I sat down for a special conversation with an old friend of mine- Jeremy Spring. Jeremy has been a part of the indie music scene for more than 15 years, sold thousands and thousands of records, had is music featured on MTV and Netflix shows like Love, toured across the US, and provided hours of entertainment and solace for a generation of midwesterners that had nowhere else to turn. Our guest this week is musician Jeremy Spring, who you might know from bands like Abandon Kansas, Crusoe, and his newest project, Glass Age! Jeremy is a pastor's kid that fell in love with music through church. He went on to become an accomplished musician, and toured the country extensively with many of the Christian rock bands you probably listened to as a kid. We got to talk with Jeremy about his upbringing, time in the music industry, how his faith has changed, over the years, and the ways in which he finds fulfilment within an institution that he doesn't always see eye-to-eye with. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did, and that you'll follow Jeremy's band, Glass Age, at theglassage.bandcamp.com/ and wherever you stream music! This week, John unites with some of the other members of A Band In Kansas for an in-depth convo on all things music, and what it's like behind the scenes for the band. Formerly known as Abandon Kansas, the group now plays covers of top rock, alternative, and pop-punk hits from the past 20 years. Discussion includes standing out in a saturated market of music, how the cover band was formed, why lead singer Jeremy Spring has never bought one piece of his own music gear, surviving a world with no live music, and much more. It's an all-new, wild, and fun interview to finish off 2020 in a big way. In episode 1 of Joyous Eclectic we listen to what makes different guitar solos good and not-so-good. Listener submission provided by Wyatt Lampley. After the break we talk about Physical vs. Digital music, vinyl and how we can best listen to music moving forward. Disclaimer: for this first episode we did not have all of the audio equipment we have from episode 2 onward, and thus the audio quality suffers somewhat. Furthermore we hadn't nailed down timing and some formatting, so the episode is considerably longer than we plan to go moving forward. Two atheists join us on this episode to discuss their perspectives and experiences as Millenial generation "nones" - the religiously unnafiliated. Colin and Ben discuss the Pew Religious Landscape Study, decline in Christianity, and what - if any - good news we have for those who don't believe. Also featured in this episode is music from Abandon Kansas and Awaking Mercury. http://badchristian-2.myshopify.com/collections/abandon-kansas
Jeremy makes a great addition to the show for two reasons. One, because he has great rapport with the guys since being on tour with them and two, because he has some really heavy and troubling stuff going on in his head and he talks very openly about it. Marriage, addiction, anxiety, depression, fear, failure and being a pastors kid all play into what he is dealing with and writing about on the new Abandon Kansas album.
