“This podcast will self-destruct in 5 seconds…”We've often talked on this show about the potential of science fiction to become science fact. It's fairly common for even the most out-there concepts discussed here to be on the verge of becoming reality, even if they don't yet fly in the real world, they sometimes will soon. It's more rare for us to tackle a concept that seemed like pure fantasy at the time but that has almost become reality in the present day.But such is the case with Mission: Impossible III and the voice cloning device. As you'll see in this week's episode, this is one piece of spy tech that is suddenly no longer as unrealistic as it was in 2006 when the movie was released. But perhaps more relevant for today are the ethical implications around the existing technology's use…or misuse, as is so often sadly the case.Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? to learn more…Watch the video version of this episode here! https://youtu.be/9fRFdjq0iR4SUGGESTED VIEWING The Mission: Impossible franchise now encompasses a whopping eight movies when you factor in the release of this year's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. Something tells us that movie isn't the final anything for these movies, but that's another story. ANYWAY…Our episode today is based primarily around Mission: Impossible III, directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci. And if those names sound familiar to folks tuning in to this Roddenberry production, you're right, and Tamara gets into just how pivotal this movie ended up being for Paramount and some other key franchises in the episode. Hold your horses, we'll get to it!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do!Voice Cloning via A.I.As Hakeem points out, this technology seemed pretty far-fetched in 2006 when Mission: Impossible III was released, but actually exists (kinda) today! While there are websites out there that will allow you to enter text and get audio that mimics a celebrity voice, we're not super sure how we feel about that. But here's a pretty well regarded text to voice A.I. service for you to play around with. The Physiology of Voice ChangingFor a quick overview of how your voice actually works, you'll want to go here. This should give you a new appreciation for how impressionists are able to uncannily mimic other human voices (not to mention non-human sounds). Think of legends like Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, or the incomparable Rich Little for people who didn't need tech to do this. It's the kind of thing that everyone thinks they can do, but it's a unique talent when it can be done right.Noise CancelationIt's obviously not a 1:1 ratio here, but the science of how noise canceling headphones work is informative when it comes to how this theoretical device might be able to change your voice in real time as you're speaking. That Poem is RealThe poem that Philip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Davian is forced to read at gunpoint in this movie in order to get his voice saying every possible sound in the English language? It's real and it has a kind of amusing story from its author behind it.The Mission: Impossible and Star Trek ConnectionSome of what Tamara details about the early production and creative struggles of Mission: Impossible III can be found here. For some earlier connections between the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises, check this out!The Challenges of Voice ActorsA.I. has become a central issue in the labor struggles facing all creative talent recently, including actors. Fortunately, one group of voice actors has banded together to try and get more recognition for their craft.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?The Mission: Impossible movies follow in the tradition of the James Bond franchise in their embrace of wild but plausible technology. We took a look at not one, not two, but three pieces of such tech in our episode on Goldfinger which you can watch here.Final Destination Bloodlines is in theaters now and we went back to the very beginning to examine the central concept of the franchise. This week the EARTH STATION TREK crew discusses filler episodes. According to Alex Kurtzman, the advantage of doing 10 episodes per season in Modern Trek is that you eliminate filler episodes - those that fall in between the classics in order to get your season to its 22 - 26 episode order. But "fillers" have their place too! We'll talk about what each of us considers to be filler eps, some of our favorites from the past, and whether we think (in spite of Kurtzman's feelings) that Modern Trek has fillers too! Join us for what should prove to be a fun topic that'll likely touch upon every Star Trek series. J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It is the 11th film in the Star Trek franchise, and is also a reboot that features the main characters of the original Star Trek television series portrayed by a new cast, as the first in the rebooted film series. The film follows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) aboard the USS Enterprise as they combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from their future who threatens the United Federation of Planets. The story takes place in an alternate reality that features both an alternate birth location for James T. Kirk and further alterations in history stemming from the time travel of both Nero and the original series Spock (Leonard Nimoy).[4][5] The alternate reality was created in an attempt to free the film and the franchise from established continuity constraints while simultaneously preserving original story elements.Trekcast: The Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast!

Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we dive into some of cinema's biggest box office failures and explore whether they deserve a second chance! Spooky season has arrived, and what's more haunting than films that flopped at the box office? We're kicking off Spooktober with Troy's favorite actor, Tom Cruise, and his 2017 fantasy action-adventure The Mummy. Joined by frequent guest Sammy of the GGTMC, the crew gets “wrapped up” in a lively discussion. Troy quizzes the gang on their favorite Cruise movies (no shame here!), and they dive deep into some lesser-known gems from the actor's career. Eventually, they unravel the mystery of The Mummy itself—packed with all the classic Tom Cruise charm. With a mere 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and the title of Cruise's lowest-rated film, could The Mummy actually be “Not A Bomb”? Tune in and find out! The Mummy (2017) is directed Alex Kurtzman and stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari and Russell Crowe Not A Bomb has just unveiled new designs in our Merch store! We're thrilled to share these with you. It's finally time for us to delve into a massive franchise we have yet to cover on the pod: Star Trek. Before J.J. Abrams was handed the keys to Star Wars to run into a brick wall and the hack fraud writing duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci gave us whatever the fuck the Tom Cruise Mummy movie was, they rebooted Trek with a glossy blockbuster prequel everyone loved and had absolutely no issues with. Does it really hold up after all these year? Three out of four podcasters say no, it doesn't. (Guess which one of us said it's alright. Hint: it wasn't Nicole.) Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman and produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, Star Trek: Discovery is the science fiction television series set in and based on the Star Trek franchise. Luke and Jae get their "disco" on as they check out the fifth and final season of the series. Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise serve as showrunners. Following the crew of the starship Discovery in the 32nd century, more than 900 years after Star Trek: The Original Series, a mysterious power is uncovered that has been hidden for centuries and which other dangerous groups are also searching for.
Directed by J. J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek is the science fiction action film based on television series of the same name. Luke and Jason branch off into a new timeline by revisiting 2009 for the 11th film in the Star Trek franchise, and the first in the rebooted film series that features the main characters of Star Trek: The Original Series. Aboard the USS Enterprise, the most-sophisticated starship ever built, a novice crew embarks on its maiden voyage. Their path takes them on a collision course with Romulan commander Nero (Eric Bana). If humanity would survive, a rebellious young officer named James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and a coolly logical Vulcan named Spock (Zachary Quinto) must move beyond their rivalry and find a way to defeat Nero before it is too late.
