In the midst of Israeli atrocities in Lebanon, and as the genocide in Gaza continues unabated, Alex Whisson spoke to Gamel Kheir, Secretary of the Lebanese Muslim Association in NSW.
Houston Astros manager Joe Espada joins The Matt Thomas Show following Monday's 3-1 road loss to the San Diego Padres. Spencer Arrighetti opened up the three-game series for the Astros, giving up eight hits and two runs while recording his second-highest pitch total this year at 102 pitches. Arrighetti battled on the mound as the Padres "put the bat on the ball" and fouled off 29 pitches. "They grind at-bats," Espada said. The Astros have dealt with missed calls from umpires as of late, fueling the conversation to add a challenge system to the game. "It's very frustrating" to have bats taken away, so "I am open for" a challenge system. Outfielder Ben Gamel has been placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering a left knee contusion Saturday. Gamel going on the IL "puts us in a tough spot in the outfield." However, Kyle Tucker will be in right field Tuesday. "We are really, really close" to Tucker being 100%, but the Astros are "still monitoring his volume." Espada also talks about Jake Meyers working on his timing, Yainer Diaz playing more at first base, Hunter Brown's preparation for Tuesday's matchup and staying with the six-man rotation for now.

Based on real events, I AM GITMO follows the reaction the United States to the 9/11 attack and the human cost that came about from the implementation of the War on Terror. The film focuses on Gamel Sadek, a Muslim schoolteacher as he is taken from his home and delivered to Bagram Air Base, a CIA black site, where he is questioned on the whereabouts of the 9/11 mastermind, Osama Bin Laden. He is tortured when he denies knowing him. Chained and hooded, he is put on a cargo plane to Guantanamo Bay. John Anderson, a military interrogator, is brought out of retirement and assigned to Gamel's case leaving his daughter behind in New York. Despite relentless beatings, starvation, and torture in Gitmo, Gamel maintains he has no affiliation with Al Qaeda or Bin Laden. John struggles to accept the new torture methods imposed by General Miller, newly in command of the prison, and the mandate to force a confession at any cost. As Gamel prepares for a hearing on his status as an enemy combatant, he realizes he could be held indefinitely, and that John's testimony will be the deciding factor. Director and writer Philippe Diaz stops by to talk about his inspiration for telling this particular story, the fatally flawed planning, execution and objectives of the War on Terror, the collateral damage done to America's standing in the world, the staggering loss of innocent human life and the failure of American leadership to acknowledge or compensate the innocent people who were swept up in the overreaction. A man was hospitalized Sunday night after crashing into a tree off Cobb Parkway in Marietta, police announced. According to the Cobb County Police Department, the man, who has not been identified, was driving a white Nissan Altima north on Cobb Parkway near its intersection with Progressive Way. The car left the roadway and crashed into a tree. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and seriously injured, police said. After being extricated from the car he was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police. A Kennesaw woman was killed Saturday after being hit by a car as she was walking a dog, the Cobb County Police Department announced. Veronica Miller was struck by a car and killed around 9 a.m. Saturday, police said. According to police, Miller was walking the dog and crossing Wooten Lake Road at its intersection with Glenlake Parkway when she was struck. The dog was not injured. Miller was crossing from the north side to the south side of Wooten Lake Road, and was struck by a blue 1999 BMW 328i, according to police. The driver, a 23-year-old Kennesaw man, was not injured. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police. There was no way around it. A Sierra Canyon boys team known for its flash, for its highlights, for the celebrity that follows, was going to have to get gritty Saturday night, assistant coach Chris Howe said. The Trailblazers were taking on nationally ranked Wheeler, a team that Howe said, simply had "dudes." Two of those dudes, in fact, were playing at their future stomping grounds — seniors Isaiah Collier and Arrington Page, a pair of Southern California signees. But after Sierra Canyon fell behind by double digits early, its move-on-a-string defense overwhelmed the prized recruits and Wheeler in a 66-55 win — perhaps the Trailblazers' best of the season. The team down by eight at halftime, Sierra Canyon's staff "challenged" senior Ashton Hardaway, coach Andre Chevalier said after the game. And Hardaway — son of former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway and a Memphis commit — responded with perhaps his best all-around half as a Trailblazer, getting aggressive on the glass and banging down low with Page. It was his range, though, that propelled him to 18 points and a pair of massive third-quarter threes to pull Sierra Canyon back into the game, Hardaway barking at any Wheeler defender within earshot while backpedaling down the floor. And after a quiet first half, Bronny James continued to show an improved sense of the moment in his senior year, detonating for 17 fourth-quarter points. Collier finished with 17 points but was held by James, Isaiah Elohim and a horde of Trailblazers wing defenders to five-for-16 shooting. Page, who Chevalier called "the most skilled player that we've played all year long," finished with just eight points and seven rebounds. Before all dogs go to heaven, many dogs go to shelters. At an adoption event held by LifeLine Animal Project and Best Friends in Atlanta, a number of dogs — and one cat — were adopted out of the shelter and foster system to become family pets. The dogs were gathered — though socially distanced — on leashes outside the office of Best Friends in Atlanta off of South Cobb Drive near Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Most of them were taken to the event by their foster owners. An outbreak of canine flu in Fulton and DeKalb counties is part of the reason why the shelter system in the metro Atlanta is stressed. According to Vickers, the LifeLine shelters are diverting all new intakes to foster homes instead of shelters to prevent them from potentially coming into contact with contagious shelter dogs. Most dogs recover from canine influenza within two to three weeks, according to the CDC, though the virus sometimes leads to more severe illness. LifeLine is still adopting out dogs that are testing positive for canine flu to people who don't have other dogs. Foster families without other dogs can also help keep infected dogs isolated from shelters. Fostering for any amount of time, even over a single weekend, can help dogs find permanent homes because it provides more information to potential adopters about how a dog behaves in a home environment. Both organizations vaccinate, microchip and either spay or neuter their animals before they are adopted out. For more, visit lifelineanimal.org and bestfriends.org/atlanta. Students and teachers alike lined the streets Friday afternoon to give a warm welcome to Marietta High's boys and girls cross country teams, who swept the state championships last year. 2022 was the second time in three years Marietta claimed both Class AAAAAAA titles, doing so in 2020 as well. Buses carrying the champions processed through west Marietta, ending at the high school. Declared one Burruss Elementary School student as the parade neared, "This is one of the best days of school ever." Students and parents held up signs supporting their favorite runners. People and businesses are responding to a break-in at a local eatery with donations and gifts. Two days before Christmas, thieves smashed the front door of Pie Bar Marietta near Marietta Square around 5 a.m. and left with a cash drawer and safe from the bakery. Owner Lauren Bolden discovered the break-in when she arrived at the store that morning. Pie Bar's locations in Marietta and Woodstock have seen a response from the community in the weeks since the break-in. Woodstock City Church bought tacos for the staff's lunch, Bolden said, while Woodstock Mayor Michael Caldwell asked people to donate money to the business on his Facebook page. Since the break-in, Pie Bar Marietta added some security measures, and it has operated without accepting cash. Bolden said the business is considering going cashless at the Woodstock location, too. Bolden wasn't sure whether the business had recouped the cost of the stolen money and the door replacement yet, but she said the support helped the business get through a difficult day. On December 23, the day of the robbery, several hundred customers were supposed to pick up their Christmas orders from Pie Bar Marietta. Those pies had to moved to the original store, Bolden said, and all the associated customers had to be told their pies were now in Woodstock. Vivan Gamel of Acworth, the general manager for both locations, woke up to several missed calls from Bolden that morning and went into work early to help. Gamel, who works mostly at the Marietta Pie Bar, said she thinks the majority of people who have come in lately have heard about the crime, and are coming in to make sure everyone is okay and support the business. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. NCAAFB – Fire at Camp Randall Stadium renovation injures one person A fire broke out Wednesday morning during a renovation project at Camp Randall Stadium, causing one worker to get taken to the hospital with injuries. Madison Fire Department officials said paramedics treated and transported one person to a hospital with “serious injuries.” The name of the injured person wasn’t released. Wisconsin athletic officials said the fire involved roofing solvent material and occurred during construction. Wisconsin’s home football stadium is undergoing a renovation of its south end zone. NCAAFB – Saban: Current state of college football not ‘sustainable’ Alabama coach Nick Saban is concerned about the current state of college football. He recently told The Associated Press "I don’t think what we’re doing right now is a sustainable model.” The new era of college athletics sees players having more opportunities to earn money than ever before and more power to determine where they play. Saban says if college athletes are going to be paid, he would like Alabama to provide the same amount to everyone on his team while supporting their ability to earn as much as they can in endorsement and sponsorship deals after they get to college. NFL – Mayfield: Browns ‘disrespected,’ deceived him about future Baker Mayfield feels the Cleveland Browns deceived him about their offseason plans, which resulted in them trading for Deshaun Watson. Speaking on a podcast, Mayfield, whose tumultuous four-year run as Cleveland’s quarterback essentially ended when the team acquired Watson in a stunning deal last month with Houston, said the team was not upfront with him. Mayfield said he feels “disrespected 100 percent” because the team told him one thing and did another. Mayfield struggled while playing most of last season with a shoulder injury. He’s currently on Cleveland’s roster as the Browns try to work out a trade. Olympics – Allyson Felix says she’s retiring after 2022 track season Allyson Felix, who closed the Tokyo Games last year with more Olympic medals than any U.S. track and field athlete in history, says she will retire after the 2022 season. In an Instagram post, Felix says her final season won’t be so much about the numbers on the clock as enjoying the moment with her fans. Matt and Yolanda Gamel, parents of five children, sat down with Chris and Christy to share the story of their daughter Dani's journey through childhood cancer. They talk about Dani's diagnosis of ALL at the age of 13, and how Yolanda had to push for the lab work that would bring about the diagnosis. They explain how each of their children had a different reaction to Dani's diagnosis, and how the hardest part for Dani, a young teenager, was losing her hair. They also share the challenges on their jobs and their marriage, but how they ultimately came together to work as a team and lean on each other. They close the conversation by sharing advice they have for others on the journey of childhood cancer.

After one vault on Tuesday, Simone Biles took herself out of the US gymnastics women's team competition. A day later, she withdrew from the all-around, “in order to focus on her mental health,” read a statement on the USA Gymnastics' Twitter account. Simone also blamed the twisties, where, as the Washington Post describes, athletes “lose control of their bodies as they spin through the air. Sometimes they twist when they hadn't planned to. Other times they stop midway through, as Biles did. And after experiencing the twisties once, it's very difficult to forget. Instinct gets replaced by thought. Thought quickly leads to worry. Worry is difficult to escape.” While the majority of fans have reacted to Biles' departure from these marquee competitions with support, it did draw scorn from some, who see her decision not to compete as quitting or a cop out. As with everything else these days, Biles' decision became part of the culture wars. And no doubt her decision will make its way into countless sermon illustrations this weekend. This week on the show, we wanted to talk about how our discussion of elite athletics shapes the way we think about Christian discipleship. And when we hear words like sacrifice and redemption in our culture, it's most often in a sports context. How is that shaping the way the church is talking about those words? Brian Gamel is a postdoctoral fellow at Baylor University's Faith and Sports Institute, where he is writing a book on athletic imagery in the New Testament. He also wrote a piece for Christian Scholar's Review earlier this year called “‘Whoever Wishes to Become Great' – Sports, Glory, and the Gospel.” Tim Dalrymple is the CEO and editor in chief of Christianity Today. He is also a former elite gymnast: When he was a sophomore at Stanford, he was the NCAA's top-ranked gymnast and a likely Olympics contender, until an accident on the high bar broke his neck and ended his athletic career. Gamel and Dalrymple joined global media manager Morgan Lee and executive editor Ted Olsen to discuss Paul's athletic metaphors, a biblical theology of the body and sport, and what it means to actually support athletes in your church. What is Quick to Listen?
