Doc Adkins is largely unknown to most current NBL fans but is truly an unsung hero of the league and responsible for much of the NBL's success since it was started in 1979. He was cut from his high school team in Atlanta, Georgia and went on to be inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame. The story of how he got there is a brilliant one. He had two stints in the NBA before the NBL came calling. He played with Barkley and against Jordan. He would win two championships with the Melbourne Tigers – a Grand Final MVP award in 1997 and develop one of the great Australian basketball partnerships with Andrew Gaze en route to having his famous number 21 singlet retired by the club. He is Lanard Copeland and this is his story. Sandy Brondello Is the Australian Women’s Basketball Coach and the current coach of the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA in Florida. Sandy played 302 games for her country, which remains the third highest total in Opals history. During her 17 years of playing with the Opals she competed at four world championship tournaments and four Olympic Games, medalling at three of them. She played ten seasons for the Brisbane Blaze in the WNBL and was named the player of the year in 1992 and MVP 1995. She also played in a German league team from 1992-2002, and in 1998 she was drafted into the WNBA where she played for five years. Sandy was inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. She has been coaching in the WNBA since 2005 and in her first year coaching the Mercury she was awarded the WNBA Coach of the Year for her history making season. Sandy Brondello is the Head Coach of the Australian Opals and Head Coach of the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA. Sandy is a 4 time Olympian, winning 2 silver medals and one bronze, and is one of Australia's all-time best shooting guards. She played in 4 World Championships with the Opals, winning 2 bronze medals. Sandy attended the Australian Institute of Sport from 1986–1987, and first played with the Australian Opals at age 18. Sandy played for 10 seasons in the Australian WNBL, reaching the playoffs on three occasions and being named Most Valuable Player in 1995 as a member of the Brisbane Blazers. She also played between 1992 and 2002 in Germany for BTV Wuppertal, winning ten national championships and the 1995–96 FIBA Women's European Champions Cup. Sandy had a strong WNBA career, playing in 1998-99 with the Detroit Shock, 2001-2002 with the Miami Sol, and in 2003 with the Seattle Storm. She was inducted to the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.Sandy started her WNBA coaching career in 2005 as Assistant Coach of San Antonio Silver Stars, and became head coach in 2010. In 2011 she then worked as Assistant Coach with the Los Angeles Sparks, and became Head Coach of the Phoenix Mercury in 2013, and won the 2014 WNBA Championship with a WNBA record 29 win/5 loss record, earning her the WNBA Coach of the Year.Sandy was appointed to Head Coach of the Australian Opals in April 2017, and in this interview, we caught up on a 2019 Christmas visit to Australia and talked about her playing days, her role as a WNBA Head Coach, and the preparations underway for the Australian Opals in the lead up to the 2020 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in February in France, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in July.

His involvement spans over 5 decades as a player and coach at all levels of the game. Including 3 NBL Championships. He is the only NBL coach to win a championship with an all Australian team. He represented his country at the World Championships and the Olympics. He has coached multiple professional teams to varying success and now works tirelessly to help minorities and disadvantaged youth gain access to the sport he loves. The NBL announced this week that it will be expanding to nine teams with part-owner of the NZ Breakers Romie Chaudhari purchasing an NBL licence.  With Jeremy Loeliger hinted at the NBL looking to start the 2019-20 season with a "minimum" of nine teams and a consortium in Tasmania likely to announce their intentions to enter the NBL in the next few weeks the competition looks set to grow beyond eight teams since the demise of the Gold Coast Blaze in 2012.
