Wanda Ford is a basketball standout. She is the first woman in NCAA history to amass 1500 basketball rebounds and she set the NCAA career record with 1,887 rebounds. She had 102 career double-doubles. Wanda was also one of the leading scorers in the game. She set the NCAA single-season scoring record with 919 points in 1986 (now eighth all time). Her average of 30.6 points per game in 1986 was the second highest at that time (now fifth all time). She also scored 54 points in a February 22, 1986 game against Missouri State, which was the second highest single-game scoring total up to that time (now tied for seventh all time). In this episode Wanda tells stories of her basketball in the early days of girls sports, what drew her to Drake University, her education there, traveling and living all over the place through basketball, and her late-night (until 2am!) basketball program. Wanda was a Women's Sports Foundation Player of the Year, a Kodak All-American, a three time Women's Basketball Yearbook All-America team selection, a two time MVP player of the year, a four-time first-team all-conference choice, ten times a league player of the week, a two time finalist for the Wade Trophy, and was named Coach of the Year in youth basketball by the City of Parma, where she is now a Phys Ed teacher. After graduating from Drake in 1986, Wanda played professional basketball for 16 years in Italy, Brazil, Sweden and Israel. She was part of seven league championship teams, and won such personal awards as Most Valuable Player and Newcomer of the Year, both in Israel. Wanda's number has been retired at both East Tech High School and Drake University. She was inducted into the Sports Legends of Cleveland Public Schools Senate League in 2022 for her high school career at East Tech High School. And in 2025 Wanda was inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame, which is how I learned about her outstanding career. Just three months after Magic Johnson retired from basketball due to his HIV diagnosis, he made a triumphant return on 9th February, 1992 - at the NBA All-Star Game in Orlando, Florida. The sports world was divided—some players, like Michael Jordan, welcomed him back, while others, like Karl Malone, were hesitant, voicing concerns about physical contact on the court. But when Johnson stepped out, fans and fellow players alike cheered him on, and Johnson racked up 25 points, dished out nine assists, and lead the West to a dominant 153-113 victory over the East, becoming named Most Valuable Player. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discover how Johnson became the face of basketball's golden era; explain why misunderstandings and ignorance about HIV was so widespread; and uncover the career Johnson built beyond basketball... rWotD Episode 3198: 2023 Japan Series Welcome to random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Wednesday, 4 February 2026, is 2023 Japan Series. The 2023 Japan Series (日本シリーズ, Nippon Shiriizu) was the championship series of Nippon Professional Baseball's (NPB) 2023 season. The 74th edition of the Japan Series, it was a best-of-seven playoff between the winners of the Central League (CL) and Pacific League's (PL) postseason tournament, the Climax Series. The Hanshin Tigers and Orix Buffaloes each won their respective CL and PL titles in the regular season, which advanced both teams directly to the final stages of the Climax Series; each then earned Japan Series berths by winning their respective CL and PL Climax Series. The Tigers and the Buffaloes both play in Japan's Kansai region, which made it only the second time that two Kansai-based teams played each other in the Japan Series, the other being in 1964. Because of the teams' close proximity, the series was dubbed "The Great Kansai Derby" and the "Namba Line Series" by Japanese media. While Orix won the previous year's championship, the last title for the Tigers came 38 years prior in 1985, then the second-longest active championship drought in NPB. Starting on October 28, 2023, and ending on November 5, 2023, Hanshin won the series in seven games, thus ending their championship drought and the Curse of the Colonel, a superstition that was believed by some to be responsible for the team's struggles. Koji Chikamoto was named the series' Most Valuable Player and Kotaro Kurebayashi won the Fighting Spirit Award as Orix's best player in the series. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:27 UTC on Wednesday, 4 February 2026.For the full current version of the article, see 2023 Japan Series on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Brian.

Sal and BT dove headfirst into the heated American League MVP debate, pitting the Yankees' Aaron Judge against the Mariners' Cal Raleigh. Sal argued passionately for Raleigh, asserting he is the Most Valuable Player due to his historic 58 home runs as a catcher and his impact in leading the Mariners to a division title after a 24-year drought; Sal claimed the Yankees would still be a playoff team without Judge. BT countered by focusing on the superior overall numbers, citing Judge's overwhelming lead in rate stats like OPS ($1.100+ to Raleigh's .948) and superior WAR (9.2 fWAR to 8.8 fWAR), arguing that Judge is simply the Best Player, and that positional difficulty or team narrative shouldn't outweigh his statistical dominance. The debate intensified over the definition of "valuable" and whether voters prioritize all-around performance or an incredible, history-making single-season feat.

February 7, 2025 - Season 15, Episode 89 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right to discussing the Pittsburgh Steelers officially being set to play a 2025 regular season game in Dublin, Ireland as the home team. That news was made official Friday morning so we discuss the speculated week that might happen as well as their likely opponent as we sit here in early February. The annual NFL Honors even took place on Thursday night so Alex and I discuss the players and coaches from the Steelers that received votes. We talk about how we both thought DT Cameron Heyward should have finished higher in the Comeback Player of the Year voting. We also discuss Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen edging out Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson for the Most Valuable Player of the Year award. The 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class was announced Thursday night and obviously no former Steelers are included in it. We discuss the apparent change when it comes to the PFHOF selection process and how it likely impacts future cadencies of former Steelers WR Hines Ward and OLB James Harrison. We also discuss two Steelers players who will be eligible next year and if QB Ben Roethlisberger is still on course to be a first-ballot selection a few years from now. The immediate future of the Steelers when it comes to the quarterback position is an ongoing topic this week so Alex and I discuss the latest he said and she said when it comes to what beat writers and major media members are saying about QB Russell Wilson, QB Justin Fields, and even QB Matthew Stafford, who is still a member of the Los Angeles Rams. Will the Rams look to trade Stafford this offseason and should and could the Steelers be interested in dealing for him if he winds up on the market? With our SD crew back from the 2025 Senior Bowl in Alabama, Alex and I conduct a roundtable discussion with Ross McCorkle and Jonathan Heitritter. We discuss several players who took part in the annual Senior Bowl and cover several position groups as part of the discussion. We discuss Senior Bowl players who fit the Steelers and much more. Special thanks to Ross and Jonathan for coming on the show and please make sure that you are following all of them on Twitter/X at their linked to profiles. Later in this show, Alex and I give our thoughts on Super Bowl LIX as part of us previewing the big game on Sunday. We make our score predictions for the Super Bowl to round out the segment. This 133-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap as well. We also answer a few listener questions at the end of this episode. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
