Last week I shared an episode with the wonderful Dr Monika Sharma all about cortisol. We talked about what it is, why we need it, how to regulate it and the role it plays in relation to type 1 diabetes. Within that chat we got onto the subject of a morning routine and what we can do to build healthy habits that can set us up for the day without being overstimulated and sending cortisol off the charts.I'm super thankful to Dr Monika for her expertise and knowledge, and during that conversation I briefly mentioned how I had recently started to build out a more consistent morning routine, having been a morning routine skeptic and believing it couldn't possibly help me with my type 1 diabetes.Of course it's in no way a replacement for medication, professional guidance or treatment, but I do believe that finding a version of a morning routine that works for me has been a positive addition to my life.So today I'm sharing my thoughts around a morning routine, and what I'm currently doing (and not doing) before diving into the never-ending to-dos and deadlines. This is just my personal experience and in no way intended as advice, but I hope you find it interesting! After just ONE week of going vegan as a type 1 diabetic, my insulin needs dropped by 70%.Sounds amazing, right?Well… it almost put me in the back of an ambulance. The wild part? What I learned applies to ANY diet — vegan, keto, paleo, carnivore — you name it.This one mistake nearly wrecked me, but fixing it changed everything.>> ENJOY!Grab your Ultimate Guide To T1D Weight Loss here: https://t1dbootcamp.com/uwlgPurchase your copy of "The Blood Sugar Freedom Formula" book TODAY!https://www.amazon.com/dp/1964811880?psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&ref_=chk_typ_quicklook_imgToDpFree T1D Support Group Here: https://diabetesinaction.com/join-group-1---------Welcome to the Pardon My Pancreas podcast!! Social media is making a lot of noise about cortisol right now. But what exactly does this hormone do? How does it interact with other hormones in the body? What should someone with type 1 diabetes be aware of when it comes to cortisol?Today I'm digging deep with the wonderful Dr Monika Sharma, whose sister's experiences with type 1 diabetes prompted her to pursue a career in medicine. We're bringing you the facts away from the social media noise to discuss what exactly cortisol is, why we need it, how to figure out if you're interrupting its function, what you can do to regulate it, and whether a morning routine really matters. This is something Dr Monika has personally lived through, shifting her own lifestyle and work routine as a GP to achieve better health. So whether you're feeling exhausted, stressed out and pulled in 100 different directions, or simply curious to learn more about hormonal health, this episode is for you. Episode 25:34 Knowing Your INSULIN Level Is As Important As Knowing Your Blood Sugar Level. Here's Why… Most doctors, when ordering blood work for a patient, will include an A1C test. This is wise because an A1C test will reveal what a person's blood sugar has been, on average, over the previous three months. Ideally, your A1C score should be below 5.7 (my preference is for it to be 5.4 or less). A score between 5.7 and 6.4 reflects Prediabetes, while a score of 6.5 or above is considered to be Diabetic. But there's a problem with this: A person's A1C score is NOT the only indicator of blood sugar issues. Or, stated another way, a person can have a normal A1C score and still have SEVERE blood sugar issues. How? By having elevated Insulin levels! On this episode I share the story of a patient of mine whose blood sugar levels were okay… but his Insulin levels were through the roof! In fact, his Insulin levels were so high that he was, in my opinion, a walking time bomb. However, because he had his Insulin levels tested… something MOST doctors don't do… we were able to identify this problem and address it accordingly. Be sure to give this episode a good listen as understanding the role of Insulin, and the importance of having it tested, is critically important for anyone who cares about their health. And, as always, please share it with a friend. Thanks! ———————- Want to learn more? Continue the conversation regarding this episode, and all future episodes, by signing up for our daily emails. On September 3rd 2025, diabetes and sport will go under the global spotlight that is a House of Commons debate. In today's episode the man who made it happen tells us why - and what this could mean for the millions of people living with diabetes in the UK.Chris Bright is one of the community's crusaders. As part of his role as Community Partnerships and Events Lead at Breakthrough T1D in the UK, he has put diabetes in sport on the agenda at the highest possible level. The goal? To improve the inclusivity of physical activity for people with diabetes. The need is clear - the Equality Act that safeguards around 3.5 million people with diabetes in work and education does not currently extend to sport. In fact, recent research found that of 180 existing governing bodies in sport, only four have policies in place for people with diabetes.Diagnosed at the age of 8, Chris overcame stigma and the challenges of a very inflexible insulin regime as a young athlete to represent Wales at futsal. He later used those negative experiences as momentum to build The Diabetes Football Community, bringing young footballers with diabetes together while rewriting attitudes to type 1 diabetes and football. In this episode we dig into different pockets of Chris's work, including some new recommendations for travel, airports and airport security. We touch on his personal journey, and he reveals his strategy for successfully creating change in the face of inequality - perfect for anyone who feels as galvanised as I was listening to Chris's phenomenal story. From Culture to Kitchen, A Healthy Plate My interview with Lorena Drago In this episode, we cover: Chef Robert and Lorena Drago, a registered dietitian specializing in diabetes management and multicultural nutrition, discussed the importance of accurate dietary information and cultural considerations in diabetes care. They explored common myths about diabetes in Hispanic communities and shared insights about nutritious foods from Latin American cuisine, including beans, legumes, and various fruits and vegetables. We ended the conversation with Lorena's practical advice for managing blood glucose levels while enjoying traditional foods, along with tips for healthy grocery shopping on a budget, and she offered free webinars for further education. FREE OFFER I am offering a short course for free. This is the application: https://forms.gle/QFPffvJYDwUwdamv6 ______________________________________________________________ Nutrition and Cultural Diversity Journey Lorena shared her journey into the field of nutrition, motivated by her curiosity about the relationship between food and health, particularly how food affects diabetes management and connects with different cultures. She recounted an anecdote about being confused by the Spanish word for "orange" in a commercial, which led her to discover the cultural diversity within the Hispanic community, especially within Colombia's different regions. Chef acknowledged Lorena's experience and background, setting the stage for the main discussion. Hispanic Diabetes Diet Myths Debunked Lorena discussed common myths about diabetes in the Hispanic community, emphasizing that there is no single Hispanic diet and that dietary choices can be modified to manage diabetes. She clarified that all fruits contain carbohydrates, and blood glucose response depends on the type and quantity consumed, not just the sweetness. Chef Robert agreed and expressed frustration with misleading nutrition information online, advocating for consulting certified dietitians for accurate guidance. Lorena also noted that diabetes-friendly foods vary by cuisine within the Hispanic community. Hispanic Cuisines and Bean Benefits Lorena discussed the diverse Hispanic cuisines in the United States, focusing on Mexico as the largest subgroup. She highlighted the nutritional benefits of beans and legumes, emphasizing their protein, fiber, and mineral content. Lorena advised patients to consume more beans and legumes, noting their affordability and convenience, even suggesting canned beans as a quick option. Avocado's Journey to Trendy Superfood Lorena discussed the evolution of avocado from a lesser-known food among Hispanics to its current popularity as a trendy "It" food, noting its health benefits and the shift in perceptions about dietary fats. She also highlighted other nutritious foods from Latin American cuisine, including chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, quinoa, corn, chilies, and nopal cactus pads, emphasizing their health benefits and cultural significance. Chef Robert listened and engaged with comments, expressing interest in some of the foods mentioned. Blood Glucose Management Strategies Lorena shared her step-by-step approach to helping clients manage their blood glucose levels while enjoying traditional foods. She begins by assessing how clients monitor their glucose and gathers detailed information about their diet. Lorena then recommends paired testing for 2-3 days to track blood glucose responses to meals. Finally, she provides personalized recommendations aligned with American Diabetes Association guidelines, focusing on maintaining target blood glucose levels while incorporating traditional foods. Healthy Eating Strategies and Recipes Lorena discussed strategies for healthy eating, focusing on nutrient-dense options and carbohydrate management. She suggested making a French toast alternative with fruits, nuts, and a sweetener like date paste, which has a lower glycemic response than sugar or sugar-free syrup. Lorena emphasized the importance of tracking carbohydrate intake and using tools like CGM values to adjust meals accordingly. She encouraged trying the French toast recipe three times a week and enjoying sweetbreads about twice a week. Budget-Friendly Healthy Grocery Tips Lorena shared tips for healthy grocery shopping on a budget, emphasizing the importance of buying in-season produce and using frozen foods, which can be more cost-effective and just as nutritious as fresh options. She advised using AI for meal planning, shopping during senior discounts, utilizing coupons, and incorporating soy foods like tofu for protein. Chef agreed and highlighted the benefits of frozen foods, noting that many people overlook them due to misconceptions about freshness. Diabetes Management and Professional Guidance Chef and Lorena discussed the importance of clear communication and professional guidance for individuals managing diabetes, emphasizing the need for consulting healthcare professionals and diabetes educators to separate myths from facts. Lorena expressed joy in helping people gain the knowledge and skills to manage their condition effectively, leading to improved health outcomes and reduced need for frequent visits. She shared her social media platforms in both English and Spanish as the best ways for listeners to connect with her for further support. Diabetes Management Webinar Series Lorena Drago, a diabetes management expert, offered three free webinars on managing post-meal blood glucose levels, which she will contact participants about directly. Chef interviewed Lorena about diabetes management and concluded with a rapid-fire Q&A game. Chef mentioned that the podcast episode would be available in about a week, after a brief delay due to a family celebration of their new grandchild. How can our listeners connect with you? Diabetes is one giant math equation, HOWEVER...The entire equation falls to pieces without the correct BASE.Think about it like a skyscraper...If the skyscraper has the tallest structure, it'll look fancy and impressive...But without the proper foundation, the whole thing crumbles the second the wind picks up a little too much. The same is true with blood sugars...You might even think you've got decent control...But without this foundational piece - it could all come crumbling down TODAY.In today's episode, I share exactly that - and from a real life example no less.>> ENJOY!Grab your free ticket to this advanced T1D training here:https://diabetesinaction.com/Purchase your copy of "The Blood Sugar Freedom Formula" book TODAY!https://www.amazon.com/dp/1964811880?psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&ref_=chk_typ_quicklook_imgToDpFree T1D Support Group Here: https://diabetesinaction.com/join-group-1---------Welcome to the Pardon My Pancreas podcast!! This week, Luis is joined by Dr. Christopher Doern from VCU Health to explore the complex world of diabetic wound cultures. How does diabetes impair wound healing—and what makes these infections so difficult to diagnose and treat? Dr. Doern dives into the microbiology behind diabetic foot wounds, highlighting the impact of bacterial diversity, specimen quality, and the limitations of traditional culture methods. He also shares best practices for workup strategies and antibiotic selection in these often polymicrobial infections. Amanda Wiggins is CEO of cGP Lab, a New Zealand-based company that is commercializing cycline Glycine Proline, cGP, a dipeptide molecule that helps regulate blood vessel formation. The Lab is pursuing a medical food regulatory pathway to bring its cGP-based products to the market for the dietary management of peripheral neuropathy and other vascular complications of type 2 diabetes and is exploring the potential for Parkinson's disease and other dementias. The Lab sources cGP from a combination of New Zealand blackcurrant and beef bone collagen using a proprietary manufacturing process. Amanda explains, "The cGP Lab is a relatively new company. We were formed in 2020, and our mission is really to commercialize a really interesting dipeptide molecule called cycline Glycine Proline, or cGP for short. Although we're new to commercializing it, there's quite a huge body of evidence that sits behind where we've got today. Our Chief Science Officer, Dr. Jian Guan, has researched cGP for around 30 years. It's her life's work. What makes it really interesting is that cGP exists in all of our bodies. It's an endogenous molecule, but it also exists in some food sources. So we've identified those food sources and we've created a manufacturing process to create a standardized cGP ingredient that we use in our supplement range." "Like many companies, we were actually founded on somewhat of a serendipitous discovery. So, back in 2016, the founders of the company had done a clinical trial on Parkinson's patients. And in that trial, they'd given the patients capsules containing blackcurrant extract because they were interested in whether blackcurrant extract, which is high in anthocyanins, could address some of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease." "What we've ended up with now is a proprietary manufacturing process that combines New Zealand blackcurrants together with beef bone collagen. And we put those two together through a prolonged heating process. And what happens is that the amino acids, glycine and proline, when subject to heat or, even better, heat and pressure, will cyclise and form the cGP. So it's really that manufacturing process that brings out the cGP. And in that initial Parkinson's study, the level of cGP was actually quite low because that heating process hadn't been done for long enough. So we've come a long way in learning how to make cGP, and it really comes from that combination of New Zealand blackcurrant together with the collagen peptides." "So, where we're seeing it being most useful is right at the start of a peripheral neuropathy diagnosis. So patients often, well, I know in the US anyway, foot checks are generally done annually for people with type 2 diabetes. It's a bit different here in New Zealand. And so that should hopefully pick up the first inklings that someone's starting to develop peripheral neuropathy. And what the path to market that we're seeing for our innovation is called the medical food category, which is a bit different." #cGPLab #cGP #MedicalFood #DiabeticPeripheralNeuropathy cGPmax.com Listen to the podcast here

Summary Food Addiction Awareness Discussion Chef and Bertrand discussed the growing awareness and concern around the topic of food addiction, noting its increasing presence in media and public discourse. Bertrand highlighted the similarity between the techniques used by tobacco companies to create addiction and those applied by the food industry, emphasizing the success of these strategies in forming habits. Chef expressed excitement about the potential of Go Cocoa as a solution to help people, while Julie, a repeat guest, shared her enthusiasm for being part of the discussion. Go Coco: Healthier Food Choices Chef welcomed Julie and Bertrand to the podcast, highlighting their role in creating the Go Coco app, which helps people, especially those with diabetes, identify and avoid ultra-processed foods. Bertrand explained the app's origins in Spain six years ago and its mission to improve health by offering better food choices. Julie, a registered dietitian, shared her experience working with Go Coco, emphasizing her focus on empowering consumers to make healthier decisions for themselves and their families. Ultra-Processed Foods and Diabetes Risk The discussion focused on ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and their impact on diabetes. Julie explained that UPFs are foods that wouldn't be found in a home kitchen and are often highly palatable and addictive, with a study showing a 17% increased risk of type 2 diabetes for every 10% increase in UPF consumption. Bertrand shared user experiences with artificial sweeteners having similar effects to sugar, and both Julie and Bertrand emphasized that people with diabetes should reduce their consumption of UPFs by focusing on whole, unprocessed foods. They also discussed how UPFs often contain unhealthy fats and can lead to weight gain, with Bertrand noting that processed foods are designed to be addictive and consumed in larger quantities despite having the same nutritional profile as unprocessed alternatives. Portion Control and Food Cravings The group discussed the challenges of portion control and food cravings, particularly for snack foods like Doritos and cake. Julie explained a study about the first bite of cake being the most satisfying, leading to overeating. They emphasized the importance of reading food labels and choosing foods with simple, recognizable ingredients. Julie recommended using the Go Coco app to scan food labels and get information on ultra-processed foods. The conversation concluded with a discussion on rethinking convenience in diabetes-friendly eating, suggesting that whole, less processed foods like fruits and nuts can be convenient options. Misleading Food Label Terminology Chef and Julie discussed the misleading nature of food labels, particularly terms like "low sugar" and "diabetes-friendly," which can still refer to ultra-processed foods. Julie explained that such products often contain multiple non-nutritive sweeteners and added fats to maintain taste, and she emphasized that whole, unprocessed foods are more satisfying and less likely to lead to overeating. Bertrand noted that "low fat" claims are not found on fruits and vegetables, and Chef agreed that these labels can mislead consumers. Healthy Eating Strategies for Diabetes Chef Robert, Julie, and Bertrand discussed practical strategies for improving diet and health, particularly for those with diabetes. Julie introduced a new feature in the Go Coco app, the real food tracker, which analyzes meals and provides advice on improving nutrition. Bertrand emphasized the importance of small, gradual changes in diet, such as reducing ultra-processed foods and replacing sugary drinks with alternatives like sparkling water. Chef Robert encouraged listeners to make subtle changes to their eating habits and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Julie expressed hope in the power of conversation and suggested focusing on adding healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, rather than subtracting unhealthy ones. GoCoCo: Healthy Food Choices App The meeting focused on the Gococo app, which helps users make healthier food choices by scanning products and providing nutritional information. Bertrand explained that the app offers a free trial and a free version, with additional features available for a fee. Julie emphasized that user feedback has been instrumental in developing the app's features, particularly for people living with diabetes. The discussion highlighted the importance of awareness and education in making healthier food choices, while also acknowledging the joy of cooking and enjoying food. Diabetes is the fastest-growing disease in America. This week, Dr. Prather gives a preview of his upcoming free seminar, "Diabetes Decoded: A Holistic Look At Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes", happening this Wednesday, June 25th at 6:30 p.m. in this episode, we talk about:—Why Diabetes is a growing problem. And why this issue is unique to America. —The (really gross!) story behind the name Diabetes and how the Ancient Greek doctors used to diagnose it.—How Dr. Prather finds "there are more people who come into our office who are pre-Diabetic than aren't." —The role of viruses like Coxsackie B in kicking off Type I Diabetes.—The 3 P's of Diabetes symptoms to be aware of. Plus, how weight LOSS is a "red flag" symptom of Diabetes...which is often caused by weight gain. —How the nerves, the kidneys, and the eyes are damaged by Diabetes. And the increased risk of Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer that come from Diabetes.—How Type II Diabetes "HAS to be" dealt with through Structure-Function Health Care, while Disease Care is "totally worthless" in getting Type II Diabetes under control.—Why herbals are "amazing" for dealing with Diabetes. And the role Homeopathy plays in dealing with Diabetes, especially for children. —The WORST food for Diabetes that increases blood sugar more than any other food. And how fiber is "probably one of the best medicines" for Diabetes.—How Vitamin utilization is decreased by Diabetes, while the need for Vitamins is increased by Diabetes in order to prevent damage to the body. And why Chromium is described by Dr. Prather as a "magic" mineral for Diabetes.http://www.TheVoiceOfHealthRadio.com
