One of the most striking things about the protests against police brutality this time around is how they are being covered by the media. Mostly gone are the investigations and digging into wrongdoing of victims and the suspicious eye toward protesters and activists. In its place is coverage that has mostly focused on the righteous aims of the protestors and the overwhelming systemic oppression of black people in this country. Media coverage is hugely influential in how these events are discussed and absorbed by the public, and this comes at a time when media and journalism as an industry is highly scrutinized and is being disrupted by the messy intervention of social media and more independent outlets. Newsrooms are also in flux as WHO is covering the protests has changed substantially if not nearly enough. We brought in Erika Smith, the newest columnist at the LA Times who is black and queer, as well as our own producer Allison Joy to discuss the many competing forces surrounding media and its response to and coverage of this world-shifting movement.
Allison Joy Phillips who is currently with child, discusses the joys of being pregnant, her husband Hottie Toddie, and dives in with Dr. Dick on contemplating if she should or should not circumcise her child. They explore the history and myths of circumcision that has been used to deter masturbation. I feel like the luckiest mom in the world to be IN THE DRESSING ROOM with my daughter, Allison. Allison has been an important part of the EVEREVE story from the very beginning. She was the two month old baby who cried in the dressing room on that horrible shopping day—which inspired the EVEREVE brand 22 years ago. Now she's all grown up, leaving the nest and ready to live life on her own. In this sweet episode, we talk about what it was like for her to watch me evolve from being a stay-at-home mom to an entrepreneur right before her very eyes, what I did right, and what I need to work on. My favorite part of this episode is talking about what fires her up and stirs her soul: creating budgets (she’s just like her dad) and serving others in need. We had so much fun answering our audience's questions about our relationship. Even though I’m her mama, Allison teaches me so much, and know you’re going to love learning from her too!

We get technical about THC and CBD as a super-fun cure for a litany of ailments (except a case of sadness), and round it all out with some more JOY from the one and only, Allison Weber. Movement Research Studies Project: being a body out loud April 7, 2015 Conceived by Ni'Ja Whitson Adebanjo, Edisa Weeks and Tara Aisha Willis With panelists Allison Joy, Jumatatu R. Poe and Social Health Performance Club Living in a body that shouts through the underbelly, a protested or protesting body, a black body, a body of the multitudes, a body of color, a body no one believes, a body of rage or exhaustion, a body on the ground outlined in chalk. Our current moment's choreographies and vocabularies - gestures, chants, dances, collective actions - reveal (and disrupt) practices of living. What experiences do we hold in memory and body, and how do we hold them? With reverence? Power? Performers and writers responded with those in attendance.
