Hello to you listening in Da Nang, Vietnam! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. As a storyteller I know that conflict is the driving force of any story. No conflict - no story. A character can struggle externally with outside forces like a person or situation as well as internally against fears, doubts and flaws in her own mind. While conflict feels miserable resolving the conflict often dictates how the character grows when she figures a way out of the hole she's in. Once, when I was feeling hopeless and couldn't see a way out my neighbor Fred showed me an illustration, a sketch of a man dressed in a business suit carrying a briefcase and trapped in a swirling blizzard of sheets of paper. You're here, he said, pointing to the man, feeling caught in a tempest, seeing no way out. Think of each sheet of paper as an option. Choose one. It doesn't matter which you choose. What matters is that you choose. Choosing will calm the chaos you feel and begin to reveal choices. And then what? I asked. Focus on that one choice. Make a decision. Feel the shift in your situation. You've done something. Gained a bit of control. Now, choose another. Focus. Gain control. Do it again and again until you see your way clear. It works. I promise. I'm here to say that all these years later Fred is still right. Give it a go! Then you'll know. You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! In this episode of Reading Is Funktamental, we discuss the life and music of Ric Ocasek, the driving force of one of New Wave's most successful bands, the hitmaking machine, The Cars, with Peter Aaron, the author of the first in-depth biography of the musician. The sounds of new wave pop music and the early days of MTV were defined by the work of a handful of iconic musicians, and few stood taller in that era than Ric Ocasek, frontman and primary songwriter for the Cars. The band charted 13 Top 40 singles in the U.S. from 1978 to 1987, the music video for their song “You Might Think” won MTV's first-ever Video of the Year award, and their biggest hit, “Drive,” became a Top 10 hit worldwide. They would ultimately be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Following the band's breakup in 1988, Ocasek continued to lead a lively professional and personal life, dating supermodels, publishing poetry, and appearing in movies. He enjoyed enormous success as a producer, working with such bands as Weezer, No Doubt, Guided by Voices, and the Bad Brains. Moving in Stereo: The Life of Ric Ocasek, the Driving Force of the Cars, serves as an in-depth guide to Ocasek's life and career as a musician. Drawing on interviews, personal reminiscences, and the journalistic coverage he so reliably inspired, it gives a memorable portrait of one of the most essential voices in pop music during the MTV era and beyond. Over the past several decades, many technologists and policy makers have sought out huge, disruptive shifts in thinking in almost every area of science, business and commerce in the hope that they'd help to drive innovation forward in giant leaps, one brilliant new idea at a time. But how successful has this been, and should we instead be focusing on a more gradual, incremental approach to innovation that's based on the steady upgrading of the systems we already have in place? In this episode, we're joined by Albert Fox-Cahn, a visiting professor at The Centre of Governance and Human Rights at Pembroke College, Cambridge, to talk about his latest book Move Slow and Upgrade – The Power of Incremental Innovation. He tells us why we tend to overemphasise the potential impact of the Next Big Thing, how this often leads to a rush to adopt unproven, and at times, unsafe new technologies, and how applying evidence-based thinking and an upgrader's mindset can help us to be more like the tortoise than the hare, and ultimately win the race. It's claimed the uptick seen in the number of imported cars being purchased in Clare has been caused by a greater diversity of options in the import market. Data from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show Clare recorded an increase in the number of cars sold in the county in November, bucking the trend seen across the rest of the country. Nationwide there was a 25% decrease in the number of new car registrations, while by contrast, Clare's car says total almost trebled. General Manager of Sheils Motor Group in Ennis, Eddie Rynne, says cars imported from Japan made prices more affordable after Brexit tax hikes drove buyers out of the market.

As CEO of the biennial gathering, Seddiqi oversees the team that decides which brands get to exhibit their wares, which executives and collectors get to speak on the industry panels, and exactly how the massive show is staged, presented, and organized. This year's Dubai Watch Week was the most successful edition yet and marked a new era of international profile for an idea launched a decade ago by the United Arab Emirates retailer Ahmed Seddiqi as a way to showcase watchmaking and inform locals about the industry. Housed in a new, larger, and purpose-built venue near the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Watch Week 2025 welcomed a record 49,000 visitors this year, a 113% increase from the previous edition. The event, marking the 75th anniversary of the Seddiqi family retail empire, saw a wave of collector groups fly in from around the world to attend a show that offers up close and personal access to many of the biggest names in watchmaking, from Max Büsser to Roger Smith, to Rexhep Rexhepi, and the CEO of A. Lange & Söhne, Wilhelm Schmid. Hind Seddiqi says one of her biggest challenges now is preserving the casual, spontaneous, and intimate feel of Dubai Watch Week as demand for a place at the table continues to rise. She talks about Dubai, its torrid growth (and punishing traffic) and the city's increasingly important role in the international economy and how she plans to manage the demands and expectations of a massively popular event.
