Unfocused. Not living up to potential. Dr. G thought that about himself for decades… until at 41, he discovered he actually has ADHD. Suddenly the lost keys, unfinished projects, chronic lateness, sensory overwhelm, and shame all made sense. In this intimate solo episode, Dr. G breaks down the neuroscience of adult ADHD, the trauma-based model Gabor Maté teaches, why the default mode network hijacks focus, how stimulant medications impact dopamine long term, and the lifestyle + supplement strategies backed by research. In This Episode: • How ADHD shows up in adults (and why it gets mislabeled as character flaws) • Why high-functioning people go decades without knowing they have ADHD • What the brain science actually reveals about focus, motivation & time perception • The Gabor Maté trauma model — ADHD as adaptation vs disorder • The stimulant conversation: benefits, risks, and dependency realities • Lifestyle anchors that support the ADHD brain (sleep times, routines, movement) • Research-backed supplements that can help support attention Key Takeaways: ✅ ADHD isn't laziness — it's neurodevelopment + nervous system wiring ✅ Trauma in childhood shapes time perception and attention patterns ✅ Medication can help, but informed consent is essential ✅ Exercise, structure, breathwork, and key nutrients truly support regulation ✅ Compassion — not shame — is what actually unlocks change Timestamps: 0:00 - Discovering I Have ADHD at 41 1:04 - My Entire Life Suddenly Made Sense 2:39 - The Idyllwild Moment: How I Found Out 4:45 - Everyone Knew But Me 7:31 - The Real Science Behind ADHD 13:56 - Childhood Signs I Missed 17:31 - What ADHD Actually Is (Not Laziness) 19:33 - Gabor Maté: ADHD as Adaptation to Stress 22:39 - Breaking Free from Shame 24:03 - The Truth About Adderall & Stimulants 26:49 - Natural Tools That Actually Help 28:15 - My Action Plan Moving Forward

Think about a good joke. If you knew the punchline right away? It's less funny. If you had to have the punchline explained? Less funny. But if you understood the punchline within a few moments, and got the satisfaction of "realization" in real time? That makes a BANGER of a joke. It's all about the appropriate level of challenge and thinking. According to Daniel Willingham's book, "Why Students Don't Like School?" Curiosity is fragile. Learning is difficult as hell. Our brains are built for efficiency, not thinking. We can trick our brains into motivation by worrying about the difficulty of the challenge, rather than the topic or the content. We rely on our memories more than our thinking brain.SOURCES:Read Daniel's article for yourself, here: https://www.aft.org/sites/default/files/WILLINGHAM%282%29.pdfCheck out his website + other work: http://www.danielwillingham.com/books.htmlOr read this synopsis of the book: https://classteaching.wordpress.com/2014/04/24/why-dont-students-like-school/Resources for Resisting a Coup: https://makeyourdamnbed.medium.com/practical-guides-to-resisting-a-coup-b44571b9ad66SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!): https://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bedDONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. The Power of Pausing: What Rest Really Reveals

Encouragementology

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2025 30:00

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we're exploring the power of pausing to see what rest can really reveal. We'll be slowing things down. Literally. In a world where “fast” is the default setting: fast food, fast lanes, fast Wi-Fi, it's easy to feel like we're always rushing. Have you ever found yourself impatient in the “wrong” line at the store, agitated by the buffering wheel, or frustrated that someone isn't replying fast enough? It's almost as if our value is tied to how quickly we can move through life. But then, without warning, we hear ourselves say something like, “Where did the time go?” or “Life is just flying by.” Strange, right? We're racing to get to the next thing…only to mourn how fast it's all passing. This week, we're hitting the brakes because maybe it's not just about productivity. Maybe there's something hidden in the quiet. A secret in the stillness. A truth that's hard to hear when everything is moving too fast. We'll dig into what it means to find the middle lane, not stuck, not speeding, but moving with intention. Together, we'll ask: What am I missing when I never slow down? What could rest reveal if I actually gave myself permission to pause? And if rest feels like a luxury you can't afford or a guilty pleasure you never let yourself enjoy, then this is the episode for you. Ready to shift gears? What does rest feel like to me? Does it feel luxurious? Lazy? Guilt-ridden? Productive? Unfamiliar? Now, here's a trickier one: When was the last time I paused, on purpose, not because I was forced to, but because I chose to? CHALLENGE: Press pause—on purpose. Not because you're burned out or forced to stop, but because you choose to check in with yourself. Create space this week for a moment of stillness. Let it be awkward, quiet, or unfamiliar if it needs to be. Then listen. Not to the world's demands—but to your own voice, your own rhythm, your own needs. I Know YOU Can Do It!

Everyone praises hustle, but what if being lazy—strategically lazy—is actually the smartest move you can make? The duo dives into how laziness shows up in marketing (and why that's not always a bad thing), how shame and cleanliness drive customer decisions, and why speed beats effort every time. From using guilt to sell more details to embracing “the path of least resistance” as a business strategy, Shawn and Marshall break down how smart marketers make lazy look legendary. If you've ever been told to “work harder,” this one will make you want to work smarter—and dirtier.

You're not lazy – you're protecting something with Andrea Levinson

Send us a textIf you've ever looked at your to-do list and thought, “Why am I being so lazy?”, this one's for you. Today I'm joined by psychologist and coach Andrea Levinson to reframe that loaded word. We unpack why so many of us confuse productivity with worth, how our nervous system protects us by avoiding discomfort, and why procrastination often points to something precious we're guarding - identity, energy, or safety. We trace the story from tribal safety (don't get kicked out of the village) through the industrial revolution (time traded for widgets) to modern business where many of us still measure ourselves by output. Andrea shares a gentler, smarter frame: you're not lazy; you're protecting something. When you understand what that “something” is, you can design your week around work that fuels you, set boundaries without guilt, and experiment without the spiral of self-criticism.We also get practical. You'll hear how to spot the fear of success hiding behind “I'm stuck”, how to make risk reversible so you can actually move, and a simple end-of-day check-in that helps you catch unhelpful thought loops before they run the show.Key takeawaysCalling yourself “lazy” is usually shorthand for “I feel unsafe, uncertain or over-exposed.” Procrastination can be protection. Get curious, not punitive.Your worth isn't your output. Flow work gives you energy; busy work drains it. Build your week to maximise the former and contain the latter.Fear of success is real. Many of us avoid momentum because of what growth might mean for identity, relationships, or capacity. Name it to tame it.Make change reversible. Treat new marketing channels and offers like time-boxed experiments. If it flops, you adjust. Most decisions are not permanent.Negative self-talk is habitual. A two-minute evening reflection helps you catch it fast and set a cleaner intention for tomorrow.Try this this weekName the protection. When you feel “lazy”, ask: What am I protecting? My image, my energy, my focus, my sense of competence? What am I making this task mean?Design for flow. List three activities that leave you more energised after doing them. Put at least two on your calendar this week.Run an experiment. Choose one marketing action you've been avoiding. Define the smallest viable test, a clear measure of success, and a review date.Close the loop daily. End each workday with: How did I go with self-talk today? What's one thing I'll do differently tomorrow? Write it down.Connect with Andrea:LinkedInWebsiteDOWNLOAD MY CONTENT PLANNER - https://becchappell.com.au/content-planner/Instagram @bec_chappellLinkedIn – Bec Chappell If you're ready to work together, I'm ready to work with you and your team. How to work with me:1. Welcome back to the Magician On Duty Journey Series! On this edition we welcome AmuAmu (@amu_amu) Since 2017, AmuAmu has carved an unmistakable path through the global electronic landscape, crafting soundscapes that merge depth, emotion, and groove into timeless journeys. His productions and remixes—often lush, hypnotic, and deeply human—have positioned him as one of the genre's most innovative voices. With releases on renowned labels such as Magician On Duty, Monada, Kosa, trndmsk, and D.O.T.Y Records, AmuAmu continues to redefine what slow, soulful electronic music can be. Before embracing the slower tempo, AmuAmu—formerly known as Marcus Sur—built his reputation across the international house and techno circuit, releasing on iconic imprints like Noir Music, Traum Schallplatten, and Steyoyoke. This duality of experience shines through in his sets: rhythmic yet introspective, refined yet boundless. His Journey for Magician On Duty encapsulates this essence perfectly—an invitation to let go of boundaries and move freely through rhythm, texture, and feeling. It's a seamless blend of organic grooves and intricate melodies, connecting continents and moods with effortless flow. The Dunning-Kruger effect—the psychological phenomenon where people with little knowledge or competence in a subject overestimate their understanding—has become the defining disease of modern Epstein coverage. Too many pundits, influencers, and so-called “experts” have substituted shallow familiarity for deep research, parroting surface-level talking points as if they've cracked some grand conspiracy. They recycle half-truths, ignore court filings, and build entire narratives off memes and rumor. The irony is brutal: the loudest voices in the room are often the least informed, drowning out serious investigators who have actually read the depositions, subpoenas, and financial disclosures. In the vacuum left by lazy journalism, self-appointed “truth-tellers” have turned the Epstein case into a carnival of ego and misinformation—performing knowledge rather than pursuing it.Mainstream media, for its part, hasn't fared much better. Too often, networks have framed the Epstein story through sanitized press releases and “safe” angles that protect institutional interests rather than expose them. The Dunning-Kruger effect here is institutional—the press acts as though summarizing a few court documents equals investigative rigor, while ignoring the broader ecosystem of corruption, finance, and government complicity that kept Epstein untouchable for decades. The result is a grotesque parody of journalism: cable anchors and Twitter theorists both convinced they understand the full scope of a case that even prosecutors failed to unravel. Epstein's coverage has become a hall of mirrors reflecting ignorance, arrogance, and cowardice—and the public, desperate for truth, is left staring into the void where accountability should be.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Could intentional lazy parenting foster your child's independence?

Do you really know?

You have to navigate an almost endless list of uncertainties when raising a child, and it's hard to figure out the best approach to parenting. At one end of the spectrum, you've got so-called helicopter parents, who micromanage every aspect of their children's lives, and at the other end parents who are so hands-off that some label them as lazy. Maybe sometimes they are lazy. But in other cases, letting kids learn from their mistakes is an intentional choice rather than pure laziness. You might think that stepping back means kisd are more likely to get into trouble. But that's not necessarily the case. The idea is to scale back constant parental involvement to help kids develop their own skills, problem-solving abilities, and independence. After all, if parents swoop in to solve every issue, how can children ever figure out how to manage on their own? Couldn't such an approach be seen as negligent? How does one become a “lazy” parent? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!
