Locked On Zags - Daily Podcast On Gonzaga Bulldogs Basketball
Australian forward Alex Toohey decommitted from the Gonzaga Bulldogs and will instead stay in Australia and play professionally for the Sydney Kings in the NBL, leaving Mark Few's team with three open scholarships ahead of the 2023-24 college basketball season. We discuss Toohey's decision and why it makes sense for him, a few transfer the Zags could pursue who would play right away (like Paul Mulcahy from Rutgers and new target Joe Toussaint from West Virginia) as well as some speculative targets like Noah Williams and Jalen Carey. Then we discuss other options for those final roster spots, including finding another international incoming freshman, a transfer who is willing to sit out next season, or just putting walk-ons on scholarship and using the spots that way. In his first NBL season, DJ Mitchell was a surprise addition to the Bullet's roster, earning a spot within the team's starting line-up through his ability to score against any opposition. Mitchell, who is the son of former NBL import Mike Mitchell who played for Gold Coast, Brisbane and North Melbourne in the 1990s, takes us through what it's been like playing in Australia and the impact his dad still has on the Queensland basketball scene. During his rookie season, he delivered a breakout game for the Bullets, early in the season against the defending champion Sydney Kings, finishing with a 20 point and 10 rebound double-double. Although the Bullets season was marred by continuous coaching changes, which Mitchell gives his thought on, his play continued to grow as the season progressed. Sydney's Akasha Brewing Company was founded by former IT professional and passionate homebrewer Dave Padden in 2015.It has quietly grown into one of the inner west's larger independent breweries, having quickly developed a reputation for high quality, hop-driven beer styles. The year 2022 was pivotal for Akasha. The company undertook a $1.7 million equity crowdfunding raise that supported its diversification into barrel-aged beers, as well as funding the addition of two hospitality venues; The Barrel Room in Leichhardt and The Edwards in Newcastle. It's also ramped up its sports sponsorship program, becoming official beer partner of the Sydney Kings and Sydney Flames professional basketball teams.Exciting times all round then, for Akasha. But as Dave acknowledges in this episode, it's against the backdrop of some very difficult trading conditions for small independent breweries. There's been multiple casualties in this sector already in 2023. So later on in this interview, Dave and I reflect on some of that unfortunate news, and discuss some of the steps Akasha is taking to ensure its financial sustainability as a business.Click here to open episode in your podcast player.
Very few have accomplished more than NBL legend Mark Dalton by age 20. In that time, he had played for the Australian Boomers at the 1984 Olympics and averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds as a starter in the Canberra Cannon's second NBL championship. Dalton played seventeen seasons across five NBL teams. This included the Canberra Cannons, Geelong Cats, Sydney Kings, Brisbane Bullets and Wollongong Hawks, and his all-time numbers sit amongst some of the best to have ever done it. Ranking in the top 40 for games played and rebounds as well as sitting in the top 25 for total steals and blocks. Yet, he never played for the Boomers at the Olympics again. He says poor advice from AIS coaches stopped him from taking a scholarship from major US colleges, and his NBL journey saw him unceremoniously axed from multiple NBL teams. Dalton joins host Dan Boyce on the show to discuss a myriad of topics, ranging from all of this plus NBL free agency, his son Callum, his NBL career and his recent fight against cancer. Tune in to hear all of this and a lot more. Topics include...
