. On top of being top recruiter of the month in May 2019 she is also a mother of one, soon to be two, and she works out of our Kansas City field office.
So, we're bringing you a short episode this week, but it's a grand story. Sometimes in the recruiting world you go to great lengths to get the job done — let alone get in contact with the right candidate. Here's Matt with an incredible story.
We're on to part two here and this time we're looking at things from the candidate's perspective. You have to make sure your recruiter truly has your best interest in mind — Did they find you because you're a great match for a role? Why are they calling? Are they asking detailed questions and explaining the role? You have to know how to vet a recruiter from your side as a potential hire. This rounds out our two-parter, but be on the lookout for an accompanying blog post where Mike and Matt give more perspective on working with the right recruiter.
So, we're bringing you a two-parter here. Mike and Matt talk about all things regarding recruiters. Sourcing a recruiter that fits the brand and becomes a true extension of your brand, brings service after they've placed a candidate, and one that stays connected takes time to find.
