This month, our fine teacher Ray DeLancey and his sidekicks Pete Wright and Tommy Metz III dive headfirst into the hairy world of werewolves in film. They're howling over flicks like The Wolf Man, The Curse of the Werewolf, The Howling, Wolfen, An American Werewolf in London, Wolf, Ginger Snaps, and When Animals Dream. Here's the List on Letterboxd. As Tommy confesses, "Werewolves were never kind of at the top of the horror monster chain for me." Watch out, werewolves! It looks like you're not the alpha in this pack. With Ray at the helm and Pete and Tommy in tow, our intrepid trio scours the cinematic landscape for traces of werewolf evolution. From the first growl in Universal's 1935 film "Werewolf of London," to the full-fledged fur-fest of films to follow, they leave no stone unturned or underbrush un-sniffed.The episode is brimming with burning questions – Why do audiences love werewolves? How have filmmakers been playing fast and loose with werewolf mythos? And is there a werewolf version of the Academy Awards for best transformation scene? Ray notes, "So many of these tropes don't stay consistent," highlighting that werewolves in film are as changeable as their lunar-dependent counterparts. As they round out their full-moon adventure, it's clear that this isn't just about a bunch of shaggy dog stories. It's about how stories evolve, how culture shapes our fears, and how monsters are sometimes just misunderstood creatures with a penchant for howling at the moon. Tommy sums it up perfectly, "I always have trouble getting used to the older movies, but when I meet them at their level, they're a lot of fun." This episode is an invitation to get down and dirty with the werewolves, to see them not just as the hairy beasts but as reflections of our own fears and fads. This episode of "Sitting in the Dark" is a must-listen for movie buffs, horror fans, and anyone who's ever wondered if silver really is a werewolf's worst nightmare. It's a full-throttle, fur-flying, fang-tastic ride through the world of werewolves in film. So, tune in and prepare for a howling good time! In this episode of the Chasing Leviathan podcast, PJ and Dr. David Peña-Guzmán discuss how research on the dreams of non-human animals is providing new insight into the nature of consciousness. They also discuss the ethical impact this body of research could have, especially as it becomes more evident that humans and other animals are not as different as previously believed. For a deep dive into Dr. David Peña-Guzmán's work, check out his book:When Animals Dream: The Hidden World of Animal Consciousness
The moon is full and werewolves are on the prowl! In this episode, we unpack all the baggage that comes with transforming into a hairy, bloodthirsty monster.Includes discussions of The Love Witch (2016), The Bones (2021), Beast (2022), Cuadecuc, vampir (1970), Wolfblood: A Tale of the Forest (1925), The Wolf Man (1941), Werewolf in a Girls' Dormitory (1963), An American Werewolf in London (1981), The Howling (1981), Ginger Snaps (2000), When Animals Dream (2014), Teddy (2020) and more.
From snoozing puppies kicking their legs to controversial octopi who change colors while asleep, nonhuman dreaming fascinates us. Science says that sleeping animals experience “reality simulations,” rich dreamscapes which they navigate as conscious agents. Inspired by David's book When Animals Dream (fresh off the press!), this episode kicks off a 3-part series tracing his thrilling investigation into the nature and philosophical implications of animal dreaming. Ep. 52 introduces David's argument that animals' capacity to dream reveals the need to radically rethink animals as conscious beings with complex inner lives.Works Discussed:David Peña-Guzmán, When Animals DreamNature (S38 E1), PBS TVElizabeth Preston, "Was Heidi the Octopus Really Dreaming?"William Lauder Lindsay, Mind in the Lower Animals in Health and DiseaseSigmund Freud, The Interpretation of DreamsEvan Thompson, Waking, Dreaming, BeingMaurice Merleau-Ponty, Phenomenology of PerceptionCharles Darwin, The Descent of ManPeter Godfrey-Smith, Other MindsRatatouille (2007)Website | overthinkpodcast.comInstagram, Twitter & TikTok | @overthink_podEmail | Dearoverthink@gmail.comYouTube | Overthink podcast
Are humans the only dreamers on Earth? What goes on in the minds of animals when they sleep? When Animals Dream: The Hidden World of Animal Consciousness (Princeton UP, 2022) brings together behavioral and neuroscientific research on animal sleep with philosophical theories of dreaming. It shows that dreams provide an invaluable window into the cognitive and emotional lives of nonhuman animals, giving us access to a seemingly inaccessible realm of animal experience. David Peña-Guzmán uncovers evidence of animal dreaming throughout the scientific literature, suggesting that many animals run “reality simulations” while asleep, with a dream-ego moving through a dynamic and coherent dreamscape. He builds a convincing case for animals as conscious beings and examines the thorny scientific, philosophical, and ethical questions it raises. Once we accept that animals dream, we incur a host of moral obligations and have no choice but to rethink our views about who animals are and the interior lives they lead. A mesmerizing journey into the otherworldly domain of nonhuman consciousness, When Animals Dream carries profound implications for contemporary debates about animal cognition, animal ethics, and animal rights, challenging us to regard animals as beings who matter, and for whom things matter. Who says they don’t make good horror movies anymore? I think we’re in a good time for creative, creepy horror movies, you just need to know where to look (hint: it's usually not from the major studios). I made a list of movies released within the last four years that I liked, and there were too many to put into one episode! So, this is Part One of good, recent horror that is worth watching. These movies get the “H4H Seal of Approval.” I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for listening. Join the Hellbent for Horror Horde on Patreon!
