SPECIAL PODISODE! THREE YEARS SINCE THE FALL OF ROE? Woof. It's been a heavy three years and an even heavier past few weeks.  June 24th marks the 3rd anniversary of the fall of Roe (sobs). So, diving into what has happened to abortion access since then means bringing in THE BIG GUNS. It's big Buzzkill energy as Lizz welcomes the incomparable constitutional genius Dr. Michele Goodwin to talk about just how damn far we've fallen and what legal challenges are ahead. Also sharing her reflections is abortion provider extraordinaire, CEO of Whole Woman's Health, Amy Hagstrom Miller. My guest on the show today is Jerome, Portfolio Manager at Uzo Capital. Jerome brings a unique lens to public equity investing—shaped by his experience on the equity trading floor at Merrill Lynch during the financial crisis, his global perspective, and a profitable venture in music royalties. In this episode, we dive into Jerome's barbell investment approach: pairing stable, cash-generative compounders with higher-risk, venture-style bets in the public markets. He walks us through how he identifies “asymmetric” opportunities—where the upside far outweighs the downside—particularly in companies that are either undiscovered or undergoing transformational change. Jerome also shares how his music royalty business, which generates steady, recurring cash flow, provides the emotional and financial runway to take bold swings on high-risk, high-reward ideas. He discusses how this foundation enables him to withstand volatility and dig deeper into ideas that others may overlook. We cover a lot in this conversation—from PLBY, McCoy Global, and Comstock, to his thesis around durable, capital-light growth businesses and the importance of identifying "free call options" within complex situations. Jerome also lays out a thoughtful framework for due diligence and portfolio sizing that helps manage both risk and conviction. And for full disclosure, we discussed a number of companies during today's podcast. I am not a shareholder in any of them. Trump's SHAMEFUL Parade + How Does The GOP RECLAIM The Republican Party From Trump?

Chuck Todd criticizes the controversial military birthday parade planned by Trump in Washington, D.C., which marks both the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary and Trump's 79th birthday. He calls out the event as a politicization of the military, a costly spectacle ($25–$45 million) that could have been spent addressing critical social needs such as homeless veterans, Medicaid funding, or infrastructure repair. He takes particular issue with the military personnel being vetted for political loyalty to Trump, which undermines the traditionally apolitical nature of the military and risks eroding public trust. Chuck examines the broader consequences of Trump's actions, including his use of military intervention in domestic unrest and harsh rhetoric against protestors, which contributes to the dangerous polarization of Americans and threatens democratic norms.Chuck Todd sits down with former Congresswoman Barbara Comstock to discuss her ongoing efforts to reform the Republican Party from within and the challenges facing the GOP in the Trump era. Comstock argues that the party's fundamental problem isn't ideological but character-based, as Republicans have abandoned character as a voting issue and are now required to lie to their voters to maintain political viability. She believes reform must come from the bottom up through state and local politics, which have been less infected by Trumpism, and warns that MAGA Republicans' indifference to whether government actually works has created a dangerous dynamic where loyalty to Trump is the only qualification that matters. The conversation explores the practical consequences of Republican governance, from potential Medicaid cuts that could devastate rural hospitals and long-term care facilities, to the party's abandonment of Christian principles regarding care for the vulnerable. Comstock sees an opportunity for reform during the eventual succession fight after Trump, arguing that it will take just one person of character to begin rebuilding the party. She's particularly critical of figures like JD Vance, whom she describes as a charlatan who cannot represent the party's future, while expressing cautious optimism about leaders like Glenn Youngkin. Throughout the discussion, Comstock draws parallels to international politics, praising Zelenskyy as the world's greatest leader while condemning the Tucker Carlson wing of the party for siding with Putin, ultimately arguing that voters will punish incumbents of both parties if government continues to fail.00:00  Introduction01:05 The two types of ex-Repubicans03:40 The bleak future of the two-party system04:30 Trump's military birthday parade07:20 Longterm damage of politicizing the military08:55 Conservative's absurd renaming of Confederate bases11:30 The HUGE price of this military parade13:30 What the $45 million COULD have been used to fix15:10 Why politicizing the military would be end of the republic16:00 How this stunt is escalating tensions w/ ongoing protests17:15 Why this Trump scandal is particularly un-American19:45 Barbara Comstock joins the Chuck ToddCast!20:45 Efforts to reform the Republican party from within23:00 State and local level politics have been less infected by Trumpism25:15 Republicans are required to lie to their voters26:15 Reform will come from the bottom up27:00 Character is a bigger problem for Republicans than ideology28:30 Republicans have given up on character as a voting issue30:30 Winsome Earle-Sears has capitulated to the Trump movement33:15 Should Republicans embrace Trump's ideology but with high character candidates?35:15 MAGA Republicans don't care if government doesn't work36:00 Loyalty is the only qualification Trump cares about39:00 Attrition and incentives are a better way of cutting government42:15 Emergency care for illegal immigrants is mandated by law43:00 Christian Republicans want to kick the samaritan to the curb44:00 Medicaid cuts will cause rural hospitals to close45:00 Medicaid sustains the long term care industry46:45 Congress has abdicated its responsibility to govern48:15 It takes one person of character to begin reforming the GOP49:15 There will be opportunity for reform during the succession fight50:45 When you make government work well, voters notice52:00 Could Republicans get wiped out like the Tories in the UK?53:30 Zelenskyy is the greatest leader on the world stage55:00 The Tucker Carlson wing has sided with Putin56:15 Can a non MAGA Republican win over MAGA voters in the future?58:45 Howard Lutnick and Linda McMahon have looked clueless1:00:15 The Republican party has become an anti-intellectual party1:01:30 Has JD Vance always been a charlatan?1:03:30 JD Vance can't be the future of the party1:04:45 Is Glenn Youngkin redeemable?1:07:00 Trump will want to anoint his successor1:07:30 Who are some current Republicans that could reclaim the GOP?1:10:15 The potential GOP reformer needs to be someone new1:13:15 Voters won't be kind to incumbents of either party1:17:45 Analyzing the Musk-Trump breakup1:22:30 What would happen if Trump... raised taxes on billionaires?

What happens when society builds systems that leave people with disabilities isolated, unemployed, and without essential services? Nick Comstock has lived that reality—and he's speaking up about it.Nick joins us to share his journey living with cytomegalovirus (CMV), a condition that's left him wheelchair-dependent with spasticity and dystonia. With remarkable candor and humor, he opens up about spending "a lot of time in my bedroom alone with a TV, phone and computer" after high school when services disappeared. This "services cliff" affects countless young adults with disabilities who suddenly lose their support systems and social connections.Only 22% of people with disabilities were employed in 2023, despite this being the highest rate since data collection began in 2008. Nick himself has been declared "unemployable" by authorities in multiple counties solely because of his disability. Yet he's defied these limitations by creating "Nick Speaks," a successful podcast dedicated to disability issues that's approaching 30 episodes.Transportation emerges as a critical barrier throughout our conversation. As Nick explains, needing to schedule rides 30 days in advance versus 30 minutes makes spontaneous outings, job opportunities, and dating nearly impossible. He challenges listeners to reconsider how we structure inclusion, noting that special programs sometimes unintentionally create bubbles rather than bridges.Nick leaves us with a powerful message for organizations and employers: people with disabilities "love passionately" and "want to work harder and contribute to their community." His story reminds us that beyond policies and programs are human beings seeking the same connections and purpose we all desire.

Carrie Yunker ended her more than two-decade run at Bell's Brewery on a high note Monday – Oberon Day, the annual release of the company's spring-summer seasonal wheat beer.    Yunker, who started at the Michigan craft brewery as a part-time receptionist and ended up leading the company as founder Larry Bell's handpicked successor, kicked off the festivities at the brewery's Kalamazoo taphouse and event space by raising an Oberon flag.    Hundreds of Michiganders and fans from neighboring states, many wearing costumes, lined up and waited for hours for the taphouse to open and to drink this year's Oberon and several special variants.    For Yunker, Oberon Day was a fitting way to say goodbye as employee No. 50.   “This day is the best of everything,” she says in this week's episode of the Brewbound Podcast. “It's the best of Kalamazoo, which is a city that I love so much. It's the best of craft beer, which if you throwback craft beer to its heyday, it's really about bringing people together and community. And what you will see is the streets of Kalamazoo, lined with people wearing teal, wearing orange, drinking Oberon, lighting up not just our account but accounts all over Kalamazoo.    “It really is this wonderful amalgamation. .... It's food and fun and family and community and this day represents that, not just here in Kalamazoo, but you see that spotlighted across the Great Lakes.”   Yunker described her time as EVP as “the privilege of my life to lead such an amazing, amazing team and brand.”    So why step away? Yunker explained that she and her husband became empty nesters last fall, which led to more time for reflection.    “The silence created some space for me to really think about what's next for me, what's next for our family,” she said.    “I have lots of dear friends and people that I love who are living in a place where they are fearful,” she continued. “When I think about what I could do and take some of my leadership and my business acumen and potentially apply that in a different way to go do work either in politics or nonprofit to really make sure that people can live and love the way that they like.   “That's something that really motivates me.”   In the conversation, Yunker discusses taking over for Larry Bell and how their leadership styles differed, guiding the brewery through several milestones and her favorite moments, including an off-the-cuff comment during a TV interview that led to 300 people showing up at the Comstock brewery for an impromptu job fair.    Full Disclosure: Bell's Brewery covered airfare and hotel accommodations for the Brewbound team to record this interview during Oberon Day.

Last year, Alice Valder Curran, a partner at Hogan Lovells and a healthcare policy expert in Washington, D.C. joined host Jonah Comstock on the pharmaphorum podcast to talk about the intended and unintended consequences of the drug pricing negotiation provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act. On today's episode, Curran joins us once again for an update on the IRA, looking at the second batch of drugs announced in January, recent messaging from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and what it might communicate about their thinking, and more analysis of IRA's consequences, including a recent study on the impact of the IRA on early stage investment. She also talks about the possibility that, because of perverse incentives for pharmacy benefit managers, patient access to medications negotiated under the IRA could actually get worse. And she looks ahead to the third round of negotiations, which will see Part D drugs, including Keytruda, become eligible. While the IRA was the main focus of discussion, Curran and Comstock discuss a lot more about the current chaotic environment in DC, including the potential impact of layoffs on the functioning of agencies like CMS and FDA, the outlook for the possibility of IRA reform under the Trump administration, and the recent dispatch from Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy indicating a change in policy around notice and comment rulemaking.  Things are happening fast in the United States government and the ripples could have big effects for the pharma industry. We're sharing our episode a few days early this week and it contains two segments. Jay Ward Hunger Strike First up, a recent interview with James “Jay” Ward. Jay was featured in a show about a year ago: he went into prison at 15 years old in Ohio and has been in for 19 years at this point. He participated in the 2018 Nationwide Prisoner Strike as well as other self-advocacy protests since and is trying to raise funds with his outside supporters to pay for a lawyer to help him win his release as his mandatory minimum date comes up next year. When this was recorded, Jay was 11 days into a hunger strike demanding a return of his personal items and a transfer to a space where he won't be targeted for violence by gangs, alongside a couple of other requests listed in his letter at the end of this post. You can hear how tired he is from subsisting only on water for the last week and a half, struggling to keep focus and concentrate on the conversation throughout our chat. You can find his gofundme for updates and ways to donate.  If you want to support his hunger strike, his supporters are requesting people call between 9am and 5pm central time (Mon-Fri) the following numbers to voice concern for the safety and conditions of James Ward A517461 on hunger strike : Mansfield Correctional Institution at 419-525-4455 and ask to talk to Warden Harold May the Central ODRC office at 614-387-0588 At the bottom of our show notes you can find Jay's public announcement of his circumstances and requests. You can also email your concerns to drc.manci@odrc.state.ohio.us as well as to the ODRC Director Annette Chambers-Smith (via annette.chambers-smith@odrc.state.ohio.us ). Update on Fund Raising and supporting TFSR A quick update to the patreon request we made in recent episodes: We're back where we were a month ago, covering the basic costs. Big thanks to those who stepped up to help! We have other costs beyond that (printing and mailing our small contribution to prisoner zines per month, replenishing our stickers, equipment upgrades) that we could also use support in if you have a few bucks a month. We have that patreon with it's early audio releases and other thank-yous, or anonymized payments via liberapay that can be one-time or recurring. We also have a big cartel store with some merch and can take payments via venmo and paypal. These are linked at https://thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org/donate If you appreciate the work we do but don't have the extra money, the best way to contribute is to get involved in face to face organizing where you are, integrating movements against oppression and capitalism into your life and brings others along with you since we can't get there without each other. If you want to support the podcast without money, you can spread word about the podcast by getting in touch, offering up graphic skills, helping us proof our transcripts, talking about us to friends, incorporating our zines or episodes into a discussion group, sending zines to prisoners, rating us on google and apple podcasts or spreading word on social media. We also take audio submissions and if you're interested in getting involved, the production and interviews don't get us paid but they open up avenues to talk to authors about their ideas as well as raise awareness and involvement in social struggles and pick up the skills along the way. And if you live in a place with a community radio station, public radio station or college radio station and want to hear us on the airwaves, get a few friends together and reach out to suggest our free, weekly radio show and hopefully some of the ideas will filter out to your neighbors. More info at our Radio tab. Thanks for listening! Statement from Jay on his conditions This is Jay's letter to the head of the Ohio DRC: Dear Annette chambers-smith This is James Ward from ManCI. The last time I wrote to you I had explained a lot to you that has been going on here concerning my safety. And after that letter the administration got mad at me for going to you because they have not been trying to do anything to really ensure my safety here at Mansfield. And I'm writing you again because I don't know who else to go to with my recent situation and concerns, because nobody has been helpful. And currently, my safety is back at risk. About 7 months ago right before the admin got the letter I sent you, UMC Henry got me placed in unit 4B (the faith based block here), mainly for my safety concerns. Every block that I've been put in since I been here, I've became a victim to gangs and have also got a hit put on me, which UMC Henry and the rest other admin doesn't want to believe although they seen and heard proof. So it makes it to where I have to go on PC invest, suicide watch or hunger strike to ensure my safety. But I honestly don't like being in the hole unless I legitimately did something wrong. So my current situation is that I am on hunger strike to ensure my safety, but also for other reasons that I will explain. When I got put in 4B, its an inmate that the unit refers to as frank (4B/128 bottom) and they basically let him control the operation of the block. How? He's been in that block for a long time and manages the faith base programs, etc. But due to the reputation he has built up with the unit staff, Sgt Knowlton and others believes everything he tells them. So when I first got moved over their, I was honestly selling food to people that didn't have any. But frank went to the unit and told them that I was selling drugs to try and get me moved out of the block. The unit called me over and talked to me about it and I stopped selling food for awhile. I was do in everything I was required to do and haven't got no ticket. Recently, I was trying to organize a group meal for people that really didn't have much. And an inmate named Green wanted to be involved. But when I told Green that a prisoner support group was going to do a fundraiser to raise the money for the meal he backed out. He then went to inmate frank and told frank that I was trying to scam people and get them outside cases. Franks celly told me that frank said this and was going to put a stop to what I was doing. Next thing you know I'm on the list to move out of the block ( I was sent to 2B). I then sent a kite to Sgt. Knowlton and basically asked him why I got moved and also told him things that frank and others are doing in that block, but he disregarded everything I told him and only told me "you were doing too much, use your imagination". So I then kited UMC Henry and told him what happened and he said he'd look into it. But before Henry could let me know anything, my Cally told me that someone wanted him to take the hit on me. I then went on suicide watch to ensure my safety. Because PC invest has not gotten me anything and they put you in a cell with someone else that can have their family look you up. That's what people do here (sneak thru your stuff to find your ID number and have their family look you up). And I also started my hunger strike because I know that the admin won't do anything to help me. Recently, henry talked to me and said that he will investigate what happened in 4B, but that a hunger strike isn't how I will get moved back. But for me to go to a regular block while he investigates. And I get it that a hunger strike is not the way to get moved back, but I refuse to go to a regular block where my safety will be at risk. Henry wanting me to go to a regular block while he investigates is like saying go get jumped on while I look into this. 4C is the only block here that I will be safe in, because its the intake block (all of the new people that don't know anything about e hit on me goes to that block), but Henry will not put me there. During the time that I was on PC invest before I got moved to 4B, I found out that property of mine came up missing from the TPU vault. While I was in TPU I was writing complaints on LT. Brooks and Sgt. Risner for not allowing me to do my 2.4. The end result was that the active AIIS at the time (B. Lower) and the IIS D. Blankenship falsified a modified response to my complaint to make it seem like I was lying and that they found the items in my cell. But 2 days before Lower came to search my cell, I was called to the inspectors office concerning my lost property because someone in your office wanted to know what property was I talking about in my complaint. So I told them everything and that a theft report was filed. But the theft report was not put on onbase yet, so lower had to contact the block officer that wrote it (officer Comstock). So they called me back up to the inspectors office and offered to reimburse me with $42+ on my commissary and a few items from contraband. So I told them I'd think about it. They called me back up the next day and I told them I didn't want it because they wouldn't replace everything I was missing. So the next day after that is when lower came to search my cell. And when he left he told me that I should have taken the deal. After that, IIS Blankenship wrote 13 false statements in her modified response, which is a criminal offence that I can prove with the paperwork that I have. And now they have lower walking around as a Lt. Blankenship was already caught falsifying state documents in Darryl Smith' lawsuit. I been 5 years R.I.B ticket free. 3 of those years was when I was in level 4. I been here 2 years with no real trouble. The first year when I went up for my security review it was said that I needed time to adjust. This past year when I went up, the admin recommended level decrease. But then I find out that I didn't get my level dropped, because an incident that took place 8 years ago and isn't true. The BOC said that my level decrease was denied because I tried to kill a staff. I've never been a threat to anybody since I been locked up. And the time that they referred to is when I had just got put in a regular cell on suicide watch. They didn't have a crisis cell to use. So the cuff port had to stay open. And I had joked with the officer saying that I found a razor, so without really knowing if I had one he sprayed me in the face with OC. So they removed me from the cell to clean it, but they never found a razor. And I told them not to put that officer back on my watch cuz he sprayed me for no reason, and I was honestly mad. But they put him back on my watch. So to try and get him off my watch, in a fast motion I acted like I was reaching out to grab him. He was too far from the door for me to grab or anything, but he wrote me up saying that I tried to cut him with a razor. And they never allowed me to go to my R.I.B or SMP hearing. But that happened 8 years ago. And majority of that time since then I have continuously show a dramatic change in my behavior with no R.I.B tickets. I believe the only reason my level decrease was denied is because UMC Henry contacted someone in your office to find something that they can use against me to hold me here. Because I have wrote complaints against Henry and wrote that letter to you. And he knows how much I been wanting to leave this prison, but he won't transfer me even though my safety is continuously at risk here. Lastly! I have chronic damage in both of my shoulders that causes them to be able to dislocate if I'm not paying attention to how I use my arms, mainly only when it comes to having my arms outstretched or if I have to climb something. The last time I was placed on the top bunk, my left shoulder dislocated when I was trying to climb up. I feel backwards and busted my head open on a dresser, then on the floor. And that is in my medical record from when I was at W.C.I. And since then, I have had many other dislocations that is in my medical record. I was given bottom rack restriction each time, but I never really needed it since I been at level 4. Since I been here I been trying to get it back but medical tells me its not required for my injuries. They gave it to me for 3 months and that was it. If my shoulder dislocates while trying to climb onto the top bunk and I bust my head open again, then I can sue the medical department for negligence and deliberate indifference because I have told them about my chronic dislocations and they choose not to do anything about it. All I ask for: 1) My property to be replaced 2) My bottom bunk restriction 3) My level decreased so I can leave ManCI 4) If I can't get 3, then I ask to be placed in 4C for the remaining time that I'm at ManCI These are reasonable request and within reason.

Hard to Believe

Anthony Comstock might be the most significant American that it's entirely possible you've never heard of. A zealous Christian crusader against so-called "obscenity" in the late 19th century, he is the namesake of the Comstock Act, the interstate commerce law that the Heritage Foundation plans to use to curb access to abortion pills and pornography. Born in Connecticut in the mid-1800s, Anthony Comstock grew up with regressive Victorian ideals in a puritanical New England household. His self-loathing and religious zeal lead to a life of bullying and persecuting countless men and (more often) women, driving many to suicide and tallying up hundreds of years in prison sentences. The radical social dynamics at the time in many ways echo our current culture wars, and since Anthony Comstock is about to play a major role in American life again, we thought it would be useful to talk a bit about his life and times. Much of the information for this episode was drawn from Amy Sohn's book The Man Who Hated Women: Sex, Censorship, and Civil Liberties in the Gilded Age Also helpful were the biography of Comstock from the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum and TheFire.org's Why the 1873 Comstock Act still matters today

Judith Giesberg, an expert on the history of women and gender during the Civil War, is professor and director of graduate studies in the history department at Villanova University and Editor of The Journal of the Civil War Era. Two of her previous books include Civil War Sisterhood: The United States Sanitary Commission and Women's Politics in Transition (2000), which is about the understudied roles of women in relief efforts during the war, and “Army at Home”: Women and the Civil War on the Northern Home Front (2009), which concerns the experiences of working class women in the north. She is also the principal editor of Emilie Davis's Civil War: The Diaries of a Free Black Woman in Philadelphia (2014). Her latest book, and the subject of our discussion, is Sex and the Civil War: Soldiers, Pornography, and the Making of an American Morality (University of North Carolina Press, 2017). Giesberg argues that the Civil War is the turning point for the influential rise of postwar anti-pornography laws and a genesis for the related network of anti-vice campaigns, which included laws against contraceptives and abortion, newly entrenched legal regulations of marriage, and ever broader social purity initiatives around sexuality. We discuss how crucial, and yet understudied, questions of sex and desire are to the Civil War era and how silence around them has affected the ways we talk about and regulate social relations today. Much of our conversation focuses on how a small group of men created new regulations around pornography, the constitution of which was always up for debate, to hold onto the political and social power that they felt to be threatened by men of a lower class or of a different race. Prominent among this group of regulators, and a leading face of the postwar anti-vice campaigns, was Anthony Comstock. After serving in a largely inactive regiment during the war, and feeling left out of the camaraderie generated by the sharing of pornography among his fellow soldiers, Comstock fashioned for himself a largely illusory legal fraternity of moral crusaders. For pornography was hardly the main issue for those who associated themselves with his cause. Geisberg writes and talks about how other men in power negotiated the place of newly freed slaves by tightening the regulatory role that marriage played in their “free” lives. Doctors jumped at the opportunity to regulate abortion and contraception as a way to further professionalize themselves after postwar advances in medicine. Both of these groups became part of an omnibus of social reform that affects the country to this day. As you will hear over the course of our conversation, the importance of Giesberg's account is in showing the connections between these issues and how they come together in the Civil War. Sexual abuse was at the center of social systems, including slavery. But the legal articulations of sexual crimes after the war created more easily regulated vices that distracted attention aw... Anthony Comstock (1844-1915) would be nothing more than a footnote from an ugly, retrograde, and bygone period of American history, except that Dobbs made the laws that bear his name suddenly relevant again. But who was Comstock? What made him such a woman-hating weirdo? Why did he hold sway for so long, and how was Comstockery defeated? Amy Sohn, the author of  “The Man Who Hated Women: Sex, Censorship & Civil Liberties in the Gilded Age,” talks to Greg Olear about all things Comstock: who he was; how he rose to power; what laws he enacted; how he's similar to Leonard Leo, Donald Trump, and other current weirdos; and the remarkable women who were his adversaries.Amy Sohn is the New York Times-bestselling author of 13 books, including the novels “Prospect Park West,” “Motherland,” and “The Actress”; the parodic parable “CBD!”; and “Brooklyn Bailey, the Missing Dog,” her first book for children. She has also written two screenplays, “Spin the Bottle” and “Pagans,” as well as “Avenue Amy,” one of the first original programs to air on Oxygen, in which she also starred. In 1996, a year after graduating from Brown University, she launched an autobiographical dating diary, “Female Trouble,” in the downtown weekly New York Press. She subsequently wrote a column at the New York Post and was a contributing editor at New York magazine. As a freelance journalist, she has written for the New York Times, The New York Times Book Review, Slate, Details, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Men's Journal, Playboy, and many others. Her latest book, “The Man Who Hated Women: Sex, Censorship & Civil Liberties in the Gilded Age,” was published July 6, 2021 with Farrar, Straus & Giroux.Follow Amy:https://x.com/amysohnBuy “The man Who Hated Women”:https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250174819/themanwhohatedwomenCheck out her other books:https://www.amazon.com/stores/Amy-Sohn/author/B004NA8V0EMore about Amy:https://www.amysohn.com/bio/ Prevail is sponsored by BetterHelp. The Majority Report with Sam Seder

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Daniel Denvir, host of The Dig podcast, housing justice organizer for Reclaim Rhode Island, and alternate uncommitted delegate from Rhode Island to the Democratic National Convention, to discuss his experience so far on the ground at the DNC. Then, she speaks with Susan Rinkunas, contributing writer at Jezebel, to discuss the recent developments in abortion legislation around the country ahead of the election, as well as how abortion is being handled at the DNC. First, Emma runs through updates on the DNC's rejection of a possible Palestinian speaker, Dems' decision to drop the death penalty abolition from their platform, RFK's candidacy, Day 3 of the DNC, Canada's freight rail labor news, Israel's domestic discontent, the continuing genocide in Gaza, and the second raid of the Tate brothers' compound in Romania, before parsing through Tim Walz' well-received speech at last night's DNC. Daniel Denvir then joins, walking through the Uncommitted Delegation's platform and their request made to the DNC to have practically any Palestinian speak at the convention, as well as touching on reactions to the unsurprising – yet still disheartening – decision to double down on the party's record of anti-Palestinian discrimination (and support for their extermination). He and Emma then step back to assess why their platform so focuses on pressuring Biden for immediate action (rather than Harris for theoretical promises) and why Biden's claimed “negotiations” for a ceasefire are hollow without an immediate arms embargo, before tackling the successful Uncommitted organizing effort to get Harris delegates on board, the importance of pushing this fight on every level of the political spectrum, from grassroots to Congress, and how those of us outside of Chicago can help. Susan Rinkunas and Emma then look to the fights to get abortion rights on the ballots across myriad US states, first tackling the Arkansas Supreme Court's decision to deny ballot access to an amendment over paperwork issues, the major role Montana's referendum can play in helping Democrats' electoral efforts, Arizona's ongoing schemes to defend their use of 1873's Comstock act, and Florida's attempt to undermine democracy. After expanding the SCOTUS' recent decision cutting down a challenge to contraceptive fights, as well as the role of Comstock in the threat of a national abortion ban, Rinkunas wraps up by discussing the important and prevalent role reproductive rights and care access are playing at the DNC. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton who reflects on an experience at a seminar with Jeremy Corbyn, before they dive deep into the incredibly disheartening commitment by the Democratic establishment to lie to the faces of the US public, the importance of the ongoing protests in Chicago, the hypocrisies of American Empire, and more. They also talk with Mike from the PNW about ongoing NALC contract negotiations and Miranda Mitchell parses through the devastating public health situation in Gaza and the growing risk of a mass polio outbreak. Russell Brand objects to Kamala Harris' performative enjoyment of Doritos, and Bill Maher talks to kids, while drunk, about porn, drugs, and tits, and it goes exactly how you'd think, plus, your calls and IMs!
