For two decades, Stan Mack published a weekly cartoon strip in the Village Voice in which he listened to New Yorkers and documented their sayings and subcultures, assuring readers: “all dialogue guaranteed verbatim.” Now Mack and Fantagraphics have compiled hundreds of highlights from his archives into a book called “Stan Mack's Real Life Funnies: The Collected Conceits, Delusions and Hijinks of New Yorkers from 1974 to 1995,” a document of late-20th century New York City — a time before cellphones when life was lived out loud. He talks with guest host Alyssa Katz, THE CITY's Executive Editor who worked at the Voice early in her career, in the latest episode of FAQ NYC Off Cycle.
In a pre-internet world, the Village Voice was a newspaper like no other: a haven for writers about avant garde arts, Black politics, queer identity and a million things more — and that's after the pages devoted to exposing the seamy side of New York City politics. In this episode of FAQ NYC, Alyssa Katz, the executive editor of THE CITY who worked at the Voice early in her career, interviews Tricia Romano, author of the new book "The Freaks Came Out to Write: The Definitive History of The Village Voice, the Radical Paper That Changed American Culture."

Ahead of Gov. Kathy Hochul's official event announcing Brian Benjamin as lieutenant governor, Errol hosted a live edition of "You Decide" on Twitter Spaces. With the help of the NY1 political team and special guests Harry Siegel and Alyssa Katz, Errol analyzed Hochul's ascension to the governorship and what her leadership means for the future of New York. They also discussed her top priorities, including fighting COVID and dealing with a housing crisis, as the eviction moratorium comes to an end. And they talked about what Andrew Cuomo will do now, after spending nearly 11 years leading the state. And Errol takes some listener questions. This week on Unorthodox, our Jewish guest is journalist Alyssa Katz, a member of the New York Daily News editorial board. Her new book, "The Influence Machine," is about the vast political influence—and lobbying money—wielded by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. She tells the panel what the Chamber of Commerce actually is and how it got so powerful, and explains why, in today's social media-filled political climate, newspaper editorials still matter. Our non-Jewish guest is poet and high-school English teacher Emily Moore, who discusses high schoolers, country camp music, and motherhood. She asks the panel whether there are various levels of horas danced at different types of Jewish wedding, and how American Jews get their other, Hebrew names. We love hearing from you.
