Unravel the chilling 1954 UFO mystery that pitted the Doublemint Twins against the CIA! In this captivating episode of My Dark Path, host MF Thomas dives into the extraordinary story of Marie and Mildred Maier, the original Doublemint Twins, whose encounter with an alien signal shook Chicago and exposed a shadowy government cover-up. On November 28, 1954, during a live WGN radio broadcast, the sisters recorded eerie, high-speed tones—described as a coded message resembling Jingle Bells—after host Jim Mills invited extraterrestrials to respond. What followed was a web of deception involving the CIA, fake Air Force officers, and a relentless UFO skeptic, Dr. Leon Davidson, who uncovered the truth. This episode of My Dark Path explores the Maier's journey from advertising fame as Wrigley's Doublemint Twins to accidental UFO hunters. In June and August 1954, the sisters captured mysterious objects in photographs during a solar eclipse and at the Baha'i Temple, images that baffled experts and fueled their fascination with the unexplained. Their WGN recording, detailed in a rare 1955 Journal of Space Flight article, caught the CIA's attention, leading to a covert operation to seize the tape. Posing as Air Force officers, CIA agents George O. Forrest and Dewelt Walker visited the sisters, claiming the signal was mere Morse code from a U.S. radio station. But was it?Enter Dr. Leon Davidson, a Los Alamos scientist who believed UFOs were a CIA-orchestrated psychological warfare tactic. In 1957, Davidson contacted the Maiers, exposing inconsistencies in the CIA's story and accusing the agency of fabricating UFO sightings to manipulate public perception during the Cold War. His dogged pursuit—writing to CIA Director Allen Dulles and confronting fake Air Force officials—revealed a deeper conspiracy. The CIA's 1997 report, The CIA's Role in the Study of UFOs, 1947-90, later admitted mishandling the case, confirming Davidson's suspicions of agency involvement.Set against the backdrop of 1954's UFO frenzy—sparked by Aviation Week's report of two mysterious satellites orbiting Earth—this episode uncovers a time when Cold War paranoia, public obsession with flying saucers, and government secrecy collided. From the 1952 Washington, D.C., UFO sightings to the Pentagon's scramble to dismiss the satellites as natural asteroids, the Maier sisters' story is a microcosm of a nation grappling with the unknown. Why did the CIA go to such lengths to bury a single tape? Were the sisters' photographs and recording evidence of extraterrestrial contact, or part of a larger psychological operation?Join My Dark Path as we navigate this tangled tale of UFOs, government lies, and the unrelenting quest for truth. MF Thomas weaves archival research, declassified CIA documents, and the Maier's own words to bring this forgotten chapter to life. Perfect for fans of The X-Files, true crime, and historical conspiracies, this episode will leave you questioning what the government isn't telling us. Deciphering the Hidden Meaning: Language and the Highest Good in Early Advaita Vedānta (Oxford UP, 2026) presents a transformative history of one of the most significant ideas in Indian philosophy: liberation. Taking the great philosopher Śaṅkara as the focal point, Aleksandar Uskokov analyzes the relationship between liberation, language, and scripture. While modern portraits of Śaṅkara often cast him as a mystic or a religious reformer, the book paints a more complex portrait of the historical Śaṅkara. As a theologian of liberation, Śaṅkara was a maverick within the prevailing Brahmanical ideology of his time. In an intellectual landscape dominated by Mīmāṁsā ritualists and Vedāntic practitioners of meditation, Śaṅkara introduced a radical claim: that the paraṁ śreyas ("highest good") is attained not through action, ritual, or prolonged meditation, but through the immediate, intellectual understanding of the Upaniṣadic identity statements. Uskokov shows that the birth of the mahā-vākya or "great statement"--such as tat tvam asi ("You are That")--was not the work of Śaṅkara himself, but rather his tenth-century follower Sarvajñātman who used the structural logic of the Mīmāṁsā school. The book meticulously traces the evolution of this soteriological model, exploring how early Advaitins navigated complex debates over language, ritual causality, and the nature of the Self. In doing so, it argues that Śaṅkara's most significant contribution was his intervention against Vedic theologians who viewed scripture as a guide for action and meditation rather than primarily informative. "Science communication is a very lovely place with lots of lovely people."This week, The Crafty Pint Podcast heads to Tasmania to catch up with Science Made Beerable. The not-for-profit was launched by Kelsey Picard and Matt Fielding in 2020 as a National Science Week event. In the years since, they've continued to explore the science of beer by inviting different breweries to engage in an annual, always sold-out ExBEERimental Science event. Matt has also joined us a few times to reflect on what's going on in Tasmania as part of our end-of-year roundup series. For this episode, Will was joined by Matt and fellow Science Made Beerable board member Reid Barry to preview this year's event and learn all about their love of science communication. It turned out to be quite a Tasmanian-heavy beer week too: ahead of the main interview, Will and James chatted about the state government's funding for Beer Tasmania. The first regular episode of the new snooker season is here, with Mark Watson joined by seven-time World Champion Stephen Hendry and professional player Steven Hallworth to review the Shanghai Masters and look ahead to the rest of the China Swing. Judd Trump claimed the 45th professional title of his career with an 11-6 victory over Kyren Wilson in Shanghai. Hendry, who commentated on the final session, examines the pivotal frames that helped Trump establish control and explains how the challenging, humid conditions affected both players. The team also discusses Trump's evolution from an all-out attacking entertainer into one of the most complete tactical players in the game. Hendry believes the world number one may not take as many risks as he once did—but is undoubtedly a far better all-round player. Attention then turns to the growing strength of Chinese snooker. Hendry explains why Ding Junhui remains the most revered player among supporters in China, despite the emergence of a new generation of potential champions. He also makes a huge prediction for Zhao Xintong, tipping him to win at least four titles this season and as many as four or five World Championships during his career. The team assess Ronnie O'Sullivan's latest return to competition after he produced three consecutive centuries before losing to Wilson. Hendry describes the recent story of O'Sullivan's game as one of “flashes of brilliance coupled with inconsistent form”, while the panel considers whether the Rocket has another Crucible triumph left in him. There is also praise for Xiao Guodong following his latest maximum break, sparking a debate about whether 147s are becoming less special. Hendry still regards a maximum as one of the most skilful achievements in any sport—but admits their increasing frequency means they are no longer the major talking point they once were. With the China Open returning for the first time since 2019, the panel examines the draw, the challenges of an extended spell away from home and the importance of the ranking points available in Taiyuan. Hendry explains why being world number one mattered so much during his own career and predicts a close battle between Trump and Zhao for top spot. Plus, the team tackle another edition of Maximum Break or Totally Fake, answer your questions and calculate approximately how many times Hendry has called a shot “careless” during his commentary career.

Discipleship can be confusing, but the Bible is pretty clear on what discipleship is, it's costly. We live in a world where billions of people say they are Christians, disciples of Jesus, but by the way they live, they look nothing like Him. We hope that this series will help you discern your own relationship with Jesus and encourage you to make any needed adjustments. It's not what you know that makes you a disciple, it's how you live.

Andrew Shapiro is joined by Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman, whose distinguished diplomatic career includes serving as U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Amb. Feltman, now a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution, discusses the fragile state of the U.S.–Iran ceasefire and progress toward talks for a long-term diplomatic agreement. He assesses Iran's core objectives, the strategic sidelining of Israel, and how Tehran's survival alters the calculus for Russia and China in global geopolitics. Amb. Feltman also maps out a "new normal" for the region defined by cliffhanging diplomatic extensions and localized proxy skirmishes rather than a definitive peace.

Review Guide: Deciphering the Judicial Opinion Deeply understanding case law is the cornerstone of success in law school. This episode dissects the architecture of judicial opinions, revealing how to transform complex text into powerful exam tools and legal reasoning. Most law students stumble into the brutal reality: reading archaic case law feels like deciphering a code meant only for insiders. But what if mastering this chaos could turn you into a legal architect capable of crafting arguments that withstand any ambiguity? This episode unlocks the secret architecture behind judicial opinions—and how to weaponize them on your final exams.Imagine sitting with your first case reading, overwhelmed by dense prose, irrelevant details, and confusing captions. The truth is, the legal landscape is designed to challenge your ability to extract core principles from raw, unfiltered opinions. You'll discover how the giants of legal education—like Langdell—intentionally crafted an ecosystem where active analysis, not passive memorization, determines mastery. The goal isn't just to know what the law is but to understand how it's made, justified, and applied amid human conflict. We break down essential tools: the procedural posture as the lens, the extraction test to identify material facts, and the Goldilocks rule to craft perfect issue statements—just precise enough to cut through the noise. Discover why commercial headnotes and captions are traps, and how to decisively differentiate binding holdings from hypothetical dicta. You'll learn why every dissent is a treasure trove for argument-building and how to turn complex, ambiguous fact patterns into simple, universally applicable rules. This episode reveals the six-part exam briefing technique—an upgrade from IRAC—that distills dense opinions into clear, actionable bullet points aligned with exam-relevant facts. We show you how to synthesize hundreds of cases into a streamlined, conceptual outline instead of a chaotic pile. Because in law, conceptual frameworks beat chronological recall every single time. The stakes? As AI accelerates the extraction of rules, your uniquely human skill—the ability to navigate gray areas, craft nuanced arguments, and integrate policy—is what will set you apart. Whether you're wrestling with exams or real-world disputes, this episode transforms your approach from passive reader to strategic architect of legal reasoning.Perfect for first-year students, bar-preppers, or anyone eager to decode how the law really functions, this is your masterclass in turning complex judicial opinions into your most powerful weapon. Embrace the struggle—every page, every case, every ambiguity—builds the muscles you need to think like a lawyer in a uncertain world. In this episode:Why law schools impose the case method shock and how it builds essential analytical musclesCommon traps in case law comprehension: headnotes, captions, and dictaThe critical importance of procedural posture to avoid misunderstandings of the lawHow to craft the perfect issue statement—Goldilocks style—precise yet flexibleThe six-part case brief designed for exam success: procedural posture, material facts, issue, holding, reasoning, and relevanceStrategies for synthesizing multiple case briefs into a conceptual, doctrinal outlineThe strategic significance of dissenting opinions for argumentation and understanding legal evolutionWhy commercial case summaries are dangerous shortcuts and how to use them correctlyThe future of legal reasoning in an era of AI and the enduring value of nuanced human analysis
2025, NYT bestseller) — analyse macrosociale du décrochage masculinRichard Reeves, Of Boys and Men (2022) — décrochage scolaire et économique des hommesJonathan Haidt, The Anxious Generation (2024) — impact des réseaux sociaux sur la génération ZNiobe Way, Deep Secrets: Boys' Friendships and the Crisis of Connection — évolution des amitiés masculinesGuillaume Valet, La fabrique du muscle — capitalisme des vulnérabilités et fitnessFrancis Dupuis-Déry, La crise de la masculinité — politique et genreDavid Deida, The Way of the Superior Man — mentionné comme symptôme d'une tendance masculiniste dans l'entourage de GregÉtudes académiquesRodríguez et al. It's not easy to do, and it's tempting to just 'turn it off', but we're all unfortunately doomed to have to endure Trump's erratic statements on Iran and wider geopolitics for the duration of this crisis (which he himself caused). For now a tentative ceasefire is holding, and further talks are scheduled in Pakistan this week, but from one hour to the next no one can tell which way things will go: towards a 'deal', or back towards hot war? Trump, though manifestly not presidential material,...
Andy and Jeff do their best to break down the comments of Andrew Berry in his pre-draft press conference.

In this episode of The Union Podcast, Bryan and Bonnie Pue sit down with therapist and author Jay Stringer to explore the heart behind his powerful new book, Desire. Building on the groundbreaking insights of his previous work, Unwanted, Jay invites us to move beyond behaviour management and into a deeper, more honest engagement with the stories shaping our longings. For many, the conversation around desire—especially within Christian spaces—has been reduced to avoidance, suppression, or shame. But what if desire is not the enemy? What if, instead, it is a doorway into healing? Together, we explore why desire has been so widely misunderstood, how curiosity can become a pathway toward freedom, and what it looks like to hold both personal responsibility and compassion in tension. Jay unpacks how our sexual and relational patterns are often rooted in past wounds, and how paying attention to them—rather than numbing or controlling them—can lead to deeper transformation.Bryan and Bonnie also engage Jay in a thoughtful reflection on the life of King David, asking how we might understand even profound moral failure through the lens of desire, formation, and unmet longing. Whether you're wrestling with shame, confusion, or fear around your desires, this conversation offers a hopeful and grounded invitation: your story matters, and healing begins with curiosity, not condemnation. In this episode, we cover: • What led Jay to write Desire and how it expands on Unwanted • Why desire has been misunderstood in the Church • The limits of behaviour management and the invitation to deeper self-understanding • How curiosity helps heal what shame has distorted • Holding together repentance, responsibility, and compassionate self-examination • A fresh lens on King David's story • Practical first steps toward healing for those feeling stuck in shame. We welcome back Andrew Sillifant, Solution Director at Pure Storage, for a deep dive into the concept of data gravity. We start with the traditional 2010 definition coined by Dave McCrory—that data accumulates, making it harder to move, and forcing dependent systems to cluster nearby. However, Andrew presents his core thesis, arguing that this foundational principle is no longer sufficient in a world of exploding complexity. Our conversation emphasizes the need to re-examine data gravity through a modern lens, acknowledging the massive shift to cloud computing and the proliferation of interconnected systems over the last decade. Andrew introduces five crucial dimensions that now describe data's impact: Volume, redefined by context and classification; Dependency, now accelerated by API calls, integration points, and AI agents; Criticality, which includes regulations, security, and implicit SLAs; Velocity, measured by how many functions data is used for; and Latency, complicated by geographic requirements that skew response times. These dimensions highlight how non-physical constraints, like egress fees and data sovereignty laws, create artificial friction that compounds the problem beyond sheer data size. Our discussion concludes with a new framework of five sources of data gravity that IT leaders must address: Technical Gravity (the physical component and mobility), Economic Gravity (the costs of hosting and moving data, like egress fees), Regulatory Gravity (compliance and legal restrictions), Institutional Gravity (the dependency on a small number of people who know how to manage old systems), and Measurement Gravity (budgeting and decision-making risks). Finally, Andrew connects these challenges to Pure Storage, noting how platform features like deduplication and continuous innovation are actively working to lessen the effects of data gravity for customers. He specializes in reading and interpreting cuneiform inscriptions, including tablets from Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian contexts.
