That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick revisits the only time legendary actor Walter Matthau hosted Saturday Night Live, offering behind-the-scenes stories from a wild week at 30 Rock. From writers' room pitches and cast reactions to what actually made it to air, it's a full breakdown of a strange, memorable night. Highlights include John Belushi's Cold Open as Fred Silverman, Matthau's pants-dropping monologue tease, and a Killer Bees sketch filled with masturbation jokes. With no musical guest, Garrett Morris stepped up with Mozart, and the Cheeseburger guys made an appearance—alongside some edgy material that still got big laughs. Plus, learn which iconic sketch was originally written for Matthau but went to someone else. [EP 125]

In this episode of Practically Pastoring, we tackle a brutally honest question from a young pastor on Reddit: “What do I do when the church I pastor isn't one I would even attend?”If you've ever found yourself disillusioned in church leadership, unsure how to lead change without blowing things up, or just feeling like a glorified chaplain instead of a visionary leader—this conversation is for you. We talk about how young pastors can handle resistance in established churches, how to keep showing up when your ministry expectations don't match reality, and how to kill the idols of platform and popularity in favor of faithful ministry. You'll hear real stories, raw encouragement, and practical wisdom for discerning when it's time to press on—and when it might be time to move on. Whether you're battling pastoral burnout, navigating church vision challenges, or just trying to love a congregation that doesn't seem to want to change, we hope this episode meets you right where you are.⏱️ Timestamps00:00 – Cold Open & Sponsor Shoutout (Church Merch!)02:00 – The Reddit Question: “I'm Just a Chaplain Now”04:15 – Why 2.5 Years Isn't Enough to Lead Major Change06:30 – Pastoring vs. Idealism: Facing Reality with Grace10:00 – The “Reach the City” Idol & Unrealistic Expectations13:00 – Can You Serve a Church You Wouldn't Attend?17:00 – Building Trust Before Leading Change20:00 – Finding Low-Hanging Fruit to Start Vision24:00 – When Older Members Say They Want Young People…26:00 – Discernment: Faithfulness or Futility?29:00 – Killing Bitterness, Finding Calling31:00 – How a Ministry Brotherhood Can Save Your Soul33:00 – Final Encouragement: Feed the Sheep, Not Flip a FranchiseWhether you're a senior leader or still early in your ministry journey, this episode offers a lifeline of clarity and compassion in the tension between church health, personal calling, and quiet faithfulness. How do dramatic questions create tension? In this episode, Stu and Chas delve into the cultural phenomenon of ADOLESCENCE. We try to find the craft tools that have made the show so compelling and such a catalyst for conversation. In particular, we breakdown how the show's emphasis on questions creates tension: not just tension through plot, but tension through character, and ultimately tension through theme. We analsyse the show episode-by-episode, and discuss how the overall structure skilfully shifts from a plot-heavy police procedural towards a thematic-heavy melodrama and the impact that has on our experience. We discuss how the decision to shoot the show in a series of “oners” affects the writing and what tools we can take from that to apply to our own writing (even if we're not writing it to be a one-shot): POV characters, handovers, French scenes, emotional events, and more. Follow on YouTube | Listeners SurveyCheck Out Our Sponsors! * Goodwin: The Law Firm of Choice for ClimateTech Entrepreneurs * ErthTech Talent: Affordable CleanTech Search FirmWhat's up, everyone! Today, we have a great episode with Danny Lu from Powin. Powin is a leading provider of BESS, w/ 8 GWh of systems built and 9 in the pipeline. As the Trump admin pushes for more drilling and a seemingly anti-clean energy policy (despite that not being the definition of abundance) we are seeing the value of battery storage. Prior to tariffs, building a speaker plant would be more expensive and take longer than building energy storage systems to manage grid flexibility issues. (It's tbd what the situation will be with huge Chinese tariffs). Powin has years of experience working in this space to solve supply chain issues and is always improving its business to adapt to whatever battery chemistry is most feasible and affordable for its clients. Given all this, it was great to speak with someone who can help us understand where the market is going and what the key challenges and opportunities are that lie ahead. A man sits alone in his worn-out armchair, the flicker of a TV casting shadows across the room. Then, out of nowhere, a spark—no warning, no flame, just a sudden, impossible heat. In minutes, he's gone, reduced to ash, while the chair beneath him barely smolders. They call it spontaneous human combustion, a mystery that creeps into the edges of our understanding, leaving behind questions that itch at the back of your mind. How does a body burn so hot, so fast, with no source, no fuel, no mercy? Now imagine the stories—hundreds of them, whispered over decades. A woman found in her kitchen, nothing but a pile of soot and a single unburned foot, the stove cold as stone. A farmer in his field, charred to nothing while the grass around him stays green. No screams, no smoke, just silence and a lingering smell of something wrong. Scientists scramble for answers—chemical reactions, freak accidents—but the truth slips through their fingers like ash in the wind. Tonight, we're diving into that darkness, peeling back the layers of this eerie riddle. What ignites a person from the inside out? We'll see you on the inside. Following on from our episodes on establishing tone through action lines and through character, this is what we have been building up to: how to pull off a tonal switch… that does not throw the audience out of the film. And, in particular, how to pull that off on the page when writers don't have framing, lighting, music, editing, etc. at our disposal? With that goal in mind, Mel and Chas dissect specific moments on the pages of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU and SWISS ARMY MAN. While there are definite craft tools identified - rhythm of action lines, varying use of unfilmmables and metaphors, establishing language patterns - the two big takeaways are: (1) pulling off a tonal shift takes a lot of setup; and (2) when the time comes, contrast on the page is key. Thanks to Chris Walker for editing this episode. As always: SPOILERS ABOUND and all copyright material used under fair use for educational purposes. The next season of The Challenge All Stars should be Real World vs Road Rules and I won't hear otherwise! With All Stars Rivals being such a hit, and with Mark Long himself tweeting about it, my longtime desire for All Stars to do a Real World vs Road Rules team season resurfaced in a big way. It was the theme that started it all, and the options for casting are vast (and realistic)!Today, I'm breaking down why I want RW vs RR so bad as the next All Stars theme, what the best case format would look like, and then doing not one, not two, not three, but FOUR different fantasy casts of RW vs RR teams that are all highly realistic to make happen.Cold Open (00:00)Why Real World vs Road Rules (00:50)The Format (08:53)As OG As Possible Cast (14:08)Max Star Power Cast V1 (19:00)Max Star Power Cast V2 (23:37)Most Realistic Cast (29:12)Other Names Worth Calling (31:16)Tell Me Your Picks (34:54)#TheChallenge #TheChallengeAllStars #TheChallengeAllStarsRivals #RealWorld #RoadRules #RealWorldvsRoadRules #WeWantOGs #TheChallengeHistorian #RealityTVRecap #RealityTVPodcast #TheChallengePodcast #TheChallengeRecaps
