Gabrielle has been a figure of calmness, inspiration, and hope for many people. Being diagnosed with cancer at the young age of 19 years old, her journey from "survivor to thriver" saw many evolutions. We discuss being endowed with an unheralded amount of wisdom, experience, and perspective, while not always finding it easy to apply; the loneliness of an invisible disability, particularly when we don't “look the part;” and, discover what happens when the lessons we gain differ from what society says we ought to have learned. You can listen to episodes of Gabrielle's podcast, Soar Above Cancer wherever you get your podcasts. If you enjoyed this episode, please take a moment to rate us and leave a review at Apple Podcast, or share this episode with a friend. Shame and stigma can be powerful forces, and Alex is on a mission to confront them in his life. We talk about his experience attending an all-boys Catholic high school, the confusion of trying to date women, and wondering, “what’s wrong with me,” and finally in his 20’s more fully embracing his sexual orientation as a gay man. Alex talks about his journey to becoming a psychologist, and wonders whether focusing on others was a subconscious way to shift the focus away from himself. Finally, we discuss being socialized in female dominated professions, and the inadvertent challenges, ironically, of working with men.You can connect with Alex online at:https://www.cbtassociates.com/cbt-associates-team/dr-alexander-r-daros/https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/therapists/alexander-r-daros-toronto-on/721031If you enjoyed this episode, please take a moment to rate us and leave a review at Apple Podcast, or share this episode with a friend. There’s no question that the theme of loss has permeated throughout Tanya’s life: the loss of innocence, the loss of ideal family relationships, the loss of health… And while that shone through in our conversation, what stood out MOST is her unbelievable resilience and tenacity. Tanya talks about the confusion and loneliness of being a child witnessing domestic violence, and exposits the questions that children can ask themselves: Am I somehow responsible? Am I doing enough? These questions have lingered for some time, however, when her daughter was diagnosed with a rare health condition, she was forced to confront them in a new context. Tanya describes how she learned to not blame herself for things that are out of her control, and that accepting the problem is not the same as being OK with it.Tanya runs a successful private practice in Kitchener, Ontario, and has over 20 years of experience in the mental health field. Who am I outside of the therapy room, and why can’t I turn my brain off? We discuss working in a profession that beckons us to keep it together, and then needing a place to let it all out. Alison touches upon a family history of mental illness, and what she refers to a Capital “D” and Lower Case “D” depression. We also share our own “going to a therapist” horror stories and the lengths we go to not repeat them with our clients. Alison is the owner of Maratos Counselling and Consulting Services, in Brantford, Ontario. Abby is the self-proclaimed “World’s Okayest Therapist,” at least that’s what her t-shirt says. As such, she is constantly meeting pressure head-on with humour and a healthy dose of reality. We sit down to talk about the many “flavours” of shame and how it can be a barometer at times to gauge burnout and stress. Abby discusses growing up with refugee parents who lived in the shadows of the Holocaust, and how “fixing the problem” became her source of validation from an early age. Finally, being diagnosed late in life with ADHD, she debunks the well intentioned, but often-misguided expression, “You’re just not trying hard enough.”Abby is the co-owner and clinical director of The Healing Collective in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is currently taking new referrals in her private practice. Candice does it all… she’s a mother, a therapist, and an entrepreneur, seemingly finding time for everyone and everything, even, herself? Candice talks about the notion of not having enough time to not be okay; feeling like an “outsider” throughout her life, and how this may have contributed to a strong sense of independence. Sometimes being overly independent, however, had the unintentional consequence of pushing people away. Together we reflect on her personal journey, discuss unusual techniques to enhance memory, and touch upon the surprising similarities between sex therapy and play therapy.Candice is the owner of CHM Therapy Services, in Milton and Guelph, Ontario. By the time she reached university, however, years of stuffing it down had taken its toll, which led to an emotional crash. Gillian talks about how this became a turning point in her life, ultimately setting her on a path towards health and wellness. Together we discuss the woo-woos of mindfulness meditation, our evolving identities, and get into the nitty-gritty of motherhood and gender inequality.
