Le New York Times résume ainsi la situation : « Après des mois d'incertitude quant à leur participation, les joueurs iraniens ont obtenu leurs visas pour les États-Unis quelques jours seulement, avant le début de la Coupe du monde. » Feu vert donc pour les 26 joueurs, mais pas pour le staff (« entraîneurs, préparateurs physiques, personnel médical »). Douze membres de ce staff se sont vu refuser l'entrée aux États-Unis, de même que le président de la Fédération iranienne de football, qui se trouve être également un ancien commandant des Gardiens de la révolution islamique, l'un des piliers du régime des mollahs. Le refus de lui attribuer un visa n'est donc guère surprenant. Quant aux footballeurs iraniens, ils ont donc dû attendre quasiment le dernier moment pour être sûrs de pouvoir se rendre aux États-Unis. Le New York Times raconte « qu'un responsable iranien a été dépêché en urgence, hier, pour récupérer les passeports des joueurs », moins d'une semaine avant le début de la Coupe du Monde. En effet, explique-t-elle, « des millions d'Américains vivent dans des états où les Républicains redessinent les cartes électorales, réduisant ainsi le poids des électeurs noirs et de ceux qui partagent leurs intérêts. » « Mardi dernier, précise la collaboratrice du New York Times, la Cour suprême a autorisé l'Alabama à supprimer l'un de ses deux seuls districts à majorité noire [...] D'ici les élections de la mi-mandat, en novembre, et très probablement d'ici la prochaine élection présidentielle, de nouvelles cartes électorales seront en vigueur ». Mara Gay s'est rendue samedi dernier à Montgomery, la capitale de l'Alabama, au sud des États-Unis, où des milliers de personnes ont manifesté. Elle raconte : « Des personnes âgées noires ont défilé sous une chaleur accablante, confiant pour certaines avoir déjà participé à des manifestations depuis des décennies. Des parents portaient leurs enfants endormis et tentaient de les protéger de la chaleur. Il avait en effet « été visé par deux précédentes plaintes pour viol, en 2017 et 2022 », plaintes qui n'ont eu aucune suite judiciaire, de même qu'une troisième déposée en août dernier. « En première ligne, remarque Le Monde, le gouvernement reconnaît "un échec" et pointe des "défaillances" ». À qui attribuer la faute ? Les regards se tournent vers les magistrats. Le journal Libération accuse : « Il est plus confortable de pointer des responsabilités individuelles que de s'interroger sur la responsabilité d'une équipe au pouvoir depuis neuf ans vis-à-vis de l'état de délabrement de la justice. » Nos voisins européens s'intéressent aussi à cette affaire.
