For our third Bombs Away, we're diving into the somewhat successful The Mummy (2017). This movie performed so poorly for Universal that they ended the Dark Universe franchise. It was the beginning of the universe and the end. The Dark Universe franchise was the MCU but for monsters. But if this movie indicates what a franchise full of classic Universal monsters could have been, it would have been blander than a bowl of oatmeal. The story follows Nick Morton (Tom Cruise), a U.S. Army sergeant and mercenary, who accidentally discovers the tomb of an ancient Egyptian princess, Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), during a mission in Iraq. Ahmanet, who made a pact with the dark god Set and was mummified alive for her crimes, is awakened and brings with her a malevolent curse. Oh, also, Russell Crowe is there. This movie is somehow based on the 1999 movie The Mummy. You should watch that instead.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-other-half/exclusive-content

Geographical Context Traveling from ancient Egypt to Mespopotamia. Hiding evil things as far away as possible. Deciphering the Mummy’s historical period Context clues pointing to Egypt’s “New Kingdom,” circa 1500BC-1200BC. Some touches that hinted: Ahmanet’s Nefertiti-inspired crown, her blue finger-paint as direct reference to King Tutankhamun’s golden finger- and toe-jewelry. Speaking of King Tut… His (lack of) actual historical importance. Public knowledge due to the simple coincidence of which things are best preserved and then discovered. Egyptomania From ancient Rome to Victorian England to King Tut in the mid-20th. It keeps coming back! The combination of modernity and exoticism of Ancient Egypt. The Rosetta Stone Napoleon’s groundbreaking work in enabling the study of science and history while conquering things. The birth of Egyptology. Egyptian book of the dead Hollywood’s chronic misunderstanding of the nature of The Book of the Dead. It’s not evil! Egyptian beliefs re death and the afterlife. Misunderstanding the ancient Egyptian gods Chaotic neutral Seth and how he is totally not the god of death. Preservation of order against chaos in Egyptian mythology. Enumerating the actual gods of death and how they’re not necessarily bad guys. The problem with mummies. Is this the most semi-positive review yet for The Mummy, or just more criticism for an already critically trashed summer blockbuster? Colin is once again joined by Jamie to talk all about the 2017 reboot of the 1999 reboot of the 1959 reboot of the 1932 classic! In this episode we talk about whether or not critics and fans are being too harsh on this new Dark Universe, and why the criticism and box office mean nothing going forward. We also rank where The Mummy falls on the Tom Cruise sci-fi blockbuster scale, as well as which sci-fi movie he made that this is way too similar to. Also listen for which classic movie quote Jamie can butcher, and all the many reasons why Colin is in love with slimy rotten decrepit villains. Just who's side will you take in the tag team battle for the ages? Jamie and Imhotep or Colin and Ahmanet? If that hasn't sold you, then let our live reading of Jamie's Netflix queue sell our expertise.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Tom Cruise plays a roguish armed forces associate who doubling as a tomb-raiding antiquities procurer, Nick Morton, who, along with smart-alecky partner-in-crypts, Chris Vail, earns his living digging up ancient artifacts, then selling for the highest price he can get on the black market. Soon the men join forces with noted Egypt expert and archaeologist (and Morton's chance to hook up) Jenny Halsey while in Iraq, where a mammoth underground burial site lies under the sand, housing a mysterious sarcophagus containing the dormant body of Ahmanet, an Ancient Egyptian princess cursed to evil after an attempt to murder her family and usurp the throne to become pharaoh. Now revived from her tomb, Ahmanet decides that Nick will be the new conduit to bring evil to Earth as the host for the god of death, Set.
