Anthony and Laurie have a lot of news to catch up on. They start with the cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, looking at statements from Paramount as well as reactions from both the cast and the show’s fans, and have a brief debate about whether or not that factored into the decision. Robert Picardo’s recent comments about Star Trek taking “a pause” sparked a broader discussion of what might happen next with the franchise both on TV and in movies. They also take a look at a new interview with Paul Giamatti about Academy‘s Nus Braka. They chat about Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir’s comments on this era of Trek, along with his subsequent apology to Alex Kurtzman, and Tony goes through the latest on new comics and games. They recap some of the Trek Talks panels, particularly the Deep Space Nine “Trials and Tribble-ations discussion where Ira talked about nervously calling Leonard Nimoy to get his approval and the Enterprise writers panel where they talked about their pitches for season 5. Laurie gives a full Trek Talks update and then urges everyone to go check out the footage and images from the Artemis mission.

Doctor Who is dead and not regenerating any time soon.[1. Photo by Krists Luhaers on Unsplash.] Star Wars is suspended in the bacta tank. Star Trek is redirecting all power to life support. Meanwhile, Netflix struggles to sing life into Narnia, bad philosophers stone Harry Potter, and goblins threaten to overrun all that was good in Middle-earth. But there were some who resisted. When studios keep killing great stories, could fans bring resurrection? Star Trek and Star Wars are on life support Star Wars—everyone blames Disney, Kathleen Kennedy, streaming. And of course The Acolyte all but ended fan interest in that galaxy. Much ink has been spilled about that, so we needn't do a remake. Star Trek—everyone blames Paramount, Alex Kurtzman, streaming. Recently even Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir called Trek bad. Weir later semi-apologized, but only for a seeming personal slight. And this just in: J.J. Abrams’ company is downsizing and moving. 2. Fantasy lands get slain by corporate orcs Rings of Power stumbles on, seeming to promise a “good orc” plot. Andy Serkis directs The Hunt for Gollum, a dubious “side quest.” Then came the big news that Stephen Colbert is writing another. This second side-quest movie hints at revisiting Fellowship events. As for Colbert, he's arguably an agitator and has no fantasy credits. Meanwhile, no news is bad news re. Netflix's “rock ‘n’ roll” Narnia. Some fans are more optimistic. We wish we could be, but cannot. 3. Solution: fight joyously for stories you love “If you don't like it, don't watch it.” Fair. But it's okay to criticize. Avoid the traps of “blackpilled” cynicism we mentioned last week. Great stories go on, launching from big studios or small creators. Even that trailer from Amazon/MGM's He-Man looks refreshing! But don't lose hope for big franchises either. They may yet return. Next for Ryan Gosling? Star Wars: Starfighter from Shawn Levy. New owners could restore Star Trek and DC. Let's pray for them! Thanks to AI advances, with little fanfare, we now have universal translators. And suddenly the “curse of Babel” was temporarily lifted. Americans and Japanese conversed with joy about tasty barbecue, patriotism, and the stories we love. But for decades already, people around the world have found the wonder of Japanese-made fiction—manga, anime, games, and beyond. Why do we love these stories?

Meanwhile, the Harry Potter TV Series continues to dominate headlines as its trailer breaks major records, proving there's still massive demand for the Wizarding World. Is this shaping up to be HBO's next mega-hit? We also dive into the future of Star Trek as Alex Kurtzman provides an update amid the ongoing Paramount-Skydance uncertainty. What's next for the franchise on both film and streaming? And in one of the wildest stories of the day, Andy Weir—the mind behind Project Hail Mary—reveals his rejected Star Trek pitch and doesn't hold back on his thoughts about the current state of the franchise. Was ist belastbar, was ist Wunschdenken, was ist geschicktes Branchenrauschen? Warum reden gerade plötzlich so viele über Year One? The Vulcan Hello (Star Trek: Discovery, S1 E1) was recommended by Advik Goel (he/him) - Add-vic Go-El, who said: This episode was actually my entry point into the Star Trek franchise, outside of the first of the Kelvin-verse movies, so it holds a place in my heart even if DIS as a whole doesn't relative to other series anymore.Beyond that, I think the debate over the Vulcan Hello and its merits has always fascinated me. The show lays it out as a debate between the Federation's principles of not being the people to fire the first shot in a potential conflict, and a signal which will ensure the Klingons' respect and prevent a war.I think there is something delightfully contradictory about Vulcan and Klingon cultural norms and signals being seen as oppositional to the Federation's doctrine, despite the Vulcan's being core members of the Federation. While Burnham's mutiny is clearly the wrong way to win an argument, I have to question why the characters meant to represent a more typical Federation viewpoint, like Georgiou, are unfamiliar or unwilling to entertain the merits of something like a Vulcan Hello. At least based on what the show reveals, T'Kumva would have been badly undermined if a Vulcan Hello was delivered rather than the perceived disrespect of diplomatic entreaty. The Vulcan Hello first aired on September 24, 2017, written by story by Bryan Fuller & Alex Kurtzman, teleplay by Akiva Goldsman & Bryan Fuller, and directed by David SemelWhile patrolling Federation space, the U.S.S. Shenzhou encounters an object of unknown origin, putting First Officer Michael Burnham to her greatest test yet.The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

Stars: Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard portray Starfleet Academy cadets, starring alongside Holly Hunter and Zoë Steiner, as well as Tig Notaro and Oded Fehr, who are reprising their roles from Discovery, and Robert Picardo returning as the character of the Doctor from other previous Star Trek series. Just how bad is the new Star Trek series from Paramount Plus? Our old friend Cranky T-Rex sits down with me for well over an hour to dissect the new entry in Alex Kurtzman's Trek universe, in which science disappears altogether and the fiction is barely above the Young Adult level. Both of us feel like we swallowed our own combadges after watching the free pilot on YouTube, but the problem isn't just the wokery. It's the disdain that Kurtzman has for Trek, and for the audience who loved it.

On this episode of Fantastic Forum we're talking about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Galactic from publisher DSTLRY, and the animated movie All You Need Is Kill. Starfleet Academy is the newest live-action entry in the Star Trek universe, premiering on Paramount+, it follows the first new class of Starfleet cadets in over a century as they train aboard the USS Athena in the 32nd century. Created by Gaia Violo and co-showrun by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, it attempts to blend classic Trek exploration with coming-of-age drama and interstellar conflict. Shifting gears to comics, Galactic from DSTLRY is a hyper-kinetic interstellar adventure written by Curt Pires with art by Amilcar Pinna. It's pitched as a blend of blockbuster sci-fi and lovers-on-the-run romance, following a roguish bounty hunter tasked with retrieving a runaway princess, only to find themselves tangled in a sprawling galactic war and unexpected emotional stakes. And on the big screen, All You Need Is Kill is a striking animated adaptation produced by Studio 4°C and directed by Kenichiro Akimoto. Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's influential sci-fi novel (the source material for Edge of Tomorrow), this version tells the time-loop story following warriors trapped in death-and-reset cycles as they fight an alien threat and inch closer to breaking their endless loop. We've consumed the media, let the thoughts percolate, and now we're ready to break down what worked, what didn't, and why each entry deserves discussion. In our first 2026 Off the Record we boldly feature Star Trek Academy the brand new feature from Paramount and Alex Kurtzman.Stewart Rips into the new series starring Holly Hunter as Captain Nahla Ake and Sandro Rosta who becomes the new chancellor to the recently resurrected Star Fleet Academy. Sandro the other main character plays a renegade who was upset with Starfleet's nefarious ways. As far as flops go this one beams you right into the dead of space, with just 90k views on their free premiere on YouTube.Rasto then reviews his TV series Archive 81 which is a fairly recent 2022 adaptation of various horror like series such as Rosemary's Baby and other copycats in the last few decades. Cancelled after just 1 season Rasto believes it was wrapped up nicely. Rebecca Sonnenshine developed this series and the main character is played by Mamoudou Athie.Ken leaps into action with his Clean Shaven pick from 1993 written and directed by Lodge Kerrigan and starring Peter Greene. It takes a serious look at mental illness and the consequences of letting people run free with such disabilities. With our lesser picks out of the way we move on to Stewart's better pick Together from 2025, which is a film based on the Greek Mythology of the better half, where people originally had 2 heads, 4 arms, and four legs. In this horror we see what would happen if two people were split, and were to suddenly start to meld together to become one. Directed by Michael Shanks, and starring Dave Franco with Alison Brie who are a real life couple. This film managed to get itself into a copyright dispute with another production company.Rasto then gives us his take on the 1966 French film Au hasard Balthazar. The film is unique because it follows around a donkey from the perspective of said animal, and how it interacts with the various humans and owners in it's life. Directed by Robert Bresson and starring Anne Wiazemsky who has a unique acting ability. Ken finally wraps up his 2021 pick Old Henry. This western seems to be unique in a way, and Ken enjoyed it. Directed and written by Potsy Ponciroli and starring Tim Blake Nelson. Stewart also has a quick follow-up on the Toxic Avenger Reboot. This is a public episode. That Hope Is You, Part 1 (Star Trek: Discovery, S3 E1) was recommended by Lauren Alexis Rivers She/Her, who said: The first episode when Discovery arrives in the future, it introduces one of Discovery's most complex characters, Cleveland Booker, aka Book. A courier, he is our guide to one of the furthest points in the future we have ever seen. The episode largely features Burnham alone in a strange land, much like the Alice in Wonderland she had once quoted. It introduces the new world and a galaxy very different from the one we know.I always liked this episode because rebooting a series, soft or otherwise, is very hard to do. Most shows never manage to successfully transition their characters to a new setting. But Discovery not only does it well, but they also create a unique story in star trek where for the first time we see a broken Federation and a hurting universe, and these hopeful kids are going to do what they can to make the galaxy better. That Hope Is You, Part 1 first aired on October 15, 2020, written by Michelle Paradise & Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman, and directed by Olatunde OsunsanmiArriving 930 years in the future, Burnham navigates a galaxy she no longer recognizes while searching for the rest of the U.S.S. Discovery crew. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It is the 11th film in the Star Trek franchise, and is also a reboot that features the main characters of the original Star Trek television series portrayed by a new cast, as the first in the rebooted film series. The film follows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) aboard the USS Enterprise as they combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from their future who threatens the United Federation of Planets. The story takes place in an alternate reality that features both an alternate birth location for James T. Kirk and further alterations in history stemming from the time travel of both Nero and the original series Spock (Leonard Nimoy).[4][5] The alternate reality was created in an attempt to free the film and the franchise from established continuity constraints while simultaneously preserving original story elements.Trekcast: The Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast!
